University of Bristol CIO delivers education with no boundaries

[Music] we are one of the first universities to acknowledge the climate emergency program and we are looking at all of our technologies to ensure that we are able to be carbon neutral by 2030 there's no way we could do this without vmware [Music] the university of bristol is one of the top 100 universities across the globe the university has a very clear digital vision by ensuring that we can bring digital technology to enable us to be boundary-less in the way in which we operate our education and research capability we had a perfectly adequate environment but we could also see that it was limited in its capabilities we need to be able to take workload from our digital stack and take it wherever the data may reside we couldn't do that with the technology stack we had some of the university partners the likes of the world health organization the met office more recently advisors come to the fore they all have very different requirements and what they need so what academia looks to us to provide is lots of compute lots of storage and the ability to manage and integrate with both private and public cloud providers we saw the benefits that the vmware platform and particularly the virtual cloud foundation could give us and in terms of being able to meet the demands and the expectations that the academic arena had it was almost a no-brainer vmware cloud foundation provides a large number of benefits to the university of bristol it's a great support to students and research all around the world and the ability to increase the delivery of services to their researchers and their students is a critical objective it gives us the scalability the elasticity of being able to change resources in their allocation so for us there's the pure end consumption of those resources by the academics it's a lot more simple it's a question of interaction availability but also globalization as a university we're working with more international partners that's in terms of both the research staff but also potential student base to have that availability online and integrated is key one of the ways that technology can really improve students ability to learn is that we can start to virtualize stuff that means labs can be used for longer it means then we can allow the labs to be used for independent study as well the students get more access to the labs and facilities than if we had to physically move machines out between stuff technology can transform education when i think about what we're doing with vmware we'll be able to speed up the way in which we can do our research we are now starting to see that the global platform is going to really open up and allow us to be able to work in environments we couldn't work in before we are being enhanced by the tools and techniques that we're putting in with vmware [Music]
