so you remember how in my super mario bros world record video i said that one of nisky's future goals was to get a 754 time in super mario brothers the lost levels well i'm sorry to say but nifski will never be able to achieve that but i do have some good news he achieved a 753 time instead [Music] no i didn't misspeak there on december 18 2020 speedrunner nifski who broke the world record in super mario brothers just a month or so earlier decided to chase after his next goal and one day got a record out of nowhere with a time of 753.936 and super mario brothers the lost levels any percent i think it's fair to say that more people focus on super mario brothers instead of its less appreciated sequel but no matter how much you know about it this run is debatably more insane than what is done in its predecessor speaking about the run at hand here besides the sheer craziness that is getting two competitive tight records within a month nifski did something even crazier he broke two second barriers at once at the end of one of his live stream sessions nifski decided to do a few attempts that went for extra time saves that humans weren't generally going for yet these extra time saves would be enough to get a 7 minute and 53 second time the previous record was a 755.317 by decate who is ultimately the winner between a world record competition between cosmic sunwest and takate himself that happened earlier in the year so how did nifski save so much time over the record well if you watched any video explanation of super mario bros you were probably familiar with the frame rules the exact same frame rules exist in lost levels as well frame rules are used to keep track of time in the game in super mario bros and the lost levels these frame rules are used in terms of when to load levels these games don't keep track of individual frames which means the individual frames don't matter during the run besides the last level before the run ends which is 8-4 these frame rules last 21 frames or 0.35 seconds many may use an analogy of frame rules being a bus that stops it every 21 frames if that's how you want to look at it anyways while runs have gotten more and more optimized runners have found different glitches and strategies to save just enough frames to make an earlier frame rule in multiple levels just like super mario brothers it is probably best that i break this down level by level i would like to thank nifski for dedicating a bunch of time to answering every question i had about every single level this game is not the most documented so thank nifski for helping me explain the rest of this video just like in super mario bros nifski performs a flagpole glitch at the very end of 1-1 but this flagpole glitch is actually a lot newer in lost levels the previous record by takate didn't even go for the glitch this means that nifski is 0.35 seconds or one full frame rule ahead of the previous record already how do you do this flagpole glitch though while the inputs for the actual glitch execution are the same the setup is not kriller37 who has discovered a lot of setups for both super mario bros and the lost levels found a good setup for flagpole glitch in 1-1 to set yourself up just right to perform the fly pull glitch and save time you need to perform what is called a super jump off the first koopa at the beginning of the level a super jump is a trick that you can do in this game or if you time and hold jump just right you can get a bunch of extra height off a koopa based on what frame you start in 1-1 this super jump is either a 2 or a 3 frame window but that isn't it though while jumping in mid-air here you need to hold both down and right and let go of right before you land back on the ground again you now have a good setup for the flagpole glitch all you need to do now is perform the actual glitch itself the inputs here are not like 1-1 at super mario brothers though it is actually similar to what is done to save an extra frame rule with flagpole glitch and 8-1 which is currently not being used in world record in super mario brothers but definitely will be sooner or later 1-2 in this game is way more complicated in comparison to the original game besides having some tight movements nifski performs both a ball jump and clips into the wall to breeze to the warp zone nifski said that for this wall jump here he does a strat that gives inconsistent sub pixels for the wall jump but ultimately ends up being faster in the section with the goombas by slowing down and going backwards like he did you will get more speed and lesser of an x position which ultimately means that after nisky performs a wall jump he will get to the pipe quicker traditionally what top runners did was only hold right and b the entire level instead of going backwards like nifski did here doing traditional fast strategy allows you to always hit the ball jump pixel but nifski wanted to save extra time and decided to go for the inconsistent strategy and it saved enough frames to ultimately save him a frame rule and 1-2 this is the first time that nifski had even gotten this time save in a single run which is why he got a gold split here this isn't it for 1-2 though what about the clip at the end how is that done this clip is pretty similar to the clip that is done in high level super mario brothers speedruns and 4-2 with just the right timing of your jump pressing right and then jumping again properly you can clip into the balls there is more of a catch in this level though unlike 4-2 and the original mario 1-2 here requires a sub-pixel setup what nifski does is doing a jump off the set of coin blocks at the beginning of this room this allows him to get sub-pixels that enables him to perform this wall clip 4-1 isn't too bad at all there isn't any special flagpole glitch or clip that you have to perform there are a couple of tricky looking jumps though like having to slow down for the spiny here but in the grand scheme of things though this is definitely one of the easier levels in the run 4-2 is where the expected craziness of a high-level speed run returns probably the scariest looking flagpole glitch is done here at the very end just like everything else in this run there's a setup for that just like in 1-1 kriller has a really good video both explaining and showing off his setup what you are about to hear is quite crazy for being a strategy that humans use to start off you need to perform a frame perfect jump off this cannon hold down and right in mid air land on the question mark block then let go of down before hitting the ground did i lose you there yet anyways the rest of the level just requires holding run and jumping through until you need to perform precise inputs at the end for flagpole glitch what is even cooler about what both nifski and kriller do is performing the flagpole glitch from the bottom part of the level here instead of the top the top route is slightly harder due to this koopa being in the way i don't know about you but i think this bottom route looks cooler sadly this is the last flagpole glitch in the run but don't worry this isn't even the peak of the run yet unlike in super mario brothers this run goes through an extra world in the any percent category the warp zone that takes you to world 8 in this game is located in world 5 instead of world 4. so here we are 4-3 to be honest this level is quite underwhelming but there is a key factor here bullet bill patterns in the second half of 4-3 random bullet bills fire in random positions well random to an extent bullet bill patterns are actually based off when you start the game and what current frame rule you were on nifski explained that you have to do a slight slowdown at the beginning of the level before jumping off the spring in order to get consistent bullet bill patterns with the frame roll that he is on this minor slowdown may not seem like much but it guarantees that you know where bullet bills fire assuming you know what frame rule you are currently on you fight more than one bowser in this any percent speed room what does that entail then bowser patterns bowser doesn't always move the same way when you encounter him based on what frame roll you are on he could simply just jump upwards or jump backwards niski said that with the frame rule he was on in his record going too fast would give bowser a pattern that made him go backwards which would probably lead to death what nifski wanted to do here was off to go a little bit slower instead to get a good pattern playing around in practice with how different frame rules affect bowser patterns runners can prepare for how to play 4-4 based on what frame rule they entered the level with this he knew that he was three frame rules ahead of the previous record and knew not to take bowser too fast in order to get a desirable pattern [Music] do you remember how at the very beginning of the run a trick called a super jump was performed off this koopa well that isn't the last of it the most important thing in 5-1 is getting over this giant wall normally you are supposed to hit invisible coin blocks that allow you to progress but that's slow instead you can abuse the super jump mechanic mentioned earlier and get a high bounce off the first koopa here this jump has a couple more frames of leniency over the 1 1-1 due to the angle that you hit the koopa at normally these koopa's positions would vary in runs but a runner by the name of lakuki found a consistent setup that involves hitting this vine block if you jump at just the right time in order to hit this block you can change the koopa pattern which allows you to know what position the koopas will be in every single time this level may seem quite tame but i can assure you that the rest of the run is quite the opposite if you are familiar with the original super mario brothers you may be aware of the concept of wrong warping by manipulating the screen's position you can trick the game to hit a warp zone via a pipe instead of the intended method of climbing up a vine now completely forget about all that because what you're about to see is a completely different beast instead of simply entering a pipe to activate a warp zone what if you had to clip into it just like in the original 4-2 in this game the intended warp zone entrance is via a vine that is activated by hitting a block around early 2017 runners discovered and started using a new strategy involving this pipe stopping under the right side of the pipe jumping clipping inside the pipe and mashing jump made mario wrong warp to the warp zone that takes you to world 8. over the years runners would perfect this newly discovered glitch and found that you can clip on the left side of the pipe with the right subpixels niski in this run went for a faster frame rule city than ever before this setup saves a frame rule that is commonly only saved in tool assisted speedruns a runner by the name of hitscritz found an easier setup that allows mario subpixels to be just right for the pipe clip this sub pixel setup involves holding down and right while walking off these blocks the setup isn't the hard part though the wrong warp is debatably the tightest and most technical trick in this run to get this extra frame rule time save you need to mash jump really fast while mario clips inside the pipe run a little bit to the right to scroll the screen and press down to go through the pipe if you don't scroll the screen far enough right the wrong warp won't work at all and if your mashing was too slow you can sometimes just barely miss the fastest frame rule just getting his trick in ending capacity which was dubbed the devil's spell was hard enough tecate's previous world record still did the standard variant of this glitch by clipping through the right side of the pipe just like nifski did in super mario brothers he added a new frame rule of time safe that was only previously done in tool assisted speedruns and was never expected to be done by a human in real time after performing one of the most impressive time saves in mario nifski just had one more world to conquer world 8. 8 1 is a lot more tame than the clip that we just saw before things of note here are having to worry about hammer brothers delaying quickly to ensure that the koopa is low enough to bounce off and really that's it just three more levels to go nerves are getting higher and the end of the run is getting closer the nerves may be ramping up but 8-2 is not the time to let them get in the way will 8-2 take another victim well not today you may be in awe of how the end of 8-2 looks and you wouldn't be wrong to feel that way nifski has to time a left-facing jump land on the koopa while hitting the vine block and landing on the block to the right as well as instantly jumping left onto the vine that may sound like a hard task to perform and it is well kinda multiple runners that i talked to said that kneeling 8-2 isn't the hardest thing in the world but many things can still go wrong such as not landing back on the koopa what is interesting to note here is even though nifski's performance here was amazing he still lost a frame rule against the previous world record why is that well you can actually squeeze out an extra frame rule of time save if you climb up the vine at the end faster you can climb up this vine vaster and skip some of its animation by quickly letting go of the vine and jumping all the way up to the top nivsky said that he opted out of this extra frame rule due to being such a difficult time save so late into the run hitboxes in this game are not the best and you can sometimes clip through the vine if you go through the extra frame roll a runner's heart rate is probably going off the charts at this point and any mistake and input could completely end the run in 8-3 you need to squeeze past the lakitu a bunch of hammer brothers and time your jump off this moving platform in order to reach the flagpole i hope you're paying attention because in 8-4 there's no time to look away except that's basically what he does when entering this level multiple runners have told me that they actually use a strategy to time their jump at the beginning of 8-4 by quickly closing their eyes and opening them at the right time with the beginning cutscene of the level the first screen here alone may already present its own very tight challenge but that isn't even the beginning of how crazy this level is look at how nisky jumps under this podoboo here did you see how close it was nisky explained to me that on the framework that he was on entering 8-4 jumping past the podoboo was a frame-perfect window just pausing the footage you can see how close he gets performing a frame perfect trick at the end of an unbelievable speed run is quite a representation of how the human limit is being stretched in these games just four more rooms to go at this point the next room seems to be inspired from 8-4 from the original super mario bros which features a bunch of fire bars and bloopers following that is a one screen room where the player has to jump over a wall to reach a second pipe this room can actually be quite tricky to optimize and i've actually seen top runners mess this up nifski starts this next room by performing what is called a fast excel in both the original super mario bros and this game mario accelerates the full speed faster when facing the opposite direction and can save a number of frames if performed correctly nifski nailed this fast excel and just had to maneuver through a couple of tricky koopa jumps before reaching the final room that would lead him to the new world record instead of having just one bowser enemy in the final room players have to get past two here runners have dubbed this first bouncer as bruce and many runners have lost amazing runs here to not being able to predict the pattern properly luckily though nifski was able to react perfectly to bruce's movement and based on his actions knew how the final bowser would react nifky says that with the frame rule he was on both bruce and bowser patterns are really good nisky also knew that based on the frame rule that since bruce threw two hammers after being passed it would give him an easier bowser pattern this predictable pattern led him to not the first 754 but the first 753 time oh my god what what what hell how how how an amazing end to an amazing run it was now in the history books 7 minutes 53 seconds and 936 milliseconds nifski had an 8-4 that was only one frame slower than the previous record his 8-4 would have been just as fast as decante but he lost one frame when grabbing the axe at the very end of the run with every frame counting in bowser during a run it's very rare to see two records back to back have such close performances in 8-4 just like any other world record the immediate question is what is next well that question is really hard to answer unlike the original super mario brothers where i could quickly name five different people that could steal the world record any day now lost levels is completely different with this run being a bit longer in length and having more and more precise tricks needed for the record new competition is looking less and less likely nifski himself states on his run submission that he doesn't think he will need to ever complete this category again and he never thought he'd go for 753 in the first place again this run was at the very end of a stream session where he did a couple of 753 attempts for fun his goal was a 754 not a 753 decate would be the second most likely person to contest this record but the probability of that is slim to none when nifski got his 753 ducati uploaded a short clip on his youtube of eating a stick of butter to celebrate how quote unquote butters move his new world record was and said in the description that he is retiring from the game that removed the two most likely candidates from ever beating this time and it makes complete sense in such an optimized and difficult run the record was smashed by over a second no one ever planned for a 753 to happen at all in the near future so who else could beat this time that i'm not really sure i'm predicting right now that this record is going to stand for a really long time and i don't think it will get beaten at all in 2021 let me know if you disagree in the comments maybe some days someone else will dedicate their free time to besting nifski's 753 and if you look at the top 10 runners there is a lot of potential in there the question is though does anyone really want to thank you for watching [Music] [Applause] [Music] you
