dr dave here with the top 10 pull shots that amateurs play wrong along with how to play them right if you want to improve your game it is important to understand and master these shots have you ever seen amateurs do this or this if you know and understand basic cue ball control principles you should never scratch or even doubt if a scratch is possible or not here the natural angle as predicted by the 30 degree rule peace sign heads right to the pocket so you just need to make sure the cue ball isn't rolling here the 90 degree rule tangent line heads in a good direction so a stun shot is a good play here the tangent line heads straight to the pocket so a stun shot would result in a scratch but the natural angle gives a good line to the eight so you just need to roll the ball here here i need to draw for shape on the eight and a scratch is a possibility for draw shots the three times the angle system is useful it shows where the cue ball will head for a good action draw shot so close to maximum draw is a good option to come right into the line of the eight another option here is to play for this line which is about seventy percent of the way from stun to maximum draw so aiming the tip 70 as low as the maximum draw tip position gets the job done for more information about these systems see the links in the video description pocket hangers also cause problems for some amateurs sometimes they aim straight and try to slow roll it sometimes they try to hit a stop or draw shot with the same bad result with a draw shot it can be difficult to control the exact angle and amount of spin i still ended up with a shot at the 11 but i almost hooked myself here needing a shot at the eight next one option is to go rail first with soft speed but at slow speed like this you risk table roll off the best play here is to use draw and cheat the pocket a little a fairly wide range of angles speeds and spin amounts will work here here's another example where a slow roll or attempted stop or draw can be bad plays [Applause] a good stop shot will work but it is much easier just to cheat the pocket to either side there is no chance for a scratch with either of these shots have you ever seen amateurs do this a better play here is to use slower speed and accept a little tougher shot on the 8 next your stroke is more accurate at slower speed and the effective size of the pocket is much larger look how far you can be off in either direction and still pocket the ball on this table [Applause] this will obviously depend on pocket geometry and conditions but the pocket is always much bigger at slower speed at fast speed look at how much smaller the effective size of the pocket is if you need to use fast speed into a corner pocket aim as carefully as you can into the heart of the pocket and don't risk hitting the near point which can easily cause the ball to rattle instead aim closer to the opposite facing to give yourself a better chance to pocket the ball same advice applies to side pocket shots also it is best to target the far wall of the pocket with slow speed this doesn't go at fast speed again avoid the near point of the pocket have you ever seen amateurs come up short like this or go long like this here a much better play is to come off the rail the cushion kills the cue ball speed sum and gives you a much larger margin for error with speed using the cushions as breaks like this is a powerful technique and is a better option than trying to finesse the shot the same rule applies to shots like this where attempting to finesse the shot can cause trouble you might go too far [Applause] and really slow speed can throw the ball offline more than expected a much better approach here is to use more speed and come off the rail again the margin for error with speed will be much greater and you will get a truer hit on the object ball with less throw another good option here if there were no other balls on the table that might get in the way is to just draw to have a look at the 8 during the entire shot this leaves a longer shot at the 8 but there is little that can go wrong one thing amateurs often under appreciate is the power of controlling the cue ball to go to and through the center of the table it is good to practice this skill it helps to know the 45 degree rule that says if the cue ball heads into the end rail at 45 degrees it will head toward the center of the table if the cue ball comes in at a more shallow angle it comes up short of the center and that the cue ball comes in at a steeper angle it goes long of the center here's a good example showing how powerful center table position can often be from the table center i have a look at every ball on the table here's a good example where going through the center of the table is the right play here's a good example where if you are careless you can scratch [Applause] going through the center of the table is a better option here because it allows you to use a more confident stroke and there is no chance of scratching if you go through the center of the table off the end rail another way to play this shot is to go long of the table center by going into the end rail at a steeper angle [Applause] by practicing cue ball control to through and adjacent to the table center you will be a much smarter and capable player have you ever seen amateurs do this cue ball control with rail cut shots is a very important skill here a good play is to just come straight across the table with a reliable tangent line stun shot an important principle for shots like this is that with the right amount of draw and outside spin you should be able to bring the cue ball back along the line of the shot from any angle like this [Applause] another option here is just to use close to maximum draw and rely on the three times the angle system which means the cue ball will come off the rail at twice the incoming angle for more information see the link in the video description it is also sometimes important to be able to use inside follow to go forward and use spin intensifying drag per the link in the video description [Applause] another option here is just to go across the table twice allowing for more speed and the rail braking effect have you ever seen amateurs attempt a bank like this instead of cutting the ball in here the cut is much more reliable you can hit a little full or thin and still pocket the ball now with shots like this where the cut is almost impossible but the cross corner bank is fairly straight and easy the bank is the right play [Applause] the same goes for nearly straight cross side banks which should be routine for any decent player have you ever seen amateurs elevate the queue way more than they need to like this the problem with this is if you don't hit the cue ball exactly on the vertical center line the cue ball will curve slightly causing you to miss instead you should have the cue as level as possible like this now sometimes you need to elevate the cue to clear over an obstacle ball for shots like these form your stance verify your aim in the level position keep your vision center over the queue the entire time and elevate only as much as you need to clear the obstacle ball also as always keep your head body and elbow as still as possible during the shot the same technique should be used for jump shots which also require an elevated queue have you ever seen amateurs break out clusters with too much speed like this this is not a good outcome with the 7 blocking a pocket for the 11 and access to the 13 limited by the 5 and 8. when breaking out clusters you should use as little speed as possible to get a controlled and desirable outcome like this now the out should be easy have you ever seen amateurs do this attempting to follow off the end rail to go up table for the eight when the object ball is this close to the rail the topspin does not have enough distance to accelerate the cue ball and the top spin remaining on the cue ball after rebound makes it follow back to the rail if the object ball were farther away from the cushion the shot works fine with the object ball hanging in the pocket draw is an option but it can be difficult to get the right amount of backspin it can also be tough to get the angle just right i hit this one really well and i still almost came up short a much better option here is just to thin the ball depending on the size of the pocket and how deep the ball is in the pocket the pocket point might be problematic did you see how the point redirected the cue ball here if the object ball were any deeper in the pocket or more away from the point this shot would not have worked have you ever seen amateurs be clueless about knowing whether a shot is a double hit file or not all of the following shots or files since the cue ball is obviously driven forward by the double hit i am using slow motion video from an iphone to clearly show the double hit vowels [Music] with a single hit the cue ball will stop with a stop shot delay slightly before going forward with the follow shot and not go forward at all with a draw shot when the cue ball is frozen to the object ball you are allowed to hit into the cue ball since it clearly involves no push or double hit even though it might feel otherwise for more information about how to both detect and avoid double hits see the link in the video description which offers a wealth of resources on this topic well i hope you enjoyed the latest video in my top 10 series again for more information about all of the topics in this video see the links in the video description
