what is up guys and welcome back to the hammerdance youtube channel today this video is going to be focusing on obs and what i mean by that is we are going to basically be putting together a full guide on obs uh obs is used for streaming or recording uh it's a brilliant piece of software it's absolutely amazing you can do so many really cool things with obs but there's a lot to learn so this video is going to be tailored more towards beginners and intermediate slash advanced users within obs i'm assuming that you've already downloaded and installed it so we won't go over that but basically we will start from you installed obs and now you have a fresh obs with no settings changed no scenes created no sources and we're going to go through it and i'm going to try and make it as short as possible so that by the end of this video you guys are able to hit that start streaming button or hit that start recording button and get the quality that you're looking for but before we do that guys let's give a shout out and thank you to our sponsor for today's video own.tv own.tv is the place to go guys if you're looking for some fresh new graphics for your stream whether you're on twitch youtube or facebook gaming you'll find something that's a perfect fit for your channel they offer full themed overlay packages which are great if you're trying to give your stream a complete makeover but let's say you're just looking to pick up some new alert graphics don't worry because they've got you covered there too you can find single graphics such as alerts banners panels and logos as well and one of the best parts about most of these overlays is that they are completely modular so if you and your friends all pick up the same overlay such as this rodin one right here you can change the colors and tweak it to match your brand and none of you will have the exact same overlay if you guys are looking to take your stream to the next level be sure to check out own.tv using my link below to support the channel alright guys so when you first boot up obs you're not going to see anything down here in your scene section or your sources section but before we get into doing that part let's go over some settings right so hit settings down here and we're going to start off with the general tab in the general tab here there's nothing really important that you're going to need to change so kind of ignore all this you can skim through it on your own if you want but nothing here is going to drastically change your stream or recording in any way all i do you know is suggest that you use dark mode here because we are not fans of regular system light mode we don't like it on this channel we use dark mode everyone knows that so switch it to dark mode and let's continue on the stream tab here this is where you're going to set up obs to connect to your streaming account whether that's on twitch facebook youtube wherever you might be uh at the top here you're gonna select service and then select your service for me i stream on twitch so i have twitch selected we want the server selection to be auto so that it automatically picks the best uh server um and then right here if your account is not connected it's gonna say connect account you're gonna hit that button and it's gonna prompt you to log into your twitch account or log into your youtube account whatever you selected and then obs is now tied to your streaming account uh whatever you use it's pretty cool it didn't used to be like this you used to actually have to copy and paste your stream key in there not anymore now you just log into your account it's tied right into obs and it's awesome uh next tab down here we have output so a bunch of stuff we're going to be changing in here so make sure at the top uh you switch it from simple to advanced mode i can't switch it right now because i'm in the middle of a recording but switch it to advanced mode and let's start with the streaming tab right here in the streaming tab uh ignore everything up top here except for encoder what you're going to want to do here is switch it to nvidia nbank h.264 uh hyphen new encoder if you have that if you do not have that encoder and all you see is x264 you can use that encoder as well the difference is x264 is using your cpu or your processor to do the encoding whereas nvenk h.264 is using your graphics card so generally if you have like a 10 series graphics card or higher with nvidia or an equivalent um you know of amd i would suggest using your graphics card as your encoder but however if you do not have that option x.2 x264 is a good option as well uh so anyway going down ignore rescale output we don't want to do anything here with that rate control uh for streaming you do want it on cbr and right here of your bitrate this is where it gets a little bit tricky if you're streaming at 1080p at 60fps i would suggest something between the lines of 6000 to 8000 if your internet can handle it uh but if you're doing 720 at 30 you can definitely get away with using like 2500 to 3k for your bitrate um so kind of judge it by that if you're playing a lot of fast paced games like shooters and things like that you do want to try and have the best bit rate possible so that's why i'm using 8k it is gimped a little bit on twitch but i was streaming on youtube which is why it's a little bit higher i think twitch caps you at 6500 if you're not a partner so keep that in mind you can find that actually on twitch's website they do have that information but if you're streaming on youtube you can crank it up a lot higher uh keyframe interval you want to set this to 2 preset max quality and profile high now the preset you can mess with this on your own if you're starting to get a little bit of choppiness in your recordings or you're losing fps in your game you can drop this down to quality there's not much of a difference between quality and max quality and then kind of go down and down and down or start lower and then keep cranking it up um and just see if you can run it on max quality and not lose any fps that would be great uh profile we're going to set to high look ahead we want check psycho visual tuning we want checked gpu set to zero and max b frames set to two jumping over now into the recording tab this is has nothing to do with streaming this is only if you are recording videos we have some different settings here so basically at the top here we want it set to standard recording path you're going to hit browse here and select wherever you want your recordings to be stored upon finishing the recording recording format i wouldn't suggest recording in mp4 for everyone use flv what happens with mp4 is let's say i'm recording a video in mp4 i am right now for the sake of this video uh because i've actually been trying to get a recording to be corrupt while i'm recording it so that i can use it as an example to show people but it hasn't happened yet but if you're recording in mp4 format and let's say my computer blue screens or something crashes or obs crashes uh with mp4 most of the time your video will be corrupt right so if you were recording for two hours and then it crashed or even 10 minutes and it crashed that video is no longer valid it's gone you cannot recover it most of the time whereas flv it will render out the video and you have everything saved up until the point of that crash so i do not suggest recording an mp4 format uh encoder same as the streaming what we were talking about if you have this option use nvidia nbank h.264 if you don't x264 is fine as well ignore rescale output and down here is where it gets a little bit different right so for recording we want to use cqp and my settings are i use the cq level of 14 keyframe interval at 2 and then obviously preset max quality profile high and like i said you can adjust this down accordingly if you're dropping fps you can even raise the cq level to like 16 or 18 if you're getting some fps issues but i don't think that you will with that uh it's probably a little bit more beneficial to drop this down if you're having fps issues than it is to raise the cq level uh look ahead we want unchecked psycho visual tuning we want checked gpu at 0 max b frame set to 2. in the audio tab here this is where if you had multiple audio tracks which i don't you can add different audio tracks in here and replay buffer is basically if you want the the replay buffer enabled uh what this will do is allow you to set a hotkey later on in the settings here i'll show you you can set a hotkey and if you press that hotkey it will it will save the last 30 seconds of your recording or your stream really this is more beneficial for streaming like if you're trying to save clips directly to your hard drive this is a super useful feature i suggest enabling that if you do want to do something like that so moving on to audio in the audio tab here we want sample rate set to 48 we want channels set to stereo and under global audio devices this is where it's going to be a little bit different for everybody um so for me i run everything through my go xlr right here everything is run through my go xlr so as you can see here i basically have one audio device which is broadcast stream mix which is my go xlr if i did not have a go xlr you would want to choose your desktop audio device um set to your headphones or your speakers whatever you're using to hear sound and then for your microphone you're going to want to select your microphone right there just for me though it's a little different because i'm only using a go xlr which everything is run through this one channel right here for meters set it to fast peak meter type sample peak monitoring device we set the default and everything else down here these are basically hotkeys you can set to either mute or delay uh specific scenes i don't use this feature at all but if you did want to use it it's right down here moving on to the video tab this is a pretty simple tab your base canvas resolution is going to be whatever you are viewing uh whatever you are gaming at or whatever your resolution is on your screen right so i'm on a 240hz 1080p monitor so i use 1920x1080 and your output scaled resolution is what you want your stream or your recording to be right so if i wanted to game at 1080 i would leave this set to 1920 by 1080 and i wanted my stream to be 720 i would change this to 1280 by 720. so i'm still playing and gaming at 240 1080p and my stream is outputting at 720p that's where you would change that however i stream at 1080 so i leave it set to the same resolution downscale filter set this to langsos you can drop it to the middle option if you're having fps issues at all but i don't think you will again the downscale filter is not super heavy on your cpu and then common fps values this is where you will set the fps of your stream or recordings my recordings and streams are in 60fps thus i have it set to 60. moving on to the hotkeys right here as you guys can see this is where i was talking about before you can set a hotkey to uh do a replay buffers to save some clips and things like that you can hotkey basically any function within obs right by using a key on your keyboard and assigning that key a function with an obs so if i wanted to have a key on my keyboard let's say i wanted to use my backslash um to start and stop streaming you just click right in here and click the backslash and it would bind that key to that action now when you're you're just doing whatever you want if you just tap your backslash if obs is open it will start streaming or it will stop streaming i do however not suggest binding start and stopping stream uh to a key because you can accidentally go live and things like that and i'm sure you guys have seen like twitch fails and all that crazy stuff we don't really want that so it's really not that big of a deal to hit the you know go down and actually click start streaming but to use hotkeys for other things like disabling sources or enabling cameras or switching to different scenes definitely suggest that if you don't have a stream deck or some sign of button press for it you can use keybinds right here within obs pretty cool features right there i would definitely take advantage of those if you don't have a stream deck moving down to the advanced settings right here under general at the top we have process priority process priority is basically how your pc is focusing on giving resources to obs sorry i hit the microphone right there um so if you have your process priority set to higher than normal what's happening is your pc is going to be taking resources from other programs probably the game that you're playing and throwing those resources more towards obs so you kind of want to try and keep this on normal i wouldn't suggest going higher than normal simply because that will drastically decrease your fps in whatever games you are playing under video here we have it set to direct 3d 11 we have nv12 for the color format 709 for the color space and color range is set to full you can definitely copy those settings it will work out perfectly and everything else in here is kind of nothing super important if you want to use some things here you can stream delay i would suggest if you want to add an extra delay to your stream like let's say you're getting stream sniped or you just kind of you don't want it to feel super live which is weird to say because it's a live stream but you don't want it to feel super live you want it to be you know two minutes behind you would enable this and set the duration it's in seconds right here um and that would basically delay your stream even further automatically reconnect is a good feature i think it's enabled by default but if it's not i would enable this um basically if you're having internet troubles while your stream is live it puts up a little prompt on screen for your viewers and lets them know and it attempts to automatically reconnect uh throughout the whole process until you're you know you get your ip address back and you're connected to the internet and then it will reconnect you without shutting down the whole stream it's very cool uh everything else down here wouldn't mess with any of that and as far as settings wise that is it guys those are the settings now we can get into the basics of adding scenes and sources and things like that all right so now we're here and we messed with our settings we got everything the way that we want we're ready to start streaming we're ready to start recording however our obs i'm sure on your screen this is black if you haven't set it up before so the first thing that we want to do and we'll do the very basics here because once you get the basics it's pretty easy to dive in and do some other stuff and i have tons of videos on my channel guys if you want to dive really deep into obs but like i said this is just the basics a little bit of intermediate and advanced stuff in here to get people started if you didn't know where to start once you installed obs so first thing you want to do is come down here and you're going to hit the plus sign and you are going to create a scene right and now that scene is going to be just a black screen okay so you hit it hit the plus sign name your scene if you want to name it main uh basically for our first scene what we'll do is just have your camera and your game whatever you're playing right so you can name this scene let's just name it main test right you can't see me i'm gone but i'm here i promise uh so anyway i'm gonna go back to my main scene so you can see me again um and what you're gonna do in that main test is you're gonna come down here to sources and click the plus sign and you're gonna hit video capture device right uh we're gonna select create new you're gonna name it you know camera or whatever hit okay and this is where obviously if my camera wasn't in use right now you'd be able to see my camera because it's the cameling 4k connected to my canon this is where you select your webcam uh fill out the the details here the resolution if you have it at 1080 uh set the resolution to 1080 fps 60 frames or 30 whatever it is that you're using color space i suggest 709 color range full and then hit okay and that will basically bring your camera up as like a full screen camera like this um and then what you want to do if you're trying to edit the size of your camera and i'll show you guys right here so you can see is i'm going to unlock it you could lock and unlock things so that you can't accidentally edit them and you click on it right and now if i click on my camera okay there we go so this is my camera so you come down here and you select your camera by clicking on it make sure it's unlocked so you can move it you'll get this red outline around it showing that you have it highlighted and you can drag it around or do whatever we can make it bigger whoa that's a little too big we lost it where'd the camera go guys right so you can click on it make it bigger make it smaller basically do whatever i'm going to fit mine uh under my camera border so the way the sources work down here guys is they work as a layer system right so you see how my camera you can see the border that i have my camera border is over my camera that's how we want it if i were to take my camera which is this and drag it above the border you can see it hides it uh so we basically want my camera to be under the border we want to put it down there and we want to shrink it down inside the border so that it fits just right probably like that yep that looks good and then we can lock it i suggest locking any sources that you do add after you get them where you want so you don't accidentally move them or shrink them or do some crazy stuff like i just lost my camera yeah so you don't want to do that um yeah so add your camera in right there shrink it down to a nice small size and you'll be perfect um next thing you want to do is be able to see your desktop and there's two ways to do this right so if you want your uh screen to actually be visible it's called display capture this means that anything is that is on the screen that you select like your main screen your viewers will be able to see it i don't suggest this for gaming uh for a few reasons because it does impact the fps of your game uh you will feel a little bit of input lag when you are gaming um and simply like if something pops up on your screen like a message from someone or something you don't want viewers to see i don't suggest it so for purposes of this video right here i have i'm using display capture uh which is right here um to capture my whole monitor so that you guys can see my screen and i can explain this stuff to you but for gaming what you're gonna want to use is hit the plus sign you're gonna go to game capture right as you can see i've added all the games that i've played right here uh we're going to just do you know name it new game test just to show you and you'll get this window right here and make sure your game is open right so open up your game before you add this source and then when your game is open you go here and you're going to click capture specific window and then right here in this box if your game is running it will be there to select you select that game and hit ok now your game will be on the screen as well however if you notice since i added a new source it's above everything else right so if i had a game open right this game would be over everything else you wouldn't be able to see me so you're going to want to take that game that you just added and make sure that it's under your camera so now your camera will be here your game will be in the background everything will look nice those are the basics of adding scenes and sources right now let's say you want to have another scene like this where it's just like a full screen camera super easy all you're going to do is drop down here click the plus sign add a new scene just call it like full screen like that come back down here i can't show you because obviously i'm recording it and when i do that my screen turns black you need to come down here to the plus sign hit video capture device hit add existing because we already added your camera select your camera and it will be full screen and then that can be another whole scene that you have that you can switch to when you want to just do some full screen video like this it's super useful super nice but now let's say you have this and you want to add some images right like let's say you have a little bit of an overlay that someone made you that you want to add uh sort of like this screen that i have right here this is basically just an image right and i have shrunk my camera down to this size to fit in this box and then in this box up here i have you know my uh my display capture going what you're going to do for that to add images is the same exact thing you come down here to hit the plus sign hit image add the image hit browse find whatever image you want to add and then when you get to it like this screen here just like we did before select your camera shrink it down uh make sure it's under the image and the layers if this is like a cutout and you want your camera to be behind it it's super simple guys it's really really easy once you get the hang of it it's really really easy i'm not going to get into the more advanced things like filters and stuff like that but i do have videos on that on the channel if you guys want to check them out i have tons of videos on how to make like your microphone sound good um how to make you you're able to monitor your microphone in your headphones so that you can hear what your voice sounds like we can eq your voice uh basically give you like a nice uh like radio broadcasting sound to your voice uh you know that's that's super nice people like good quality stuff but anyways guys that's really it that's the basics those are all the settings you're going to need to get started those are the basics of making some scenes and sources if you guys want a little bit more in-depth stuff uh you can just check out any video on my youtube channel i have i think this is act this is my hundredth video so that's pretty cool this is the 100th video on the channel but we have at least 50 videos on obs and audio and video and how to get the right settings that you want for specific things uh so definitely check out more videos on the channel if you guys want to dive a little bit deeper into obs but this is just a full guide on how to get started so that people can start streaming or start recording or whatever it is that they want to do so if you guys like this video please hit that thumbs up it really does help me out a lot and subscribe to the channel turn on those post notifications so you don't miss next time we post a video and if you guys want to hang out with me on my live stream i stream on twitch at twitch.tv hammerdance so go follow me on there but anyways guys that's all from me i want you to keep those hammers up and i'll see you next time [Music] is [Music]
