Underwater discoveries are, by their very nature, baffling to behold and whilst some of these cities are known to history others are mysterious and unexplained. Today marine archaeologists, historians, and divers explore these submerged cities almost as much as they explore ancient ruins on land, due to recent technology advancements in equipment such as, robots, submarines, and underwater cameras. Who knows what artifacts and relics they will bring up from the sea in the near future. https://www.dttvstudios.com/

top sunken cities of the ancient world anyone who yearns for the mysteries of Atlantis will undoubtedly have to deal with underwater sunken cities and ancient ruins there are literally hundreds all around the globe if Atlantis did go down underneath the waves each sunken city discovered is a constant reminder of their fate that cities do get submerged from the farthest epochs with so many cultures living near the sea in ancient times and modern with constant threats of sea-level rise is it any wonder Atlantis is more popular now than ever there are always claims that sunken cities are the remnants of this fabled ancient culture most likely a global maritime nation we have whittled down the most mysterious enigmatic and provocative ancient sunken cities from around the world in a quest to understand this phenomenon Heraklion a greek historian named daya doris wrote many tales about the heroes and gods that his people believed in one was the well known Heracles and according to records put down between 60 and 30 BCE he came to Egypt somewhere in the canopic region of the great Nile phonus as he was called an Egypt rule of the region for over 400 years but the Greeks who came later on renamed him as Heraklion to align with their hero on the spot where he supposedly came ashore they built a massive temple to honor him this city which is also called Heraklion was a very busy port for all types of trade in the Mediterranean region due to the giant temple that was built there it was also used prominently as a place of worship and attracted many who wanted to honor the gods specifically when the archaeologists investigated the site they found massive sarcophagi that probably had mummified animals inside there were also many statues carved exquisitely from stone that towered 16 feet overhead the relative rarity of these types of things in a temple demonstrated how important it was for the Greek worshippers it was also the site of the mysteries of Osiris annual celebration Heracles himself undoubtedly came from an older Egyptian god named shoe others believed that the source was sis otras another godlike hero that featured prominently in stories about great strength and accomplishment the reason why so many people worshiped at Heraklion may have had to do with the alignment of the gods strength with the idea that people from both countries believed about themselves the port city was a clear demonstration of the power they had in the region for both civilizations unfortunately the strength from the god hero and the people who built the amazing port city of Heraklion and sea temple did not extend to the land they built it on part of it was constructed directly on the nile delta which made the foundation suffered due to frequent flooding earthquakes and tsunamis and the type of erosion that would always come with such large and powerful river over the decades and centuries the land beneath the temple and city simply began to sink away around the years 200 to 100 BCE Heraklion began to vanish below the waves of the mediterranean sea part of this was due undoubtedly to the extremely heavy weight of all the stone buildings and statuary however any type of building on such a risky foundation as a delta River would have had quite a difficult time lasting for very long Yonaguni Japan one of the more intriguing sunken cities may not have been a city at all off the coast of Japan lies a unique underwater pyramid that some say was fashioned by human hands and others claimed to be a natural geological formation the legends surrounding it tell a tale of MU a city that supposedly existed somewhere in the Pacific that mirrors the intrigue and mystery of Atlantis is this pyramidal structure which is called the Yonaguni monument evidence of this civilization the man who may hold the answer is named Masaaki Kimura he's been studying this unique structure since the 1990s his expertise in seismology and marine geology allows him to be highly professional and precise in his research and surveying of the site Yonaguni most impressive feature is the massive pyramid that stretches 290 meters long and Rises 26 meters high above the ocean floor people compare it to the nearby Sheree castle in Okinawa which fuels the idea that it was man-made in the past the castle was constructed in the 14th century and rebuilt in 1992 as it was damaged heavily in World War two the investigation into this unique underwater monument also included the discovery of various types of artifacts tools and tablets that clearly showed signs of civilization in the area the tablets were carved with animals and various symbols of abstract designs the site also includes what appears to be a carved pool pillar bases and a large carved stone that looked like a turtle well it's obvious that these things were made by human hands some people still doubt that the monument itself is a created structure in the report by the experts who initially discovered and explored it suggest that it would be very difficult for this Yonaguni structure to have been made naturally due to its geological forces they could not find any fallen rocks that would undoubtedly occur if the large stone shelf was pushed tectonically out of the ground scientific research using beryllium 10 dating eventually showed that the structure was approximately two to three thousand years old this was verified by dating some of the corals that had grown off of the pyramid at that time before this final testing was done the Yonaguni monument was assumed to be over ten thousand years old because it would align with the time when that part of the sea was actually above-ground in those days which were at the cusp of the end of the last ice age a land bridge existed between Taiwan and China itself despite the questions about when the Yonaguni monument came to be the unique objects obviously crafted by humans found nearby and the lack of evidence for geological forces at work mystery still surrounds its creation some people still claim that it's simply an interesting bunch of rocks that happen to form under the water as more investigations go on hopefully some of the mysteries are solved and we can finally put to rest the idea that this unique sunken city was anything else the sunken city of havilah Petri off the pounded coast of Greece near southern Laconia and the pavlo Patrick islets lies evidence of an underwater town that is approximately 5,000 years old archaeologists believe that it is the oldest surviving sunken location on earth according to records the port town itself survived for approximately 2,000 years and was one of the first Mediterranean access points for what will become Europe it played a vital role in the beginnings of Western civilization Pavlo pantry was occupied from at least 20 800 BCE although some other researchers focus on a much later around 1500 BCE as dating techniques improve the truth comes out with more clarity the city itself was found by Nicholas Fleming in 1967 on behalf of Cambridge University the understanding of why the city sunk beneath the waves was due to an earthquake that affected the landscape around 1000 BCE there's enough geological evidence to prove that this happened and made a considerable change in the height of the land the age of this sunken Greek city was also called into question due to the apparent high design found within it some suggest that it could not be as old as other people think because it had elements found primarily in construction projects much later the general idea is that pavlo Petri was the main city in the area visited by farmers fishermen and textile craftspeople it was a place of trade and religious worship some of these details were determined because of the artifacts discovered in the area for example the archaeologists discovered weights that women and children would have used to work looms and produce textiles and cloth for clothing the geographic position of the city would have made it exceptionally important for trade as early as 3000 BC the regular shipping routes over the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas would have added to the riches that allowed it to grow so great it would have also contributed to the desire of the city planners and builders to make it as impressive as possible when the earthquake happened the pavlo petra city was flooded by the ocean waters it would have been a great loss to the people of Greece and from many other groups who traded with them at the time today you can still see many plazas temples foundations and even tombs laid out in an impressive footprint that you can easily visit with scuba gear Bay of Cambay India in the ocean west of India's coast in a park called the Gulf of Cambay lies a five mile long City that researchers suggest is older than all of the terrestrial cities by at least 5,000 years if this city which now lies 120 feet under the waves is truly 9,000 years old or older it would greatly impact everything that historians know and accept about the ancient world a group of scientists from India's National Institute of ocean technology was scanning the water for pollution and other modern problems what they found was a historical mystery the sonar they were using to check the underwater zone looks for three-dimensional objects by beaming sound waves from the boat to the ocean floor the researchers were surprised to discover a massive structure some 120 feet below the surface the study of the area shifted to a more archeological focus experts in marine archaeology came in and used sub-bottom profiling to get an accurate scan of the buildings and their foundations below the water this gave them a detailed three-dimensional plan of the city in the Bay of Cambay what they found was two massive blocks filled with different types of buildings and other structures the further studies revealed pottery sculptures beads from jewelry and human remains carbon dating put these people and their belongings some 9,500 years in the past which would make it one of the oldest cities ever found in the region before its discovery the 4,000 year old Harappan civilization was thought to be one of the oldest that would match the dates accepted for some of the oldest Mesopotamian cities on earth the much older dates influenced the entire idea of the historical record that historians usually believe about the rise of civilization around the world if this city existed 9,000 years ago it does not fit neatly into the timeline that's generally accepted by researchers of course it's impossible to get an exact accurate date for buildings that have existed under the sea for thousands of years a representative of the British Museum named Justin Morris reminds interested people that the part of India where the city is found only had villages and settlements since around 2500 BCE he cautions that it's important to study the artifacts more closely to actually determine when they were created carbon dating has been called into question quite a few times in the science of archaeology from a geological standpoint experts believe that the Bay of Cambay region would have submerged near the end of the last ice age when the ocean levels rose this occurred approximately 10,000 years ago that would align with the expectation that the city was that old but it still remains difficult to believe that the more advanced people who live there were simply wiped out and no one else appeared in their place for thousands of years as with all of these mysterious sunken cities much more research is needed by ax & Portis julius italy over two thousand years ago the Roman nobles and rich merchants would travel to Baia to relax have fun and hobnob with the other elite of this ancient society they inexpensive villas with luxurious pools and heated spas it seems a place very much like Las Vegas or Ibiza that was dedicated to the pleasures of life Cicero Virgil and Pliny all end residences here archeologists even found a Nymphaea which is a private garden or grotto with sensual statues surrounding it for privacy and inspiration this city lay approximately 30 kilometers away from Naples today much of it lies under the surface of the ocean Baez focus on the pleasures of life also led many people to come there to have affairs or dalliance --is then we're not acceptable in their everyday lives the volatility of the activities going on in this location is ironically mirrored by the volatility of the land beneath the foundations geological pressure would make the land rise and fall over long periods of time the city could have very well sunk beneath the water at times and then reimburse very few archaeologists came to this location before 2002 when it was deemed a place of public interest and began to attract a lot more attention its status as a marine protected area now allows archeologists and other divers to explore the ruins in a respectful manner the technology now used in these types of research studies such as 3d scanners and sonar have made it a lot easier to discover the buildings and other structures underwater this includes the infamous Temple of Venus which was actually a thermal baths various porticoes and rotunda's and all sorts of secret grottoes and courtyards interestingly enough many of the statues and other decorations discovered in Baia were removed from the water and taken up the hill to the local castle museum this is managed by the Archaeological superintendency for Campania replicas of the statues were put back under the water in the original locations so that adventures could see the sites as they originally were also a part of the city still remains above the water this was uncovered and studied by the man who also unearthed Pompeii Amedeo Maori in the 1950s people can see beautiful mosaics and intriguing structures without even getting their feet the continuing volatility of the land around bhaiyya presents a warning to people who would like to explore its wonders the ruins and all the modern structures of the people who live there the tourist attractions and fishing docks are in danger of disappearing as well the seismological activity seems to be increasing with dozens of smaller earthquakes reported annually cuban sunken city while stories of underwater cities that sunk beneath the waves many years ago come from all regions of the world there are some that were only discovered relatively recently a couple of people from Canada were working for the Cuban government in 2001 on a survey project to find sunken ships instead they found a highly unusual geometric structure at the bottom of the ocean it lies close to the Guana Haas peeps peninsula it was first discovered by dr. Paul wines wig and his wife Pauline zelitsky through the use of underwater sonar while most in the ocean floor was flat like a vast plane these three-dimensional protuberances looked very much like manmade buildings the mystery surrounding this underwater structure still remains well some people were quick to assume that the ruins were actually the fabled Atlantis the location and depth of the potential structures would make it too young scientists know that when the last ice age ended approximately 10,000 BCE the water levels rose considerably unfortunately this makes the underwater location very difficult to investigate because of its extreme depth still the waters around Cuba have been considered a potential location of Atlantis or other mysterious sunken cities from days long before expected civilizations were formed in the area many people have heard of the famous Bimini Road which still arouses curiosity to this day the soda are images taken by the original finders of the site wines Wigan zelitsky have been looked over by the National Museum of Natural History in Havana Cuba my experts including a geologist named Manuel Iturralde ate Venant he admitted that these structures discovered with the sonar are quite intriguing but still could be natural rock formations they found nothing like them and other waters in the region of the world he says these stone blocks cubes and pyramid shapes may be arranged as walls or the foundations of structures but there's not enough evidence to determine if this is precisely true or not one of the most intriguing features was a 12 inch grey stone plate that protrudes from a supposed wall it would be almost impossible for some natural geological forces to create such a thing unfortunately expence depth and treacherous conditions prevent any true exploration down to this unique location perhaps the mystery will be solved one day but until then the sunken city in Cuban waters will remain a topic of much debate and curiosity poom boo ha - Mele Nadu while much of the city of poem whoo-hoo still stands on solid ground and is currently the location of a beautification project intended to boost tourism numbers an intriguing part of it lies out of sight below the ocean whatever changes and updates are made today they cannot touch the unique archaeological evidence that the city itself used to be larger one clue about the mysterious sunken part of the city comes from the historical records in a literature that has not yet been translated into modern language a study in March 1991 conducted by the National Institute of Oceanography discovered a horseshoe-shaped wall that defined the outer borders of a strong stone fortification it stretched 85 metres long and rises 2 metres from the ground the space between the two walls of this u-shaped structure was just over 12 meters wide unfortunately lack of funding made it impossible at that time to explore the structure further it was generally covered by silt and sand and not much else could be seen or studied researchers dated this fort near Pompeu har to approximately the 200s BCE through the use of standard carbon dating unfortunately this seemed quite unusual because it would have been difficult for the structure to have been built at the depths it is now within that time there's no evidence that the ocean levels changed that drastically in just a few hundred years an expert with the National Institute named SR rau insist that the fort could not have been from the 3rd century BCE as carbon dating suggests due to the sea level changes he believes it was a much older structure that was obviously built on dry land at the time additional research into changing sea levels in the region will be necessary to find out the truth of the submerged horseshoe structure he points to a study of sea levels in the Indian Gulf of Kutch which showed a considerable change in sea level near the end of the last ice age around 10,000 BCE while this does not specifically speak for the pupu har region the ice age was a global event that did affect the oceans in many places determining the actual date of the supposed fort proved very difficult a scientist with Durham University Glenn Mill is an expert at creating sea-level maps for historical records according to his esteemed research the sea-level would only be low enough to build the structure at bumbu har on land approximately eleven thousand years ago was this fort constructed at the end of the last ice age the idea of this extreme time difference when compared with the official dating caused conflict within the research community it was mostly ignored Mahabali purim in india a combination research team funded by India's National Institute of Oceanography and Great Britain's scientific exploration Society discovered a highly unique archaeological site under the ocean near mahabalipuram although the seas are treacherous the team was able to send down divers who made a record and images of stone blocks pillars walls and steps that clearly demonstrate there used to be quite a lot of building activity there interestingly enough the first evidence in modern times of these ruins came in 2004 when a tsunami hit the area before the tidal wave comes in the ocean waters are sucked out of the shore when that happened people could see a straight wall of rocks and part of the foundation that was obviously made by human hands then when the tsunami hit the force of the water pushed a lot of the sand off the structures and even unburied a stone lion statue at a partially carved stone elephant on the beach the scientific community and the Archaeological Society of India and the Navy responded with various excavations and research projects they discovered quite a few different temples including one quite a bit larger than the current shore temple these were covered by sand for a very long time they've also discovered buildings that exist beneath the water at this time the concept of a global flood which features into a wide array of both religious and cultural tales all around the world may have had something to do with this extreme rise in sea level when the ice melted this may have been responsible for the lost temples of Mahabali purim additional research is necessary Fusion Lake China in the third largest lake fusion lake that lies in the union region of China lies a sunken city or town that's been lost many years ago the lake itself is about 210 kilometers square and as a maximum depth of 155 meters nevertheless a research diver named gangway discovered what appeared to be stone ruins far under the surface of the lake they considered of stone blocks pavers and flag stones and long strips have fallen pillars covered with moss gang-wise discovery created many questions about what these structures and building materials were and how they got under the water the first potential answer comes from a legendary story that was passed down from generation to generation through the village population some state that if they climb the mountains on a clear and sunny day you could see the silhouette of the city under the lake waters it would make sense that the ruins discovered there had something to do with this story after 38 dives to learn more about the mysterious sunken city in the lake gangway finally alerted the authorities this triggered a response by a Chinese archeology team who used submarines to explore the waters of fusion lake they saw the stone blocks and walls using sonar and other high-tech methods they were surprised to learn that the city itself was larger than expected about June a of kilometers square however this did not give them any clue about where it came from who built it or when I look back through historical documents discovered that a record made by Honshu revealed a mysterious city of yu-yan that existed from around 200 BC till around 9 C it's location was described as north of the lake but it's possible that it ended up under water due to geological shifting and rising water levels in order to determine if this was true or not the research team needed to determine how old the structures beneath the water were and if there were any artifacts that would give a clue about the people who live there finally after approximately two weeks of exploration they did discover some pottery or earthenware research into the structure and skill of these handmade items and determine that it's quite possible that this sunken city did exist during the time youand it additional research is needed in order to find something they can use carbon-14 testing on to find more precise information about when it was all built still it's quite intriguing to know that a legendary city that exists in local tales may have been discovered at the bottom of a nearby lake at leat YUM one of the oldest submerged cities lies near at leap village the ancient site called Otley yam was first constructed around 6900 BCE unlike other sunken archaeological sites this one consists of more than just a few scattered stone blocks and walls indeed at Li Tian covers 40,000 square meters and boasts houses gravesites wells and megalithic pillars and ceremonial sites it's currently around 10 meters under the surface of the water so it's relatively easily explored by marine archaeologists the first to find it was a you'd Galil who discovered it in 1984 the region around the Mediterranean Sea has always been seismological II active and the site of various earthquakes and tsunamis it's one such event that researchers suggest destroyed the city of Otley yam and force the people to abandon it completely the archaeological groups have found large piles of fish bones to support this idea before the destruction occurred and the site was buried under tons of sand it was undoubtedly one of the largest cities in the ancient world the area was approximately forty thousand metres square and researchers revealed that it was built approximately 9,000 or more years ago the people who lived there around 7000 BCE would have lived and worked in a variety of ways unlike later structured cities with roads and organized layouts at Li Tian was mapped out more like a clustered village there were large houses with stone floors fireplaces wells courtyards and larger storage buildings human remains were found on the site including the bones of a woman and child who showed signs of tuberculosis which made them the earliest evidence of that disease the massive site with a wealth of buildings and other structures to investigate was discovered by a hood Galil in 1984 during an investigation for the Israeli prehistoric society taking place to find shipwrecks much of the Utley young buildings were uncovered when commercial sand quarrying was taking place while this did bring the interesting sunken city to light it also put the structures in danger from erosion the weather and human interaction most of Galil dives since 1984 have taken place in the winter after the summer storms are over he records anything that's newly exposed due to the natural currents shifting sand away from the structures Cleopatra's palace Alexandria Egypt on an island to the east of Alexandria the impressive Ptolemaic palace was constructed this island was called an tier Hodos and existed up to near the Year 400 as an important place for the royalty of Egypt as with many locations in this region earthquakes and subsequent tsunamis destroyed the land and forced the palace under the water this is actually one of the shallowest sunken cities or archaeological sites in the list it's only about 16 feet of water above the ruins an archeologist by the name of Frank Gaudio began the exploration of Alexandria Harbor in 1996 he and his team discovered that the island itself had been flattened by the people who lived there before the great city was created around 250 BCE it only covers around 1200 acres the people paved the entire thing and created three pathways stretching in different directions heading to important structures on the island the longest is approximately a thousand feet and led to the massive temple that faced the mainland this area also included what's described as Cleopatra's palace it was built in the 200s BCE was approximately 90 meters on its longest side and had marble floors throughout another of the three pathways led to a temple of isis with an impressive statue of a priest carrying an osiris vessel also found here were large stone sphinxes that honored Cleopatra's father in their visages the last pathway led down to the port which was undoubtedly used for bringing supplies to the island and as a potential trade stopover in this location the researchers found sixty columns made of red granite that were decorated extensively and arranged a forum a gate or passageway onto the island itself they also found a Roman ship some 30 metres long near the port with evidence of a purposeful hole in its side the sunken island also features the construction site that would have become the Timonium palace for mark-anthony various carvings statues inscriptions and images of pharaohs were scattered throughout the entire site as decorations or ceremonial objects historians believe that the entire island project was abandoned when Rome took over Egypt and not necessarily when it vanished due to the tsunami and earthquake activity [Music] [Music] you
