hi welcome to japan by food i'm your host shizuka anderson today we'll be exploring tsukiji fish market the tsukiji fish market actually opened in 1935 and was once the largest wholesale fish market in all of japan unfortunately in 2018 the inner fish market and the famous tuna fish auction moved to toyosu so you can't see that here anymore but luckily there's still about 300 amazing shops and restaurants here so you can still enjoy your fresh seafood and i'm very happy to announce that i have a special guest today hi guys my name is elena vambino i'm shivka's friend also a tv reporter and tv personality here in tokyo nice to meet you yay thanks for coming today thank you for having me so excited to explore with you me too have you ever visited um tsukiji before only during the night so i feel like it's a lot different during the day because like that matsuri feel where there's like a lot of shots out here totally it is completely different in the morning versus the afternoon it's actually best to explore during the daytime in the morning but let's go see what amazing street food we can find and hopefully some seafood bowls let's go check it out [Music] since the fish market was here since 1935 i think some of this is really historical so you just put your chopsticks on top like this maybe it's like this oh so many different kinds of knives here that's amazing you can get your own customized knife [Music] they all look so good it's hard to choose okay i'm gonna try the salmon wasabi i'm gonna get the miso okay let's do it okay we got it and um it was mislabeled so i changed my rice ball choice to a grilled cheese rice ball it's interesting very interesting so let's give it a try mine seems to be grilled in soy sauce which is common for yaki onigiri grilled rice balls those are all grilled too lightly grilled what does it taste like it's not like the normal miso it's like a little bit more sweeter and then the grilled rice balls so it it matches really well this is also surprisingly very good if you can see on the inside it's actually filled with cheese so let's move on to our next stop [Music] um [Music] foreign he said that all of these shops with the shutters down actually are closed for good man it breaks my heart i know because this place used to be so bustling there were so many people yeah from around the world right now so we really need more um tourists to come back is like a is a traditional japanese rolled egg i guess you could put it so basically it's like an omelette that they roll up it's delicious okay we've got our egg rolls tamagoyaki and they come in these cute little boxes all right let's try first of all the it's the plain one but this is the most classic oh that's so good it's sweet um and maybe if you've never tried tamagoyaki before you might be surprised that it's sweet but that's a common flavoring in japanese tamagoyaki this is the standard classic tamagoyaki but it has to be good and you know it's good because they've been around for 90 years it's very impressive and there's not many companies that can say that they've been around for close to 100 years next up jojo you can see little bits of shrimp in there i feel like the sweet it's about the same amount of sweetness but there's more of like um a broth flavor to this one this is great and the the shrimp taste isn't overpowering like some um good balance it's a great balance very good balance [Music] so we're now in the seafood donburi restaurant yes these look so amazing what do you want to order well they all look really good i'm a fan of salmon eggs but since in this menu we see a buddy usually we translate it as seared so it's like a seared seafood bowl so it's not all completely raw they actually use a blowtorch to sear the top usually i'm going to try it i want to try that one hey this looks incredible oh it looks so good oh my goodness ah that looks so good oh and it's just so delicate it's already starting to break when i pick it up [Music] that is so so so good it's so different because i've never tried seared uni and i like this regular than the raw tuna oh then the raw onions yes sorry the raw chili let's try the uni as well it doesn't have that raw taste maybe that's why i can eat it so but the searedness it gives it a little bit of like a smoky taste to it so that makes it kind of enjoyable and it goes so well with rice of course and this isn't just like regular rice like vinegar rice it's sushi rice let me try the scallop oh my gosh it just like it's so soft is it different than the normal one well it's like a grilled scallop so i think some of you may have had grilled scallops before but it really like it gets so soft and it just like falls apart in your mouth the moment you take a bite so good what did you think of this it was very delicious it wasn't something that i would normally order so it was very interesting to eat a whole a burrito yeah it's so rare um i've literally never seen a whole seafood bowl that was seared before so if if this is something that you want to try this might be a good restaurant to check out but of course the most common seafood bowls are all raw so that's also a great one to try maybe maybe you can get one of each that's a great idea that's a great idea we're saving our stomach today because we we've tried a lot of food today [Music] all right take a look this looks amazing our first bite of fresh fresh sashimi i'm gonna dip this get some soy sauce on there okay this one already has some okay you've got there you've got ginger on there it's a little hard to eat social media on the street not gonna lies wow that's raw fish but it like almost melts in your mouth it does you don't really have to chew it no like one bite and it kind of starts to dissolve and the ginger gives it like an extra kick it does it does and it's not as sharp as wasabi of course so it's a little bit easier to eat but it matches very well great combination of flavors would you do this again definitely yeah it's probably pretty filling too it really is i'm actually gonna take another bite [Music] this is actually a different shape than is what is traditional taiyaki is another type of fish and this is a tuna one very rare i've never heard of it before and it looks like they have ice cream i could yeah i could use some ice cream actually let's do it okay so one of these and one of those i like that little twist on it it's a very nice tsukiji flair it has like a stamp that says tsukiji oh in japanese japanese tsukiji oh it's also tuna shaped is it it's a tuna okay well this looks adorable let's give it a try oh it's so hot mine is the cold one hot and cold mine is so cold there's a layer of red bean and the rest is much ice cream it's like a pancake on the outside and the inside's like filled with red bean and a lot of red bean the red bean paste it's a very traditional japanese dessert flavor and the matcha of course is another traditional flavor and the combination it goes so well alrighty so that was our day at tsukiji fish market what did you think i loved it it was so enjoyable it was it was surprisingly like there was so much here and lots of food that i'd never even eaten before yeah and shops that i didn't expect to see exactly like bakeries or you know what not and lots of desserts as well so this was a really fun day and i would love to come back and do this again and i totally recommend you guys to come here to visit if you love food because this is kind of foodie paradise essentially um but yeah i hope you guys enjoyed our video today uh please leave some comments down below let us know what you wanted to try and we'll see you guys in the next video thank you so much thank you bye
