what we do to start with in our course is when people first arrive to sit for five minutes giving directions and not doing anything doing very much on the line before we get into the usual activities in our course of sitting standing lying down walking crawling etc so this is the period where people sit and just give directions after this period of not doing the teachers around giving people what we call turns a turn is a short bit of an Alexander lesson doing whatever the teacher feels inclined and helping the pupil of course to attend that direction in whatever they're doing [Music] you have to stop death like it's yes come come and sit here and with experienced people like our students when there's very much less talking with a beginner I would describe what I'm doing with my hands such as now I want you to think of freeing the neck and allowing your head forward and up and give them the directional experience with my hands then go on with that direction and think of your back lengthening and widening at the same time releasing the shoulders and letting them spread out and we have says directions again reading the neck forward not back to lengthen and widen and let the knees and hips Bend until we reach the chair good think of knees extending out of the hips and let the hands rest on the leg freeing the arms fingers wrists [Music] are you here with a fairly new pupil I'd be working on them working in the sense of transmitting directions through my hands but possibly a minute or two before I stood them up again but with days I'm gonna get in standing up understand up day think now and to free the neck think of the back lengthening and widening direct the knees forward and away and if still just standing up the usual way I'm going to ask you to come back against my arm training the neck getting the back lengthen and widen to come back and go on coming back as I take you up that's it good the idea there being to help the pupil not think of standing up because coming back against my arm is quite different and gives them a better chance of going on with their direction so that is a small demonstration of what I usually do with pupils with me telling new pupils I would you like no idiot why would I like how to be think about it yes I haven't said that well naturally I want them to thinking about the directions that I'm verbalizing for them and assisting them with my hands to direct themselves one thing we miss out in a demonstration this thought is it all becomes much too serious then they usually good smiling they'll not be able lengthening the fingers freeing the wrists and widening cross the upper part of the chest and the upper part of the arm and make good contact with the palm as you lengthen the fingers and hand on the table being the wrists free as you do it and watching that you're not tightening the ankles or the knees or the hips there's no freedom ink right and then stay there too long free the neck to take the hands off that's it and free the neck to straighten up again [Music] these such activity is putting hands on the back chairs or on the table or on the wall as we were doing the other day oh very good preparation for using the hands when you're giving lessons to pupils right and no scum will do on the wall a bit of variation all right [Music] yeah just like the nice girl so just the same you go on tree in the neck lengthening and widening the back to put your hand on the wall and since then you're gone okay and bring the hands down that's afraid the neck and straighten the knees and straighten freeing the neck lifting your back and the back to take the hands off me with that just straighten up the street when I was playing golf after I left University intending to be pro when I got good enough let's get you on quite well I was getting up the amateur playing side and paid with cotton two years and was told afterwards by Singh selectors that I should have been chosen from the team that came to the states who incidentally got beaten in Tahlia only I ever thought to be a bit eccentric well I was an acting it's intricate golf because I didn't have much money and I used carry my own went back to try and apply to golf and soon saw that I hadn't gone far enough and then I would gave up golf temporarily and went into Alexander's teacher training course and was running at the time mainly in order to get lots of work not actually with the intention of being a teacher that's how I started Tony it was a very good teacher I think but rather on the doing side and when he qualified he put out a template as to what he was going to do he's going to teach a dolphin square and gave one to Alexander and Alexander said oh you can't say that sort of thing and Charles me replied to that comment by sending a redundant lawyer's letter well that's a bit of a solid break yeah and he went teaching on his own and here Charles Neil did and I think he was a very effective and excellent teacher except that he didn't teach Alexander's principles of inhibiting and directing well for about a year I was thinking I was still intending to play golf and I don't know if I was still intending the second year of training and then the war came and I got married to Elizabeth and that makes a different sort of background I think I was always interested in applying Alexandra's principles to action in some sort found for instance at my school in rock climbing as a result of using myself a little less badly it was much improved went up about two grades incidentally and it's interesting because owning a distinguished Mountaineer called Bonnington is quite an enthusiast for Alexander's ideas mmm it's taught in the Lake District and his wife has joined a training course up there and Bonnington says the same that it certainly improves ones rock climbing ability I would think so but principally I think awareness of what one's doing improved sensory appreciation and the ability to direct it afresh in the new direction no I didn't apply to that I was interested in psychology did a course in Everdene University when I was working at golf now no I didn't think I thought of applying the Alexander Technique in a psychological sphere but thought it was pretty obvious that one should if possible but that'd be rather difficult and it seemed to be adequately described by a tendency to go forward and up that's what seems to happen it isn't much in the way of a movement it's much more in the way of a direction but it's saying appreciable to teachers hands if they get a pupil releasing their neck so they does in fact afford not as Alexander described in his definition of the head forward not it's relational thought but what he called the primary control the relationship of the head neck head a net to the back and mins which is indeed the case but it it doesn't leave it on its own I remember Alexander taking me out to dinner premieres he was very fond of three days that's a fish restaurant and I having such an investable meal there that I have to go I fortunately had a boat a sailing boat on the Thames that spend a good part of the night indulging in
