[Music] welcome back to the shadlands and yes i'm wearing one of my shadowversity knights watch outfits why am i doing that well because uh i'm kind of wanting an upgrade on this outfit and there's a bit of a project that's going to be involved with it and that is most definitely a shadowlands video so what's been going on you've got i have two main outfits that i like best with shadowversity in actual fact i have a main outfit that's my favorite and that is obviously the red brigandine i have explored different options in what makes it more wearable i got a metal one and that was too heavy i have a special kind of foam one that you can't eat it's really hard to tell the difference and i really do love that one and that one is a lot more wearable and so when i'm outside and moving around i usually wear that yet both have a significant problem uh not really it's not really that problem it's a it's a me problem and it's in relation to my health and it's that i have sleep apnea and what that causes and yes i've even have surgeries to try and fix it unfortunately those surgeries haven't they've helped improve it and i have moments where i'm a bit better but then other moments it's as bad as ever and what that happens is i i i stop breathing while i sleep and that puts a lot of strain on my chest and lungs and i can wake up and it's literally like i've been suffocating myself uh all night and it makes it really hard to breathe and so i'm not sure if you've ever experienced where you breathe in and then your lungs after you've taken the breath in it's like your lungs are still expanding and you can hear air still go kind of sucking in and stuff and so that makes it really hard to wear anything that constricts my chest and waist and those brigandines they are a bit bit tight even when i try and loosen them just that constriction makes it very very hard for me to wear and so you might have noticed on chat diversity i've been wearing this outfit far more often because it's so much easier it's uh it's more comfortable there's no real restriction and so i might even be moving over just being wearing this outfit more often also you might notice what i wear with it is this chainmail uh printed hoodie that i designed this is my own design with you know authenticating chainmail it's available on the teespring store that i wear in conjunction with it it's really comfortable it gets the look i want and i'm still very happy with it yet if this is going to be becoming one of my main outfits uh you know that it's not like authentic when you get up close and even from a distance it doesn't hold up to perfect scrutiny because you can clearly tell that it is cloth and the thing that really tipped me over the line is that uh we're looking at going to some uh going to a the big medieval festival here in australia which is actually located in queensland the abbey medieval festival we've been there once we're looking at going again and with all the walking around that i'm going to be doing there i won't be able to wear that brigand it'll be too constricting and uh too exhausting and i want it difficult to transport difficult to transport and i just want to enjoy myself and so therefore i'm going to be wearing this one yeah that's it's at a festival and that's where reenactors are and everything like that and this is just not going to hold up to scrutiny and so i've been trying to find light wearable uh more a realistic looking chain mail and i've been looking at plastic ones and i couldn't find it like i know somewhere somewhere makes it name it plastic but no i couldn't find a good quality plastic one i didn't i don't obviously need a full haul burke and everything and so all right i i kind of i i was already i mean aaring about aluminium and i kind of bit the bullet and so i bought these from makeyourownmedieval.com now i already have a bit of a business contact with make your own medieval because they sponsored the last shadowversity meet and greet at the abbey medieval festival and even donated some prizes for the contest that we held which is brilliant and so they're a great company uh and uh and they were the only ones that had these so i was looking for this so check these out aluminium riveted mail sleeves specifically this is exactly what i was looking for i didn't want a full horberg because the uh circuit hides it but i wanted something that obviously looks like real male but was far far lighter aluminium is more as like it's like only a third of the weight of steel is it might even be less aluminium is shockingly light and it really does the job there is one main issue with it and this is the purpose of the project that my wife the lady is going to be working on and that is it's far too bright aluminium is like look how bright this is doesn't actually look like proper steel that might be weathered or worn everything my wife is actually going to be painting it and we'll get i've already test worn it and i'll show you some of the problems so just taking off the circuit half right i'm gonna obviously have a different undershirt for this but i can still uh show it just for the purposes here a couple of things i really like this is actually it's got a a wider part here for the elbow so do you see this part hanging down so that's the actual wider part for the elbow so if i get that in the right position oh makes bending the arm really really easy so it's actually really good mate it's got like that that very specific feature but a couple of things see how it's longer than the wrists whatever shirt i wear under for some reason just casual movement pushes whatever i'm wearing under up up up and so the point where it's hanging here and so we're going to be sewing and fixing these sleeves to an actual undershirt or even to this my wife knows how to do it she's a quite an experienced and competent seamstress and so she's going to figure out the best way to fix it to a shirt and also that's after we paint it though so it's going to be painted to a darker color darker metal color obviously uh and then get the way to undershirt it and then what'll happen is that i can always put the shirt on have both male sleeves on either arm and then circle over top and so that is my intro portion done and i will let the lady take it from here so here we are the first step that we're gonna do is use some terps just clean up any oils and grime and things on them so that the spray paint will adhere to it we've got three different steps of spray paint and that'll hopefully help it to adhere i'm just going to spray paint them lightly just to darken it a bit um without it making it look kind of solid and plastic so let's start with the terps little coughing boy what'd you do swallow a fly so i've just started wiping it with chirps i just wanted to show you what i'm dealing with while i'm working so we have the chatterbox thunder warrior he's been jumping up and down on the trampoline and chatting the whole time and telling me all about his day and the dog underfoot and let's get to work together shall we so i don't want to drown it in terps i'm just kind of spreading someone okay and then just kind of wiping it down i'm just trying to get rid of any oily bits and the cloth is getting a little bit dark a little bit from the oils a few little blotchy spots next we're going to be putting this one on because that's step one that's it does smell a bit different yeah so we've just put the primer on and it's it's kind of a gray color but we'll wait for this layer to dry we'll flip it over and give another layer see what we can manage okay so we've got the first two layers down we've got the fisheline and the super etch primer now we're going to get on the actual hammered metal finish yeah i'm gonna get that on but i'm just gonna kind of spray it fairly high up and let it kind of go over lightly so it's also not all one kind of color [Music] okay so we've got a thicker amount kind of on here some thinner bits as well so we're just going to play around a little bit see what looks best i'm thinking kind of a little bit on the thicker side but without coating it completely might do the trick [Music] so this is where the lady got up to at this point here so we have laced the um two sleeves together over top of his shirt we were running into some issues before because uh these terminal sleeves are actually a bit longer now hanging down and so he needed to remove an entire row five rows of rings technically and the other issue we were facing is that this uh shirt was riding up underneath the chain now the 10 now hang down pull up hang down pull up and the shirt would be pulled up as a result so what the lady has done she has a sewn these rings here to hold that in place and then with the painted rings over the aluminium these actually look really really authentic and i'll show you now what it looks like in the complete version with the surcoat over top [Music] and this is what it looks like in the complete outfit and if you're wondering where i am one of the reasons why we wanted to get this done was to complete it just in time for coming here the abbey medieval festival and one of the reenactors were kind enough to lend us the tent just to finish off this video and show you what it looks like in its uh in its complete outfit and combined with the circuits and the gloves the length is just almost perfect because it doesn't bunch up too much over the gloves but it goes inside to complete the overall look and she's done an amazing job she's here with me she's behind the camera you want to say hello hi and uh what an incredible job i have a new chainmail based outfit looks far more authentic but it's light and breathable and it looks really authentic so just another little project here that we have done on the shadlands as we press forward building our parcels and our dreams [Music] [Music] you
