blindly following what is perceived to be a popular opinion what toxic behavior has been normalized by society the expectation that employees should be constantly reachable even outside of work hours or during paid or unpaid time off it effectively creates a situation where you are on call 24 7. in general overworking is so romanticized in tv or movies it paints being dedicated to your job as a quirk and late nights in the offices full of comradely the reality is you're not having beers and pizzas with your buds having genius moments of clarity you're under fluorescent lights mostly alone in an office building at 11 p.m you are exhausted stressed and missing out on time with your loved ones for a place that sees you as just another number ghosting people whether it's for job interviews dating hanging out or anything i think tech has made it way too convenient to verbally agree to something or commit but flake out just because you don't feel like following through i wish more people were more direct i had an interview last year i thought went really well interviewer seems super excited and tells me he wants to bring me back and meet the team i'll be working with and he's going to be on vacation for a few days but he'll set it up when he gets back the day after he says he's gonna be back i get nothing no response to an email or phone call either like what the hell dude that isn't even talking about the dozens of applications sent out that never get anything if i have to spend an hour filling out all your bs that's on my resume i could at least get a form letter telling me when the position is closed severe confirmation bias bubble building it's already easy enough to filter out anything you don't want to see online and now all these new algorithms keep feeding you the same stuff so everyone's social media is becoming their own private echo chamber the media is a bubble and corporations put a lot of money and effort into framing an agenda for more reasons than i can explain if you get outside that bubble more often you'll be relieved to find that the world is still a very wonderful place and that most people aren't so agenda driven just remember that we're all humans at the end of the day we're all here for the same reason at the same time lately discussing things is becoming toxic because it's not about the ideas and what is true and what is false it's about who is right and who can win an argument of course people don't want to change their mind if you keep insulting them or aggressively telling them they're wrong when has that ever worked the only thing they'll do is double down on it out of pride editing photos for social media to a point where the picture doesn't even look like you anymore filters have definitely turned into a long-term curse first the enemy was the fashion industry in hollywood but now you can do the very same tactics they do with an app i've heard of plastic surgeons who are having more and more patience coming in with snapchat selfies as their desired look it's really disheartening especially for the upcoming generation i started following one of those before and after photoshop accounts on instagram that compare celebrity photos with their original media image it's incredible the level of manipulation that is considered normal now especially with celebrity kids who the hell photoshopped small children to look more physically appealing smoother skin bigger bites the sort of thing that is questionable even on a grown adult so gross treating workers like second-class citizens especially all my brothers and sisters in retail i stopped taking it i have worked at my job long enough and i am reliable enough to tell customers to f off when they get snappy with me it sucks that my other brothers in arms don't get that same luxury but i am glad i do and i will always fight for any employee there's this really weird toxic shaming of poor people and people in are paying jobs here in the us for some reason honestly i think it goes back to the whole american dream thing of pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and making something of yourself it's like people have this image of anyone working less glorious jobs as dumb or lazy when that just isn't the case posting photos and videos of kids being pranked or humiliated in the hopes it'll go viral using your kids to shore up your own online presence in any way besides sharing updates with close friends and family example that mommy blogger who refused to stop writing about her daughter even when the daughter directly asked her not to the kids have no say in how their images and lives are being used it violates their privacy and opens them up to further humiliation later on in life yet it keeps happening blindly following what is perceived to be a popular opinion people don't think for themselves near as much as they should there is no harm in taking a minute to research the accuracy of something before stating your opinion on it this is survival behavior that's been entrenched into our society since our species emerged historically speaking if you aired an opinion or belief that went against the prevailing opinion of the times or whatever your government church or ruler believed you'd probably be shunned by friends society and potentially imprisoned jailed exiled tortured murdered sacrificed etc with that in mind our ancestors quickly learned to either keep their true opinions to themselves or just to parrot the prevailing opinion nowadays we shouldn't need to count out of the prevailing opinion of the times but we still do because there's only a few countries in the world that protect free speech and even if you're fortunate enough to live in one of those countries you don't want to lose your job by disagreeing with your boss or your status within whatever society you belong to by saying something unpopular online dragging for brownie points when you have people who genuinely don't understand something and are asking questions out of curiosity people especially with some kind of following on social media would rather publicly drag that person for not knowing instead of educating them how do you expect those especially kids growing up to understand the ins and outs of a certain community for example if you drag them immediately for not understanding the culture and the issues they face but dragging gets more attention and does better numbers so let's do that nobody is born with all the information we have to learn from somewhere or someone casual waste the a i'm just gonna toss it mentality there are many things you never needed to use in the first place and many trash items that can be donated or recycled i used to work at an expensive supermarket that catered to upper middle class people we would throw out garbage cans full of perfectly edible produce apples with a slight mark on it trash it strawberry that doesn't look right trash it most of the time our manager would let us buy it for super super cheap but by the end of the month i would have more fruit that i could ever eat shame we couldn't have donated it or anything parents that let their kids run around like crazy in a restaurant like they are the only ones there i work in a grocery store and i was terrified one day that a woman was going to chew me out and report me when i reached down and spun the bagging carousel and slammed her kid right in the face with one of the metal racks i had already told the kid as politely as possible to watch out at least three times this time i wasn't looking reached down to spin it to the next empty bag and wham kid starts screaming holding his face and then looking at mommy i'm standing there horrified and in terror and she just arched the brow and said and that is why the nice lady told you three times to watch out stand over here people willingly sacrifice all aspects of their privacy for irrelevant and anonymous attention human trash becoming the standard of famous youtube celebrities my own theory why all this is happening is a combination of one globalization which makes the individual more and more irrelevant and just an insignificant number among billions of other numbers thus creating the demand for extreme actions to create at least a bit of attention for a short moment and of course too the technological possibility for everyone to broadcast anything to the entire world this is a deadly and self-destructive combination for humans since we and our brains are wired to function in small tribes in competition with other tribes with specific roles and our brains couldn't keep up with everything that happened in the last century thus people are becoming either depressed or just crazy being habitually late and pretending it's a cute work it isn't it's incredibly disrespectful and self-absorbed all you're doing is letting people know that their time is not important to you time is one of the most precious things we all possess don't waste other people's time i am not referring to running five to ten minutes late here and there who among us hasn't gotten caught in unexpected traffic even when we budgeted time for it no i'm talking about the people in my life who seem consistently incapable of showing up until after a half hour to a full hour after an agreed upon meeting time i'm also highly aware that there are distinct differences between cultures when it comes to attitudes toward time so i should explain that the people in my life who have been guilty of this are from my own culture i'm responding to an issue in the society of my own worldview so it's not all encompassing your salty responses about my 10 minutes not being that precious are false every single minute is precious and also relevant if you feel defensive about my comment you need to work on your time management skills cancel culture i'm sorry but deciding everything is over for someone because of an obscure tweet they sent out a decade ago is just foolish and undermines the importance of character development obviously some things are unforgivable however i think a lot of things are blown out of proportion and people would rather ruin someone's career than allow them to grow nobody stays the same throughout their whole life as a person ages their personality and thought processes grow consequently everybody is going to experience times in life when their opinions or thought processes on a particular subject will be temporarily contradictory or appear hypocritical part of personal growth involves comparing and working through those contradictions and coming to a resolution of them i can remember a time in my life it took me about 10 years when the concept of same-sex marriage made me very uncomfortable on an intellectual level i realized and understood that there are good reasons why gay couples should be able to form legal lifelong partnerships that have the same status in law as heterosexual marriage but on an emotional level i felt like advocates of same-sex marriage were trying to take away something that should exclusively belong to heterosexual people because that's how most children are brought into the world eventually i came to terms with the contradiction and now realize and accept that same-sex marriage makes perfect sense for many reasons and on many levels but i freely admit for a long time i was a bit of a hypocrite on it socrates was an a-hole he deliberately sought out people who held contradictory opinions in his search for truth in the world and held them up to ridicule while ignoring the possibility that maybe those people hadn't yet resolved their opinions feelings or ideas about a given topic that's like holding up an adolescent to ridicule because they are still going through puberty no wonder people hated him this whole notion of being okay with obesity i understand it's one thing to be confident in yourself but one shouldn't be completely oblivious to the fact that there are potential fatal health complications that come with being heavily overweight now there are those with medical conditions such as pcos that cause the body to go through abnormal conditions and in some cases it can't be helped the people that fall into that category i'm not talking about and may the best come from their endeavors i'm talking about those who constantly binge eat and drink alcohol every night they go out and avoid exercise because of an assumption that everyone that works out at a gym is judgmental or something sure it's completely up to you to live as unhealthy as you want but don't believe for a second that what you're doing should be promoted or that that type of habit is okay i don't know man it's weird because now that a large chunk of the population is obese it seems like it's normal to be obese i myself am a husky guy i have my moments where i let the hell out of my mom's dinner because i can't help how good she cooks but i try to do everything in moderation and be consistent in cardio and calisthenics because it can have serious side effects in me later in life the culture of wanting to be dumb i see highly intelligent students get taken down because they have a reputation with kids who don't care about being educated you read nerd i teach at an extremely low income high school i don't have any of the higher level students i see it every day i used reading because it's what i teach these kids ridicule the kids that try i have heard them use the term tryhard in a negative context when anyone shows interest in the subject it is called anti-intellectualism i know a lot of people who are smart or have the potential to be smarter and simply don't want to be because of how it could be perceived society allowing minimum wage to fall below the cost of living we're literally setting hard-working neighbors up for lives of anxiety and suffering similarly people saying that it's the person's own fault for taking a poorly paid job say a server at a restaurant they're basically implying that everyone in that profession should go get a higher paying job yet they would also be outraged if they suddenly had to self-serve at restaurants because everyone in that profession left for higher paying jobs it's basically demanding that other people live bad lives for your convenience far too many people are willing to blame others for group problems way too fast whether it is entirely someone else's fault or the blame is shared within the group it seems like the majority of people will find the first opportunity to place the blame on someone else i've probably done this way too often as well but i think as society we need to learn that it's often more productive to take the blame and move on an excuse i hear for people not doing this is that we need to hold other people accountable but this is often taken too far and turns into a finger-pointing competition placing pressure on young people into getting a college education and believing that's the best path to take in life they don't take into account the possibilities in pursuing happiness and what they believe they should do but rather something that will help society or their future financial position it's really sad actually because i know a mate that's depressed because his parents keep pushing him into doing a degree that he doesn't want to i think the way we deal with death as a society is toxic it's such an uncomfortable thing to talk about and most people have a hard time just being there for a friend who had lost someone my wife died five months ago and while losing her has been so hard having people just stop talking to me sucks these are people i have known for years just up in vanish the messed up thing is before my wife died i cannot honestly tell you i wouldn't be doing the same thing to a friend who has had a loss this great we see those who are grieving and we just do not know what to do we wish there was something you can say other than empty platitudes but that's all we can come up with grief is not something that goes away in a week so seeing someone suffer day in and day out for months is hard i honestly don't have any resentment to those who abandoned me because we as a society have made death such a taboo thing we have completely neutered any coping mechanisms for it even me in the midst of my grief can hear a voice inside of my head oh my god you are going to pull over and cry again just because you heard tiger lily by larue and it reminds you of her get over yourself and stop being so dramatic this voice is a manifestation of years of conditioning to hide away your pain because despite how pious you are you are conditioned to see those in the midst of grieving is less than you see someone whose life has been torn apart and you see them as a leper almost afraid of death being a contagion thanks for listening
