nice [Music] here [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] is so okay is foreign [Music] my turn [Music] orimos [Music] now a reading from the book of deuteronomy moses spoke to the people saying the priest shall receive the basket from you and shall set it in front of the altar of the lord your god then you shall declare before the lord your god my father was a wandering aramian who went down to egypt with a small household and lived there as an alien but there he became a nation great strong and numerous when the egyptians maltreated and oppressed us imposing hard labor upon us we cried to the lord the god of our fathers and he heard our cry and saw our affliction our toil and our oppression he brought us out of egypt with his strong hand an outstretched arm with terrifying power with signs and wonders and bringing us into this country he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey therefore i have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you o lord have given me and having set them before the lord your god you shall bow down in his presence verbum domini be with me lord when i am in trouble you who you who dwell in the shelter of the most high who abide in the shadow of the almighty say to the lord my refuge and fortress my god in whom i trust no evil shall befall you nor shall affliction come near your tent for to his angels he has given command about you that they guard you in all your ways upon their hands they shall bear you up lest you dash your foot against a stone you shall tread upon the asp in the viper and shall trample down the lion and the dragon because he clings to me i will deliver him i will set him on high because he acknowledges my name he shall call upon me and i will answer him i will be with him in distress i will deliver him and glorify him [Music] a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters what does scripture say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart that is the word of faith that we preach for if you confess with your mouth that jesus is lord and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved for one believes with the heart and so is justified and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved for the scripture says no one who believes in him will be put to shame for there is no distinction between jew and greek the same lord is lord of all enriching all who call upon him for everyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved verbum domini one does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of god the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke filled with the holy spirit jesus returned from the jordan and was led by the spirit into the desert for forty days to be tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those forty days and when they were over he was hungry the devil said to him if you are the son of god command the stone to become bread jesus answered him it is written one does not live on bread alone then he took him up and showed him a single showed them all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant the devil said to him i shall give to you all this power and glory for it has been handed over to me and i may give it to whomever i wish all this will be yours if you worship me but jesus said to him in reply it is written you shall worship the lord your god and him alone shall you serve then he led him to jerusalem made him stand in the parapet of the temple and said to him if you are the son of god throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and with their hands they will support you lest you dash your foot against a stone but jesus said to him in reply it also says you shall not put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time verbum domini just a couple announcements this morning our annual luncheon the son of the holy spirit amen there are only three ways in which we can be tempted and those three ways are shown in today's gospel but in order to understand this dialogue between our lord and between the enemy we have to go back to the beginning of creation if we go back to the garden of eden where things were good and there was paradise we can understand what the enemy has not changed his tactics since then if we see the great paradise that we have there we see that in genesis 3 16 the woman was tempted i'm going to read that to you so when the women saw that the tree was good for food a delight for the eyes and desire to make one wise she took of its fruit and ate and she also gave some to her husband and he ate one it was good for food two it was a delight to the eyes and three desire to make one wise those three temptations that the serpent used in the garden are the same temptations that every single one of us encounter they are also the three temptations that our lord conquered in the desert as we begin this holy season of lent we can take great hope that there may be a problem which wasn't which was incurred at the beginning of creation but that problem has a remedy has a solution which we can take through our lord let's go through the gospel exploring each one of these each one of these temptations before i explore the gospel we should remember that the lenten remedy the church gives us of prayer fasting and almsgiving is exactly the answer to these temptations that we encounter so let's start with the first one the lust of the flesh that the woman saw that it was good for food first the devil wanted our lord to break his fast and turn the rocks into bread is obviously the lust of the flesh we fast to defeat the lust of the flesh if you fall prey to the deadly sin of gluttony fast from food if you fall prey to the deadly sin of sloth fast from sleep or idleness or entertainment break the chains of all that binds you so that you are entirely dependent on christ alone it is those things that are we want to consume ourselves that are the things of the lust of the flesh so the enemy says to our lord if you are the son of god command these stones to become loaves of bread the enemy is saying to our lord while he carries our flesh and our lord is in human flesh but our lord overcomes us by responding it is written man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of god we must break the chains of those things that bind us the lust of the flesh i think of the beautiful words of the famous marian hymn ave mari stella there's a line in there solve a vincla raise break the chains that bind us to things and so we have the solution already for that first temptation fasting the first of the three legged stool the church gives us a lent second the lust of the eyes and the woman saw that the tree was a delight to the eyes finally the devil offers to give jesus all the kingdoms of the world he says shows him all the great things the glory of all the nice looking things of the kingdom contained we experience the lust of the eyes any anytime we are dazzled by sights like money treasure our image in a mirror looking at pornography lust vanity these are all things which are a delight to the eyes and the enemy has a hole in that when there are chains that we must break and so what is our lord respond our lord responds to the serpent although responds in the desert you shall worship the lord your god alone and him alone you shall serve when we are caught in the delight of the eyes of lust of the eyes it's because we have made idols of things we have made idols of things that are pleasing to us this is why we practice almsgiving this is the second remedy the church gives us we give away money to the poor because giving away money teaches us not to worship it to help those in need whatever it is you worship practice giving it away if it's money give it away if it's nice clothes give them to charity clothe the poor person if it's electronics turn them off whatever it is whatever it is what you're worshiping we have to counter him alone you will serve almsgiving those are the first two and the third the most insidious and the hardest to name at times is of course the pride of life what did the woman say when the women saw the tree was desired to make one wise she took its fruit and ate the tree of knowledge of good and evil the serpent tempts adam and eve by saying he has only told you not to eat of this tree because you shall become like gods isn't that that insidious temptation we all have that we are totally in charge of her life you shall be like gods and so we go back to the gospel the devil brings our lord to the parent of the temple in jerusalem saying you are the son of god angels would come and save you in this temptation satan wanted him to exploit his status as god's son he wanted jesus to flaunt his divine authority and that is the pride of life if you are the son of god throw yourself down for he will give his angels charge of you and on their hands they will bear you up but what is our lord's response again it is written you shall not tempt the lord your god meaning there is one god and we are not it isn't that the temptation we experience to make ourselves like god so what is the remedy the church gives us we've already covered fasting almsgiving prayer is the remedy that says you are god and i am not because you are god i want to do your will the pride of life is the desire to make one wise this is when we desire to be wiser than we can in short we want to be god ourselves instead of bowing to the one true god we pray to humble ourself before god and hear god's wisdom not desire our own when we pray we acknowledge the greatness of god and our dependence on him that helps keeps us humble so you've seen the enemy's tactics have not changed since the beginning of creation and we see the great remedy the church gives us and we also see the way that our lord has conquered those temptations a final consideration this lenten journey in practicing prayer fasting and almsgiving it is not on your merits and graces alone each one of us are part of the mystical body of christ meaning we are united with christ in his body christ the head has already conquered these temptations we do not do this alone saint augustine tells us in christ you were tempted for christ receive his flesh from your nature but by his power he gained salvation for you christ suffered temptation in your nature but by his power he gained victory for you this lent if we join ourselves to christ who bears our flesh who was tempted in our flesh if we join ourselves to him we can be sure victory because he has already won that victory let us employ the remedy he has given us that we can respond with the truth of the matter that we are not god that we do not live on bread alone that we should worship god alone it is those three great tools the church gives us prayer fasting and almsgiving in union with christ that allows us to conquer sin that allows us to rise victorious with christ that we can say with saint paul i no longer live but christ lives in me in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit [Music] [Music] [Applause] nicotine bactorum chelya tere visibilium omnium invisabilium adenonum dominomiaes
