[Music] this is my 2020 silverado but we're covering today is the top five modifications for the 2019 the 2021 silverado and unfortunately two modifications i actually regret [Music] just about two years ago we bought this 2020 silverado trail boss and i've spent nearly every single weekend since then changing stuff up on it and today we're going to be going over the top five modifications i have done to my 4th gen silverado and if you are anything like me these are five things that should be at the top of your list for your silverado we're gonna start this list off for something that's absolutely critical for these trucks so guys aloha welcome back to the channel welcome back to my little piece of paradise the lowest hawaii garage if you guys are new at special aloha and welcome i'm a crazy hawaiian texan that loves cars makes a couple videos a really bad example and a self-certified youtube automotive technician don't listen to anything i really say and if you guys are new and by chance have not subscribed to the channel just yet feel free at any point in the video if you're enjoying the content scroll down hit the subscribe button below join the family join the ohana for all the fun we got a ton coming up for the trail boss and everything else in this garage now the exhaust i'm gonna do my absolute best here to talk to you guys as texas decided to be winter finally and it's freezing and windy but as you heard there the exhaust on his truck is not stuck those who have been around a while know what we did and what we did was surprisingly easy and cheap so we go back to the early days of the trail box when we first bought this truck i immediately noticed the problem and that was a complete disconnect between the driver and the vehicle can you guys even hear that she's dancing no matter what you did to this truck it was just so silent full throttle half throttle no throttle so immediately what we did is looked at a few exhaust options what's very common in today's world is a cat-back exhaust system now those typically range between 600 up to 2 000 depending on the brand you go with now i didn't want to drop a big dollar amount on this exhaust just yet so what i did was quite a bit easier there's something called an afe power muffler delete for this truck now in full transparency i think deleting a muffler and straight piping really isn't the right thing to do for an exhaust system it sounds raspy unrefined and it's just annoying now these trucks are heavily restricted out of the exhaust right after that driver's side manifold the exhaust tube is basically flat into a pancake it comes out through the rear and when it gets back to here there's six resonators there at the very end now because of that there is muffling going on outside of just the muffler so what we did we bought the afe power muffler delete deleted the muffler right here in the garage and this thing sounds glorious but one caveat with that muffler delete kit was it's not intended to delete the flapper valve yes i said flapper valve these new trucks actually come with a flapper valve in them because of the dfm or dynamic fuel management system as it's just between eight cylinders four cylinders one cylinder the exhaust tone changes quite a bit during those cycles and what they did is put a flapper valve in the exhaust which basically eliminates indie sound i have in my hand the adaptive valve that cancels out low frequencies without adding additional muffler volume they may not even notice that their engine is running so you don't hear any changes now that flapper valve on these trucks is actually a spring-loaded valve so technically you could wire it open to stay open all the time i took a different approach and just cut the sucker out all together now the afe power delete kit didn't intend to cut that far forward to delete that flapper valve so what happened was when i installed the new pipe one side sealed up real well the back side unfortunately just didn't seal up completely booger welded that thing closed and we're set to go now this truck sounds phenomenal this is a great option for you guys that are operating on a budget it has been over a year and a half and i still love it today now the next modification on the list is going to increase performance and the aesthetics of your truck for a very low cost and it has to do with lighting the reverse lights on the 19 to 21 silverados are pathetic there's no other word for it i have a really long driveway with very little lighting backing up this driveway at night is tough i upgraded my reverse lights my license plate lights and my front turn signal lights to last fit led bulbs this company i have been working with for uh three almost four years now every one of my vehicles is outfitted with their led lights they are the best and brightest in the game and it was game changing for my reverse lights the installation is very easy and straightforward a couple of screws will take out your tail lamps you simply twist and pull out your halogen filament bulbs and pop in your brand new lost fit bulbs and put the tail light assembly right back in these license plate lights are just as simple you go up underneath the bumper twist pull replace the light and pop it right back in and then all of a sudden your truck is taken to the 21st century where it began in the freaking first place now later on what we did was actually upgrade the front turn signal bulbs as well i didn't really notice how dim the turn signal bulbs we were from the factory the halogen filament bulbs similar to the rear of the truck were a little bit pathetic when you upgrade it to led it completely modernizes the front end it's extremely bright it's very visible and it's safer the led amber's in the front and the leds in the rear completely modernize this already modern truck to where it should have started in the beginning general motors the links are in description below for the lights i did install on this truck cheap easy to do plug and play the simplest of mammals can complete it they're so bright but that is number two on the list for must do led lights go figure so next up on the list i'm not sure exactly what to call it so i'm gonna chalk it up to a diy midnight edition so you can actually buy these silverados with a midnight addiction addiction midnight edition package which you pay a lot of money for but you don't really get a lot for it so i did it myself for cheap and it all started here on the front end kind of unplanned we got the truck i did a full paint correction and as i was doing it i noticed hey i really don't like the look of my badges they're really bright chrome distracting it pulls away from the gorgeous aesthetics and design so what i did i got some plasti dip and sprayed my badges now i will say this is a year and a half after i sprayed these it actually still looks pretty dang good there are parts that have kind of chipped and peeled up a little bit but that's easy build that off i can do it again or actually buy some black badges i did not only do that but i also did the front bow tie here a year and a half later got a small chip we didn't stop there we just continued on and got carried away like i get carried away everything with this truck and we did the back badges as well so the lt on this side and the silverado badge as well this is something you can easily do yourself costs four to five bucks for a can of this stuff and go to town but it didn't even stop there what i did i went on amazon and bought a big piece of dark smoke text tint when i say hex it's just a little hex pattern within the tint which i thought was kind of cool that piece of smoked out tint has gone quite a long way we've done the reflector within the front headlamp it still works like you're trying to let you see amber there but it's completely changed the whole look of that front end the install is pretty straight forward i laid some knifeless tape down where i wanted the edge to be put the tent right over the top of it pull the knifeless tape out from under it you can also use a knife if you really want to but i really advise against cutting against your headlamp with a sharp knife and then it came to the third brake lamp this one was an eyesore just looking at the red color they chose the wrong color the red color doesn't match anything else on the truck it's like a darker maroon color for the rest of them it's like a bright red regardless we got rid of it we initially covered the entire third brake light up decided that was not the best idea and instead laid some knifeless tape around where the led section is where the brake light actually shines red and covered up the red plastic so it actually gives a smoked out look while also not decreasing any functionality of that third brake light just the one little piece of dark smoke 10 from amazon.com did all of that holy schnikeys it worked on top of that the front fog lamps i also threw a little bit of smoke tint on the fog lamps just to kind of change it up a little bit covered up some of that chrome in the front those little touches ended up going a long way which i didn't realize it actually would it does make the truck look a lot better better there's got to be a better word for better cherry brah now when the smoked out tint was all done i figured i was done until i started getting comments continued comments on my trail boss sticker here at the rear so i finally listened to them and upgraded called an upgrade i just changed the sticker out this is a matte black sticker it gives me the look and feel i'm going for and it took out that massive distraction it looks a heck of a lot better now now as the list continues to modification number four and five that's where the price tag starts getting just a bit more hefty number four changed quite a bit on this truck and that is a leveling kit now a big fat word of caution if you have a trail boss or at4 do not level your truck without first replacing your upper control arms these trucks come lifted two inches from factory in doing so puts additional stress on that upper ball joint i've seen countless posts over the last few months of silverados with their wheel and tire flat on its face with a bunch of suspension components still attached to it because they're leveling their truck to the point of the upper ball joint completely failing so what we did we went to readylift and ordered their two-inch sst kit which technically is not a level it's actually a lift kit but when we lifted the front end the truck was perfectly level we actually didn't even install the lift blocks for the rear the installation of the sst kit was fairly involved the truck had to come up wheels and tires had to come off the entire front strut assembly had to come out how the kit works it has a one inch preload spacer which means you have to deconstruct the front strut add the preload spacer and reassemble everything together from there you have the additional one-inch spacer at the top you bolt back everything up and you limp it down to a local alignment shop to realign your front end so we got that all taken care of and the truck looked phenomenal we had two inches of additional height in the front and nothing in the rear but the truck was perfectly level the ride quality the front end is quite a bit stiffer the truck feels more planted it feels more secure it feels more like a truck versus a suburban now before we get into the final modification which will not surprise anyone let me tell you about two modifications i have made to this truck which might surprise you i regret that's my credo no regrets funny enough the two regrettable modifications are both in the front end of this truck the first of the two is the stillen true power cold air intake scoop we had major issues all right it's actually really frustrating when we installed this dylan system i started hearing a loud popping noise coming from the front end of the truck in the front of these trucks there's something called active aero shutters there's literally shutters in your front grille that open and close either to increase aerodynamic efficiency or cooling depending on whatever time you are driving but what i noticed was when the active aero shutters were either opening or closing they were getting caught on the stealing true power system now this system is built on the proven fact that cold air increases horsepower and efficiency how the system works it actually takes the airflow from the front of the truck and forces it into the intake duct for your intake system so in theory you would create better efficiency and more power but i will be honest the increases are negligible was it really worth the investment but don't worry those that made the investment install their own still in system as long as you do give yourself some clearance there for your active arrow shutters you guys will be okay i'm still running mine i don't have any immediate plans to pull it out but is it worth the investment unfortunately not so regret mod number two still here on the front of the truck and this might surprise a lot of you the aeroskin light shield by abs unfortunately with this one good vibration at higher speeds if you travel over 65 miles an hour on a regular basis i would say do not install this particular abs aeroscan the aesthetics of the truck is amazing having those amber lights at the top of the hood really changes the dynamic of a truck fortunately in my situation i'm on a highway probably once a month you're traveling at 65 miles an hour or more on a regular basis i would say straight away from this particular modification you will experience hood vibration as the air hits it it causes your entire hood to shake and vibrate and it's completely visible from your driver's seat and it's a little bit unnerving there's number two you guys driving on the highway probably not the right one for you now this last one's not gonna surprise anybody and it's the item with the highest price tag had the biggest impact on the truck and it's our wheels and tires now as soon as we got the truck lifted two additional inches in the front and the front end aligned we started the project of fitting 35 inch tires on this thing now what these are are nitto ridge grapplers 35 by 12 and a half these are the most popular hybrid tire on the market fun fact about the tire you actually have two different sidewall options i went with the less popular option which was the best decision i made regardless on the sidewall the tread pattern is extremely aggressive gives you that nice meaty look without a lot of road noise to be transparent the road noise on these tires is less than yeah those regardless of the road noise in order to fit these on here we had to do some trimming and tucking they're wrapped around hd pros hd one wheel gloss black on the lip mat on the front these are 20 inches by 11 inches wide they have a negative 33 offset which pushes out that tire pretty decently in order to fit these in here on the front end we had to pull out the fender liner cut the fender liner mounting bracket it's plastic sold in half pulled back the inner fender liner on the front end and we are clear on the front end the rear on the other hand took a little more convincing we pulled off the mud flap cut the mud flap in half on the inside of the fender liner was a metal bracket which doesn't serve a purpose we removed the metal bracket all together pull back the fender liner screwed it in to the frame and we essentially have a fitting 35 by 12 and a half on a two inch level trail boss these are as big as you can possibly go without significant cutting on your truck but this size of tire on this truck is perfect i have not seen one other truck i like more than my own truck on the road and that's saying something i am an enthusiast and a fan of so many builds and trucks and i look at my own and i'm so proud [Music] i'm the man i got the plan when it hits the fan do all i can do [Music] [Music] well that's it guys that's everything guys 2021 is
