and campus dot ie this is OTB sports radio alright so you may have heard about it a small show that we recorded at the board gosh energy theater this week we were there in partnership with Cadbury and we were there also Roy Keane and we carry never all with legs Cadbury celebrating the third year's official snack partner to the Premier League all the money raised on the night from ticket sales from that show being donated to where Cadbury Ireland's charity partner and be sure to check out aware that I see all the great work that they're doing around mental health now of course across the night there was some strong language on the evening and some stronger opinions as well some of the people mentioned in the various stories and anecdotes that the two lads talked about obviously may remember events slightly differently so we're going to jump in right here Gary talking about Roy's arrival at Old Trafford my first experience that was just of watching because I wasn't in the first-team squad in obviously the first year that Roy was at the club and thinking about it might remember playing him right back again in a game in Chevy nice I think Old Trafford and thinking of you know his versatility at the time and his energy and his power and his strength and I'm Bryan Robson saying that he was you know this is one hell of a player and Bryan Robson didn't hand out compliments lightly but obviously she then sort of grew into the first team as a young player you got remember at the time there was Robson there there was in store Michael counts now Hughes Pallister Bruce I mean they were monsters every single one of them was a captain a character a personality and laureate that time probably was younger that mean was younger than those lads and and obviously was a huge personality in character but it evolved into what it became at that point I would say I think what happened was then obviously over a period of time over two or three years those life started to leave and and obviously Roy emerged into the personal individual that he was which was the most in most inspirational football player that I ever played with and the most demanding player that ever played with an axe is someone who mirrored the boss he mirrored the boss simple as that on the pitch he was so like him in the sense of not accepting of a dropping standard not accepting you know I always say about passwords let alone you know giving goals away or god forbid not applying yourself or showing a level of professionalism or effort in training or something like that so when it comes to the point of sort of the 3-4 years going up to stop 97 98 99 then going beyond that you're talking about the most formidable football player that you would ever see on the football pitch the person that everybody in the club wanted to see at the front of the line ban on and like I say we need I said early on today when he left the club that was a moment that no one in the Football Club in the team in the dress room wanted to happen you know this idea of you know obviously you know the perception in terms of what he is as a person in terms of you know I've done thinks about he said himself I was entranced in raving all the time he was popular incredibly hugely popular funny [Music] [Laughter] caring loving [Laughter] Oh will you hold it for me No so basically at this person that you essentially see reported on that you actually don't recognize because you know him in the change room is someone completely different and to be fair being with him today you know and the people who've been with him today from sort of you know from CAD bizarre from you know you see a complete you see the person actually you see you know and that we did a Q&A at lunch today and you see the individual that is but but actually we'll just just will not accept a drop in standard will not accept mediocrity in any way shape or form and that seems to be a problem for other people that he has high standards but it was never a problem for us in our dressing room our dressing room to be fair responded to it if other people don't respond to it is because they've never seen the standard that he's aspiring to get so and I always say in life that people think they work hard everyone thinks they work hard until you've seen someone work harder and then you think okay I'll go on aspire to that and then someone thinks I wait he works up and you work harder again and then you see someone else and that's what you've seen a standard then you never really know where you're at in life and that's the reality of life you just you just you can only really be what you've seen with we were very fortunate that Roy Keane as a captain Sir Alex Ferguson as a manager and surrounded by the likes of you know growing up Brian kid Nobby Stiles people who just set the most incredibly high standards and there was never a break in that and from our point of view as young lads course we would element a talent and we did well they were professional but we had people who basically guided those and mentored us to a level that we could see and think that's what we were trying to climb to all the time and I think that we might take on Roy in and his career United in sort of his influence upon the club in ourselves [Applause] the way you talk about ROI there and you've said before that he made you feel 10 feet tall when you're walking out onto a pitch have you ever had anyone else in the dressing room that was in any way comparable no cuz my captain's at United to be fair when I broke through Eric it was no I mean Eric was an icon an incredible player but I personally wouldn't respond to Eric in the way in which I would respond to Roy because Roy if Eric was it was different differently there he led by example he was a match winner very determined you know wanted to be the very best that he could had incredibly high standards but you know I to me I didn't personally I've responded to him but not in the way in which obviously I would do with Roy Britt Steve Bruce was a great captain again who are played and but again was different than Roy different qualities I would say I think to be fed the person who I would say in a different way and I gave him a really hard time cuz he played in front of me for two or three years was was was Cristiano Ronaldo but actually when he got to a level that he did in 2007 a and I was playing behind him at that time just before I got injured I thought it was it was almost magical that because a player who to be fair ignored who ignored essentially his position ignored instruction didn't defend the way in which she wants him to defend defied logic actually in terms of how United as a club was over a 15 20 year period where everyone defends everyone attacks there's no we don't carry anybody and we didn't carry him by any stretch the imagination but he wanted to play right wing but then decided that he wasn't enjoying it gone play left and I be like what he doing get back over here and essentially that was probably wrong you know I mean telling Krista it's relative it is he then went on to become something magical for two seasons so not in the same way I would say that to be fair Roy was the most influential player that I ever played with and there's no one that gets close to him but I suppose in different ways you could be inspired by Cristiano in an in a sense thing around that time when you're moving towards the travel nineties and on building towards the tribal year for you Roy was Ferguson hands on which your game was he you know the we see pet when Raheem Sterling comes off he's like on shooting baton that baton it's very detailed well what did Ferguson do if anything to teach you the game or improve your game or what was that relation slightly different did the modern manager no shall we said there are more hands-on I obviously played for great managers and Alex Ferguson and Brian Clough who was more about man management and managing the group there weren't really hands on in terms of the training sessions but the gnudi came inside house Amala I was enjoyed working with them and I'd the same with Matt and with Ireland it weren't initially hands-on coaches but the gnudi game and their messages were very straightforward and simple and Alex Ferguson I'm sure if he was sitting here would be the first to say we'd almost I think he criticized me a little bit when I left saying I was trying to run the dress on him but we did run the dress room you know we did not just me you don't have to be a captain to be leader but there was brilliant characters so we took care of all that we created I know I'm always a bit wary of using this board there was a great culture at Man United where he was like a machine sort of training sessions and I'm see Alex Ferguson was covered of his good coaches the Steve McLeod kid or obviously earlier so session or was good but the players would make these sessions you know it'll always be everyone would and it seemed strange people okay you go we would give it a hundred percent every session we done doesn't mean sidered did the quality was always there you'd have an off there but Alex Ferrari was step back and and almost let the players manage the session and let the coaches get on with it but then I also thought I look back at my time with Alex frogs and all the team talks he had is obviously knowledge of the game and I think it read the really brilliant managers almost ski they smell what needs to be said and address from obviously there's a famous one what I said in the book lads is Tottenham you know I did and that's that's probably house nobody on Tottenham but he would come in as a senior player and Gary would in a dress room and his team talked this video you can be brainwashed with all that stuff and and I always felt Alex Ferguson Brian Clough is the same I always felt the group of players it would just say the group just needed to hear at that particular time would it be before the game halftime at United generally speaking we always played four for two and I was kissing gonna go on our teams no it's the art time in Europe we might play a tree in the middle so all our instructions were very very straightforward I never felt confused at Alex Ferguson ironically the same with Brian Clough if before my debut at Liverpool Brian Clough in the dress room before the game and and I kinda have to remind myself of it he said to me before my debut sort of senior play and obviously had been playing with the reserves he says you can control it when I said yeah he said you can pass it I see how you can run a nice agenices will just do it I'm tree things and that was my career and people laugh but a lot of players can't do them things believe it or not profession players can't control it pass it on they might have one or two the tree so I knew I had so that was that was my career in a nutshell obviously when I went to unite after forest obviously the higher level you go P after you a quicker and faster couple of course but Alex Ferguson just they just kind of it was good at managing the group Gary mentioned Eric here for example he would he'd be clever with Eric you know he give Eric like for example it's only a flu thing but you obviously United with all of a smash Club suits and all this and probably respectful when we traveled and and Eric might turn up in a suit with a pair of trainers whereas if that was one of us you'd definitely be fine are you being troubled whereas our Eric leave him off his French you know he's you know yeah and then because he knew he'd manage Eric and ego em but then it'll probably we need a game on the Saturday to me that's management you know you have to just kinda give lads a bit of toffee here and there Gary mentioned Ronaldo you know there's stuff Ronaldo was doing in terms of not being kind of a team player in a sense but you forgive a follow for that stuff if he's winning in the game it follows outrun aback we should go mad at Eric sometimes in game did give it away we go Eric by buying one L winner Eric you I'll forgive you for the other stuff yeah and that's what good players and good characters do for them you know I wouldn't be I wouldn't be too critical of him Alex Ferguson have to say I'm not one for holding grudges you know that last sentence was disconnected to the rest of the speech we did want to talk a bit more about the travel and the years afterwards but well actually will do that will come to the end with Ferguson and where that is now and you know when you do your cruciate in 98 is that any kind of turning point for you it I got here to heard different things it was reading somewhere that year in that year it might have watched a few games and MUTV old games and saw yourself and been a bit unhappy and because you seem to come back leaner a real peak I learned a lot when I was offered a year but but the week in terms of when I done my crew she kind of summed up where I was really as a player I was missing my career was gone places and I was at United and things were going great I think we played a Liverpool and we played a Liverpool on the Wednesday night leaders of the Saturday you know I've got learning the game I think we're all students to the game and like I love watching games no I I'd watch any game so but anyway so the Wednesday night and we beat Liverpool one-nil and under Wednesday night Old Trafford all was the case my mentality was always after a game because I was quite an intense person after a game and and these were bad habits I was after getting into particularly when I played a league of early when I'm in a forest it was always a case of definitely offer a few pints after the game always you know win or lose or like hit the booze yeah I would I'd always go for a few pints that was my way of switching off all the people would do other stuff I go no I listen I'm going for a few points so when don't know ends they're nice and when you go out after a game it's going to be a late at night because by the time you start drinking it's 11 o'clock and if you want to get steamed up it's going to be three or four all right I'm sure and Sonia Wednesday and I remember left autel I was drinking the dispara near Old Trafford I'll try and fast forward the story ended up having an argument with a fella so the tour plane leads but plane leads and would that happen afternoon the drink no no no no once a week very rare Jesus we played leaves under Saturday more and remember we were losing and Holland had been irritating me for a number of years anyway and I don't suck them down I did I don't think I deserve to snap my knee and because we used the Serbs that to got back on and after again the physio day of fever it was a brilliant physio X Wigan Rugby League feature so he knew all about cruise shits and in the dressing room I knew I knew I was in trouble you know Jesus you know you didn't need to Serge and tell me and he says you're in a bad way with the knee I had an operation I remember having an operation and had to let the knee settle down and had a cruciate operation above five six weeks later and then you are at a crossroad you're 20 I don't think I would have been 28 and I'm going so had the operation and I remember speaking to two surgeons that United for some reason had two surgeons looking after me which is brilliant so they gave me the lecture at the hospital you know you're a crossroads with your career but if you do things properly you should be alright you know you still a number of years left in your career sports science change you've got a great physio and I'm not my head going you know I'm I'm kind of I love being fit anyone it's a setback but I'll deal with and I went I literally went out that nice for a few pints on crutches yet the surges are telling me you're at a crossroads I'm going yeah brilliant yeah I'll do it I'll do everything to come back or but I'm going out tonight and it sort of is El Amin's and then when you're all for the year and the old training Ronda cliff it's not like the modern gyms now there's no windows you just and you and it's a lonely place for your energy but I kind of enjoyed that determination to get back but you do analyze your game I wasn't necessarily going to watch United again but I would look at other teams I look at other midfielders and obviously made a promise myself and that's when I said I'd better cop meself on that when I come back I would and so unfortunately sometimes you need a bad injury and I'm sure there's people here who played sports you need a bad injury to appreciate the game a bit more even though I always felt I loved the game but maybe just maybe I was taking things for granted with my lifestyle and drinking after games and all this carry on so when I came back from the cruise [ __ ] I was quite but I came back quite lean and ready to kick that my career again but then on the other hand and I went to extremes you know I looked towards the end of my career even though I was totally 132 - body fat levels I was really gone looking I took diets to the extremes in a lot of sports people are extremists and I went I went then too far the other way I memory into a detox in Milan do you know the lads used to go that gigs iam some of the French slides went to a detox place in Milan for four days long as I I'll try that you know and they said for four days or five that you got a four or five digit but you don't get fed in four or five days or am I going surely they'll give you a piece and the evening or something and I went and they don't feed you for four or five days I remember coming back and my wife and I've tried all these diets fish no protein and cat and I just remember and I remember I was kind of cold all the time I kept getting dead legs and it only takes your mother to tell you my mother came over I again I was about thirty thirty why shouldn't you and I went you know kind of a fitness freak no I'm just eating salads all the time and listen when you play in the middle of the pack in Premiership games salads will not do you know socially you need a bit of red meat in a proper game so from being a bit of a fool and being a boy on out and about drink and I didn't went too far extreme under diets and eventually I caught myself on and and what I try and do now Christ if I can with the funa everything a moderate moderation okay it's a long answer that wasn't it really yeah but the cruise ship was a learning curve for me yeah yeah definitely [Applause] I think to be fair what Roy's just said mirrored actually the the Premier League because when we first came in when we came into the first team we would the lads would go out after game the whens didn't ago after game on a Saturday sometimes even some guy on a Sunday and as young lads we'd been educated in sort of like a new type of way this was this wasn't good for you this wasn't right the nutritionist was in then Trevor came in but you had this sort of like four or five players six players left in the team that had been part of what had been the sort of culture and you know he'd remember when I first came as it seemed Steve Bruce Bryan Robson paused it was normal to do this parlay and we were taught of part of like the Premier League and it just changed completely vanga came in nutritionist came in and what Roy just talked about there is actually the evolving nature between what was the sense of the seventies and eighties and the Premier League which became if you like a far more professional sport sciencebase years and but what happened was that everybody then your for your body fat went down to five six percent which is just ridiculous about seven and a half eight and I was 13 when I joined the club but then problem is it became a point of how low can you get how perfect can you become how professional can you become we thought we were already soft because we'd been at the boss had tried to change the culture generally even when he first came to the club you know he tried to move it a little bit he knew that it was changing but to be fair what Roy's career to be fair does he's actually split that he's lucky that he was able to change some players you know the particular ones that I played with of England we're not able to watch the goal from being a player that did that to play that then became if you like a modern player one that actually bought in and was open to sports science very interrupted was that a heart change like are you sitting there in a Wednesday go on it was a big guy I'm better off to talk about this than him yeah cuz I witnessed it I saw it you know I would I saw it in him in terms of everybody did in the change room this massive big this big moment of shift complete shift you're not that usually wasn't unprofessional before he was speedily doing what every other player was doing for talks five thirty years but then traps he just said no I'm gonna absolutely changes it's a massive shift that in your life and people who've made those sort of big changes and big shifts and it was 99 2001 it it was 99 2000 this happened and obviously these Fitness is Isis body fat but everyone else then responded to that because if the best player in the team and the most influential player is here again get into five six percent you can't be 12 he can't be nine you've got a train and that's that's essentially again the driving of standard and I think that was pushed right the way through and obviously sports science now has changed again but it was it was a it was a massive shift i dimly believe who won the league five times in six years from 95 through to 2001 obviously there's an element of talent but I think fitness was acts I think we were fit sir we were more professional he remember the Spice boys at the time you know Neil reduc Phil Bob Jason McAteer Fowler John scales you know all them lads they love to pine and Joseph in a pint a beer will cost you the league if you drink 10 a night three times a week and the facts and the fact the matter is if you've got a team that's drinking six seven pints three times a week or six seven points twice a week and you've got a team that are not drinking six seven pints twice a week forget Talent forget professionalism the difference is enormous in terms of how you feel you know you feel yourselves when you have a pint you wake up the more enough then you go to work and it's like hard work youth you do that twice a week but you actually going fresh and don't drink for a week and try and and you feel poor I feel and that's the relative is you eat better you look after yourself more and you'll be mentally stronger you'll be physically better and actually that can out that can be someone even 10% more talented than you you'll jump above them and i genuinely believe that's what happened at United for a period of four or five days that's why I asked dr. Ferrand under arson banger was strong and it can't be a coincidence that as that change of mindsets happening you gon win the treble and we could talk about that for an hour and the memorable games during the run in is there one moment that sort of twenty years on that is still cherish at that time can you narrow it down what's that one season you mean negative role in I just think it was a combination lotta stuff there's never a lot of fans seem to remember short on games are semi fine are two final but sometimes we I'd always go back and even to a league campaign there might be a victory you might have had in Maris often and you just knew at the time this was a vital victory of course again people to remember maybe towards the finishing line but there's no games really standout for me where I go yeah that was a turning point I think it was a combination of many years of hard work you go back to 99 for example but what you need in sport as well and I think we're the first to admit is well we consider ball Knighton's a talent lads walk tired but you need a bit of luck in this game plenty of breaks and that's even if remember even ten two people get even the first leg in his semi-final Juventus should have won the game in Old Trafford you remember probably bad memories better than mine but they're to a tree great chance that the game should been dead and buried but what you have to do at the top level sport as well and unite again your memory complete tricks and years if United we were brilliant every week in winning games comfortably no we weren't but what we do would stay in games I would keep going to the end again go back to it no coincidence a lot of lay calls etc and that's honestly but a look you need a bit of luck along the way have um have you allowed yourself to concede that having played twelve or thirteen games in the chance be that you were a massive part than winning the European Cup part is it is there an Asterix in your head I suppose deep down I probably don't feel like I have worn it now but that's yeah but I don't they I don't necessarily want one or two games to try and define my career reader and again I remember thinking at the time well hopefully I you know the danger in sports where you go we'll just you know hopefully get back next year or the year after and then you find out your careers or me go I didn't get back to another final it sort of semi finals I think it was Leverkusen games you think probably should have won so when you do get these moments you have to try and enjoy them but when I see other players I know the format's change I think again for that sees in the Champions League games I think it was totally in a fourteen he told and obviously updating everyone bare the final do I feel like I deserve the medal not strange enough probably not but that's that's no big deal last that was the game were in the way I played I was played on the edge I was always going to pick up a few yellow cards I was always gonna pick up injuries I'm gonna get sent off the odd time that was there kind of that was why I played so I can't be picking and choosing and going well I had a decent career you had a decent career because I had to play that way if I remember sometimes the B games particularly preseason our yeah just say for example preseason or maybe friendly games unless I was really kind of really Addis I was such a bad player I I kind of had to be added a hundred percent that intensity what gave me the career so I can't then on one hand go on you know if I ended up missing a final but I wouldn't have had the career without that so I can't you can't have your cake and eat it you know it was going to be sacrifices along the way and that was going to be me missing games I was he saying for schools he scored you off obviously was forced enough to get back a few years later willing to beat Chelsea but I I it doesn't keep me awake at night I don't go to bed and I go on I wish I wish I didn't get a yellow card in this game people always remember yellow card I got two semi fine but I'd obviously got a yellow card against Inter Milan de quarterfinal and I knew I knew once I got the yellow card in the quarter-final I thought I'll do well to get through the next few games right so yeah but that's that's like no [Applause] yes sorry sorry the type of team that we had them in sculls Ian I'm Rory mr. final but I also think that the type of people that if they not played in the previous twelve and only played one game in the final they would also say that they didn't deserve it but the type that though they're the type of people those two were yeah they wouldn't take credit for you know they don't feel like they should win it because they play in the final but if they played no games up till the final and just played in the final they probably think that they didn't deserve it as well and that's the sort of sorry to interrupt just while you're talking in that pictures up can you remember are you just thinking there I'll just smile wry smile yeah it's weird I think we'd come back into the dressing room I think we'd been back in I think mean schools had gone in and the players were coming in and some of the staff saying oh you've got to go out now listen you're like you know like whatever you say obviously you're kind of putting on an act they're keeping out for lunch that day they weren't yeah no I don't think so yeah no I don't know we had but what we had to interference with a good craic if you did the benefit have been suspended mean scores you were out every night again there was definitely because after the game I think we obviously stayed up all night as you would drink in any in salads and we so Pat I think means cause you were definitely the worst in the morning but I think there was an element of drowning our sorrows as well but we had a couple of night selves in Barcelona when because I was rooming with Denis Irwin and I don't think Denis was too pleased with me because I was I was kind of coming in early in the mornin and I don't think I was jumping on in my mess and wrong but he he could hear me coming in and he's getting ready for a match so I was bit on professional for them few days I always I always remember skull I was with miss Cole's coming over to me in the pre-matching shaking my hand and thinking do you know do you know the emoji II don't know about emojis so there is footage after the semi-final infrared when everybody goes back into the dressing room and Dwight Yorke is dancing around in celebration and you're on one side of the dressing room pulse Gold's is on the other side and you just can't be with us and yeah do you know what even if we even if I was suspended I don't think I would have been jumping around like York yeah anywhere people think even we once we once certain big games I don't think I was there everyone for like going overboard especially sent me fine cause you remember you something well we self to win the final I listen I would have been happy of course but I wouldn't have been jumping on to place anywhere even if I wasn't suspended and also path to the opposite I think was probably the same for scores as well and United you're also missing out in a pretty big bonus you know for firing set up you get that heart I got a back in my next contract in the negotiation yeah but I think I remember I know the rules have changed I think if the pairs are suspended no they can play in all this and and I think that's probably right because I I think it's hard after twelve games the player can be suspended for the final you know it's tough on players but that's life or things happening it's funny every time you say final now I just seeing right in my head screen and final final final who bean rice we won't go into it the World Cup last year I'll tell you gonna mention John Terry and you know what to be very you're those in few years went after the treble this brilliant team not an old team you know you guys are early twenties you're you're peak and you're winning the championships pretty easy domestically and then you mentioned the Leverkusen game there's solid sorry you said you went in the championship easily yeah alright yeah you don't you don't win championship easily don't hate yourself man I'd accept that just get the facts right yeah yeah yeah as the Liverpool fans am yeah no fair point you're with you're winning them well by a good margin yeah tough yeah I was talking you mentioned the Leverkusen game there was the Madrid game yeah there was a Bayern Munich the Porto won miranium like this is the wrong way of putting it so go easy on the air with this word did that team underachieve not to win a second European Cup or what happened or did the game move on and for four to two encoded or what's your sense of what happened that team no it was definitely I definitely felt at the time the group of players we had I think if I'd won the Champions League even once but you know I don't think that would have satisfied me we always felt especially some of the games we I think we let go Cup semi-finals oh you've just mentioned I think the Levesque using game certainly and obviously the marine or the Porto on I think I was quite a final but that's top level sport no it's crew yeah so you again you've you're on a boat easy you have to go and earn the right to win it and you need a bit of luck you know you look at the port or game I think I can my memories not Korea but we definitely want scores here the gold didn't he disallowed which was I think was some dodgy linesman a new officers no Vieira and these are Mormon season to finding moments in a game where you get over the line with - but but sorry you didn't detect any sense of we've won the travel well hey you know in any parts of the dressing room like no chance no chance no doubt would not and then I go back to it earlier boat do is certainly a I never in my time at you man United I ever was an address room where to be preseason after we'd want something our listen with big disappointments or I felt as a group of players we felt you know you know this is great where the man we just have to turn up and it doesn't happen that way I never felt that United well Gary might be different but I never felt I just always felt that there was a bloody desire there there was a hunger yeah came no from the manager and the staff the demands of the supporters I even remember I went united people talk about pressure people always use network pressure pressure is great she's brilliant imagine player for the team there was no pressure yeah you guys United 70 our toes and every week home and away the fans travel no matter the demands they put in yet I still love that I always worry about I always worry when people don't demands injure or don't put pressure on yeah yeah Jesus something drastically wrong there but we were never blase about our success we never thought next year will be easy you you know sometimes you might you might just win a leak and you go is it that enough should be we're in a more Chapman today you know FA Cup double sure who should be winning more doubles and all this stuff gone it's tough combine in these titles and which would you be having those conversations in the dressing room when you come back in for pre-season when you didn't have to success in Europe I think you just smell it the air going out lads we've got a kick on again and well if what we did windy our trophy you'd move on pretty quickly let's go with that we've had great nights and the drink brilliant cause you've just you have to switch off as well you have to celebrate the Heisey sport but you actually don't get that money but also you have to move on quickly well I see in here players celebrating a bit of success to had ten years ago even though when people said to I don't what guys that when said to me go is a good career know I kind of cringe conscious move on Jesus crisis number of years ago and when you're when you're playing for Man United I better go are you want a few trophies well yeah what you expect we won't prefer your Ville manganite ever we're gonna win trophies were pretty good players you're a good manager great support great characters Jesus walk it oh we're gonna be in the mix so simple edie did you did you get any sense that there was any kind of hint of resting on laurels or anything post travel no I mean the club work I suppose in some ways we lost Peter Schmeichel yeah and it was a huge influence on our on our team in terms of his presence character his ability we didn't as a as a club we didn't we weren't quite a gret we weren't aggressive in the transfer market after the treble for probably two or three years which probably because of ultimately culminated in the fact that we are the Fantastic squad but then obviously from a point of view I think we miss P I did think we missed sort of PT no you yeah it became that period which was probably there we were in the league for two years but then after that we had a difficult few years and it culminated it not I'm a can't blame the goalkeepers but just essentially such an intentional position and then when Edwin came back in it seemed to sort of change again a little bit because obviously was a big player but no I I mean Roy makes everything sound very simple because I think to Fay you can you can simplify life into you know when people say what is achievement achievement is to be forgiving your all every single day and never giving in and if you think like that every single day I think that was just an essential thing it was never sort of like you know there was never in quests or the all these big you know Churchillian speeches at the start of the year where you'd say yeah everyone's got to do it again this year it was just it was just a matter of course that's what happened you just came back in and you trained and you'd basically worked as hard as you possibly could and you never gave in and the standard to be fair you know you were obviously were there for a reason in the first place that you had a level of talent that the manager believed in so you trust him on that side and then the other bit was down to the players in terms of their ability and so that their willingness to want to do it again and there's no doubt the manager would have obviously jumped upon it if he sense that your player didn't meet the quality standard or didn't meet the effort all this of if you like the the determination part I think it was quite simple you can't complicate life me every single one of us in here as a choice every single day where they want to get in the morning do our very best and never given that is it that if you can say at the end of your sort of working day each day you've done that then what more can you do and I think that's what happened at United and where Roy tries to out obviously you know was explain that about standards and the work ethic every single player was like that every single player there wasn't anybody that dropped below that standard always because the standard had been set by the senior players and by the manager yeah Roy your final year is obviously abruptly ended it seems reading various things you've written or interviews about us like during the chemistry was after were rumblings from a few months said even preseason in Portugal argument over whether you want to stay in there and the other way you feel more comfortable family and Carlos Queiroz and then you break your foot and you come back and Kiros isn't overly welcoming you feel when you come back chokes you Bayview you stand up front you be up front and do what's your do you feel did you end yeah sure your reaction what did you get a bad feelin like did you feel something's really off here and it's gonna end yeah it was again you're talking about going back preseason I remember the first time at United they said member the families come and join us imported preseason I want a great lover of that stuff you know I always think you're training your professional get the families away you know this have boundaries even with your own family but I won't bore you up but yeah careless was a strange one careless even when I came back and this was before when I broke my foot at Liverpool I taught my hamstring and preseason I remember speaking I was due to come back and it kept usually when you when you're injured in your first team player you go back you train with the reserves for a week a test course and you get your fitness levels up but he's keeping me you said no you're not ready to join back in and I don't know if carry your memories I remember eventually I did come back in and back in training with the first team but it was still early in the season what you'd stand there on the trainer pitching we go you ever gonna have a v8 or nineteen oh here's your teams and I remember I'll never forget it and I remember careless and kind of called out the teams and I stood there and I was stood down again I'm seeing your player too close I thought I did a decent career United I was into my last year on my contract and I probably thought this is probably my last year anyway I I never felt it will award me anything I had no hang-ups and hey that's tough no problem listen I had a good go off it and there was incidence in it I knew I saw careless and I've stood don't remember I was remember I don't have Gary remembers it and he picked up a bib and he just rude and he says you just stand up front oh my god okay he's added to the list and but because it was under training all right listen I don't know again the people think I didn't kick off and I remember the players after it's gone Jesus you you you were can but our last services yeah and then lay around when I broke my foot and then and strangely enough we go back to this famous video I was supposed to done I'm gonna blame Gary little bit for this because I think Gary was forced to do the game but I was back I would my broken foot and the manager said to me if you want to go off on holiday and I ended up in Dubai and the United game against middled was under television in the hotel I am watching tonight this I swap Gary be doing a game and I definitely remember and I swap with Gary I says well I do that game because I'm not here each pair Turk returned every week of analyzing the game you just played and MUTV under the United umbrella so I came back and I to do the milligram what I think was for one or for two I think a Middlesbrough one a for one or two or something so I'm watching the game I should do it for MUTV to happen you analyze you're gonna die you could have done better or not I had to think it was anything too dramatic what's the word what's the genuinely what would you feel might have been the worst thing you said or the thing that would have crossed the line publicly I get rid of all of them know I know I am no I the first part I'm forced to be critical of me said but afterwards when the next few days were really took off whereas the video has been destroyed and I'm going cuz I remember thinking that going and then I said don't be said what did I see on the video and then it united spin and I think cuz I was interred in my last year careless definitely had issues with me what he thought I was too strong and addressed him I don't know and it was definitely a detention it was no getting away from it you know my time of United sautés it was tension only my career remember I fell out with Alex Ferguson about and it I I think he's gonna he said I'm gonna lead him for me or something at the time and robbers at Middlesbrough and and in his office and proper he did you know but I was kind of really important asset to man united then I was notoriety for I was trying to see it from their point of view he's 34 he's he's the captain it may be losing his way a little bit my influence on the team even dog my last my last game was at Anfield with Drew Neilon but I was have to hold my own I don't think my career was I was in freefall I was doing a job in the middle of the park sitting there which I think I could have done with my eyes closed anywhere because my experience so then this video thing started really getting nasty in the media were saying I said I'm never going this is press this gone to this kind of video thing and eventually with wood Ferguson and then before we know we're having a heated argument in front of all the players my only consolation before I left my United and as I said I'm forced to see if I've kind of stepped over the line for producer man United for the video I got a letter about a weekly United tried to find me 5,000 pound from my video 5,000 trust me I've been finding a lot more Man United for sending offs so 5,000 a pair gets five you define 5,000 have been lazy that was a kind of small fine and I remember I appeal this I sell my pen to five thousand I did uh I've been fine before I've been fine little hundred two thousand pounds of it yeah I'll take it I got sent over I should never pale anything I think of it I appeal the fine I'm sure I think Ferguson when all you're kind of challenging me no but I was I wasn't paying no fine because I thought the video was fine and the key for me again kind of kind of skipping a few bits and pieces here I ended up watching the video with the players and the staff and remember we were all walking up to watch the video listen Kerry might say something different I don't remember welcome to the video with the players I went we need to watch this because lads this is not true what I've supposed to spoke about players wage is no interest in other people's wages that was none of my business yeah but all but I think United was given that stuff oh I think the United machine was like come on you know especially with the World Cup after Saipan people saying yeah let's just paint a picture people need to look at the facts and we ended up and I went can we watch the video this video that was destroyed and we watched the video and I remember looking to go on I hope it's not as bad as I think yeah and when I watched it it was okay I didn't think for one minute I was out of order I didn't I was like thank God and then the manager put it to all the players we were in his office he went larva and if you got a problem I think Fletch said something or maybe you could have been a bit easy on sir but not in two major all your players are going now we know arrived we got beaten for one or two I had to do the video could have been Gary's it could have been me to follow me doing a game we'd won what was I supposed to say are the last played great we lost four 104 - sure did and then that's when and before you know it is by careless said something to me I told him where to go and then it again the madness of it all your honor but I'm an experienced player I was 34 at the time a week or two later of his game due to play a reserve game Alex for it would let me play in it he so get your solicitor up and I remember me my solicitor under I think was a Friday morning madam Adam had a hotel near the airport he come up from London and he said what's this meeting about I've been called up to see him and I said no I probably want to get rid of me he couldn't believe it and Michael was a clever guy good at negotiation you don't my contracts United I think you know I had a lot of respect from so we're going to see United me and Michael this is about nine o'clock the players office were playing on the train on the Friday we were playing I think Charlton around the Saturday I can't stop me if I'm wrong or with my finish I am so I go into an office it is your questions so I go to an office David kills every Alex Ferguson I work with Alex Forbes for 12 and a year they if he wanted to say right listen our days are numbered your contract understand where we share cancer at no problem I'll survive don't worry it's low I think we've come to the end of it and I remember looking I'm gone right now my solicitors icon he's gone White's Michael and he says yeah we've done a statement passed across the statement that we'd like to thank you for 11 a half years of service and I might just let you know I've been here 12 and a half you know this is true this is all paths to the game you know what to kinda and they're in under to him looked at each other David Gilliland Ferb's I'm gone oh I see yeah I can defrost year we wonder double you know all right and they said you and Michael will give you a Michael 5 minister service or whatever and I said well if I leave can I sign for somebody I'm Forbes menorcan that would be terminated and this is a Friday remember going right forget about payoffs and all that carry on and he left my solicitor it might get a Michael when what you write into this I went yeah let's get out of here yeah right this is enough and what I should have nob solution should've dummy homework should have found out if I could sign for a team because ultimately this was what I think and a member of still coming back from my broken 40 I wasn't up to speed I office later found out that weekend I couldn't go to a club into the January which caused problems because my fitness levels and that was the end of it and I remember going home and I was home and I'll half not in it's not as if I dragged off for the day and of course you and Michael stayed there he was doing the contract I remember Michael ringing the arm going on United apparently there's they've got cash flow problems in terms of any money an hour they can stick it you know listen you know man united cash flow problems do me a favor and and that was it but then all the other stuff that came over afterwards as if I'd done something really bad but I as much as I'm not one for him carrying grudges am no I am now wouldn't forgive Ferguson for that no and I can um the forces if he shot man God listen Mike Cohen January going to no problem and then obviously you leave Dundas the kind of a media spin-off I was like I'd post rant and rave and I'd upset everybody they did it all nonsense but listen I've been on that road before on that in the office certain Gary I bring you in one second so it was one it was it one other player said something I remember otherwise Edwin van der Sar said so Edwin had been in the door about two minutes anyway no even at the club in the memory we do interviews left right he said and a membre when devices lads I'm he got a problem fresh when you could have said that I said yeah maybe but they weren't yeah we get in no problem an Edwin had his hand up we were Riya I think you could have been an Edwin I think I told him to shut up I said heaven even at this club two minutes you've done more interviews you might in the last two months that I've done at twelve and a half years so he was the only one who got a little bit of stick in the meeting yeah to be fair and you in your book and then Gary please come in buddy Harry probably say the opposite well maybe yeah in your own in your own book though you know I got some questions yeah yeah well then come in straight after but your own book you would concede no the better than yours honestly I know I'm sure well can I just because you would say that you turn to now do you it's just a point to just make Cena more important than a point I'm gonna make so just be quiet for one second so at the beginning at the beginning of the season at the beginning this season I'd seen this happen with David Beckham over a period of sort of six to eight months at United that's the happen with you know usually a problem it may be other players I think with Roy in the manager at there was always a challenge that this was gonna come to this was a chance that this was gonna come to this because I said before they were absolute mirrors of one another unforgiving wouldn't back down on anything stubborn but not in a way which is negative but incredibly senior you know their view stuck to it had to be sure about it authoritative in pre-season we we went to Portugal and Roy was staying at a resort down the road we arrived the resort up the road literally half a mile away about a mile away the whole team was staying at its resort of the road not the one going there were your brother didn't stay at the resort but in this cause he didn't steal it isn't their families and they were gone back to their families in the evening no no no so the antia no so right so basically Roy was staying at a resort cooking to the Largo and the team was staying at a resort CoreValve Loeb when he came up and she fed I think your Villa was unsatisfactory yeah I was like I'd my wife and five children me yeah so you expect after you met him he basically went back down the road to stay in the complex so that was the first thing that happened in pre-season I was active training Leroy for about six weeks in the gym before this happened it was building up it was building up there things happening where you could see this moment was sort of coming and on the day of the the meetings that Roy mentions I mean that that the ice SWAT with him I was bought for doing that Middlesbrough MUTV thing and I swap with him because of I was injured he was injured and I don't know how it happened but we we swap basically we've been were both injured but we rode been away or something like that anyway the manager came down into the dressing room and the minute that he said you know you need to watch the vid everyone needs to watch the video and you said yeah come on let's go upstairs I thought that's it that's it and I just knew you I knew Roy I knew the manager he knew the manager I just thought that was it there was no way that he was gonna step back there was no way the manager was gonna step back there were things that were said in that room to be honest with you that I thought there was a moment where he spoke to Carlos and I think he said something to the manager that I remember I'm not no it's for you to say what you want to say I and I just think I thought no there's no way that that there's no way that this is going to carry on I was hoping it could I think it Roy makes a point earlier that's absolutely true I think because I think if Roy been 2728 at the level playing that he probably was at 27 28 I think he did say things when he was 27 28 that you could deem to be unacceptable but I think at 34 it was just coming to an end and I asked the question I know would you the manager of got rid of Roy Keane the player after that meeting I think you would know I think it would meet was young but I wouldn't let it get to that nope I think you can player coming to I think if that meeting was horrific by the way I mean it was not it was its meetin the meetin addressed another meeting that we watch the video it was horrific let's be clear here no I'm not it's not funny honestly I you know there was some lines in there that were not honestly it was horrific before talking about the video are to meet the video the meeting the watching of the video then the meeting after that which was basically Roy in the manager Carlos ed with the bit that it was horrific four lads in the dressing room in his book what he said but then he has it in his book what he said to cure I was in front so that for the lads in the dressing room who would obviously been in the club for 10-15 years to see this happen and it was horrific honestly I mean we spoke up New York gigs he was speak up I would speak up I didn't honestly you couldn't say anything you could not say anything it was he thought you knew that that word you knew that that was it you knew that that was it I didn't he didn't [Music] I genuinely believe I generally believe that Roy Keane the manager would have gotten rid of Roy Keane the player that day no I can't I think you along nothing you would I think you would I think you know but I think he would but actually from our point of view as players we didn't have a problem we we we did not have a problem because we're I for 12 years from our point of view I think he's interview after by me it maybe in 2002 where he went straight on to I thought ITV at the time I thought that was probably more harsh than maybe the the stuff that was said on the on the video on the day we remember you question about the manager didn't mind me doing stuff that's what I mean that's probably the I thought that was actually worse from a point of view have more public it was more so for me at I was sat there thinking this is horrific it's a bad meeting this it was a shocking day it was a shocking day honestly it was and I can only say that from a point of you every player in that dressing room what's out of that room that day thinking this base but something's gonna give it something's gonna give it been coming on it for a month it been coming for a month or six weeks or something else happen accountant what it was something else happened before that I think there's something else have I thought you just I'm sorry I've seen it with backs you know where that relationship starts out basis you know I've been in the stand that leads if you remember and you just see it happening you just think it would be easy to look at that as a sliding doors moment of swapping to do that Middlesbrough game but the way you're talking even if you hadn't gone at MU TV something would have happened around them with the writing as I would because I was obviously in the middle of this but even again I suppose my few hang officers go yeah there was all the attention I just said yet it was coming to a breaking point then you handle it differently would it be I'm sitting on with David Gill and they're past me statements about how long I've been at the club cash flow problems leaving of it you can sign for another club these are just lies that's a bit weenie said of course if I marry I marry this for the first time that bit I mean I had not heard that the we watch they were after the Friday after the after the so the Wednesday whatever it was it's Tuesday or Wednesday the the meeting happened with the with the video what happened after that I don't think he came he got come in for two days or did you come in I think I was yeah I was yeah yeah well so what I gone see your own Villa in Portugal that's it I tell you the strange thing about the villa or back to this no brothers involved in this I've been on holiday for a week this is vital I came up in careless because he's Portuguese it was his pal doing all the villas brought me to this Villa my daughter's here tonight she'll back me up she was one at the time was she we walked her out my wife is a very plastered woman believe it or not and we walked on his Villa careless was involved in it remember going just glass tables there was a plunge pool it was like three bedroom that I'm going just won't do the family just obviously I'm with five kids at the time good night I remember sent the careless but we've just and I rang the people we just left the villa for him when we appear now and I went is it available for not a week and ironically what I found out later on schools he was a seeing under resort he was staying down with his family no big deal I think Phil and a manager adventure got upset me but what he was doing was organized in lunches and I can't hear me my wife and my family were on every lunch and every meet we're all here the players would off to so this idea that I was off sighs yeah and do my own thing and I remember the manager came he he came out one or two days late that was it and careless obviously was saying I had a follower Roy and he staying at this Villa and Ferguson pulled me and again ended restroom and the players were evident blind and got nice my stupid like really to me gone and I felt like simple his other player staying outside but I didn't want to throw them under the bus at me and I never got what and really over-the-top stuff and I remember we were training the next day and a typical Ferguson we're all doing stretches he walks over if you remember this because the owner of the complex as well one of the owners was a Dutch guy folks do you remember yeah so for assault straight rod is stretchy first-timer I'm looking for some senior players walk past me obviously forget that I'm the captain I need some senior players you know carry Ryan and whoever it was you've got to go for Chinese tonight am i right was there Chinese I think it may have been yeah yeah [ __ ] Chinese I do both off the China without you right you could stick your Chinese herbs all I kind of it's the all Forex is fault I [Applause] and I like it Chinese as well I thought I always remember saying in all these things that were wrong with his villa and then like this delays it and the pools [ __ ] freezing fine children would you say dare you just told me you've been skiing five times in the last year ready get the money for that like Jesus ordered so that was a standard yeah no sure the clocks against us are just one literally one last question on it really you know when you're in the office and you just watch the video and there's stuff you're referencing Roy talks about it in his book what he said to hear us I won't repeat here you know you're a bit of a go at Ferguson does any party it when you're in that zone we're still coming out Pinkie Pie um cross the line area I know I know you gotta you gotta relax yourself here a second just same upside pant people say Oh could you hand it differently yeah could you stood back well let people walk all over ya there's the key issue when I watch this video whatever boat is set afterwards listen I'm sure you're going to later same with Saipan people people making accusations against you you're sitting there going what you want to say it going know that yeah that's fine you keep you're gonna fight you have to fight your Khan I have to defend yourself I'm well again the key for me is whatever the video on garrison it was intense we'd have lot of heated discussions over there sometimes as a team but you gotta roll with that that's grown men were fighting for the same things there is gonna be a bit of energy Banerjee I'm sure there's people here walking industries where things get heated I didn't leave the office that didn't think and that's the end of my career at Manchester I didn't think so okay listen I didn't think it was all great you know let's go over a bite to eat tonight I'm thinking this is all and sometimes I think we have these debates are your heated arguments I think it's good I think it's good because you're all looking for the same things you're all hungry you want the same thing no problem but if you think I'm gonna sit there I don't I don't care for SELEX Ferguson on a pope and the South said yeah yeah I'm gonna fight my corner what you want me to do but then because I tell you if I Saturn said now I gotta do the players to be going and he what's up with him just like a few months earlier when Carol's cares true the bib at me when you just stand up front okay I detect angle alright listen sometimes the coaches are upset with something I listen I roll with it yeah we're going to treat you at such disrespect and then put statements in front of you and say all right thanks for 11 half you folks nod you was pulled me a couple days they're gone listen I your days are numbered we get to January but let's get to the end of the season and I tell you what IV let the club when Bryan Robson left I've got the club with Steve Bruce left - brilliant shirts from an United and I didn't like the way they were treated at the end so people talk about fergus's man management don't be cheated on by all of it either don't be killed on by all there and folks came out afterwards going well I always do mob as best for United Manchester I did nonsense his son played for the club on the league metal Darren very lucky his [Applause] his blood of his chief skull for Man United for a long time hey Lisa praise his wife wasn't involved under to stab somewhere Darren his son was at Preston one time down losses job couple of young players I'm not the man you know I guess Madam's the next they're pulled out of Preston that was doing the best for Man United do me a favor [Applause] when impressive on Jay this morning I was so calm when did you last speak to Ferguson not since then obviously not all in conversation I think when he apologizes to me I probably will say hello to him yeah no I'm no interesting speaking to the man nothing even over the past year the ill-health made you think maybe I just give him a call maybe life's too short when he apologizes to me and David Gill we're gonna get ready and go again how you doing Nathan I'm all right now good halftime break I think I got through half of the first page of things that we're gonna talk about tonight and we are gonna give away a prize at the end of this section Cadbury even very generous yeah you'll get to go to the Premier League game your choice and flights as well and that will come up in what 45 minutes time give or take yeah we are here tonight with thanks to Cadbury subverting their third years of facial snack partner to the perimeter and as we mentioned before it's a big night for us because all the money raised here is going to aware who are Kabri are those charity partners so check out aware doggy is gonna raise a huge amount of money so again if we don't get a chance later on thank you all so much for coming out hopefully you're enjoying it and yeah let's get started with the second death they've been brilliant guests so far Roy Keane Gary Neville everyone [Applause] let's trim straight in are you enjoying poetry is it something that you suspect you're going to do for a long time Gary I don't think I'll do it for a long time I think that I feel like it's seven years now I think unless you evolve essentially you just lose touch with a game a little bit and you just feel like you said the same things over and over again and I do quite a lot of it I'm on sort of like 4050 times a year I think commentaries okay in the sense that every game is different but in terms of incidents that you see on the pitch that you discuss in the studio there's always to show me certain types of instance that you can see there's only certain types of you know your position on each thing each season is the same so if you've got a position on diving or if you've got a position on VAR it's the same season in season now it doesn't essentially change and I feel like I'm getting to that moment now within the next two or three years I'll have to evolve or essentially just you know do something different I just fit I feel like that you know I did Monday Night Football four or five years now I now I don't do it every week through my own choice I just said you know I've done enough you know I think you know now Kara does it so I think I was conscious that you know staying too long doing something I think that for me I feel like at the moment like I need to change in terms of what I do right basically that's the fascinating thing that you say lose touch with the game like you you do don't lose touch with what you're seeing but just sometimes what's happening the changing room you know obviously you know Roy was in the change room last season I have not been in a changing room now for three seasons if you're not in a changing room you do lose touch with the change when we do lose touch with the coaching and I just feel I'm more now qualified maybe to speak about other things in football I am about actually sometimes on the pitch I feel like in terms of I'm not developing my tactical knowledge I'm understanding the game my knowledge is my knowledge and it's not improving maybe I'm understanding a lot more about dealing with agents are dealing with slub issues and sort of finances and stuff like that because of salford so I'm improving in some areas but I just feel if I'm commenting on football games and I'll have to change and evolve in the next few years I won't go back into a changing room obviously who do you like watching as upon - you can say Gary tolerate Gary obviously yeah too many of them yeah Gary's not bad cream soon as I think is decent no I know I listen and and that's it literally but you've obviously spoken about poetry before that maybe you felt you were better than it that you had more to give to the game yeah I did you know what people would look at it that there's a contradiction then when you rock up and sky yeah I am a contradiction so it's no problem no yeah I gravy carried yet but I am I kind of do the TV song sometimes because I don't want to do it if that makes sense sometimes you have to go and get out of the comfort zone I could be sitting at home again I missed the dressing room I loved the dressing room will have been involved what about whatever about the game with your job love dollar that was brilliant to floor the job when the games came around walking with brilliant players like Seamus Coleman etc so when I do the TV it's just a case of again doing something different different experience of away from from football but when people talk about my poetry I think I've done two games in the last year for daunting for one second I've been doing loads of games I live in the studio I think I've enjoyed obviously been involved in football not in a farce the last few months but every now and again I will particularly not working will dip into the TV because you have to keep yourself busy um would it be with the sky oh right and I also like watching the games of footballs no when I was with obviously Walker madman and what Ireland a lot of my lot of my trips and journeys to watch players was in the championship no listen that can get on your nerves as well champions championship is not great so I when I get a chance to do the TV for example if I do United game are Liverpool I like watching good teams so it does a selfish side of it let's go and do a bit of TV walk and what you d think in what's the problem with that pretty straightforward yeah so why not do more of it because you're clearly God probably know I probably build over the next few months cuz I'm not working obviously I've got bills to pay so yeah the a gun every week no I I also I don't want to do too much of it I'd hate to be kind of labeled kind of TV pundit particularly when I'm looking to get back into management but if companies get in touch here I've obviously I've I've kind of always enjoyed working for ITV so I've kind of got a kind of bit of a loyalty towards them when they asked me and obviously then Sequoia is good to watch Premiership matches particularly tonight as I said Chelsea live at Man City or again a selfish point of view it's nice to watch decent matches so I definitely will do more games over the next few months but in I've seen about my mind obviously I still want to try and get back into becoming a manager I think I'm putting the tree either I know here what Roy's saying into a fairy agree with him because you always feel like you're on the outside of the game essentially that the managers and the coaches are always so the management the players are always the most important people but when you think about being a pundit and you think about the fact that to be a pundit on premier league games in England there's about seven pundits 2 or 3 on bt 3 or 4 on Sky out of all the X players that have finished in the last 34 years that could be it there's only six or seven actually going to be regularly on Premier League games so in the sense that you know Roy obviously could do Premier League games you could do international games because he's compelling on television you know I'm at Sky I'm in there for seven years we can dismiss the sort of eyes just pundit rip because the facts that matter is we play United for a long time we think that was the most important thing and obviously being a manager's the more important all the rest of it but everybody would want to do what way do you know that everyone would want to do what we're doing after finishing a you know a football career which is going on television there's only six seven people how a thousands and thousands of players do Premier League football matches in in England so you have to be pretty good [Applause] honestly that sounds crazy the idea that you can actually articulate a message to millions of fans make them understand what you know you've seen in a way which is you know good to them and they enjoy it it's not easy I've seen really good coaches really good managers brilliant managers and players everyone oh it's easy to be a pond it that's the brilliant managers and players coaches do interviews come and do pond a tree and they're not very good to sit yeah so I think we can sort of say that putting the trees easier I don't think it is that he's a bee it maybe comes easy to walk because we're comfortable we were at United we're eight we you're Roy talks about that Middlesbrough game just before we went off essentially if we lost the match it on MUTV of that time it would be me or Roy essentially maybe one other that would do the game that we're lost in he'd be put up as the senior player because we were capable of bass they're dealing with it you know that type of defeat or if an interview after a game where we lost a match it wasn't you know you wouldn't put other players up so we were doing that fee night it so I'd say ponder she just come in some ways more simple same with England England lost the game in the tournament I would always speak because I felt comfort about no problem with it so I think that it's not easy to be a pundit I think you know you're there's not a lot people do it and a lot of people who do fair don't do it very well yeah I don't think I said it was easy what my point was that no I think it is hound I think it is hound and that's why you get out of your own comfort zone and God listen if it makes you a little bit nervous then I think that's a good thing as well try and do something a bit different to what you normally do there's nothing wrong with her I think Josie's doing it at the moment hey jolzi since he left he knighted has travelled to watch different types of football I think he's gone in the television studio esky cuz i think he remembered towards the end at sky josie became quite critical of pundits got quite involved with them he was almost like he was you know war with pundits i think he basically you know he said something just before the first show they did a few weeks ago that he felt like he wanted to come in and understand from sort of that other side because I was a manager for a very short period of time and it can it can get your paranoid that when you people say things about you believe it's personal you think they're after you you think that you've everyone hates you think that there's people basically enjoying you suffering I never really you know there was never a never a point where you sat in a studio where you critical of somebody you think I'm really enjoying criticizing doesn't really I mean there might be some people have that character about them but I genuinely never feel like that are you done with management in your head now dun dun I chose for the ER I never should have said yes to the job I wasn't qualified to do the job I didn't wake up every single day and think about coaching from the minute that I finished playing football I'd far too much stuff I was doing the sky stuff I was writing an article for a newspaper I was doing all the stuff in Manchester that I was doing with you know Salford and other things your managers have got to be a hundred bit about commit we talked about commitment before you know as a player why it's absolutely so it's more important as a coach that you committed that you think about it that you sort of you know immersed in what you're doing every single day and I wasn't much other than the time that I went to work with England which was essentially sort of nearly ten days every month I wasn't thinking about coaching I was on the training field every day doing sessions I wasn't in the club every single day doing things I had no right to be a successful coach it's actually to be fair in some ways it won obviously because of Peter on in Valencia and he invested in the projects in Manchester and Salford I felt partly that I did it because you know he asked me to do it and as part of an elite and not allegiance but like a loyalty that I said okay I'll do it apparently a little bit of but my contract with England was coming from to the end five ones partly max guy contract was coming to the convert to the end after five months partly a bit of selfishness in terms of all let's give it a go type thing of five on so what can I lose I don't feel I lost anything even though people would level it and your people would throw at me all the time but I made massive mistakes it was simple mistakes you know not getting rid of players that weren't committed that wanted to lead the club yeah I was a forty odd 40 year old English person who didn't speak the language didn't understand the league didn't understand the didn't understand Valencia all the rest of the things and and surrounded myself by three coaches who again were young and didn't understand those things three of us didn't about the four didn't speak Spanish it's just nonsense decisions to be first so I made massive mistakes and I'd sat there on television to be fair judging you know players and systems and all the rest of it for two or three years but got to the point where I actually lost my confidence for about the last we'll say six weeks of the job to the point where I was like a spinning top didn't honestly which speech player should I pick which systems I played you know all over the place and I have to say from that point of view it was through the bad decisions that are made but I shouldn't should have said no to the job I should never have taken the job and I found everything in my life everything you know what I'm doing this year what I'm gonna think and do in the next three years what moving for tea tomorrow night and the instinctive decisions that I've made on in a nightclub on the restaurant in Manchester taking the Valencia job they've all failed three or four everything every time I've made an instinctive decision that's not got thought that's not got thought there's a little bit sort of ego driven that of course I can do it fail any so let it's a lesson it's a massive lesson those things have happened to me in the last two or three years but I'm fine for it in terms of you know it's a good thing I feel like it's a good thing for me now because so the idea of will I go back into management now how why would a there are thousands and hundreds and thousands of coaches were thinking about their job every single minute of every day and Gary Neville does Rock sorts of artists yeah I'll be a coach no yeah [Applause] management is obviously a brutal business Roy and Gary's proof positive of that and like what you've been true your management career from the unbelievable success the first year in Sunderland these things never end well we think of that moment with Ireland in Lille and nothing can ever get better and still it doesn't end well do you ever think the way Kerry Kerry's thinking it's just not worth the hassle I review some sort of are you addicted to management oh I wouldn't say I'm addicted to management but I definitely want to have another crack off it you know from whatever the time it is wondering which brilliant hips which obviously there's some positives there obviously left on a disappointment loved to stuff for Ireland enjoyed a few months for forests even with mountain but I definitely wanna have another go off it and but I also live in the real world you know I don't think Real Madrid will be calling me you know I I think I've got a way all that up and unless it's the right opportunity in the meantime I'll just back away from it and see what comes up for them yeah hopefully with something come up because there's something well it's again it's in my makeup at this moment in time that I definitely want to know the crack off it and see where it takes us you haven't really spoken I don't think about the end with Ireland since it finished how did you find out yourself Martin O'Neill this yeah you know these things on the last game over the weekend when we were aware this new hair stuff you kind of I also you kind of smell stuff you just sense something's coming but again I've all this idea of losing your job and this sack and finish all that stuff doesn't frighten me that that's partly the industry we're in like anytime I've even lost my job or I've left a job I've never been that upset I just thought well you know this is something you might be a bit angry upset by it if you think you've been badly treated man I myself with the Irish job I loved every minute of it and again instead of kind of going I think we probably deserve well I do think we deserved another crack off it but we had some brilliant years and strange enough people still said to me sorry kind of didn't work out what Ireland and I go it did I thought was brilliant I taught it with two proper campaigns we call fight okay we got to a playoff and your team I think of every Irish manager done not Irish football we need a decent place towards the end when you're losing one or two players and whatever about myself I definitely did not my man was harshly treated - no there's no doubt about that but obviously when there's a lot of negativity a lot of spin out there and and also I knew when when when our kind of our wages were eventually when Dennis O'Bryan stopped paid our wages I said the man that I Myron as soon as we hit any sorta sticky pad snow will be definitely gone and when we were missing the players we were trust me and I've watched Irish football since of his kid Ireland they're gonna hit the sticky patches because it does really lack of quality at the moment never mind if you're missing Seamus or Robbie Brady one or two important players you think and we are up against it so won't be that sticky patch your hope and that people will stick to it yeah but nine times out of ten people would panic and they will make a decision that you might think is unfair but that again I kind of keep repeating myself but that's life that's the industry we're in but the stuff we had were darlin and I still miss the Irish job I loved it I loved the buzz of the games I thought the players I love walking a mountain and I think man brilliant manager of a really good guy [Music] went some great days he's just I've been very fortunate in my career but the one or two games you mentioned there were up there with a lot of the highlights in my career especially when is your country it was brilliant the trips we had does that surprise you because I think I've heard you saying before that it's all about playing that the joy is in the playing that actually having the nice of Robbie Brady's golden Lille can actually mark a bride to make a decision even when I came back and obviously Matt and obviously after my kind of dealings with Ireland so when I get me I kind of was a bit of a conscious decision in my head to go and listen try and enjoy these the good days a bit more because when I was a player shortly and you are in the zone and your focus and just pressure in Europe listen it is hard it is hard to kind of kind of let yourself gone because of my make my personality I was I kinda have to keep a front door pioneer because I was this kind of machine or whatever you want to call it so when we were at the Ireland and we had the good days Jesus lady Bosnia these games Germany America over to staff Jesus very lucky I I don't look back at any sort of regretting or again I honestly think we should being kept on to another campaign but again I think with the wages situation we now see with the FBI I knew we'd be under the cosh when the FBI were carrying again I don't know mountains contract but I know I was on a good deal any sorta chance to say no I was rightly so I am you're under the cosh and towards the end with the games we were struggling with we couldn't score the gold we're not daft you know I had a lot of my friends obviously into soccer and they would say to us I was tough last night was in you didn't play well you go I know I was watching it you know I know I'm watching the same games as the fans you're not what I thinking you're not seeing but it I think what a little irritated me towards you my people saying I still thought the players were given everything I didn't feel for 1 min ago and I think we've lost a group we were losing players were injured and because this was a new campaign and we were trying young players and people should have had the same attitude at us we all want to win football matches Borel and at the time we said we just have to take our medicine we just have to get to the next few months until the proper World Cup campaign staff because basically signed our contracts to see on for that yeah but we were there for that weekend and listen you here thing and I think man was harshly treated of course I think that but we'll survive what more big boys life goes on is it's the name of the game you mentioned the the kind of noise around it have they lost the dressing room was one of the things kind of in theater and and also one of the other things Rory the people to take on well I should go on that first and sorry yeah of course now you're dead right but I but you did that's all with the talk anyway this we see with other managers and manager loses job listen if you're not winning football matches you're gonna put yourself on the pressure I get that of course but this idea I think the one thing that kept us going actually I always felt with Ireland anyone I played people off thought the Irish spirit is great wiki and that can only take you so far you know in certain games and top international matches you need quality um every game and even go back to when I played everything was sure for Ireland because listen to whatever where we play we don't keep the ball well enough blah blah blah that's that's another long story but the drive and spirit can only keep you going so affair but I think the Irish Paris I said when we left the Irish when we left a job I know bitterness towards the prayers going there down tools in us they didn't show our last game was I think Denmark away and we drew nearly if I anything the prayers were unbelievable after the game I was delighted with the players that were we delighted with the quality no mere order Locker but we wrote our locking games that we won we beat Germany era the county of Germany scored a forest call to probably beat us by 10 in huh but we stayed in the game of the article we got an alien it Eliott equalizer in Germany brilliant players are fighting a cause but like I said you then you lose with Ireland decisive if you lose one it's maybe England certain countries can carry a few losses with Ireland you lose one to important players you're up against it and the bigger picture for Ireland and it's a big concern for everyone is the players know who I am playing in the Premier League who aren't playing friendly the big teams ultimately when you play international football that does catch up with you know Ireland can still over achieve and there might divided thesis after this campaign and there's not a wouldn't surprise me if they want tomorrow night but when you keep going eventually you will kind of hit a brick wall when a few players are missing and your lack of quality will go against you but the players I couldn't I know the stuff towards the end about me sports having wards or players the F words of players all the time that's the name of the game as well my job again when I went with man not to be this disc wire guy in the background and people would say why would I do it in media and so cuz man would ask me man we'd say would you do the press conference it have done it the last three years I said yeah do it nope if they said never again do the media no problems no big deal something on an ego trip for that but the players certainly had felt gave it her all and and I really couldn't fault them was a one or two towards the end and when you've been with players for a number of years and because there's a shortage of players I did feel some of the medical staff will probably pander into some of the players that would irritate me you know when you're speaking to players who aren't injured who didn't want to Train whoo that is a new trend and that's not just not yours there's a new trend amongst footballers at clubs now add a little bit of forest and particularly on a tuber Ireland they're on a program you know and their program is they don't play in they don't train it's great so they turn off they turn a fryer there you go but you're actually the medical staff said you're fitted yeah but I'm gonna do something back in the gym whenever dip in the pool weed you're not trained I don't know with you for your boots on I just get involved in ninety nine or ten v10 so that bit at the end but everything to usual stuff then people got run into the media the olive pals an immediate everything as usual is exaggerated our pack allies but I look back and I look back at the time I had work Marin in Ireland and I loved it I thought was brilliant was a brilliant job I got a great job satisfaction and I and I was I was proud to be involved with them but as I said we move on I thought the pitch who was fantastic yeah I thought it was a couple of lollipops away from being a cracker roms were just there where the picture what they did to after Italian game yeah do you I know who's that hand on my head but it's great football can bring you back down to earth because after the game listen it was brilliant and we thought we'd lost it I think when where's mr. chance yeah and the atmosphere brilliant listen obviously fantastic and I had that as a player as well in the merit brilliant but then people drag you back down because a member after the game were going back into the bit of a sing-song lads having a few pints of course and I remember all eat sex meself scale one or two people would get hold of my number unfortunately and he would text me and he said great results remember either thinking for anyway it's always great when you beat the Italian reserves and there we are taken all he's a good guy to use obviously Italians made a few changed it already qualified but I was brilliant do you do you class Martin as a friend yeah brilliant man really a lot of time for mountain but no brilliant guy a lot of time for merit and honestly do you know in the industry were in a niche I'm sure to see if you there's a bit of you know doggy dog and everyone looking after themselves and surviving in the game I get all that but I found mat and even when things are toward the end he'd fight your corner of your contract and I don't mean I mean for like shameless and cops and people like that know I have a lot of time for mountain and again I I think the treatment of Marin towards the end by a lot of sections from the Irish media was obviously certainly personal whatever you say and it was nasty because he a good guy yeah and there's not many good guys left in football let me tell you and he very much obviously fought your corner as well in those last couple of months when there were those issues which look everyone's heard the Stephen Ward what's up about the Harry our tour and John Walters issue oh yeah like so I'm doing a standard on that oh it's a look it's a lovely story like when you hear that you go fair enough that's what happened I don't think it was an issue well I don't see why you when I this she's won any players what again I don't even think Ward he was there but no he wasn't no but I give an example of what when you're working with shortened players who were playing at a certain level John I think John Walters for last two or three years because I know he's done the stroke I know his knee he's a good talker John p.m. John hadn't kicked the ball for last two or three years but does a lot of talk and it's amazing imagine if he had a good career but it was hairy ass there's no obviously it was a carrot if we're not law and air got relegated wardie I don't equality can get water he can get into stork team at the moment stock will bottom of the league so I don't know maybe at a point I don't know [Applause] would you class them as friends does any part of the so when you look at say so John Walters is in that company's in that situation where a club level he doesn't really have to train his body can't take training comes in to Ireland camp that's related to the medical staff there again he can do one session out of three but that's kind of modern football and thus you may have to change your ways no no honestly that is nonsense this is the danger of the game don't get me started on John I tell you what with John II Tom Walters toxic again am I gonna be the good CV imagine if you wanted trophy to have a good career as a professional sorry he went on to have a good career as a professional you don't okay he don't care and the games he was fit for Rhode Island he done well I have to say but towards the end when players are turning up and creating stuff do me a favor she defending John you know John well know if you want to work with OCR via IP yes yeah did you say they you talk about that Bosnia nice John yeah yeah how many years ago was that so is he gonna live off that like a certain player scored against Harlan do you live off that for next 20-30 years [Applause] listen I know all about John Walters I know all about him I gotta sell us Laufer again talks a good game and then there's a circuit of course there's all this circuit stuff goes on the TV how haha she was treated by me he's crying on the TV family situation that is the only one who's gone do me a favor now kick the ball for Burnley for two or three years let's be driving to training be under Radeon you know lay low for a while there long take it easy look at his medals and I wouldn't take long yeah [Applause] couldn't wait couldn't wait to get on VIP suits when I was the manager making all sorts of demands ironically two or three years ago when his career was in freefall and he'd injuries he went back to his John lon fantastic I was laughing my head off don't matter he missed the game we get beaten of whales John played didn't have a good game war deep-laid they need to go back and watch some of these games back remind themselves all bad they were John misses again I think we got to Turkey he speaks the matter he needs to rest for the game because if switch are playing Holloway mighty hall and misses again Maryland and guess what if switch got beaten up a whole and I think that might have been one of the last games John had because again whatever program who's on wasn't working because he finished with a knee problem two years only will you be seeing John soon I have no idea probably not now I suspect I saw my best to him I'll be sure I promise to pay me a visit on my house a few years ago and I'm still waiting and I gave him the address good ol John [Applause] you said he said they're about the next step and a return to management that for who for you and some who said this no you were saying just there about right but potentially returning it you're not waiting for you're not waiting for you said this yeah you're not wait expecting a call from Real Madrid anytime soon no from Valencia got a soldier I got to come [Applause] only got a so sure got the call from a bridge yeah yeah yeah good part of you think you know I know hit me it's not was never gonna happen not with them I think there's somebody selling the background they're having a sale I am no I was brilliant for a lien again in sport we've got you needed bit of luck but a timing and it was brilliant for Ali so would it be saying with Lampard I think was in the Chelsea at the right time Lee Lenin goes back to something you need a few breaks in this game and maybe I get an opportunity I don't think I feel I'm gonna get so please God something might come up do you intend on going out in your own now or would you go back in somewhere with Martin no no I no I think obviously after their affairs me a man discussed it many times when Overland the Royals shooted me an international football and we board agreed even before Maryland up the forest that we probably wouldn't wouldn't shoot me being assist in a club level so when I was up the forest the plan was a mechanic contract would have sorted out that I'd probably just go up there to the summer just to try it but I knew if I go back in a club it's gotta be the manager simple as that but I don't sleep at a loyalty towards mountain I didn't think Matt would go so quickly after I left but I knew after kind of monitor to that the assistant managers were all a club level I didn't really suit me it was fine but Ireland with no problem because obviously not together every day etc but the club stuff now yeah I definitely would have to go back in and be a manager and you've you know you talk about the modern dressing room all this kind of stuff do you feel like you have to hold your tongue when you go back in do you feel like you have to adapt what the way you'd like to manage the things you'd like to say it's not I'm intrigued by people who talk about my role in a dressing room particular people who've never been in the dressing room with me it's amazing what people think I do in the dressing room yeah you know I I usually kill three people a weekend yeah but I'm fairly plastered in the dress room trust me man this image is hard to shake it off I know but you asked an EDA players who walked me for a long time even never lied to stone the liver there for a year or two honestly quite relaxed even my time with it which people kind of almost write me off because of that but listen it was plus as a tips which I think the markets slightly different or what Ireland but enjoy - but I did do i this might surprise you dog have I made mistakes yeah course a Hatter um Gary was on a board area whatever industry you're learning and you're trying to obviously become better at it but I don't think I need to move it so far away from what my I suppose my traitor because my traits have taught me so fair but do I have to improve in certain aspects of my management skills absolutely and I've made mistakes and hopefully I learn from him I'm strange enough I'd probably make lots of more mistakes but again daunting for one second when I'm working with players in an address room or on the train and pitch obviously Gary mid and I'm actually quite believing that relaxed when I'm walking with players do I put demands on him of course I do but I feel like it's kind of got to the stage where people say to me you know I was very demanding as if I should almost apologize for it you know particularly when I'm in the courts and all normal people say or the modern players don't like that I'm not doing it all the time if you're doing that every day Alex fro continue every day people talk about the hairdryer you just try and get the timing right when to have a gourd players wear at the time people thought I was having a go at John Walters a Harrier you're trying to something you're trying to motivate people and something you're more to Vietnam sometimes you get it wrong some player has enjoyed that to go yeah you know I enjoyed it I enjoyed add a heated discussion whatever you might say but I can obviously got a pick and choose but other players react to it you go I think you again Barbie John and Harry at the time or obviously war d1 India you know maybe issues ye lads because I'd sometimes would step back and go a bit delight that I get that drastically wrong with a situation that's under maybe but a tipsters not maybe did maybe I did but I think maybe maybe they got it wrong maybe they overreacted because sometimes when managers that I go of me Brian Clough these are great managers Brian Clough you're on about more the French often is when document punched me after a game one night with Crystal Palace in the club I know slam and it's funny bright off as a genius did I take it that badly off him I just went no he was upset he was he did they punched me and I'm thinking that's the thing you're a brilliant manager and I Kim I came in the next year and I trained and I didn't text anyone in the media ring somebody I've gone wax app or Twitter whatever they got says somebody punched me except the managers upset you take it you take it players you take it so I'm not changing my ways for nobody and are you and are you blackboard or in the house so y'all get back in like if a job didn't come I was very lucky I'm I'm definitely a girl when I analyze my career I've been done one day Loki's guys on the planet and I never get bored and now I'm never home going balls got something to do if you're five children keeps you busy I've got me a couple of dogs me wife I get a few little bits of work but I'm never bored I'll keep meself busier go and see somebody or come back to Ireland quite a bit don't the car watch matches I got to croc Parker watch like watching rugby never get bored I'm very lucky in me life honestly I know complaint and this idea I've I need to get back in the game because I might go stir-crazy no no no wouldn't fine would you ever move back to Ireland yeah yeah I think so I think I literally have that talk I think every single day really yeah yeah I think it's all it's always there um but I have to look at the bigger picture so you got me family but they're growing up now and yeah I think there's not a day goes by where I don't think yeah eventually get back to Ireland of course I know you think if it an amazing time over in England obviously is there ever a certain sadness when you think she's my age now I spent more of my life away from home they're not home where is that I think obviously when you get a bit older people dockable in homesick yeah I get homesick everyday back for particularly for [ __ ] yeah it's really strange so yeah dude but I also know that football in England's gave me a great life and it's gave my family great life and my family in Cork I caught my blesses for that and I'm also only around the corner it's not as if I'm in Australia so I can get back to [ __ ] I like I do over the last particularly the last few months I suppose when I'm kind of not walking fell'd I love I love coming back on the boss I have a bit of freedom I answer to nobody you're on about TV I can kind of dip into the TV dip back out of it and Jesus honestly I'm I caught my blessing a very very lucky content I wouldn't get off there would you not laugh it's a dangerous word to use yeah you you always fight that often time yeah but I'm obviously worried about don't to get in a comfort zone either where you think life's Korea and I just sit back and not do anything you do have to keep yourself busy as I said I look at certain games look at your own clubs where I think I think that club would suit me or whatever it might be I don't I don't sit around hoping for managers to lose their jobs I don't yeah but there are certain clubs I look I got I think that I think I'd fancy maybe doing something with that group of players but I also have to be again I go back to it I might never get back it I might never get a job opportunity videos when jobs come up I very rarely but never get linked with jobs so it's not as if I'm I don't think clubs or chairman achiever executives out there have got me at the top of their list but what I would like to do I suppose sometimes is get an opportunity to speak to a club even if they don't give me the job I've been interview for jobs over last years and they've gone with somebody else and that's fine but you want to get a chance to try and sell yourself look somebody in the eye and and obviously do well in the interview so I hopefully I get that opportunity a few months but I'm not fearful of it either if it doesn't happen I'll be fine it's the Ireland job still an ambition who knows a the danger for me know people talk about you and it's unfair because no matter what I say about the Irish job or the Irish situation it's unfair on office he'd make at the moment on a manager and Robbie the people don't even get on with it either go crack off it and and let them see how they're doing good luck to him and but if Jackie ever came back round who knows where I am in the pecking order funnier things have happened but we'd say it's obviously set up for the next few years with Mick McCarthy now and then this rather unusual succession plan where Stephen Kenney is coming in one of many unusual things that have happened in Irish football over the past yeah let's see how that pans oh you know might walk oh really well who knows again again one thing I don't think any of us could do veneers predict the future we you know we don't know what's gonna happen with results or wrong careers so I can I don't go to bed every night thinking you know how that job comes over the earth job comes up good luck to people and see how they're doing the job and if they win football matches their be fine and if they don't did all of us he'd be under pressure like everybody else have you followed what's going on in the FBI do you know what not really my own eats I suppose the only thing I can say about whatever is going on with the FBI and with the last few years when I was with them I loved it I talked a lot of good people there obviously the stuff gonna know that I probably haven't got a clue about but I love me time there are some really good people to watch some good staff and others people in the background you know I'm genuine football and people whatever we say football's a great game so I've kind of stepped back I've had my time there's no point me getting involved I suppose in the politics of it um but you hope they get true and I'm sure they will and everyone can learn from it because you know you know nobody's perfect to rap over will be here pretty much our life and he said that still doesn't keep you up nice your f in Saipan earlier not getting into it he said he said kind of thing it does not cross your mind you know you mentioned you get cork every day with that cross remind often at this stage is it still raw what could have happened I might have happened I guess what really no I am again I think he's important people look at if people look at the facts people did he do facts the bottom I run about management mana management dealing with players if a manager is gonna step up in front of a group of players and staff and maket make accusations against any player whatever me are Robbie or duffer or whoever was there's gonna be trouble there is you're done about management and getting a group together and again I don't know how many games we played to qualify for the World Cup somebody might tell me in the audience or Google it or whatever I think it might have been with the playoff games I think was out of twelve or fourteen I think it was how many fourteen right I think I missed one match I think I missed thanks Mick I think I missed one match I think I did somebody might think I missed one match and then on the Evita World Cup there's a meeting with all the players don't forget to kit Nala that was all sorted or die sick of repeating myself with all that stuff that bit and you're sitting with a group of players you're flying on the next year to your Fisher train and there's a meet and called in front of everybody and exactly get accusations made against me about missing one game in the whole campaign you know what he expects him no I totally it's such a loss for you to give up in that World Cup does any party ever think oh I should have played that world Copa and just got the hell out of the situation though I wish hadn't kind of panned out that way of course but again I know it takes two to tango and I have to become your parent of course but I just think what I can I honestly a bit like the United stuff what was I supposed to say you know I missed one game and a medical staff were involved and making this accusation against me in front even if you can pulled me one to one and this was on TV the World Cup wasn't three months earlier or three months later or flying out tomorrow you've been in front of all the group please tell me whatever does people in our own businesses I love to say what do you think was gonna happen when you make accusations against I suppose a character like me would have been a senior player or a cap forget about the captaincy I think if I was sitting there and mixed it up and made accusations against 9tv other players I'd be gone or where you going with this yeah I know tomorrow hang-ups have you got about all this carry on yeah so ya know I don't that doesn't keep me awake I think I was fortunate again I'd obviously played in the 94 World Cup of experience to walk up at the taste of it and I I kind of don't think the baggage from Saipan I don't really carry around with me okay I think other people should carry around with them not me did you carry it around with you for a couple of years to take a long time to kind of dissolve away of it um yeah I suppose it would have been a again de-ice opposed the word I'd use it would be a lot of em a lot of anger I suppose afterwards especially afterwards again the usual spin-offs that come out of it he said this he said that did it again people getting sidetracked I suppose and getting brainwashed again all people have to do is look at the facts look at the facts and that's it and I'm comfortable with that again again if it was any other player I'd be sitting over the wall where's this gone my Gary was saying he was looking at the meeting with me and a manager and a leader and you're looking sometimes and that's where you hope sometimes people go put a stop to this but it was soon as mix started it and I'm sure give his own course he would for the players who were in there and I know players of all kinda tiptoe around it I wish one or two other players which say something like well you didn't make an accusation against the player I was gonna happen yeah I said no I make I think you're wrong dear but I've seen them on on the flight you know yeah pretzel mangia and there was nothing at that stage there's no chance that you're going we should target is privately it's just like you can't I think if Nick I wanted your senior players are interrupted but then there's an environment again I I can't be criticized order people in the room because they're probably I think they probably would've been shocked by all of it as well because again it was a strange enough it was kind of an even and we have after a week from getting over there with all the trouble with the girl we kind of obviously got through all like you do as a team a bit like uniting of difficult spells businesses people follow but you kind of in she get true and you got yeah listen we're better for that but when this took off you're not going is someone gonna interrupt this and and I think people again will I think it would have been certain players they were and why I don't really want to get and I understand that as well I don't and I don't think people should all step in yeah they probably said as long as I'm okay and I'm gonna play in the World Cup I understood all that yeah even the next one we're all even I know and I definitely think I you certainly had a different relationship no doubt in my mind with the iris prayers than I had with my United teammates who were dear to their stuff and a lot of the lads I play darling over number of years I never really got to know him and I suppose I wasn't really have to kind of that important to him because when we she's not for Ireland particularly mural ideas you obviously come in on a kind of Monday more and the game was the Wednesday so you'd leave after some international trips gone I didn't he speak to anybody in that sense because you got training you go back to your room so I did not this kind of bond with the Irish players that probably taught my and I had to remind myself when I was playing for Ireland what the game is all about particularly senior level and people would sometimes question my character he was a bit Moody resisted which was our nuns I was there to win I wasn't here to be pals with everybody and I think that at the end when they kind of backfired nobody was gonna come up to my room ago please come back right over life you know if you're off you're off there's a selfish side to football as well but then again I think with my traits as much as I knocked myself I've also played the captain's Kenny Cunningham these people who are obsessed with being popular and kind of pals with everybody and obsessed with the media you're going yeah but you're not going to try and win the game no no just try and be positive everybody you're not for me either you want your captains and leaders to be whatever is going on would I'm going but I think they might help us to win the game on Saturday so am but I won't get started on him you know it blows open you go home and it's this unbelievably huge story like here I'm sure you got word how big it was and you're out and you're walking the dog and then you're doing the artery interview and there's like steel about you there's no doubts just this front of someone when you close the door behind you and you're in the midst of something like that are you stressed or you're thinking oh my god this is this is mad I think the distress and all the war he comes for your arrest your family really because I kind of knew I was at the meet and I knew what was said towards me whereas other people were getting different stories and he said that in here and I'm pretty well I know obviously would have been heard from a family in car know that for a fact of course put it this way of if my son was no plane for Ireland and he went on a journey and played a lot of games and missed on it I know I'd be upset even if he was saying no it's indeed what I know as a parent here so I think my family would have suffered a lot more than me because I knew what was going on and I knew I kinda keeps in had to fight my corner you do in life sometimes situations come up worthy and I rolled a lot of stuff you know I sometimes I go I just go with this I'm not good but a lot of times and people look you in the eye and you got not know I I can't accept that and I think that's that's the way it is it's funny you mentioned that your daughter is here nice and they're all at an age now I guess we're very much fully aware of your career and all the success yeah did you two go through a process with them where they are asking you I've been there no they've never really brought it up I'd be honest well I've got I've got four daughters so that the girls are too busy with their makeup and stuff so they wouldn't be fine I mean that in a nice way you know I did kind of chakras down about the Kardashians about the hair they've got you know all these program to love Ireland that's their priority now not necessarily my career and they were not a young age where they didn't have to take it too seriously so my family I've never I never kind of took my career on my football I suppose in a sense kind of some strange this I think if you ever came to my house you wouldn't think I've been involved in sport at football I was gone I kind of always kept me family bit distance from it they never really came to did everybody came to many matches and I kind of enjoyed that because I also took me you're playing sport maybe Gary will agree you're kind of like an actor you know you're on like an actor you saw a picture up there at his skin head and you're going here again I always thought when I was going to play football I was going to go into I've gone to war so I was fighting my corner my livelihood I wanted my family to have a good life contract I want my mom and dad to be good and so you fight me all right so don't get distracted by all that kind of and that's why a little bit when we were deportable United all the families involved I remember thinking keep the families it's great if you win something get them involved but this is serious stuff I've talked football very seriously since I was eight years of age I have I've just been obsessed with and trying to win maybe too much I don't know so with my women I think my kids have always taken I remember your honor about loyalty were your kids and family I remember saying to him I never got you want to come to the game they go now we're busy but I think they came on time to a match at Ipswich and I know if they did they came and they left I think after 40 minutes I think we were to kneel down I remember god I got home and I went what sing it again I don't know we left it was freezing so that was your kind of loyalty towards me typically Gary do you think everything you've listened over the last twenty minutes half an hour do you look from the outside but our obsession this country's obsession with Roy and talking about Roy you find it all a bit insane it's not hugely surprising actually to be fair probably around 98 similar type of thing with David Beckham in 96 with Gaza you think of the way in which Gaza was sort of five sixties that obsession with sort of one figure David Beckham than the same Wayne Rooney's had it in previous years I think the country it happens in other countries obviously your Roy's usually popular in Ireland and sort of a huge figure so you know I understand it because ultimately I sort of lived it with other players with England you know it was a the scrutiny on the scrutiny on players like Roy like David Beckham like Wayne Rooney I like you know Paul Gascoigne in 96 when he was a sort of superstar is huge it's absolutely huge they're judged all the time without you know just by people essentially there's Roy just said that don't know them that don't understand them and just if you like he's like I think I think this arts folks in hairdryer one is the probably the best analogy it doesn't describe the person Australia's Ferguson and the idea that you know Roy was in the changing room sort of you know ranting that was his point five percent of the time you know the ninth 99.5% at the time was humor for quiet actually some you know wasn't supposed to the noisiest in the jessamine so yeah people like David May in there and you know some of the younger lads you were really sort of boys just all the time so you think about the fact that considered you know always thinking having a cup of tea we Dennis you don't the other people you know it's like you know the only I think there are two people in the dress seemed like I'd have a cup of tea berry but now there's a couple has a cup of seed but that was it you know they room together the oboe of choir and then Roy obviously was a huge character who came alive on the pitch came alive in training yeah but you know yeah yeah boundaries yeah boundaries and to be fair you actor I think my view one it was that I think the five or six young lads in the team we got to know the boundaries quickly and early and that's an understanding and awareness of the players that you play and with it's an understanding of where you could you know Nicky but at different boundaries than Paul skulls than them Ryan geeks then Roy Keane yeah to understand the different characters within the team you had to understand what sort of made them tick and I think the most important thing is you had to be tolerant of each other you had to be tolerant of each other in the dress room everybody was different and if you overstepped the boundary not just with Roy but with other players it was going to be a problem and there are times in the dressing room where I knew when he said before he was on the list and he jolts and there were times when we knew as the other lads me Giggs his goals you know played with him faces we knew when someone was sort of just yeah just like a woodpecker when you when someone was just stuck because they you know there was either something that he'd seen that he didn't like something they smelt something that but we knew that smell we knew that sin we knew that same with the manager yeah I don't think I ever ate after three four years of playing the first team I never never was surprised by when he came to halftime now they go a certain player and he was gonna happen you just you've got to know them and I think my view and it was that the times where you thought are oh you've always slept them out this day I think he particularly did once we meet at Coventry I'm very disappointed that is the only time he's ever come up to me only aggressively you know I came up to me like no property no proper angry and I just yeah yeah I just say connects research he wanted the cross in first time and I just thought I might take it before I put it in it's not honestly true but I remember turning around to him yes he's first it's for statements he was cross the [ __ ] ball first time now remember same cough which it wasn't particularly well taken I knew that was not a problem at halftime yeah but in josslyn's now on the Monday morning I went up to see him you might know you probably remember one thing that I always thought that it was a problem was if you let things fester with Roy particular you know you mean if it went one day without speaking to him then two days then three days and for that I saw players do this I used to say you know I thought that happen though you say just gonna speak speak I remember going up to speech him on the Monday and it was fine but I think because I think you know as a younger player that was a younger player at the time probably 20 to 23 you rather let it fester then it evolved into something that was bigger than it actually was or you dealt with it there and then and I think no yeah similar situation we Giggsy I think at one point and maybe other players where there were moments where I had to remember ones getting in one morning that's the two affair we're probably the first thing in the morning like eight o'clock or something like that I remember him in Giggsy started an argument about 8 o'clock and I was listening to her thinking oh this is not great I'll go get my breakfast it came down about 27 minutes passed day and they were still going oh this he's not gonna go but then it sorted out after a couple of months so you know I mean this is a couple you mean the moments that happened like that but then there were certain players who didn't sort of you know that didn't you know I just it festered on and it moved on it wasn't just Roy by the way there was other things all the relationships in the dressing room where this happened you know Andy Cole and Teddy Sheringham and you know their other relationships like it's in the dressing room that you knew that the rest of the players you start to manage there but it was usually because a lack of understanding tolerance or awareness of where the boundaries were of each person that's that's essentially what it was and I you know I personally from a point of view never had a problem with it in fact like I said before I just thought to make it quite simply I never chose the teammates that I was in the dressing room with but knew that had I felt as I had to get on with every I felt as I had to get on with every play I would I was that type of person I felt as though I needed to you know not be friend I was not friends with anybody other than the lads that you know I was with I don't go out for a drink with any of them the other lads that weren't sort of like I say fill our backs or scalzi or everything laughs but I felt as though there had to be that sort of because I think in difficult moments you know in in seasons I did think the spirit was unbelievable and nights out were unbelievable when they happened they were amazing Christmas party or the night in preseason or the night when we were in the league for me that it was people say what the best moments were in my career with there were those moments there the things I miss actually they're the things I miss I don't miss the football don't miss being in the change room I don't miss the training I do miss those moments of camaraderie of where basically you're all going out together you're having a good time you're enjoying so if you've won the trophy are you basically Christmas party or I do miss those moments Roy would probably say something different he might not miss those moments right but I did I fell out to me with it I felt sometimes in preseason we got and I out and the team would come together the most unbelievable night the spirit the day afternoon train and the day after that was incredible and I just thought you're something you can't be that I knew were Unbeatables I knew full well we'd seen everything of each other you know falling all over all being sick whatever it was doing you know knows me as well by the way no it's true no I remember once to be fair I think 18 19 outside the golden rice ball and eat on the cross tree in Manchester lying down before being sick and I remember to be fair Beck's and Ben thought in Chris Kasper getting me home and those things you think but there were moments where you came together and you could tell those stories of each other for the next he lived off those stories for the next two months in the dressing room with each other that coming together of people whereby you just I know that's what made us what made us on be able the football made us unbeatable but I missed those moments to be fair and from a point of view of ROI sort of the last 25 minutes I've listened to this a lot of this today you know he's taught me a lot of stories today that I find compelling just compelling to listen to he told me a story about Mattie Taylor trying to say I'm a tea tailor for Sunderland I thought was amazing I was laughing I need to tell I think you need to tell that story was absolutely amazing Barry's actually you're talking about his experiences in management where you know that similar experiences to prefer myself at Valencian with England then you just think incredible experiences that I don't recognize sometimes to be fair the description of Roy Keane or David Beckham or Wayne Rooney I don't recognize it actually sometimes I don't recognize the actual description of them and all the moments where they may have done an individual thing but actually from a point of view of the 99.9 percent at the time that I was with them during a football career it isn't them it isn't them as people you know Roy at home would be completely different than Roy you may be the change room or Roy on the pitch or same with all of us and the scrutiny on these individuals is because they were the best players the most famous players the players got the best story go back to George best you go back to all the players of our great careers they're the best players the best players in the plane for the biggest Club I Trump that everyone has an obsession in Dublin in court in Thailand in Singapore in Manchester in London everywhere that's why Paul Pogba now is the obsession because he's the biggest player at the biggest club he's a World Cup winner and it should be a compliment that people are talking about him I don't see it when I criticize Paul Pogba where like when I criticize Paul Pogba after the penalty incident at wolves I don't see it as being any different than the criticism of say Roy Keane or David Beckham or Wayne Rooney the best player the leader the caps in the team will stand up and he will take the brunt of the criticism just as the manager will in the coach will it won't the assistant coach it won't be the left winger or the right back or the left bucket with a player who is the number one player in the team and that's never changed it's not a it's not you know but I'm sure Paul Pogba you know I speak to people and apparently is a great lad he trains well he you know he wants to you know he's a really good person I had suits where was it at the club with him when I was young lad so when people criticize him or put the pressure on him or apply the pressure on him it's because he's the best he's the he's the shining light he's the Bryan Robson of the eighties now United they're in trouble people hung everything off Bryan Robson everything everybody now hangs a lot of Paul Pogba but that's the pressure that he wants he wants to be the best player in the world so now go on show us that you're the best player in the world carry this team which is young inexperienced hasn't got the best of the most know-how needs leaders and characters on the pitch and I said two weeks ago to be fair on television would it be great if he thought of himself as been the player of the year this year the Player of the Year what's he need to do that carry manchester united into the Champions League win the europa league drive them forward Tekkit is your responsibility at this club for 12 months and you're gonna be the best player in the league and one of the best players in the world that's what I want from Paul Pogba that's what I want from him because I think he's capable of doing it I think he's capable of doing that have faith in Him to do it but then I see us this incident like wolves and that disappoints me that disappoints me so I he has to he has to take the criticism for that we've got to wrap this off unfortunately we've been way over time with my tailor store is it were detailing [Laughter] [Applause] set me up for the fall yeah probably won't be as funny here as it was on the flight this morning Appa Sunderland blah blah blah trying to get players up the Sunderland all was difficult their wife didn't want to go up there because they want to go shopping they did it eventually get Matty Taylor up babies leaving I think Portsmouth and he didn't opportunity I think to go to Sunderland of Bolton so I met him at the stadium up at the boardroom get mauled the talk about an hour to he said I've got a love thing about the big decisis course you take your time huge decision or what you don't did a care pack as we walked on he says listen oi ug Susan thanks for the chat said yeah you take your time big decision understand for your family no problem Bolton Sunderland to Bolton is no comparison but it's in Baltimore not bad team at the time I seen walking to his car says listen brilliant thanks for coming up I'm literally turn his back I mean I got a text texts not many people texting me so this is a I rice Maddie Taylor all right I've got my fallen I think was a blackberry at a time they were in and I went there I could see him getting his car I've I've decided to go to bolt and I'm waving without the cap [Applause] join rings betting now for a
