Tune up your old planes on David's Tool Tuning Course

I wanted to show you that it's perfectly possible to tune up early Stanley planes providing of course that nothing critical is broken this rather nice one here this is the number five it's a type 16 and it's from between 1933 and 1942 show you how it was working I'm of course copying my friend mr. Cosmin with this little demonstration but I do rather love it so that's that one we have I think once tuned up a plane from before 1904 somebody here's a bit of curly maple and this little plane is even older it's a type 11 from 1910 to 8 1918 now I don't normally recommend number threes but I've got it to work as perfectly as any of the others just think round about the time of the first world war my favorite plane is a 1970s Stanley and this was just about the period in the UK when the quality was beginning to go downhill rather badly but realizing that it needed work led me to explore everything that I possibly could by plane tuning it now works very well indeed now this is a piece of you which is a notoriously difficult wood and if I used my favorite bench plane it would tear it to pieces now I've done something rather special to the blade in the Lea Neilson number five I've put on a twenty five degree back bevel and that is going to allow it to produce a perfect finish on this exceptionally difficult wood it's not the only way of smoothing this stuff but it's a good one and that that is immaculate now finally I wanted to show you a little bit of work with my block plane by sixty and a half because many people have never seen in grain shavings before my favorite demo shows is to use the block plane I'm putting a tiny bevel here to stop it splitting and this should take lovely shavings off the end grain and I use a slightly cambered blade so that I can control squareness [Music]
