[Applause] [Music] welcome to the empowering word I'm pastor Ken Brown I know God has an empowering word for you today this message is one of my favorites it's it just there's something about the depth of the scripture and sometimes we don't always see it when we just read it straight forward there is so much history and context and life that is lived out in these texts and I'm just I'm excited to share this with you today I know it's going to be revolutionary I know it's going to change the way you see the person of Jesus how you see him in his healing acts and how you see the the culture of the bible come to life in your daily life so today I want to kind of go back to a very familiar story found in Luke chapter 8 the Gospel of Luke and it's it's pretty famous a lot of people know it it's a it talks about the woman with the issue of blood so we're going to jump into this text and and then we're going to see where the Holy Spirit leads us through this process so Luke chapter 8 starting in just around verse 42 as Jesus was on his way the crowds almost crushed him and a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years but no one could heal her she came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak and immediately her bleeding stopped who touched me Jesus asked when they all denied it Peter said master rabbi the people are crowding and pressing against you but jesus said someone touched me I know that power has gone out from me then the woman seeing that she could not go unnoticed came trembling and fell at his feet in the presence of all the people she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed then he said to her daughter your faith has healed you go in peace now you have to imagine I mean Jesus was doing some mighty works people were getting healed people were getting set free people were getting delivered demons were being cast out and and Jesus literally everywhere he went everyone that came to him was healed everyone that came to him was set free the kingdom of God was literally at hand and and you know rightly so people were coming out of every woodwork known to man to just be in his presence so here Jesus is on his way he's teaching he's he's going about his about his father's business and the crowds are crushing in on him and this woman who is in the crowd who is a part of this gathering this woman who has an issue of blood now now the the that's that's old King James they an issue of blood here in the the New International Version that says that she had she was subject to bleeding this woman literally was hemorrhaging she was in a constant state of bleeding she had some kind of uterine problems some kind of issue that that had caused her for 12 years to bleed in in Mark's Gospel it talks about the fact that she had spent all that she had on physicians and no one could heal her that's that's a desperate situation as a matter of fact if we if we read the the Mosaic law if we if we recognize she was number one ceremonially unclean because of issue of blood anytime a woman was menstruating she was perceived by the law as being unclean she was unable to go and practice worship in the synagogue she literally could not touch anyone else because if she did she would make them unclean so for her to show up in this crowd I mean talk about taking a risk I mean talking about people just just looking down upon her and you know Jesus was so radical in so many ways I mean no here's the guy that basically would go and touch the leper that would make him ceremonially unclean but but jesus is is the Messiah Jesus is the the the the Lamb of God who has come to take away the sins of the world he literally forgave people he touched that which was unclean he brought life and he spoke the very word of God why is that because Jesus is the Living Word of God he is the Living Word he is the word incarnate so she basically goes into this thing and she pushes through the crowd and we've heard this we've heard this probably for most of our lives she touched that the hem of her garment her her faith was so intense that she says you know in one of the other Gospels she says if I can just but touch that the hem of his robe I know I will be healed well that's that's powerful that is a powerful statement of faith and we see that she's immediately healed and Jesus says that your faith has made you well go in peace now today I want to kind of talk a little bit go a little deeper go a little bit beyond just what we see in just our English translation and one of the things that we see here is that this idea that when she came to touch the hem of His garment now I want to I want to kind of back up and begin to kind of talk a little a bit about rabbinical tradition and the time in which Jesus was living Jesus was a rabbi Jesus was a law-abiding Jew as a matter of fact Matthew talks about the fact that Jesus says I have come to do the will of my father I have come not to abolish the law and the prophets but to fulfill the law and the prophets Jesus is literally walking in the fullness of of every law that God has placed as a matter of fact it says that before God he is sinless that Jesus held to the law every jot and tittle every single piece Jesus was able to actually accomplish he's the only one he's the only one friends I got to tell you I can't follow the law in perfection only Jesus was only Jesus was able to do this well what's interesting here is that as a rabbi as someone that was following the the Levitical law he would have been wearing a cloak or some kind of a poncho Kyte type of garment that had special fringes to it so I kind of want to talk about this a little bit so we're gonna turn in our Bibles to numbers chapter 15 and I want to read something to you now here it basically says God is speaking to Moses as Moses is giving well he says to Moses the Lord said to Moses speak to the Israelites and say to them throughout the generations to come you were to make tassels on the corners of your garments with a blue cord on each tassel you will have these tassels to look at so that you will remember all the commandments of the Lord that you may obey them and not prostitute yourself by chasing after the lusts of your own hearts and eyes then you will remember and obey my commands and will be consecrated to your God for I am the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt to be your guy I am the Lord your God now what God is basically saying is is that for for the Israelites they were called they were chosen they were his people they were to set themselves apart and they were to set themselves apart not only in their actions and in their liturgical setting or in their worship styles but also in their dress and he basically commands that the that the people of God would would attach fringe to their clothing and specifically he uses this idea on the corners of the garments he uses this word seat seat now this is a Hebraic word and it basically is this word that we've now translated into tassel now the seat seat are very interesting and and I brought with me today this is a modern prayer shawl this is a tallit this is the this is a garment that has this fringe upon it and as I kind of a kind of open it here you can kind of see the dynamic of the fringe at the bottom of the garment and here at the at the four corners of the garment you see these these tassels the seat seat and and these seat seat what's what's fascinating about them is that you'll notice there's specific knots in the dynamic here is that you basically have in the five knots these represent the the the five books of the Torah the five books of the law of the first five books of the Bible this is the law that God gave in the same way there are wrappings there are four sets of wrappings here in the between the knots and in those wrappings we see the numerological equivalent of the Shema that we see the name Yahweh and then the Akkad that he is one that the Deuteronomy 6:4 hear o Israel the Lord our God the Lord is one and then we basically see the dynamic here that there are eight strings there are five knots that equals the number thirteen then the name seat seat in the Hebrew the numerological equivalent adds up to the number 600 why is that important the fact of the matter is is that the the 613 equal the exact same amount of laws that were given in the Mosaic law there are the 365 prohibitions the thou shalt nots and then there are the 248 affirmations the thou shouts that are written in the Mosaic law and this is represented in this very tassel this very seat seat as a matter of fact one of these traditionally and this is the idea that that thread of blue one of these threads would have been the Tekel it would have been dyed blue and it would have wound its way through these knots this is the representation of the law and this is what he's basically saying he says command the Israelites to put these tassels to put these seats seat on the four corners of their garments that when they would walk that they would literally be walking as these would touch the ground they would be walking in the Word of God that they would be feeling these upon themselves as they brush their their clothing that they would always be reminded of the commands of God that they might walk in the commands of God and so here that and in jesus's day he would have been wearing a garment that would have would have had these seats these these tassels upon them so so because he was a rabbinical Juby cuz he walked in the fullness of the law so he was doing exactly what had been commanded to Moses so this is the very point of contact that this woman with the issue of blood went after she went after the fringe of His garment well that's pretty fascinating but why do you think that is I mean she could have touched any part she could have but but she specifically says if I but touch the him the seat seat the fringe of His garment I know I will be healed I know I will be healed well I believe that the the understanding because again she as as any other Jew of that day would would have been a part of the synagogue from birth she would have been given pages of the torah with honey on them to lick that she would have known the tourists she would have known the prophets she would have known the Word of God she would have known the scrolls as they would have been unfolded and there's a verse in the Prophet Malachi in his writing in the scroll of Malachi it says in chapter 4 of Malachi in verse 2 it says but for you who revere my name the Sun of righteousness will rise with healing in his wings and you will go out and frolic like a well-fed calf this word for wings seat seat this word for wings this verse in Malachi chapter 4 is a messianic prophecy it prophesized about the coming Messiah it prophesized about those that will find the Living righteousness of God that the Sun of righteousness will rise with healing in his wings now here's a woman I want to take you back to this to this example here's a woman that is desperate she has run out of options she is heard of the fame of Jesus the teacher from Nazareth from Nazareth she is heard of his fame she has she has heard that that there are people being healed that there are people being set free she has heard rumors that this might be the Messiah the the savior that the the the Christ she has heard the rumors and she knows this scripture and she laid hold of the Word of God she laid hold of this word that the Sun of righteousness will rise with healing in his wings and she took hold of this word this written word and she came up and pressed through the crowd she pressed through the cry that making them ceremonially unclean and it didn't matter to her it didn't matter to her she pressed through knowing that if this was the Messiah if this was truly the Son of God if this was truly the the promised Savior of all mankind that truly in his seat seat in the wings of his garment would be healing friends I want to tell you today this very tassel representing the law of God walking in the Torah walking in the very word of God that the only person that ever wore these that ever fulfilled it was the son of righteousness was the person of Jesus was the person of the Christ imagine him walking the streets of Jerusalem walking the streets of Judea walking in the word him the Incarnate Word the Word of God made flesh when she reached out laying hold of the written word of God relating hold of this this ancient prophecy four hundred years earlier of Malachi which he laid hold of the Word of God she laid hold of this tassel that was connected to the Living Word of God she laid hold of the Word of God by faith and her faith made her well immediately the bleeding stopped and Jesus says power has left me he knew something happened the disciples didn't discern it the crowd didn't discern it and she stood there and realized I can no longer hide I can no longer be in the shadows I can I have something happened I laid hold of the word I laid hold of the Living Word and something happened friends today today the Jewish people still wear that seat seat it's it's contained in the in the prayer shawl these are held for ceremonial purposes as well as for morning prayers the white of the prayer shawl it represents the the the glory of the heavens in and and in this is is the covering in this as that as the as the priests and as the people of God would cover themselves in prayer their covering themselves in the very word of God their covering themselves in the presence of God it represents the Holy Spirit but we as followers of Jesus have received the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit we now walk with the covering of the Holy Spirit upon our lives that it's not a garment of outer wear it's an internal garment of the presence of the Holy Spirit that we walk in the authority of the word that he gives us softened hearts then he takes our hearts of stone and trades them for hearts of flesh that we might follow the Word of God that the Holy Spirit gives us the ability to walk in the likeness of Christ friends today friends today Jesus Jesus the Living Word is still alive he's alive and well he ascended on high and he dwells in heavenly places friends you can access that Living Word today it's in the mighty name of Jesus friends whatever your issue is today whatever you've been suffering with whatever it is that you did I'm telling you there is a word of the Lord for you today lay hold of the Word of God lay hold of the person of the word of God and recognize his Spirit is upon you even now to complete it friends you don't need to reach for the for the seat seat you don't need to reach for a tassel the fringe of his garment is right before you it's found in the very face of Jesus allow the Holy Spirit even now I believe I believe the Holy Spirit even now is ministering in your life that whatever it is that you need a touch from the Lord that he is touching that situation I ask that you would lay hold by faith God will do exactly what he promised and said he would do lay hold of it today in the name of Jesus friends I want to thank you for joining me today I know this was this is a special message there's nothing magical about this cloth there's nothing it it's it's what the cloth represents it's what the seat seat represents that this is not the law but it represents the law when we look upon it we see the Torah so when we look at upon even the written word of God the entire work of the Holy Spirit the entire work of God is to bring us into a place where we recognize Jesus where we recognize the Living Word as we read it the Holy Spirit will illuminate the person and work of Jesus Christ as we as we lay hold of this word by faith friends let that revelation come let the presence of God move upon your life let the revelation of the person of Jesus that he is the Sun of righteousness that has risen with healing in his wings that he has everything that you need friends thank you for joining me today that's all the time we have be blessed and remember to walk empowered by the word you [Music] you
