I got the idea from you guys talking about it last week, sorry if this is a duplicate post. Please take it down if it is, sorry. But watching that game made me jealous for the amount of respect people had for us. How teams had to come through us to win the championship. Could you imagine being that respected again? Man that would feel awesome.

[Music] [Music] [Music] Notre Dame's Brandon 93 was the same as it is right now I think it stands for excellence over time it stood for the traditional power and college football notre dame was was the history of the sport lou holtz had this team rolling they had come close to winning the national championship a couple of additional time since 1988 fans expected this to be a terrific year I mean that was never dating back in the early 90s I mean we were coming off of you know the 88 national championship you expected to win it every day next number one Florida State versus number two Notre Dame on NBC Sports when summer is finally forgotten as daylight dwindles sooner each day look around the corner just beyond Main Street chances are there's a game in a back yard children in the midst of imagining some with a notion innocent but powerful you eagerly followed your team listening to that distant voice you couldn't sleep after a victory couldn't wait till the day when it might be your time and then that day arrived that moment that affirmation when you were told you were special and so you worked and you sacrificed pointing toward that day in the fall when all of America would be watching you watching your team the kind of daydream done in a backyard just around the corner from Main Street [Music] here are the questions confronting number one Florida State are these to be the Seminoles we'll had last run the full gauntlet of grueling competition and withering expectations is he to be Florida State's first Heisman winner is he to be finally on national champion but between these hopes and their fulfillment there is the myth the stadium in South Bend and history's team Notre Dame 11 national titles 7 Heisman trophies no other school has won as many championships no other school has had as many all-americans and in their home you also play against their past galloping shadows from 1924 echoes of legendary coaches in South Bend they become accustomed to teams chasing championships and now comes another inspired by a tradition without equal so here we are perfect seasons at stake a game in a perfect place a collision for history a school hoping to finally ascend to college football's summit a school hoping to add to its already abundant legend number 1 Florida State and number 2 Notre Dame the coming of a day dreamed of in backyards just around the corner from Main Street [Music] Notre Dame Stadium out about 7:30 this morning around that time the Florida State Seminoles were awakening in Michigan City Indiana peering out their hotel windows to check on their greatest pregame concern and in that department they seem to have caught a break it'll be unseasonally warm not much rain before the game nothing significant looks like they'll have every opportunity to exploit their acknowledged superiority in team speed while they were making the hour's drive to South Bend the Irish were attending mass at Sacred Heart Basilica and then striding through the campus from church to stadium looking to draw inspiration from forces both seen and through the sand inside Notre Dame Stadium and a check on the weather on November 13th the wind could be a factor that might be the only thing working against Florida State other than that the Seminoles couldn't ask for much more in this the battle between number one and number two presented by the United States Postal Service hi everybody I'm Bob Costas and ok we acknowledge it right up front some hype is inevitable in a situation like this but really understatement will do quite nicely thank you it doesn't have to be the game of the century or the game of the decade because certainly it is the most anticipated college football game of the year with the cast of characters the setting and the circumstances in place for a memorable game each team is nine and OH each is riding an overall 16 game winning streak you could say they're as close as one and two but just how wide is that gap this year in fairness Florida State would be an overwhelming favorite in this matchup if it were at Tallahassee or on a neutral field and even here even under the gaze of touchdown Jesus they're about a touchdown pick but still it is Notre Dame at home with all that implies that gives this game its dramatic context and its competitive possibilities because keep in mind over the years whether at Notre Dame or elsewhere Lou Holtz and his teams have thrived in the role of the underdog registering some memorable upsets [Applause] today Holtz's second national title and Notre Dame's 12 could be within reach for more let's go to the Irish sideline here's John Dockery doc hey Bob in the context of what you say what amazed me startled me this week was the relaxed state of Lou Holtz a normally very intense man as you know before the game this morning I asked him about his mood and the mood of the team I think that we're going around and visit him last night and talking to I mean I think they realized that if we play well we're going to win if we don't play well we don't have a chance and it's up to us to perform well and you can't perform well if you're afraid or if you're nervous about making a mistake this is the time just to go out there put on a show I think turnover is gonna be pretty kooky and I think this wind is certainly going to give us a greater challenge in our kicking game than previously the wind may be one challenge but also the challenge of keeping his defensive backfield healthy how is that practiced on Thursday night 3/4 of the starting defensive backfield stood on the sidelines but John Covington's eye infection is healed and Greg lanes ankle is ok most worrisome was Bobby Taylor's pulled groin muscle I talked to him a few moments ago in warm-ups he said it was ok he won't wear his sleeves but Bob I have to wonder if his leg will hold up under the onslaught of the most explosive offense in college football doc thanks a lot for the benefit of history and context here there have been 7 Heisman Trophy winners at Notre Dame beginning with Angelo Bertelli and continuing through Johnny Lou Jack Leon Hart John Latner Paul Hornung John Huard and most recently Tim Brown we mentioned this because Florida State has never had a Heisman winner until this year when their quarterback Charlie Ward is considered a virtual lock regardless of how he performs today now he sat out last week's win over Maryland to rest his aching ribs but he is ready to go and for more on that and the rest of the Seminole perspective let's go to our own Heisman winner Oh Jay Simpson juice well Bobby the good news for Florida State is watching Charlie Ward and talking to him he look great in warmups he said he feel great nice injury is very high up in his ribs it's really right on there his collarbone right about here and what they've done he can't wear a flak jacket they put a pad inside of his shoulder pad like a doughnut around the injury so he doesn't get hit directly on it the fill is in great shape the best shape I've ever seen Notre Dame feel innocent it's a testament that Notre Dame want to see the best team win here today the most significant thing that I witnessed in the warm-ups was a play of Scott Bentley the Phenom freshman kicker from Florida State he missed his last nine field goal attempts five to the right four knuckle balls to the left this game is figures to be a very close game so Bob that could be bad news for Florida State and of course historically juice we know all about missed field goals at the finish in big games for Florida State since 1987 Bobby Bowden's team is 73 and 9 never lower than fourth in a final polls second twice but never first at the finish in that stretch they played any number of games that could have been called the game of the year at the time when I talked to Bobby Bowden on Thursday in Tallahassee I asked him if this latest edition of the game for the ages felt any different well we felt like we've had one already with University of Miami and I if we win this one they'll be some more you know does this one feel different though does it feel different a little bit I mean you know at least we played Miami was in Tallahassee in and we knew we had them in our backyard and the big difference is now we go to somebody else's backyard and try to do the same thing not just any somebody else though yes it's South Bend no that's amazing right well it really does it does to me I think it means more difference for Mendizabal players my players are so young they don't know about all that tradition be honest with you you have to remember some of these boys were raised in orange groves some of these boys were raised on farms some of these boys are raised in the country they don't know about all that tradition but I did tell them about the tradition of Notre Dame I want them to know it they ought to know it I mean it's if you're a football player and you have a you want and you want football you need to know about Notre Dame at least 35 scholarship players so if any of you has any fantasies about running out of the bath stadium tunnel with your gold how much shine in the Sun you must be them right here no I did not take him to see Rudy and the only reason we hadn't been around where it was yet but you actually would have oh I'd love for them to see it I I it'd be too difficult for us to get a hundred boys and take up a picture show we've done that before however but I would love for them to see it if the game is close he was quoted he changed his mind on this but now he says I'll go for two for the victory what would you do you know back when I used to have the deals where they'd get guns and shoot each other because you said something bad about the wife Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton exactly I'm kind of like it's hard to back down from that win you know I don't know again I don't know if I can I don't know if I can go for one maybe but it might be the thing to do at us well the finger one dating 287 you're 73 and nine never lower than fourth in the polls second a couple of times but you know the story no national title you don't need a national title to prove you're a great coach but do you need it to complete your portfolio yeah oh yeah Wow if I were to die today or tomorrow or quit coaching my resume I'd have something missing there be something big missing on it it's a national championship you know you know and if can't care women if I do get it by sure you would naturally I'd like for Florida State University I like for the coaches at Florida State I like for the players at Florida State to have a national championship now there's no doubt about it it's missing on my resume what do you like the night before a game like this or in the moments on the sidelines before they kick off in a game like this are you feeling something noticeably different all you get very competitive you get very competitive you just get you don't care I mean I you know I like like I want I'll be concerned about this and concerned about this and that and and and just you're really just concerned are you ready and then you walk out on that field and you and and you start getting lined up more then all of a sudden that the computers start flowing and you're ready to strike anything his Wiggles he lose complete you lose complete fear of anything else you know and and I'd see it Lou Holtz's eyes on the other side it's just us I think all of us coaches kind of gear up for that and it's kind of like when you get out on that field thank y'all leave y'all gotta leave me alone now I'm busy you know it's all football bobby bowden on the subject of going for two back in 1987 against miami he did go for two late in the game after saying before the game that he play for the tie they didn't get the two-point conversion lost to the Hurricanes 2625 might have lost the national title in the process we're only minutes away from kickoff at Notre Dame Stadium and we'll come back the Knowles and the Irish getting ready and we'll return to South Bend in a minute [Music] the last time the Irish played in a number one versus number two matchup was in 1989 against Michigan rocket Ismail ran two kickoffs back four touchdowns to give the top-ranked Irish at 2419 win over the then number two Wolverines now the only time the Seminoles have played in a one versus two game was in 91 when Jerry Thomas is 34 yard field goal attempt sailed wide right as second ranked Miami upset number one Florida State 1716 in Tallahassee upcoming the 28th number one versus number two matchup in the last 50 years although only rarely has it happened so late in the regular season the scene has been set time for us to send it upstairs to the men we'll call the game Charlie Jones and Todd Christensen Charleston thank you Bob and where in the world would you rather be right now here in Notre Dame Stadium let's start with the visitors the number one team Florida State we start with a quarterback Charlie Ward there's no doubt about it the prohibitive lock for the Heisman Trophy Charlie Ward 16 touchdowns one interception as was mentioned two weeks ago he was injured sat out the Maryland game he is fine today ready to generate that fast break offense and then fast break offense at the other end has an outstanding core receiver 85 catches worth between kills McCrory and tamarick vanover Vanover is the man that can go the distance he can break the long one mccorvey is the one that comes up with a clutch third down catches covering these gentlemen will be Bobby Taylor John Dockery mention that he had a groin problem during the week he is going to have to be a hundred percent to cover the very high potent attack of the Florida State Seminoles now let's move to the attack of the Notre Dame Irish and it starts with that forward wall the front line a young man he's only 20 years of age weighs in at 299 his birthday's tomorrow his name is Aaron Taylor and we talked about the speed of Florida status personified on the other side the power of Notre Dame Aaron Taylor arguably the best college lineman since Dave Remington he is the one that opens the holes for the backs and helps to protect kevin mcdougal and the unsung hero for Notre Dame could well be the quarterback Kevin MacDougall here's a young man that said to Lou Holtz I'm the senior I am the man who will lead you to the national championship and up to this point is more it's been more than just idle talk he is the man has done I know he is going to have to have an effective passing game today for the Irish to defeat for the state let's go down to John Dockery these two teams are winded he teaches of each other Notre Dame now both teams are lingering in the tunnel their posture you see the Florida State front of me and he's trying to push his team out Lou Holtz's restraining his team cannot tell you the tension between these two is real and powerful and explosive and it looks like the moment passed and there was no explosion back to you Charlie and the seller crowd at Notre Dame Stadium as they greet the number one team in the country the Seminoles of Florida State and now the shine of the golden helmets as they come out of the tunnel underneath the goalpost they will they will break on his call the number two the country [Applause] he's had two weeks to prepare for this bargain [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] after these messages from your local station [Music] and welcome back to Notre Dame Stadium we are just around the corner from Main Street Florida State won the toss they have deferred to the second half and so Notre Dame will be receiving Florida State will be kicking off quick Johnson little intensity early on was interesting they're down in the tunnel they're a stereo one another photo state was ready to head out they came back trying to psych-out Notre Dame at their place I tell you what the flippity symbols [Music] they did today cold [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the truth [Applause] Oh [Applause] and so another day [Music] it's the quarterback that offensive line of Aaron Taylor Mike is that a pesky Tim Ronnie Ryan lay the grandson of Frank and Todd Norman and there is a look at the backfield beckon sellers Johnson dozen and Oscar McBride starting at title [Applause] [Applause] derreck Brooks defensively for Florida State brothers and macintosh Nance Alexander Derek brought to you Jeff saw Ken Alexander and tawdry Bowl so here twist of Abraham denim bush Richard calls in the secondary that in siren Abraham arguably the best pair in the name [Music] secondary [Applause] to fall back away sellers thirty-five derreck Brooks makes his presence felt look how deep he is he's at least six yards off the ball and that means the Notre Dame offensive line can't get to him look at the penetration that he has the neck injury needless to say is not bothering him at all because of the injury I simply cannot take a snap for granted this is a second game [Applause] [Music] [Applause] 20:40 screen setup well to the left side of your screen you're going to see Beckman just blitz comes in good jumper the offensive lineman and for tackling downfield this run to the safety big play for Notre Dame on third [Applause] first down into Warren estate 41 drive of the game nose guard that [Applause] it'll be second down 11 and Jim Nantz this is his first game back after having his knee scoped the senior he makes the time well don't forget that John Nance also last year at this time had a bump on his neck it turned out to be a tumor he had the going to be able to play again thought back as well he's got today over person came back from his to carries it play-action fake mr. cui his looked awesome and he pickup of seven yards on picked him up for the cinema crucial to the success of Notre Dame today is their ability to get the play-action pass here you can see the interior fake to the quarterback just a little bit of an out route thereby leg Goss and MacDougall puts him right on the money now they're able to come up just outside the those war [Applause] passes clock in a complaint it'll be fourth down now the Bulls catches on the team only has 19 they don't throw the ball much for that surveys won the race others wishes he had back that's a certain first down if he can hang on notre-dame optic here China to play the field position game and there's he's trying to be upbeat with him it's okay and Adrian jerilyn is the putter he just wants to pooch it down around the 10-yard line interesting point the Lou Holtz made to us he says it's very the week of his players but on game day nothing but positive you'll never see me criticized that was interesting right there [Applause] four and five at the 10-yard line 12:26 left together welcome back to another name stadium Florida State about offensively the Seminole that offensive line the one Laureano who is tired clay Scheiber Patrick McNeil and Marvin Pharaoh Charlie Ward will lead the offense John Jackson William Floyd Pryor Kevin Knox Lonnie Johnson don't forget kids mccorvey and tamarick vanover come in to contribute when they go to the three and four wide packages otherwise known as the fastbreak [Applause] here comes part of the offense of the Seminoles out they came out in the back [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the protection may swing [Music] this is Sean Jackson and Jackson is defensively for Notre Dame and we'll look at their base set of my gun frantic in Hamilton British naheen and now with Lane tailored Covington and Burris in the secondary now that's their base and because of the three and four wide receiver package we're going to see a lot of Magee and would net a couple of extra linebackers well to Jeremy's [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] nothing for Sean Jackson [Music] [Applause] and one thing that is overlooked with the Florida State Seminoles Charlie Ward in the fastbreak passing attack they do have an outstanding running attack Shawn jack to carry the freshman you'll see in the bargain Lloyd [Applause] which explains why I admitted the defensive coordinator I'm saying what we want to stop in this game is go four-man rush [Music] [Applause] two birds on third down and seven this is what war does so very well he comes back sown coverage he sees that everybody is covered it's like the Red Sea right in the middle take a look he doesn't debate at all he cuts up the middle not too many blue shirts and interestingly if you've noticed Charlie Ward earlier in the season he normally slides this time he takes the beating which would lead me to believe he's very confident in his rinse [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] handoff Jackson gym planning once again Flanagan in on the play what they're trying to do here is in Florida state of spreading people out and they're they believe that they can run the ball against the iris take a look at the inside handoff to Jackson gets a good bottle of fighting in action look at the double-team in the middle is what he comes on to make the play otherwise it had a first down check it down in check [Applause] he gets to play he shots it to the line of it [Music] [Applause] flag is down who comes by the official evil the flag came in a little bit late it was clear Raylan but Greg Lane hit him a little bit too soon [Applause] [Music] the referee the officiating crew from the ACC [Music] we have passed in a village on the defense that's a spot file an automatic first down judge for yourselves if just for yourselves of Lane gets there before the ball watch number 33 just a little hook route by Knox there he is clearly before the ball could call by the official and it will go as a nine yard penalty it guarantees the first down for the state now at their own 46 yard line they started this Drive [Music] [Applause] Vanover so many times charlie you get that situation where the guy is wide open Sean Jackson suey wishes he had that one back vandal but was wide open in the secondary totally full of Notre Dame as you mentioned Charlie backwards throw Ward is conscious of doing this watch for his feet art and watch her Jackson catches it clearly right there now looking out wide open van over as he tries to lead him big mistake just throw the pop fly let it quail and a go end over at new whatever it is you want to do but get it to number 80 totally fooled there's worse coming up to support the line that's frustrating in such a life [Music] [Applause] the completest asthma party recovery to the 45-yard like this is closed in irish territory to the first down as justin going makes the tackle it's really only the second ball to Charlie Ward is so downfield otherwise he had Luke passes out to to Jackson he's trying to find some openings here in the secondary of Notre Dame being the very careful people get the idea when they think of the fast break offense if the zabumba storm all over the a 70% completion percentage and that is outstanding which means if he puts a lot of short ball very controlled passing game and that was something that Rick Miller pointed out is that people don't realize that very accurate passer James are out for the measurement [Music] and it's the first thing Thursday we're in Bobby Bowden's office and he was explaining to about the evolution of Charlie Ward going from the quarterback under center to the fastbreak and as he was explaining it he was he was doing over tables and behind chairs to his left at the door that's a great insight to the back basketball and from designers [Music] [Applause] 64 poster Gallants [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and Jackson to the 40 to the 38 yard line or go for about seven at last break off its and we have been talking about last year the eight games prior to that look at the points per game difference when they opted to go to the fast break what this in effect does is it gives Charlie Ward a chance to see the field up to this point its first ready for the Notre Dame defense because he does not have to step back he doesn't have to take the five or seven steps that a quarterback Center [Applause] offense is exactly a year [Applause] [Music] first down inside the this is what great quarterbacks do that's what great runners do he senses Flanagan from the backside was actually nobody could see him watch right of your screen number 44 chalkboard sees America this machine gets get little dip once again he ought not to slide taking again once again showing not put the magnitude of this game but the second is a lot of confidence in the fact that his ribs will hold up and that is the makes it Charlie and this one [Music] [Applause] thus far has been to content to go to their zone cover just watch friar underneath the zone waits and waits finds the scene takes a big hit from coming to been able to hang on fires the one you recall if you remember the Miami game with the business with the pass from Charlie Ward over 60 yards he could run back-to-back first down [Applause] and [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Blitzen either decides he wants to come watch it's just an excellent blend adjustment on the part of knives he just hooks up the ball quickly spins out of the tackle touchdown Seminoles once again getting the bomb off quickly warm shot coming Seminoles are up seven seven and the touchdowns match his number 17 on the year trying to shake up the defense Notre Dame gets out of their zone coverage in with their inside backers berth search and go he may decide to let them but they had anticipated that with Knox OJ Simpson just told us if that was the route that they are going to run they guessed right and Charlie Ward is able to pick up Knox on the side he breaks the tackle or goes in for the score nothing busbar seems to bother Charlie Ward he's get to throw an incompletion on that drive Charlie Ward 5 of 5 for 43 yards 2 rushes for 34 yards turning 77 of the 89 yards of the drug now Scott check out the clip Johnson [Applause] [Music] 7:09 interesting point that you were talking about accounting for the yardage Charlie he averages eight yards of play and that includes incomplete passes that is an unbelievable statistic for Charlie Ward 15 Abraham the cornerback will hold that's because the wind keeps roaring the ball off of the team [Applause] the endzone touchdown to the 20-yard line step aside for a moment Florida State leads it 7 to another [Applause] here in the first quarter Notre Dame is go [Music] [Applause] as they started following the touchback [Applause] [Music] [Applause] one of the advantages of being shorter right here rate sellers just a little under 511 watches he ducks under the tacklers from Florida State looks like there's look at that right underneath will should be made there by Nance but he breaks into the secondary Abraham hangs on but sellers [Applause] first down Notre Dame's [Applause] [Music] [Applause] 46 yard line that'll be second down in short really is a new wrinkle this is normally this is normally the cross but option coming to the left but it's dead there's nobody behind if he's gone right there good job coming out of trapping on Alexander first comes our to make the tackle but not before he game seven to the number 15 no significance and here is he gave Tibetan he says to the [Music] [Applause] down leaves a facemask at the end of the play look like you have a Bushman I got a piece of the mask [Applause] little frustration for Bobby bout because the tackling has been poor on the part of Florida State DC right there the mask effective miserable Thomas to finish the story no significance at fifteen his dad dr. Walker was in the meeting he said done son that sparked stars number that's the easily affected [Music] [Applause] I'm John close in remember Li Becton second play of the USC game here at Notre Dame he went some 70 yards we asked you about it yesterday he said I'm not that fast [Music] he's had 400 yard games coming into this one and his undergarment game today he would tie the all-time Notre Dame record set by out [Applause] and for Karen [Applause] get a mismatch in the secondary [Applause] close to the first down marker we may be looking at another measurement dori Sawyer is the man who brought him down defend us but sprint Florida stayed out a little bit just a little out route once again nice throw right on the money good job of holding on to the ball and he gets his lates take it out from under it interesting the discussion was the cognoscenti there at notre-dame that if they threw the ball like Florida State visit whether they felt like their receivers were just as good but they didn't happen because they ran them all so effectively [Applause] he's been averaging 15 passes that they promote says we may go to 25 a game we asked Kevin mcdougal about adhesive off my dad always counted me down 3-2 to the way [Music] [Applause] [Music] first down [Music] [Applause] [Music] he was hands on his head says it all that was a play clearly that they had designed for the specific defense of Florida State had they had a three wide receiver off its and you're right that's when he wishes he had banned Notre Dame was throwing on first down which is a big surprise because when we did SC what some three weeks ago they had 19 straight times on first down that they ran the ball [Applause] second down in jail [Applause] is the receipt your wife [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] we talked about holes with two weeks to prepare can't do this take a look at the white shirts all the white shirts are gonna get up here there's gonna be a phalanx of blockers right here another name that's what teams speed a lot of times as you all will pursue that's exactly what happened in Florida stayed here look at the number of you shirts down field over to white shirts that they have together completely out man Doral easy 32 yard touchdown [Music] [Music] bobby bowden now tied seven-seven [Music] and Notre Dame will be kicking up to Florida State tomorrow Vanover is the deep return man now last year he averaged just there was 51 yards per return so naturally this year he's had only one kick to it [Applause] [Music] let's go down to hojae after that a story played by Notre Dame Mickey Andrews a defensive coordinator of Florida State really went after Brooks the all-american linebacker he was telling them lay your responsibility first then get after the ball Vickie was telling him don't get to ages don't over pursue Charlie and we're looking at it and he certainly did / / zoo job there's no doubt about he has to stay at home there's no way he's going to run that down for the backside if he stays at all with Charlie ward from the 32-yard line [Applause] New Hope's is talking about his keys to victory with regards to the offensive Florida State here are some of the key things hold war to ten men rushing yards and what that meant is that they had to sack him if he got a big run limit FSU 250 yards after the reception and of course hold them under 100 yards rushing down the first two points in the first series Charlie Rd has 34 yards rushing and receivers the coverage pass is complete and this is tomorrow Vanover with the reception and Brian Magee the Nickelback for Notre Dame makes the tackle Johnny Warren throws it in a crowd once again zone defense on the part of Notre Dame Van Ola finds his way behind the linebackers look at all the blue shirts a look at how he threaded needle with a throw by Ward and it's a first down at the 44 yard line [Applause] and done the freshman from Baton Rouge makes his first appearance in the barn [Applause] gotcha [Applause] he fired it and he threw it behind them the reason they brought him down his first ball Jackson keeps running that loop round and I'm sure that he's tired done in the open field is dynamic he's the one they want to get the ball out here confesses the tops of the linebackers look at how much room he had to run the floor it is able to lead it is he's safe Charlie's frustrated as a bad throw on the part of Charlie where he points himself yeah that's my fault chuckle engine going they don't talk a lot [Applause] you said you guys what he says [Applause] this will be a first down he goes to Matt fire downfield John Covington the senior at the temple but one thing that you see here and maybe I'm speaking out of turn here with regards to comparing him to Joe Montana but that's exactly what Montana doesn't makes him so good watch it oh he's good allowed there's no way he could throw there it is off the wrong foot he delivers the ball right on the money to fryer great play by war [Applause] Charlie goes down the sideline and he is first downs for the Seminoles just is a Nickelback not normally in there little bit of a hook gets in the ball like a little 360 boot cuts it to the outside one right there gets faked out fire getting extra yardage needed there the ball at the 27-yard line of Notre Dame the Irish now with six defensive back [Applause] [Music] good protection over the middle receiver casma card it'll be second down and down we mentioned earlier but the great yards per play percentage that Charlie Ward has averaged 7.4 yards per play that's the team Charlie Ward himself averages nearly eight yards per play now today it is approaching 11 yards per play for Charlie automatic because a passer just outside the 27-yard line [Applause] [Music] [Applause] this may be the only time this afternoon it will be quiet garage sleep so savor the moment interesting here in the second drive Charlie even though they were successful with the fast break they've gone back a little bit to some of the I formation [Applause] yards in the touchdown [Music] [Applause] [Music] that he would have an interception that he would reach shuts down all those that his dream come true and that throw here on the part of Charlie Ward he should have taken off and run he saw fryer open but he didn't see Burris playing center field who came over ball fortunately for him a little bit high and burns couldn't bring it down so this [Applause] [Music] for sick [Applause] [Music] this is a big sack for a lot of reasons not [Music] he's been set all year but it takes him out of field goal range because you would have had to figure with a little they would have attempted approximately [Applause] message Charlie to form yes I have confidence in my hearing [Applause] [Music] [Applause] right don't forget that OJ Simpson pointed out that during practice he missed his last nine plenty of distance on that one with the wind but as was mentioned by Charlie hurt so many times Sarah Florida State wide right [Applause] all sales clear into the stands don't forget this is a man that kicked ten field goals over sixty yards when he was in ice so he certainly has the leg take a look at his reaction here as he punches it just to the right he knows he has the distance come on come back come back come back come back now not gonna happen and although Dane takes over [Music] [Applause] comes back inside her style [Applause] sometimes showing their dominance once again at the line of scrimmage take a look at the white shirts look at the gap that Becton gets and watch the block at the top of your screen by lake Dawson look at the persistence of the wide receiver right there pushing the safety out of the way and navel infected to get the first down great job downfield blocking by the receivers for Notre Dame two minutes left to go first quarter tired itself [Applause] Rachele is the full-back he'll pick up close to five it'll be second and five john nance with the tackle interesting point even though Notre Dame does not have this in their arsenal this would be a good time for them maybe to go with the no huddle they certainly have Florida State's defense on its heels and reeling they're doing exactly what it is they do [Applause] Luol told us that as you look at the yards per carry of lead vector Mandy Kenda and resellers out is there Lucia they want these guys [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the secondary tackling for Florida State is the bad books is down [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and Brooks comes up limpid Brooks is there at the end of the play that his foot got tied underneath him this would be quite a blow the Florida State if he can't return and back to this gun he comes out here's the hill here's number 10 he gets flopped at one hand take a look at the left like he sellers and bechamel on top [Music] what's the angle watch take a look at the left let it get stuck sellers blocking of an objective at the end that quadricep is the ankle folds under knee and Randy's gender left side from the 39 yard line he's going to pick up a couple to the 37 it'll be second down and long Notre Dame has now rushed to this point for 99 yards now crook skinny is angle looked at hopefully for him if he's resilient and just pulled it back a lot of times but his cleats are stuck watch what happens he was stunned [Applause] [Music] Andy Kindler the volunteer here he's the freshman from East Lansing [Music] Notre Dame players saying that Florida State line up offside like we'll take that and get the down back [Music] clearly at this point Mickey Andrews defensive coordinator for the Florida State Seminoles has to reconsider some of his fronts they have some big gaps up front and they might want to consider going with a few more of their eight-man fronts but what Lou Holtz has done as we get the call we have all sides on the defense five-yard penalty what Lou Holtz has done much to the surprise of the Seminoles as he's come out with some three wide receivers and of course when you have three wives that forces her safety to go out and play one of the wide receivers that takes you away from the eight-man and that's one of the reasons why nobody was running the ball so effective the countdown into the first quarter no no they insist okay we'll let it run out into the first period we're tied at seven we'll be right back after these messages Notre Dame's Brandon 93 was the same as it is right now I think it stands for excellence over time it stood for the traditional power and college football her name was was the history of the sport Lou Holtz had this team rolling they had come close to winning the national championship a couple of additional time since 1988 fans expected this to be a terrific year I mean there was never dating back in the early 90s I mean we were coming off of you know the 88 national championship you expected to win in there welcome back to Notre Dame Stadium let's go down to OJ Simpson well the bad news is Derrick Brooks all-american linebackers slightly sprained his ankle they retake tit he wears three-quarter shoes he's sitting in the locker room to get his high top shoes for better support I asked him could he go he says I got to get my hat top shoes and I just have to see Jews Dockery what's the news over on a Notre Dame side Oh Jay let me tell you that delete Becton came off it looked like he had a hip pointer but it isn't that it doctor will year ago told me it was more of a bruised rib you see Becton back in the game he's gonna try it we'll see what happens Charlie Thank You doc the power of Notre Dame 12 rushes 99 yards [Music] Florida State is going to have to make some adjustments on defense and bull ways than one if Brooks can't go needless to say they got to go with another player but they've got to get up front they've got to shorten their gaps in the back they look at the white shirts they're in the cap there that's what no today this fine second of June for back raise Ella's and he may get a happy guy that's about all that he's going again Nance again on the play along with Kent Alexander the Alexander told us as we look now at doing Brooke she said we love the Hofstra crowd they they really pumped us up I thought about to say that's when you're a big star with somebody else ties your shoes for you put your non-american candidate with big tire shoes third down and two [Applause] Father's Day was shorter man and Corey Sawyer he was late coming in as Florida State only had 10 men defensively on the field and meanwhile late Dawson came down to lay a rolling block on him I don't see the drama in this at all if you're averaging eight yards of care and you've had 100 yards in the first quarter rushing what's the debate you're gonna go for it here though the change will come out for the measurement I think the crowd senses that - there's no big off so they're gonna go for it on fourth clearly if they don't get it they're going for it [Applause] [Music] Tigers the clever [Applause] [Music] [Applause] as MacDougall tries to [Applause] [Music] the Seminole say that they have held they have offense the spot I don't understand that call at all Lou Holtz is definitely gonna be second-guessed on this as we mentioned up to this point is Charlie pointed out 8.3 yards per rush you haven't won a quarterback sneak you've got guys in the bet you got an offensive lineman averages 295 got guys averaging five and a half yards of carry why would you try a quarterback sneak look at this he doesn't actually get the snap terribly well there and that enables Florida State to jump on top they did not give him that second motion they said that he stopped it on initial point he's gonna be short [Applause] it appears that he doesn't really get the snap well tickler typically catches it let me bottles it right there look at that he bobbles it and then he runs over the top great play there on the part of number 44 Florida State jump my excellent way and they didn't in that second second movement at the end that enables Florida State to get the ball Alonso Horner is the man who made the play on the interior Google that both waters first down [Applause] John Jackson [Music] moving into the wind offensively [Applause] [Music] - plenty and above nots the axillary City you can tell from the flag but the wind is actually doing it Thomas knight defensive end got his left hand I've got a piece of that and that I was told you brought a friend she know it isn't easy [Music] [Music] [Applause] subject and sister on behalf of the quarterback Flanagan is there to cover I mentioned number 77 hey-zeus Hernandez from Miami is there well when he was eight years old his mother held him between his knees from Cuba to Key West 18 hours on the high seas and his mom I dare you Sanabria free job has the cafeteria what got out she has it closed down today [Applause] [Applause] [Music] a place [Applause] [Music] [Applause] a brick minute ago their shoe defensive actually generate some pressure this time with only three and they forced Charlie 1 to come out of the pocket and even a man over comes up with the catch there at the end he would have been short of the first down now Shawn listens been hurt this year this is a good opportunity for know today to get some feel positions the return man is Michael Miller [Applause] just a yard on the return to the 40 20 yards on a couple of yards on the return will step the magic number is seven with Notre Dame football is brought to you by the United States Postal Service we deliver for you by Subaru what to drive by Wendy's Super Value menu and value-priced kids meal there's something for everyone and by cuttin incorporated for America's cotton producers cuttin the fabric of our lives the Leprechaun and 1303 time remaining first half number two no today the Irish have the ball first down at their own 40-yard line the after wonder if Derrick Brooks has heard a little more than he's letting on he's trying to flex and trying to get ready but hey if it doesn't go too good for the sidelines [Applause] [Music] just the coverage and he tried to put him against asylum had great coverage there they went for the distance we mentioned the great cover corners in the tradition of people like Terrell Buckley Deion Sanders Leroy Butler Bobby Butler Abraham great coverage there Miller never had a chance two of the second and ten at the 40-yard line [Applause] [Music] play-action fake and deep over the middle his passions to first down [Applause] we talked about abraham johnson with the deep in round hey ram gives him a little bit too much respect to these slides for the middle he thinks he has help he curls up underneath bazzill the middle backers work back far enough and abraham mass to make the tackle but not before he gets the first now [Music] [Applause] [Music] let's back inside the market at the 40-yard line Dean Robertson with the death one of the things about the offensive lines for the Irish everybody talks about how big and how strong they are that's not all they're bright to take a look at the grade point average of the offensive lineman's accumulative of about three point three five Tim ruddy Bella from perfect mark is outstanding and don't forget we get a chance his class load [Music] he just keeps going [Applause] [Music] [Applause] with the stuff again we give a lot of compliments to the offensive line of the Florida State are not making the tackles go play here back to get stop right here arm tackles is able to spin out of the arm tackle of King Alexander and get the first down at the Florida State 30-yard [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] near the 26 row person with the stop eventually Tim Reddy's core slow than the fact that he's just not cruising by take a look at some of these categories in some of the classes that ruddy has statistical quality methods robotics business principles for engineers mechanical engineering for skiing I tell you what it's hard enough just to say it let alone the fact that these guys go into the classes and look at that perfect 4.0 out of 4.0 the last two semesters and she runs it we have to watch it man [Applause] [Music] [Applause] gasps to attempt the point after [Music] [Applause] two celery stalks take a look at Salamis key and then coming off his ten and bumps the linebacker look in the hole that enables Becton to cut through that's just a huge hole he doesn't have to be those kind of gaps but he looks and we'll be back with a kickoff this is only the second time this year that Florida State has trailed in a ballgame they trailed North Carolina seven I think early in that ballgame they went on to win it 33 to 7 this afternoon number one against number two Florida State trails norther days the score is 14 to 7 and Kevin Pendergast will be kicking off very interesting last time when they kicked off they kept everybody bunched in the same spot which is difficult for the returners this time they go to a more standard parents and stretch out all ten there cool touchback we'll bring it out to the 20-yard line lubos talked yesterday about that he had to have his offensive lineman slide to the linebackers and come down not just attack them what you're going to see Tanner leave the first backer he's going to leave me from McBride to come down the lead block by Zellers kicks the man out just outstanding line play by Notre Dame and that slide blocking there enabling back to look at that hole and there's no secondary support once again lake Dawson great blocking downfield back to you practically walk in for the score Florida State allowing only two rushing touchdowns in the previous nine games they have allowed two today that's the defensive coach to the achievement this sliding too to make the adjustments John Jackson this is a Charlie Ward he slips and plows at the [Applause] Bobby Bowden is known for his gimmicks but this is just not a good time to do it it sends him message to your team hey we're down by 7 in the hostile place this is what we have to I don't like this play at all especially in your own territory and right there because he slips huge loss at the six yard line and it and check it down [Applause] [Music] the seminars will be [Applause] [Music] [Applause] some altercations at the end of the play Wynn was going to be a big concern to the passing attack of Charlie Ward that's exactly [Applause] his first interception in a hundred and fifty nine attempts here [Applause] get ball foul possessing [Applause] they are totally against Florida was beaten down by the interception he reloads he airs it out for the touchdown combination of a truly often get into the wind enables covington to make the interception the interception plus the penalty reaction no-no-no then all of a sudden yes yes yes okay now we'll go back the other direction plate is over chowder horn comes up hit twice by both [Applause] [Music] the 23-yard line following the intersection in the 15-yard penalty Devon Bush with the tackle Notre Dame on time 14-7 922 that is a time remaining in the first half again of why let's go Jason welcome situation with Derek wants to be what it should be switching to high topped with clicks he didn't like the forget with the cleats Arthur exactly right this is the biggest game of the year number one versus two game of the century worried about whether or not the cleats are just right [Music] it'll be third and eight years ago is my gorilla and it's gonna say in the meantime chocolate this is a pretty big defensive stand for [Music] pushed down [Applause] and if Bush comes over if he landed perfectly Bush would have been able to make the play the ball is still behind Miller comes back and his body is between Bush and the football which can make that play Paul Fela Fela is now the quarterback this is [Applause] interception by John Covington the boyars go this is atrocious tackling on the part of Florida State they get it stopped up my first look at number 10 that Derrick Brooks in on the play his first play night and he can't make the play - Russ for the third touchdown for the Irish look at that number Tim just can't get him Oh Jay Simpson only Florida State sideline bobby bowden normally doesn't do much talking to his players during the course of the game took time to go to Charlie Ward a star quarterback say relax charlie just play your game we could get back in this game the soccer players to kick up in this ball he went back to a soccer player Kevin get off of the shot your team in 1990 [Music] [Applause] yesterday there are certain sections of field that can be slippery this has sweet breath and clearly the field position advantage has been another Dame's here in the second quarter of dot doesn't slip 27 yards it could have been out to about the 37 they really needed him to stay up on his feet Florida State bow started their own 27 yard line first down now who would have guessed at this point China there have been 21 seven Notre Dame very few [Applause] let's see what the Seminoles can do [Music] [Applause] into the way she throws and the tumblers and it's almost picked off [Applause] azam is intercepted jazz McCorvey Henri's in the intended receiver able to read his eyes once he rolls left there's only one place he can go come back there he cuts to the corner there's berths he's able to cut right to the ball almost gets it his Florida State going against what they've done this year normally it is a short controlled passing game [Music] that's a very good point too especially when they're going into the wind they're better off the rocks six consecutive and completions for Charlie oil the ball around [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] we learned down at Notre Dame Stadium from the Goodyear blimp spirit of Akron this is the 74 74 can you realize it then second of year the Goodyear blimps have been covering America's top sporting events I know what you're going to say that I did the first one [Applause] 2012 and we have time called [Applause] conversion slow 38 with that [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the LHC blocks Brian young into him take a look in the middle on the left of your screen here comes young now watch he'll get in sixty six will block it right into Charlie Ward he doesn't love he's spinning out he assumes he's still in the pocket kicking into the wind pretty good Jeff Kent catches garlic come on by Michael Miller and then he falls on it a 32-yard cake but Notre Dame has excellent Florida City [Applause] just absolutely die this [Applause] go step aside will be in 1966 the top-ranked Irish took her number to Michigan State Colio Bryan's pass to Bob glad Joe was the only Notre Dame touchdown on the day they finished a disappointing 1010 tie you remember that one Notre Dame did have the ball on their own 30 with time to run a few plays because they are precision elected to fall on the ball take the tie and he took a lot of criticism for that decision the next week Notre Dame went on to beat SC 51 the mouthing BEC get on the pitch out and he is yet at the line of scrimmage no he's going to lose a yard from the 43 to the 44 it will be second down and 11 John Nance with the stop remember earlier in the game we talked about the keys to victory and how up here the Florida State had gotten off to such a great shot great start look at the rushing yards today in college football a sack goes against you rushing yards Ward only 1 yards after the reception you see and the total rushing yards for Florida State does today [Applause] what gossip any from [Applause] [Music] he is he doesn't stay there and pound on the grass or complain about it he bounces right up and he has had that many opportunities he's the leading receiver for the Irish with 19 catches clearly there he signed look up field he was running before he had and as Lake Johnson told us a couple of weeks ago he said at Notre Dame every pass is critical as is this is a drop [Applause] we won't make excuses 67 [Applause] [Music] picked off lucky to get battle back [Applause] for the interception [Applause] Charlie this is the flow but Notre Dame has been stopped really by Florida State you recall in the first drive of the game Zellers dropped the pass that certainly would have given them the first down since that time three straight touchdowns this is the first time legitimately Florida State has held interestingly enough coming into that series Notre Dame in rust Robin that's it and the of course had rushed all three touchdowns l will be kicking - so you want to second-guess hold side [Music] and fate and it goes into the end zone there's a great break but they saw you yeah [Music] [Music] today the scores and highlights from around the nation yes there are other games going on today and of course Bob Costas will be on hand to talk about the first half and also taking a closer look Charlie Ward that's all coming up potential update Joe this would be a time maybe Warren wants to as well as bobby bowden the offensive brain trust affords a two-star Sirota game there's five minutes left in the first half yet you're down by two touchdowns but you have the entire second half to go plenty of time to still establish the run Charlie warns last 8 pass attempts 5 [Music] [Applause] de Provence since the tackle at the hoodie then bucked out of hours across the bench of Notre Dame eighteen yards on the play he's down oh yeah boy that was awfully close to a Lincoln [Music] nuts come on maybe something like that happen guys talked about establishing the run and here it is kind of the outside here comes Floyd let's see at the end of the play bounces to the outside is he out of bounds when he gets pushed now no now he just wants you to continuing at the end of the play what happens there is that the sidelines inevitably are much slicker and look at this he gets up gets to choose from the Notre Dame players as well [Applause] right there a little tarp right there that's very slim but that's his right there hits the back of his head right there that's submit fair that is not that's not turf anymore I'm sure we've got a little bit of a headache fortunately he's up and all right thank goodness Justin go mean making the hip with Travis Davis the ball is spotted at the 38 yard line and a first down for Florida State for 54 that is the time remaining water state trailing in the ball game by a score of 21 to 7 they're down by 14 and Tainan Sean Jackson Jackson to the 49-yard line Gregg Blaine with the daiquiri that will be back-to-back first downs for for out-of-state on the ground once again underneath handoff good fake by charlie Lord of course because of the number of times they've been throwing early in the game you got your linebackers their first step is backwards that enables them to get into the first 11:30 John Jackson 8.2 yard rushing at 30 zone just cameras ask you he fires passes complete [Applause] person [Applause] and when we talked to him yesterday he talked about into the stadium [Music] Flanagan is the man who comes from the defensive line great hustle on the part of the defensive tackle number 44 he strips the ball nuts kicks it in bridge makes you a country in the secondary watch the hustle from the left of your screen by number 44 Flanagan that's the left hand that gets in there and strips the ball away first down at the 33 yard line that is the line of scrimmage so it will be second down Ken Alexander with attack Knox can't be too happy with yourself as his head down assistant coaches try to perk him up but he knows that boy has a good chance there good Drive first two plays a couple of first downs he had another first down give Flanagan credit he's the man hustle outstripping so down in [Music] he is wrapped up he's gonna lose a yard Alexander were there for the seminar [Music] see first that you recovered the fumble and he talked about [Music] he touches part of the tradition this dark in the tunnel you step out and into the sunlight and it opens and you're ready and all those people are cheering for [Applause] can Alexander had them in man coverage and every if you have man coverage on the back that means the screen pass is not going to work and a flag drop back of the 29-yard line here's the call I'm holding on the offense ten yards bunt foul I think the Florida State's gonna want to refuse that one get the ball back with about 240 left see what they can do 21:07 I certainly would Florida State by any stretch of the imagination get it fourth down maybe and jor-el will be kicking to Corey Sawyer [Applause] [Music] Durrell is kicking just above 20 miles an hour [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] that's a package it's all well and good to say get out of the way but he could have come over make that play in safety 46 yards on the kick tomorrow join us for interval action starting at 12:30 with NFL live Jim Lampley Mike Ditka OJ Simpson and will McDonough will be on hand they'll be taking a look at the frustration of Dan Marino and Randall Cunningham they're both out injured and to be on the sideline from the Dolphins and the egos meet a game most of you will see at 1:00 o'clock Eastern Time the Chiefs and the Raiders at for a regional action check your local listings for the game in your area but right now check out this score Notre Dame 21 Florida State seven number two is leading [Music] I'd love to go what is there [Music] and Charlie Ward the toy he finds this one over the metal to judge the cover and he just across the 30 is going to be shy of the first down bounce back their feet escaped he was funny he actually bounced back to avoid the tackle if he stays where is he has the first down watch the middle of the field but Bobby comes underneath nice moves there bounces back there's a result McGee is able to tackle before he get the first the first began [Music] distracted media of the [Music] he may not take up the first down he needed a yard Greg Lane woman now and that's significant too because of getting the first down what they're hoping to do is to stop the clock and regroup now they're going to have to get the first down with another run probably before the clock is stopped so Florida State will stop the clock 125 that is the time remaining in the first half with the score Notre Dame 21 in Florida state 7 an opportunity to welcome more than 1 million US service personnel in more than 130 countries around the world that are watching this game through Armed Forces radio and television service Bobby Bowden mentioned the fact that Florida State would not be intimidated by the tradition because of the fact that the ghosts of all these great players past these guys were too young but he understood it to me Notre Dame invented traditional American college football the anticipation been the toughest I've ever been through I've just wanted to throw everything aside and get to the game of the year and I thought Charlie interesting when we talked him is very candid about the fact that went with the Maryland game last week he said maybe I shouldn't even have made the fight that was truly look at that's that game to this now to put tradition in perspective Florida State's first game was played in 1947 that same year Championship and their second Heisman Trophy [Music] then again I find it interesting the quote that I heard throughout the week by kids McCorvey what he said yes I'm aware of their tradition I know who ROC mutiny is it everybody busted up laughing why I tell you what at 21 to 7 at this one I bet somebody's explained to him that it's Knute Rockne partner [Music] 1:25 time remaining first half very impressive they're the last six years he's never been lower than forth from the polls interesting the Bob Costas was talking with him earlier despite all facies daddy 17 got that national title third down and short and it should be there let's see where they mark it they're going to spot it all mostly the 32 yard line and so that will be the first down for William Floyd [Applause] and of course in college football the clock stopped at the first down change or cell all this places on the hash mark and we're ready to go side passes completed [Music] he did not get outside so Charlie Ward has to take a timeout Bobby Taylor had the coverage talking about the short passing game Notre Dame is content to let them do this let the people run underneath make the six and seven yard catches and come up and make the hits Vanover open they're in the seven yard area breaks the tackle but that's just taking time off the clock Bobby Taylor content just to rest them down keep him in bounds and keep the clock running and Charlie with the wind in their face I would guess that Florida State probably has to get to at least the 25 to be in field goal range that's what the way the wind is blowing I'm not sure the 25 with me goes in there ensure to stay what is at halftime the Prudential update Johanna stone will bring up to date scores and highlights from around the nation you'll find out what coach Bobby Bowden son is doing in his ballgame and Bob Costas will be on hand back here at Notre Dame Stadium to talk about the first half and do take a closer look at Charlie Walker that's all coming up and that time there is a closer look at the freshman from Aurora Colorado Scott fiddler a lot of pressure on him after turning down Notre Dame and going to Florida State he anticipated coming in here here at Sabu's but nice yeah he said you know what I told my story it was the only kind of recruiting he said I talked a lot of other freshmen around the country and we all have similar stories well when you lose somebody you can't be happy about it the cover of Sports Illustrated with the young man Scot Bentley and of course you know the story Bobby Bobby said you come in you are [Applause] before this now and I believe it was Brian Young so that should cost Notre Dame five yards Notre Dame is hell Florida State - 39 39 total yards here in the second quarter well the wind truly has been a factor endless to say wards so effective with the wind against the wind nowhere near as effective the two head coaches a study in contrast no prior no contact [Applause] and lose smiling for good reason he say wait a minute there has to be the ball wasn't snapped the offensive line would jump back Eva Valeri collided with the other can't be nothing he's right across jumps across but he doesn't make any contact and of course the ball is snaps on it had to do something nothing [Applause] intercepted on the down by Jeff Burroughs mccorvey couldn't hold on to it and neither good jet borough tell me warrant you can sense a little frustration normally very Placid and calm puts the ball right on the money you're very catchable little behind of a core we can't quite come up with it and burst it's surprised and that impeded right there of the nine that's not a drop he did they anticipate that [Applause] a touchdown [Music] defensively down and what the Grigori [Applause] Bobby Taylor had the coverage [Music] second level [Applause] that brawl personifies the [Applause] with the short pass a game that they have he fills a fly pattern that shows right there that they're frustrated and what notre dame shows here is they do not think that Sean les is going to kick returned man and now the Irish take a timeout second set is the time remaining here in the second quarter now he's explaining tuberous he says why didn't you get back there as a wait a minute just was to put the property but return team thought the field go just not my fault touchdown returns in the Holtz era that's the last eight years including this year eleven kickoff nine months 11 interceptions one fumble a total of 32 upon it a total of three what you volts is thinking about right here and everybody knows that Bobby Bowden is a gimmick guy we've seen this early in the game already with with the backward pass and the double pass you're absolutely right I don't think he believes that he's going to punt and so rather than he's gonna put his feet his defense is still on the field and what that defense is called is called safe you know what Bobby Bowden is doing area Tolman and making my notes he said this is what I do I'm making my notes right at the Atlanta but what I'm going to say the players that have done he keeps writing this is a lot to say [Music] [Applause] another win with nobody back as we mentioned it'll be down at about the 16 yard line so that would tell you right there Dame is certainly content with their 14-point lead yards on the deck another day [Applause] here at the end of the first half the Paul Fela is the one who's asked to come up and do that good interesting that is it for seemingly go with pong fail on the goal-line offense and now they go with an heir figure in short yardage they're just going to run it run it out he may just step back and down the ball I say interesting because he's he's called he's been on the bench [Music] and he makes the moon it comes to the outside that he could well pick up the first half 23 seconds still left and a couple more moves like that and Notre Dame's infinite array in their favor and Charlie Ward looks off well I actually think lou holtz would have preferred that he stayed for the whole system making any at all he's got like the way things have got in the first half [Applause] [Music] - Randy kinder John Mane's wraps him up and that should go one of the state university averaging fine 62 yards [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and Notre Dame's Brandon 93 was the same as it is right now I think it stands for excellence over time it's stood for the traditional power in college football notre dame was was the history of the sport lou holtz had this team rolling they had come close to winning the national championship a couple of additional time since 1988 fans expected this to be a terrific year I mean it was never dating back in the early 90s I mean we were coming off of you know the 88 national championship you expected to win and everything welcome back to Florida State Notre Dame let's go down to OJ Simpson I'm here with coach Bobby Bowden Bobby unusual situation down by 14 what did you say to your team at halftime and what must you do to get back in this game I think Notre Dame did exactly what they said it was gonna do the toughest and they say we want this physical is we got to be we won't bid if we don't get more physically I've told them hey we've been in this before we were down 21 last year in the fourth quarter I mean but down 14 and the fourth quarter came back in one now we gotta have to come back and it needs to start with its first drive we need to do something with this kickoff return and get some momentum back they've had momentum ever since our first touchdown then they got momentum and yeah I think to follow fall well good luck back up to Charlie Jones now very quickly let's go down to John dr. well thank you Charlie um Bobby Bowden was just saying that the first half was very physical and that's where really Notre Dame took control of the game well I tell you it they're a great football team this thing's a long ways to go over we got play 60 minutes coach was a plan to throw more than people expected well we felt we had to mix it up they're awfully awfully good why did you defense play so well and why were you able to contain them well we're pretty damn good action defense football team but we'll talk about after we play it for 60 minutes last one the wins second half how does it affect your game plan yeah we can't change and we have to play one way with the win one way against it Thank You coach good luck charlie and he did of course talk about the defense and in the first half Florida State at 89 yards in their first drive [Applause] defense 262 yards 62 yards it's the first drive and in all of the - everything that everybody talked about power versus speed and Charlie Ward and all the great players and nobody talked about Notre Dame's defense and they have dominated the bargain let's also mention of those 62 yards are in six drives so we've done an outstanding job they've contained Charlie Ward Rick Miller has made all the right substitutions in those Nickelback's for Notre Dame they're playing exceptional right now let's take a look at the halftime statistics brought to you by the US Postal Service well if Fitness stands out of course is the rushing yards and those two big turnovers by Florida State those led to scores composition insignificant and once again focus it has plenty of time to establish the run if they care - but maybe they feel a sense of expediency and urgency starting the second half a special award given at halftime here at Notre Dame Stadium and the spirit of Notre Dame award it is awarded to Aaron Taylor we mentioned this young man he will be 21 years of age tomorrow he comes from an outstanding family this is his mother Marti Taylor she is there she accepts the award she times special people of the world we had a chance to meet her now what she did with this young man when when he had a bad forget about the eighth grade she threw him out and he came back said do you live under my house you live under my rules and he does and he says my mother is my idol my best friend she is my role model I what I am what I am today because of my mother because she's the only person I think on the planet that Aaron Taylor fears [Laughter] she recently has adopted to us she works with youngsters in San Francisco and dropped it has adopted twin boys they were three and a half years old and Aaron said when I heard about it I just said that's my mother she has the biggest heart in the world I tell you what she has a lot to be proud of we've already documented how well the young man has done athletically will the three point to grade average set to graduate on time that's it that's tremendous [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] to the far side the twinning 25 or 26 yard line now the Seminoles offense going against the men here in the third as they did in the second and in the first quarter with the way you could see the difference the numbers for Charlie Ward very good in the first quarter with the weight of the second quarter needless to say that quite so effective it's blowing you can see any kind of flipping around [Applause] it's pretty solid [Applause] he's going to pick up about three yards on the play Jim Flanagan makes the tackle that by the way the first time that Sean Jackson has run that particular play this year because in the past when the Seminoles have run it down the freshman has been in the best ball interesting that you'd even mentioned that that's the name that we have called hardly at all today as Warrick Dunn somebody who coming into this game out over 80 yards per carry he has been a definite to the South Jackson 5 Russia's 50 [Applause] behind the 32 yard line being to the couple that would be third down and five what we're seeing here I believe is what Bobby Bowden ship the out toughness in the first half we have to get tough with them you get tough with your running attack well that's true but again you know you wonder if the is the fun Florida State they're gonna be able to do that first to dissuade all see symptoms chili you getting rid of the right for the standard 35 yard line [Applause] we'll be fourth down [Applause] to unity cuts a bit short before we've got to be able to get beyond the sticks so showing less will be kicking into the wind Michael Miller who's the return man for Notre Dame [Applause] [Music] 31 yards on they get into the land at half for the first time in the second half [Music] who's the decision to take the wind was a good witch and that was surprised too I thought the Notre Dame would have wanted the wind for the fourth quarter but now up 21 to 7 they feel like they can maybe put into the death grip on Florida State if they can get a drive going here in scoring go up 2087 the fighting errors have not [Music] reigns Ellen's the fallback is the marker and Derrick Alexander makes the tackle for the seminar everyone wants to do here is take some time off the clock don't look for notre dame to be in a big hurry to come out of the huddle and look for them to run the ball looking for the play-action pass as much as they did in the first half now that they have the two touchdown lead [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] corner cuts to the outside of the 50 [Applause] mm suppose did the team speed of forest a was supposed to negate this but there's no run support and that's the reason why great blocking on the part of the wide receivers for Notre Dame in this case Clint Johnson who takes are completely out of the play 16 carries night straight time [Music] maybe to that chef Becton dropped by Nance let's go down to OJ Simpson all-american linebacker Derrick Brooks came out he was limping visibly I asked him how was it going he said it feels a lot worse and you notice he's not in the game big loss for Florida State this would be a little bit chilly the thing starts to regardless of the shoe [Applause] a gain of six it will be third down and short tawdry Ball and Eric Smith make the tackle as we'll take a look at the blocking that offensive line of Notre Dame 35 pound advantage for a man and they certainly use it it's just not the size though their techniques are you're looking off to the drive down field once again slides the linebacker making the play is infected now 18-karat as a fifth string he's done that [Music] to be close to the first down back to the yam of our carrier Devin Bush makes the stop for Florida State again the wind is a factor and I say this is the reason I say it Charlie is another 36 yard line you say to yourself we're not sure but because of the fact that Florida State has been so ineffective going into the wind I don't imagine is going to be a real difficult decision here the front of Lou Holtz to go fort and I almost guarantee there won't be a quarterback speak but we saw that attempt in the first half it was unsuccessful so the change will come out [Music] you can go back to a club of lofts when he said earlier in the week [Music] [Applause] I think the reason is is because it's because of the fact that they don't have a lot of high-profile players I address the point to someone on a radio show I said give me a favor quick name five players in the Notre Dame team because last year they had some high profile people like medicine [Music] first down to throw the first pass of this drive it was intended for Derrick Mayes it'll be second down in ten the ball at the 36 yard line of Florida State mcdougal about happy with himself 6 for 12 for 64 yards you say oh that's not that big a deal for the catches and the planes have been big plays when they throw the ball Center the loop all stressed stressed is the fact [Music] sex tawdry buckland john nance with the style and it was interesting the one you said that looked over his shoulder to his dad his dad third down and four the ball at the 30-yard line during five of the six words excuse me five of the seven plays and we'll have a timeout Carl by Florida State they were a man with the ball they leave by the 14 back at home Notre Dame football is brought to you by the United States Postal Service we deliver for you by Hewlett Packard Deskjet and LaserJet printers by Geo inviting you to get to know the newest geo geo prism only at your Chevrolet GL dealers and by your Allstate agent for home auto life and business insurance you're in good hands with Allstate Oh today here on the Florida State sideline a little argument here evidently Florida call for nipple defense with Derrick Brooks out of the game is his responsibility to inform his backup batteries oh he didn't do it Todd was not on the field consequently they had to call a timeout back to you Charlie [Music] the catch of late dolphin tuck catch him to come out on his knees catch up a ball Mac night was there for the Seminoles he's the first guy will tell you that he could have caught it comes down on the knees the balls right there he gets his hands underneath it but it ricochets as you see off his shoulder pad can't come up with it so it is fourth down and a field goal attempt by Kevin Pendergast 47-yard field goal attempt [Applause] is as longest [Applause] 19:41 time remaining we're in the third quarter Notre Dame will be kicking off to Florida State the Irish up 24-7 number 80 [Applause] Ximena [Music] [Applause] you step out on the edge of the endzone down the touchback [Applause] you've seen some great shots today and here is one of them looking down at Notre Dame Stadium what an awesome sight the spirit based in Goodyear corporate headquarters in Akron Ohio is 1,000 feet over the stadium and traveling at a brisk nine miles per hour so tell me again what game were you doing at that first point is number one and number two from their own so I live in Pennsylvania we Boyd and Shawn Jackson or the running backs along with [Music] [Applause] George as a man Maccabi across the 35 you'll be out of bounds around the 37 yard line you pick up 17 in the first down the first flash of offense for the Seminoles just the first period it's Direction play house Notre Dame going look at that yeah even got a piece of it bad at the ball and McCrory is able to make the catch coming down field young frustration he thought he batted Alabama McCrory good concentration this direction fooled the linebackers of Notre Dame every section for 40 and he dives across the 40 the 40 given three it'll be second down and seven one of the questions has always been there regarding Florida State because of the number of times in big games they have a battle to come to is the question of heart the team have the heart to come through and right at this point of nine minutes attest to the heart of Florida State is right now [Applause] this'll be a first down near the 50-yard line as McCleary calls it in Jeff Burroughs and Bieber since were there for the fighting out drive these are the kind of throws that they had underneath the covers right there settles down an excellent catch my scans catch spins tucked receiver the middle that's where your any running the 49-yard [Applause] and the mr. William Floyd and Floyd matches his number as he goes to the 44 yard line Ryan McGee and Justin green stopping at that point look after the field goal I figure out the appeal the lunar Dame got a little slide here you only have the wind with them at 17 point payback on its heels a little bit Stephen to take advantage twenty four seven seven seven [Music] [Applause] and Jackson Josh keeps going he's got the first downs there any reason a couple extra yards pass in the park Charlie Warren right here he leads Jackson out into the flat as opposed to Freud behind him so he catches it at full stride now he gets up field that watched every knee comes it about oh my gosh I ran at the okay I'm gonna pull you then so you get some ideas okay [Applause] the 32-yard line [Applause] defensa just [Applause] completes the pass he goes to showing Jackson and there's nothing there but Brian Young was chasing down Charlie Ward everywhere that he went there was Brian Young all that easy 6-3 277 Charlie Ward does a good job of avoiding a nice play fake they're here right young right in his face but here at the end of the fight he makes something happen if Jackson just turns around there goes he might do something but instead he wakes one too many moves and falls on his butt right here he just turns and goes instead to the grass [Applause] [Applause] and he goes sliding just shy you see where they make them are suggesting as the size judge came in and he actually marched the ball wasters see any college Werner's is where you're actually down so it's bonded into 24 actually down as opposed to where he begins his slide furnace he down he starts his slide right right here he's down right there should be at about the 23 yard line and sentence at the toilet pool [Music] this is a turn back cast to sorry he wanted he was looking for a bit of an opening to cut back hey man when it's number one against number 2p you gotta do some fun things here is John Jackson why how many bosses is that he's thrown today is he system past comes back to Charlie Warren comes up slips and falls involved two passes in one factory charlie [Applause] it's just as well that he went through his hands because even if he catches it he gets tackled for the loss tried to set up the screen Notre Dame wasn't fool and Warrick Dunn now comes into the line if we haven't seen that much of this fresh room but he is that one of the offensive chef [Applause] to the outside since attacker comes back [Applause] [Music] he wanted to be redshirted we said why is it I've got the body of a high school player I need a body of a college boy yeah but after watching that run you gotta ask yourself the question why hasn't he been in before look at this five four nine hundred seventy pounds little stop start breaks a tackle look at the quickness upfield clearly he has some look at it whooping we're headed with the top of people for B at five nine one seven he is strong [Applause] [Music] [Applause] this is for doctor [Applause] inside here he's down again - boy and he's got touchdown [Applause] the bar sooner he goes out of the tribe just put some bears to speed [Applause] why is one just now getting the ball and for Florida's day that is in the first goal since the 7 minute mark of the first quarter and we have 445 left in the third and the extra point is good [Music] and John at 4:45 left the third the margin has been cut to 10 Notre Dame legend 24 out of 14 points it's simply what they wanted they went down on the linebacker this is a mismatch in the open field disk cuts to the outside it shows the speed and now we have a because water state now only down by ten [Music] 4:45 left to go we're in the third quarter Lorna State trailing now by Dan Lonnie Johnson well ball evolvers got Billy because of the wind going to the bar is raise eller now let's go back to the touchdown the speed that we're talking about just to the right of your screen in the play beat when the fight begins you're going to see Justin go he come to Charlie Ward then he's going to have to come out to dime take a look at regular speed the quickness and the move right there at the end by done there's fifty four now he comes out in the fake [Applause] just shy of the 25-yard line Notre Dame and first down [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the first guy to hit him his number ten books here we've been talking about the fact that this guy had spoke and he doesn't come he's been favoring the angle what does he do biggest play of the game thus far defensively but the goal of Brooks he gets passed he's a lot of charges mcdougal and here comes over some from the side Notre Dame very fortunate there the mcdougal didn't fumble you can see him limp on that like it's can and the finally just said forget [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] shoot down play now for the iris [Applause] [Music] my Camaro the antenna [Applause] and clearly even with the wind the wind may not have shifted as yet but the momentum clearly has now Adrienne it used to be robbed Leonard he was hurt in the fifth game he didn't fight in the big game somebody jumped on this one direction Brian foraging today the california game [Music] blackness like last time oh sorry needs to make the ketchup [Applause] [Music] James calls the absolutely clipped absolutely clipped this is going to go back big big break for Notre Dame flag was dropped right at the 30 blood Bobby Taylor is the sprinter for Notre Dame on the left he comes in against hammering the back [Music] after change of possession Telefonica spoiler file first round so not only then is not only then is it a 55 yard punt take a look with a ten yard advantage right here right here at the bottom of your screen [Music] don't go away [Music] 1968 was the last time the Irish played a one versus two matchup here at South Bend Leroy Keyes ran for two touchdowns and through for another on the halfback option as number one Purdue beat number two Notre Dame 37 Florida State trail [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] picture-perfect tackle [Applause] Joe they weren't clearly this was a novel that somebody must have missed it coming up right there Forrest Connelly doesn't get to his man inside inside rush by Hamilton his one that makes the plan [Applause] dun doesn't have any chance loss of 4 second and 14 [Applause] 62 yards big change in Feliz [Applause] [Music] touches the cherrywood flipsie slide [Applause] this is when he's dangerous when he rolls out and that enables some receivers to get free the watch they hit that Lane foots on it throws a little bit behind and Charlie won't even acknowledge the fact that it was my fault to give Lane credit he comes up and puts the hit on on the touchdown drive Ward was six of seven for 50 yards he carried twice 4:15 [Music] [Applause] [Music] state takes the second time out of the second half the noise is a factor remember we told a we mentioned earlier they were this season flashing the signs in with Bob's arms and signals and Bobby baton Tony said while we figured everybody's looked at it they picked a lot of it up so they're going to do it all by shouting you'll pass it on word-of-mouth and with the crowd here perhaps it becomes a problem now I think the problem was that they didn't have a third in 14 play let's now put this up easy man let's go down to John dr. that's easy for us to say yeah Charlie Todd is right on the pulse of this game because defensive line coach Mike turbo back said the exact same thing that they have to watch out for number 28 Warrick Dunn he's a man that can make things happen he was talking to his defensive lineman Brian Jim Flanagan Brian Allen's in the company saying look you got a spy him you got a shadow him when he gets the ball we've got to contain Warrick Dunn so Todd you're on the button back to you guys in Tallahassee another see how to eat I said why this movie watch everybody else is a Viki Mouse watch I want to be different now the seminoles did Mike Turco back in company a favor by the first half he has a couple of carries and 40 yards rushing one reception for six yards that quick burst and the touchdown 2:15 time remaining third quarter Notre Dame 24 [Applause] and the fastbreak standing [Applause] six in the secondary [Music] the screen shot he needs we attend about nine yards [Applause] captain at the 25 [Applause] defense knowing in this case 1314 sugar guilt the short play the part of Bobby Bowden the offensive people there for Florida State because at least in this case it picked up nine yards and field position can listen for down at five number six is Michael Miller the punt return man for Notre Dame and a good the wind Wow fair jets taken at the 34 yard line [Applause] into the wind now what a fair kitchen that situation where you know you've got the wind going you you got to catch the ball and run give Lissa Lana credit that's tough kick into the teeth of a 20 mile an hour wind to get that kind of distance [Applause] vents first down [Applause] 24 seconds left to have the wind [Applause] he slips down he tried to make his cut to the outside they were working on leave ected on the side I remember he had his bill in the first half he put the four amendments him not too long ago well give credit to Mickey Andrews and the staff of Florida State what they did in the second half to make some changes in terms of attack [Music] some of the problems the last two series second down [Applause] [Music] with back in Lane and given the Google [Applause] Laurie Sawyer finally and it's close to the first down you're absolutely right Beck to not only a hundred yard rusher but this is this is a definite pass run option you can see mcdougal doesn't look too far downfield there's Becton out in front and puts the block down in the google gets there within three yards of the sticks [Applause] [Music] practice [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] for some teams [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Jordan's going to be fourth down four yards to go [Music] six seconds and counting [Music] the linebackers to the left they just attack this shooting right for the gaps they shoot in the holes and as a result of that there's too many bodies they're right in the middle making the stick too many fight shirts you take chances like that you can be burned in the passing game but at this point down by 10 points Florida State is at not as effective thanks occurrences Computers of the paths of the [Applause] the third quarter he can't believe it look at Lou Holtz you've got to be kidding [Music] go to yard line but what wonderful remember what I said about not saying anything negative I take that back [Music] notre dame's brandon 93 was the same as it is right now I think it stands for excellence over time it's stood for the traditional power and college football notre dame was was the history of the sport lou holtz had this team rolling they had come close to winning the national championship a couple of additional time since 1988 fans expected this to be a terrific year I mean it was never dating back in the early 90s I mean we were coming off of you know the 88 national championship you expected to win and everything as we come back a big mistake by Notre Dame followed by a big gap of course that's the commercial break after the third quarter and I tell you what it would be interesting I don't know if Lou Holtz has the guts to do it but this would be a fascinating time for a fake punt Jeff Burroughs is the up man [Music] [Applause] here's what's happened in case you just warned them just join us Lord to Knox 12 yard touchdown pass Florida State went up early Notre Dame came back Derrell 32 yard touchdown run that tied a lead back did 26 yards on the ground Notre Dame on top Jeff Burroughs 6 yards on the ground Notre Dame 21 7 Kevin Pendergast career lon 47 yard field goal 24-7 in Warren - the freshmen' done six yards of the touchdown pass Florida State as we start to force [Applause] [Music] compared to McCarthy and McCarthy he's going to pick up a first down [Applause] before me on the slammer I mean way underneath he got bumped underneath by the linebackers his good thing Ward's on because he just missed getting sacked this great athletic play zone to his left mcore he makes the catch he gets run down fibre search but not before he gets within about a 1st and lock him down that before the edge so it is check it down and [Applause] [Music] in the back and this again is the cosmic RV he has really been the go-to guy for Charlie and we mentioned that from the very top look at the great hands that he has here the linebacker is going to get it what you barely stand and catch the ball and just as he's hit look at that he still hangs on to the ball even though burst hits him right in the middle the back that's great hands great constant [Applause] first floor [Applause] [Music] tez McCarver via first down Jeff burst and Brian McGee were chasing him rolling right you're going to see underneath he's just going to run an out route McGee can't can't cover him from the inside he's already given up three yards puts it right on the money in the party with the first down [Applause] so he shredded the navel into first down at the 33 [Music] [Applause] [Music] near the [Music] a couple of yards short of the first down by and McGee and Bobby Taylor make the doctor and what Sean Jackson did that was smart right there is that instead of trying to make moves and slip on the grass he just lowered his shoulder broke a tackle got a couple extra yards and he wouldn't have had if you try to do can jive check it down then comes in [Applause] I almost intercepted mccorvey the intended receiver now he's got to be frustrated because this is at least a third or maybe even the fourth time he's had a chance at an interception ball is really crystaled in there comes off the hands now watch verse is gonna have plenty time to come up and see it look the ball comes off his hands tip right there oh oh oh just off the tack of five gloves barehanded he catches Tomasz night [Applause] [Music] [Applause] alone as McCurdy's para the ditch 15 yard line Jeff burns makes a tackle first down 700 what happens here is the crossing routes are going to come underneath and as a result of that McCorvey phones the dead pick up on the cross [Applause] good job by war the side passes short as it [Applause] slightly reception he came back on the comeback ride his feet came out from under but he's still against the ball loquats at the end of the play watch the birdie watch his feet come up whoops I fell down but I still got it amazing [Applause] [Music] [Applause] you've done a chance to go series [Applause] that's a second time we've seen the play in the box is the first time we saw one says Sean Jackson first time that he is running this year big time to huddle up and say big loss there cuz now [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] down at the 7-yard line it is Vanover the reception here's an interesting point I'll be interested to see what Bobby Bowden wants to do clearly they're down by 10 they're gonna go for the field goal [Applause] I think everybody knows that story yes what a gem wide right from 54 yards away let me stay here Charlie even if he does make the field goal Notre Dame made somewhat of a stand the Florida State 24 yards away and it is good so Scott Bentley hits from 24 yards a touchdown in an extra point with 1040 left [Music] it wasn't pretty but it was good and we'll be back with a kickoff in just a moment you don't want to miss this one [Music] Notre Dame football is brought to you by the United States Postal Service we deliver for you by State Farm Insurance like a good neighbor State Farm is there by GE from our generation to medical systems we bring good things to life and buy the new Chevy S series line of trucks so new from the inside out everything else is history you're looking at the face of Scott Bentley who just put the uprights from 24 within 700 I'll be kicking up clean Johnson is the deep back on the return settles with the will females this one [Music] [Applause] [Music] to go and clearly this is the wine has to reestablish the dominance that they had in the second quarter even though they do not have the win the play-action pass that was effective for them during that period of time that was with the wind and now they don't have the win they have to get their drug they can still afford to go 3 in front [Music] [Applause] [Music] Bethan cuts back he has the first daddy is [Applause] big-big first down and the first passing yard for Notre Dame in the a lotta credit this is the plate they added the first series of the game of miracle infected on third down got the first nice one-handed grab the secondary of coming up to make the tackle yeah he gets him down there but if a 35-yard big first down play Dayna 15 [Applause] and he has the ball in a couple of yards that's going to be hit as Ken Alexander was there to cover him at the 37 yard line it'll be second down and eight yards to go Notre Dame 24 Florida State 74 Notre Dame that completion just a moment ago was their first completion since the second quarter with three and a half minutes to go in the second quarter there's the man right there that the pressures on here the fourth we've got to mix it up we can't be predictable we can't just jam into the middle because they've been stopping our run to do second down and eight [Applause] Richard COEs and Derrick Brooks with the stop after 19 for Michael Miller once again a great call by home sand holds coming out fairly safe pass and Mike Miller all five 750 mm a great [Applause] the quarterback enable him to get to big block to spring Miller [Applause] and the 45-yard line so he picks up three it'll be second down and seven Notre Dame averaging 15 passes of organ in this barricade Lewis told us I could go as high as 25 he is Garth as high as 16 right now with nine minutes to go never bigger than those last two though Charlie check him down and shadow tied at the end of [Music] the intended receiver and victim abraham picked them up now it's third down except there's the man who wants to establish his own identity and nepotism has nothing the offensive coordinator for Notre Dame in fact he reminded us I was the first Holton that was here I was there's been a bigger call in the game I don't know what it is right now third and six he's got to come up with something special [Applause] Notre Dame only 3 of 10 opportunities in the [Applause] [Music] [Applause] two words for the Blitz that Sun holds on first down his second reception Chancellor Gilles much to people that never stop Google makes coming to his left he comes back very close the ball back still throws off the wrong foot it for Lake Dawson who had dropped two passes earlier Sweet Revenge and a tendency to say great [Applause] here's the [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] is becoming the ally of No eight minutes and running not been particularly infected but they bring it back change things up now there field position once against Brooks goes down the field the ankle hurting him a little bit the preceding evening Beckham get some extra yardage [Applause] he was tackled in the middle of a field there any breaks at least two or three showing the power running from the full-back position don't forget this drive started back at the Notre Dame 20-yard line with momentum shifting to the Seminoles following the field goal by Scott Bentley bullying within seven and the Irish had come back [Applause] [Music] [Applause] who wraps all the caverns when we talked with Jeff buzz he said he dreamed that he would have an interception and return it for 17 yards two rushing touchdowns [Applause] it will be assessed on the pickoff personal foul against Florida State assistant the kickoff not only that survey is going to help Notre Dame in terms of field position without extra 15 yards kicking into the wind for the gas to [Applause] 217 [Applause] which 653 lat [Applause] six-fifty in Stanford reception has been four rushing touchdowns there it breaks two more tackles running right through the arms the Fedders Jeff Burris 2td that's a happy man [Applause] Abraham pushes him into the crowd if there's a knock you're bantha burst that's him [Applause] this is Charlie Jones Todd Christensen Bob Costas OJ Simpson John Dockery 6:53 left to go Notre Dame Stadium Notre Dame 31 Florida State 17 don't forget that Vanover as Charlie mentioned earlier had a 50 yard kickoff return average last year so if for some reason Pendergrass can't kick it out of the end zone for Florida State to get a return [Applause] wind catches this one but he was taking from his 50-yard line to touch back out first play of the drive the momentum is all Florida stakes the crowd is quiet and they're gonna run the ball right wrong take the zellers come out to Becton you can argue that that might have been the biggest play of the game because both the Holts has decided we have to attack we can't lay back that changed the course of Florida State's defense huge drive for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish the ball at the 20-yard line 653 time remaining the seminars [Applause] [Music] wide receiver back and Charlie slides across the 30 the market down at the 31 yard line you'll pick up the first down does a couple of things gets the ball upfield stops the clock that moved to change now is 644 left to go things about college football because they do stop the clock with the chains [Applause] [Music] [Applause] tomorrow Vanover the intended receiver and Charlie was about four yards over his head it'll be second down in ten back at the 31 yard line when pushed that one a little bit deep of the Charlie Ward wanted Jeff Burroughs had the coverage bring it back 634 time remain one of the issues here during the drive is the fatigue of the defensive backs for a Notre Dame you see in the back you see purse and table of hand that could be a factor [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] this is the full-back Floyd and he's going to go out around the 35 or the 36 yard line so it'll be third down in about five yards to go Greg was there for Notre Dame - all of a sudden the Seminoles face it very crucial [Applause] what [Applause] - touchdown - six minutes left adjusting their point the margins and 11 points [Applause] [Music] [Applause] did not come down Bryan Hamilton was bringing the pressure on Charlie war that choice rolling to his right and having to come back these sidearms at the cross [Applause] [Music] had the coverage for no 6:22 feels that's a lot of time Shawn lips will be kicking yeah it is but the point is is that even if he kicks the ball deep they're gonna take some time off the clock with the running game I don't like this I think he's got situation this is the sixth time that he is kept in Nevada [Applause] we're looking for a possible gadget play is not there here's the kick with the Lana took [Applause] now he did that before he's got to be doing that on instructions from the back the charge on the check we're looking down a Notre Dame Stadium from the Goodyear blimp spirit 103 blimps operated by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company you might have noticed the light here Notre Dame in the fourth quarter a special thanks to must go light for bringing in their portable lighting towers brightening up our pictures as darkness begins to set him here in South Bend in the end before the lights are really good too 6 minutes and 14 seconds that is the time remaining Notre Dame with the football at their own night to segue the lights out over charlie I think the lights are out on the Florida State sideline by not going for it on fourth down the 6:14 left doesn't have to some time off the I said the fact forecasting only has one timeout less it's not as if they could stop Beckton and he has formed under at the 18 he will lose a yard the defense led by James Roberson number 47 so it will be second down in the 11 in the first nine games of the year the Seminoles defense gave up two rushing touchdowns today Notre Dame has scored four rushing touchdowns against this defense Notre Dame leading 31 to 70 eleven and like Todd said they're going to be contended just to run some time off of the clock but don't forget a few go a touchdown and two points in your time it's a rate it's a reach right now it gets the time two touchdowns here Charlie why can't these go a touchdown going for two and get the just don't have time times they have to get to field goals and get a touchdown attitude for a conversion touched let's discuss right eight nine ten eleven they're down excuse me I I can ask this off they're down by 14 you're right excuse me right all right that's okay I'm excited too it's a four-team I said eleven there it is that's making a fish on it's 14 down and that's the dead-ball delay of course they're just they want to use up as much time as possible five minutes is it that is only the second Notre Dame penalty today remember one of the things that mu host told us no foolish penalties that one was not a foolish penalty we're just taking more time off the clock 457 now it starts to count down again [Applause] razors Roberson and Jenn Alexander see here I'm surprised this would have been the time for me if I'm Florida State to take the time out stop it now because Notre Dame not only will come out of the field and snap a problem with one second left they might even think about taking the delight even though that will hurt them in terms of field position what they're concerned with now is taking as much time off the clock as possible 12 seconds and counting on the 25 second five coming [Applause] the 40 yard line he would've been he would have been smart there just to let the ball go cuz as long as the ball is going there's time off the clock not only as you mentioned 10 seconds left on the big when he snap involvement there on the ball pass let the thing run take some one-time dollars call at 5:00 and as you mentioned that that could be that could be enough time to get two touchdowns 405 left in the ballgame and Florida State as good field position they will start at the Notre Dame 45 yard line [Applause] [Music] at this point if you're Notre Dame you're backpedaling this just isn't gonna work this is the kind of give up that's going to fool people because nobody thinks that you're going to run the ball everybody knows you're going to pass Burris is sitting in the secondary waiting for it it's actually a good play by McCrory just to get rid of it Sean is checking down and am still at the 45 yard line now in 357 that is the tyrant Florida State down by swinging inside will you employ it he needs to get out of bounds and he does it he is dead well that's gotta be a path that is a car [Applause] the Lord says write down amongst his players and he's not one foolish privileged and that really was clearly he's out of bounds of Justin go he wants to get a hit and Lou Holtz is actually coming out of the field to talk to him unbelievable he can't believe that that happened nose to nose and go hain will be coming out of the lineup clearly out of bounds right here he steps out in the least two yards out of bounds absolutely unnecessary forego Hina Reports is upset about he's not upset with the official he's upset with go here because he knows he knows that that was a good car [Applause] Fisher comes out with the ball and the tempers beginning to flare just a bit the state has to expedite the process here with the clock running now 327 and Counting they can't afford the lunch Florida State with only one timeout remaining to the nearside there's a flag down why Gerry's he's going to step out of bounds at around the 10-yard line but there was a flat across the field at the 13 yard line 14 yards on and we still have just over three minutes to go was still the large opportunity if we can store on sites kick and can still pull this one out I would think they're going to refuse this because they have the first down and the clock stopped [Music] one thing we might mention about the officials we talked with daya Phillips yesterday they've been looking at taper both bar clubs familiarizing themselves with both of the offenses and the defense is part of their preparation for this thing [Music] [Music] holding on the far side of the field here's a look at it because he comes up field becoming a bouncing the holding is actually on the other side of the field now here's the interesting point here Johnny if they can score [Applause] three in front of in user timeout from the sex first down gold Charlie run [Applause] second down oh goodness that will stop the clock 249 left in the game if this is what I think it is if it's a personal foul against hey soos Hernandez a late hit or that's gonna be awful for Florida State we have a goal [Applause] [Music] the defensive back situation like this three minutes elicits unless it's Blake let go directed at his second [Applause] by the time throwers pass is complete to man fire he steps out of bounds it's about 239 remaining and again a reminder the score is Notre Dame 31 the state seventeen and even it comes out now 14 points that's the margin I feel so bad [Music] badly now for hey-zeus Hernandez because that play not only puts them back even if they score the touchdown the time is completely off the clock well that's just that's awful for Florida State hate to see that happen and John it is Kevin Knox who has a touchdown reception the bar he and John Covington [Applause] into the bar right there in his arms slips through right there at the last minute Covington gets a piece of the ball bounces out workers say fourth down the scoreboard says the third day probably that penalty Charlie was after the plays a dead ball foul the play counter and we Paul start the right side of the offensive line of the seminar or Garston other phone you know what's too bad these great teams and what has happened that it has to come to this and some of the goofy mistakes here at the end of the sad to say ball [Applause] [Music] so the perfect season for the Seminoles Bobby Bowden shot at the national championship [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] 26 seconds left [Music] did you get not to do that just for fun and here is the extra point [Music] in the middle of the field here's the seed round right there and take a look turns around the balls right there gets him in the hands if that's up in the air right there right we should be in coverage coming out right at us number 17 it's hot but Corby's concentration right on the ball [Music] and the reaction of Bobby bathroom and the reaction of all we'll be back with the onside kick as the Sun is setting over Notre Dame Stadium we have 226 left to go in the ball game are we looking at the possibility but on the sides get must go to or be touched by one of the receiving team to be recovered by Florida State and leave it up to the defense it's an onside stick it goes 10 yards Notre Dame [Applause] the heart of Florida State to go with the left foot surprising for coming almost white shirts bearing down on him and he's still able to hang on he's got to be hurting a little bit John Wooden number 22 is the man who recovers the onside kick and he asserted I can tell you for I can tell you from personal experience Charlie everybody is pointing for you it's it's unbelievable everybody's bearing down they want to hurt you ball at the 47 literally the line of scrimmage still some time left 250 no counting and now Florida State will take their last timeout Richard COEs breaking that last tackle now what does all this mean right now it looks as if Notre Dame if they can hold on they would take over the lead spot thought his date would have a loss they're going to drop down Miami is currently third this is the ball coalition the Nebraska Ohio State Tennessee Auburn month of age ending in Florida West Virginia Texas I think the big question here charlie is how far down this Florida State drop if indeed the score ends up the way it is at 31 to 24 you put Florida State handily beat Miami earlier in the season or is it inevitable that if Lambert awareness related games at Miami and Notre Dame would find themselves in the Fiesta Bowl for the national championship but also Lurky is Nebraska Nebraska is undefeated they have two games remaining a big one at home against Oklahoma and Nebraska one today against Iowa State and should they win big against Oklahoma they might move back up in this point you know they're higher in one of the other polls and they feel is being undefeated is that they should be the number two team following this bargain that certainly is the big debate right now as to why Miami seems to be garnering more more votes in that poll despite the one loss even though as you mentioned the Brassica sent the fatal check in down in town [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and there is not anything there this is Jeff Burroughs who has scored a couple of touchdowns off of that formation but Kevin MacDougall is running the formation we have an injured player down that stops the clock with 2:05 the time remaining here the boos from the crowd they're wondering if this guy's faking it todrick Mackintosh just to stop the clock it will be third down and about eight yards to go Marc Edwards the freshman from Norwood Ohio has checked into that offensive line if that's the first time that we have seen him this afternoon now again hindsight is 20/20 but if this is 205 you figure that Bentley could have kicked the ball out of the end zone they take it on the 20-yard line if they're running the same course of plays it's on the toilet and second-guessing is wonderful is converted only for but remember the last sequence when they started from their 20 Notre Dame came out throwing and looking for some big plays to get upfield so I'm not sure we've seen the same sequence of plays so it is third down any and now the clock has started two minutes and counting time remain [Applause] there's no concession for adding that time in the last two minutes when somebody is injured [Applause] some players before the state sideline [Music] raise Ehlers and now Notre Dame will just let the clock continue to run now for two states smart bake bounced up here now they can putt the ball 28 27 26 22 seconds and counting on the 25 cents the 25 checking back on the left let that run all the way down absolutely at this point the five yards isn't gonna be in concept they'll probably take the penalty [Applause] [Music] [Applause] this also brings up an interesting point though Charlie as they take we call timeout just before the penalty things of an interesting point the risk maybe of taking a run back at this point with a minute left in the game you know that got to let it all hang out maybe see if he could set up a return they went for the block last time and that [Music] Vanover back at your putt returner give it a shot they may just do that he's your big return the Seminoles huddling on the far sideline let me say at this point to Charlie regardless as we just a news we just saw Charlie Ward in my opinion I think he's still a Heisman Trophy winner regardless of the outcome of this game today I think a lot of people felt that way coming in everyone wondered coming into a ball game of this magnitude this a game that kind of gets away from everybody well it certainly hasn't factor has been the defense of Notre Dame that they shut down the Sonos particularly in the second quarter gave their offense a chance to move out in front and Notre Dame leads 31 to 24 you see with 102 left Florida State is going for the block they do not have a return man they do they need one guy back just socially so the guy can't let it roll and killed kill the cockpit needs somebody to catch at least a fair catch it if nothing else it's going to be down the ground number eleven right he should have picked it up because once you have touching by the kicking team past the line of scrimmage you can always get devyn Bush had a shot there the ball is [Applause] the second take now watch but the ball is not completely down at Kentucky now watch number 11 left of your screen if you get a chance to see it go he didn't think of it [Music] one seconds left Charlie Watts [Music] [Applause] this gets up on the part of Ward oh man never say die [Applause] the flag came down right at the start of the plug [Applause] against Notre Dame water state down by seven and of course you know in college ball a touchdown you can go for two and Bobby Bowden has said sometimes it's tougher to go for one but every time I've gone for two and then he hasn't been that successful not when the game has been on the line we have offsides on the defense penalties refused [Applause] there was the play now they want the penalty telophase not we want the play cuz they won't first so it is second down in show fires passes debris 50 arrow [Applause] hustle up because it's a even though the clock structure they've got to get sent they've got to be ready to go to Monaco start as soon as that changes that you can see one in a hurry trying to get it so as soon as the official business on if he can he can hike the ball that's done he's taking too much time at least six second stone [Applause] he's got to get out of bound Jenny died 17 seconds left cosmic garbage good for 18 and what an afternoon Ken's McGarvey has had Tim [Music] here one can take its time he also realized the 17 seconds up he doesn't necessarily have to he can float in the middle to peel and get the first down pull-up spike the ball the chance of two shots and ends [Music] he's going to get up he's gotta get everybody just to stand there inspect the ball stop momentarily gonna change get though that's a cocktail instead where is this thing [Applause] [Music] I'm really surprised he didn't spike it there Charlie you have had two more chances now it's all down to this one play all the game of the century it comes down to one play they take some time I told you at this point try that I said now it has to be decided here the Notre Dame side for Rick Miller is the last time what they did is they rushed three and they backpedal everybody into the end zone and take a chance here with the Blitz I don't think so I think you got they want to do [Music] give a chance to get the bottom of the field it's gonna be interesting great chess match going on the store and this is a moment the body back in his tricks this would be the time three seconds to go Nashville title [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] 24 [Applause] years old [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] a great football game charity ward they refuse to quit aren't cleared then either it's one game and I think lived up to all the hype lived up to all those moments [Music] humans at the end all you can do is stay focused you know you're going to be in a safer game they're every bit as good as I thought we played well we're happy [Music] [Music] I can hear a thing congratulations [Music] [Music] and that was the voice of bobby bowden talking about the turnovers in the reaction of the florida state seminoles ken alexander a finalist for the road scholarship you can see the frustration on his face he thought this was his turn he's a senior he thought it was going to be his turn for the national title give Notre Dame credit look at that you can just see the frustration there is the resilience of youth but it's just so tough to take at this point you're so close and it comes down to that one play and it's taken away from let's go down to oj [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] we have some technical difficulties the Irish number one abso lutely you know it's interesting I Cana a little of it earlier and Bobby Bowden tipped his hat to Notre Dame and he also made the point that the two turnovers that they had were crucial in the first half Notre Dame again did not turn the ball over four and a half games they didn't do that mistake free football is the reason Notre Dame won today and as close as this game was Florida State could drop only to number two that is one of the possibilities the Bulls will come out later with the mix of everything else that has gone on this weekend as we are beginning to wind and now we have everything said let's go down Oh Joe you got over to Miami there's your old friend Lou Holtz your feelings right now well I wish we could have won it but we lost the darn ball here and there heck they're great ball club man I mean they're good as I look at his ass thing hopefully you'll get to see them again on New Year's Day I wish we could run the rest of our game and get a shot again but they're pretty darn good thing that you can think of right now that you would do differently oh no I think the two turnovers we turned it over twice that was far the difference in the game plus the wind affected us and you're throwing the football two quarters in hurt you we got all our interceptions a bad plays in but they saw you get a chance to correct it until your New Year's Day so and like a heavyweight championship bout the ball coalition could well decide if there is a rematch on the horizon if if Riddick ball in Evander Holyfield er do it again what would prevent Florida State a Notre Dame from doing it again in the Fiesta Bowl he rolls to his left he sees an opening at the end but there it is right in front wooden back sit down and it's a victory for the domer the last three seconds and time runs out on Florida's Day needed to get just a little bit more air under this and look at wooden he knows where he is on the field jumps up great play Notre Dame is victorious what a game and you notice that fryer was a at the five take a look at the reaction of Charlie Ward all of it has come down to this one play though wants to get implacable a lot of class that young man Heisman Trophy winner for 1993 and now we're set as the crowds have stormed onto the field here the Chevrolet players of the game cosmic car via Florida State and Jeff Burroughs of Notre Dame in conjunction with this program Chevrolet will contribute two thousand dollars to the National Association of financial aid administrators word especially deserving college students so that they may continue you look for the big games you want to be there you want to be involved you want it to live up to what it could be and it certainly did and I'm pleased to be here with you what a thrill mr. Charlie you said it this is what you hope to be a part oh there's just one very small problem for us we've lost the camera and all the confusion so we'll say goodbye Bobby Bowden is a great coach he may yet have a chance in a certain scenario for a national title this year but today belong to Lou Holtz and the Irish strategically statistically emotionally and with finality Notre Dame's Brandon Knight III was the same as it is right now I think it stands for excellence over time it stood for the traditional power and college football notre dame was was the history of the sport lou holtz had this team rolling they had come close to winning the national championship a couple of additional time since 1988 fans expected this to be a terrific year I mean it was never dating back in the early nineties I mean we were coming off of you know the 88 national championship you expected to win and everything you you
