USC was ranked number 1 in the Nation and had the longest winning streak at that point. This is arguably [one of] the biggest rivalry in College Football.
Explanation for people who don't watch (American) football (with the best of my ability): In order to stop the clock you need to either throw the ball and have it not caught by anyone, or get out of bounds. USC player has the ball then runs with it and gets tackled without getting out of bounds. The clock runs out and USC has no timeouts to stop the clock, so the game is over. Fans who have already climbed onto the field from their seats rush the field and the coach of Notre Dame walks out to the middle of the field to shake hands with the other coach, as is tradition when a football game is officially over. But as you can see in replay, the ball went out of bounds as he was hit. So it was incorrect to let the clock run down to 0:00 and they corrected it by adding a few seconds to the clock.
I am a little unclear on this rule but I believe that if the ball goes out of bounds like that in College, the clock stops and it won't continue until the referee puts the ball down on the grass so the players can make the next play instantly if they're ready. Referee puts the ball down and USC has one play left, the USC coach signals to the players to intentionally throw an uncatchable pass to stop the clock (spiking it) and then bring in the field goal team to tie the game and send it to overtime. The players instead try to win the game and risk letting the clock run out and lose if they don't get into the endzone.
EDIT: I'm not really correct at all in the paragraph above this edit. Read and upvote /u/CaribPhin's comment that is one of the replies to this comment.
Controversy- On the final play of the game you can see a player push the USC player with the ball into the endzone.
You're not supposed to push players who have the ball if they're on your team, it could have been a penalty[Citation Needed]. This was called the "bush push" as the player who did the pushing was Reggie Bush. I can say I've never seen that penalty called in a game, especially not to change the outcome of the game.edit: sorry about run on sentences and grammar
Notes-
-80,000+ in attendance at the game. Notre Dame was the home team.
-The color analyst to this game is now the Athletic Director at USC. (Pat Haden)
-This was Charlie Weiss' (Notre Dame Coach) first year and never came any closer to beat USC and was fired 4 years later.
-Reggie Bush indirectly destroyed USC's dynasty because his parents were accepting rent checks from an agent with the condition that Reggie signs with the agent when he enters the NFL. NCAA saw this as an opportunity to penalize USC and did so for years due to this one incident.
-Reggie Bush also won the Heisman that year. Heisman=College Football MVP
-Pete Carrol (USC coach) left USC after the sanctions were handed down and has since led Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl as head coach.
-Both Quarterbacks for each team sucked in the NFL
-Wide Receiver for Notre Dame (Jeff Samardzija) was recently part of blockbusterish trade in Major League Baseball between Oakland and Chicago
-Notre Dame wore green that day, a rare occasion. I believe they hadn't worn green since 1985, when they beat USC by 5 touchdowns.
-USC went on to lose in the National Championship game that year on one of the last plays of the game. If USC had won, it would have been 3 AP championships in a row. Something no team has ever done (I believe).
-If you want to see a little more context on how tense this game was, here is the time stamp for the final 5 minutes of the game. For mobile users it is 2:56:13.
-I've edited this comment based on feedback.
Life long Notre Dame fan here. Still hurts to this day...
Can someone please explain to me what is wrong with the push that Reggie Bush did? I thought players push runners all of the time.
"One judge says touchdown!" No dummy, he signaled stop the clock.
"They're saying to down it!" Why would this fool anyone? The clock is already stopped.
The ref was signaling to stop the clock. There wasn't confusion, just normal ND hysteria and delusion.
Good ol' Bush Push. One of the best games I've ever watched in a crowded bar.
As a current USC student, this makes me sad to see what a shit show we've turned into now.
Well the clock did run out... so it's hard to fault then entirely...
Plus if usc lost we would never have had that awesome rose bowl against texas...
Y u do dis?
Jesus the gardener he posted the whole game.
