the Oscar losing reaction face it's something I haven't talked about very much on this channel but it is a learned skill if you go back and watch all of the different Oscar videos if you pay close attention to the people in the category who lose usually you see a bright warm smile some polite clapping nothing to write home about really but once in a while you do get a real off Oscar loss reaction face sometimes it's very big and boisterous and extremely happy other times you do see someone who clearly wanted to win and are not happy that they lost here is my top 10 list of the most memorable Oscar losing faces here we go number 10 Angela Basset Jamie Lee [Applause] now I might personally take some of the blame for this one because just a few days before the 95th Academy Awards I wrote an article for gold Derby giving the five reasons why Angela Basset was going to win best supporting actress she posted a link to my article on her Instagram page I think it was like the day before the ceremony so I think a little bit of that look of sheer disappointment was partly my fault maybe I hope not obviously she's been doing great work for decades and I thought it was time to reward Angela Basset she is so great in Black Panther wakanda forever jaam Lee Curtis is of course over the moon in her reaction but yeah that Death Stare from Basset I don't think any of us will ever forget number nine Kate Blanchet [Applause] so unlike Angela Basset here is a much happier reaction to losing an Academy Award at the 2008 ceremony she had no chance in hell of winning best actress for Elizabeth the golden age that winner came down to Julie Christie for away from her or Maran coard for Leon Rose I believe at the time Blanchet had stated in interviews how impressed she was with K's performance and so when Forest ier announces her name as the winner you see Kate Blanchet immediately respond with great enthusiasm and it happen so fast that Julie Christie's Delayed Reaction always makes me laugh number eight Bert Reynolds Robin Williams and goodwi [Applause] hunting so in his long career Bert Reynolds had one shot in winning an Academy Award it was for Boogie Knights of course for which he won the Golden Globe Award for best supporting actor he definitely had a narrative to win the Oscar that year but Robin Williams was also very much acclaimed for his performance in Goodwill Hunting he won the SAG award and Williams was on his fourth nomination so it kind of makes sense why Williams won that night but Reynolds was clearly disappointed you see it in that slow clap he gives before we go to the full shot on will Willams I'm really happy Robin Williams won an Oscar but that Reynolds performance was worthy too number seven mini driver Kim Basinger LA Confidential so the same night Bert Reynolds made his Oscar losing face mini driver did her version of losing the Oscar and best supporting actress to Kim Basinger for LA Confidential this reaction makes me chuckle because it's just so over the top Kim Basinger was very much predicted to win that night I think she won every major precursor prize Gloria Stewart had an outside chance I would say for Titanic but yeah pretty much everybody expected Basinger to win so many dri's overly shocked expression feels kind of like she's acting number six Jessica Lang I consider this woman the greatest actress in the English land language the winner is Geraldine Paige you a cryp all right Jessica Lang has had a couple memorable reaction shots throughout the years when she loses she usually doesn't look too happy it's kind of like a oh okay kind of an expression but the one I wanted to include in this video is the expression she made on the night that Geraldine pagee won best actress for the trip to Bountiful before F Murray Abraham announced ances the winner he says I consider this woman the greatest actress in the English language and then if you look at Lang before Abraham even says Geraldine Page's name she mouths Geraldine Page like she knew exactly who he was talking about Geraldine pagee was on her eighth Oscar nomination that night she had never won and it was a glorious moment I think everybody in the room wanted that to happen for her even possibly just Kang number five Glenn Close Olivia colan okay so this one hurt my heart a little bit I can't deny it I think most of us did expect Glenn Close was going to win best actress at the Oscars in early 2019 for the wife Olivia Coleman was definitely gaining steam toward the end there she won at bafta but I just did not think they were going to snub close again on on her seventh try especially after she won at Golden Globes critic's choice and sag she's wearing a gold dress that night you can tell she really wanted it and so when Francis mcdorman announces Olivia Coleman as the winner Glenn Close makes this amusing reaction that is definitely hiding her intense disappointment in the moment if you look at all of her other Oscar losing faces she's usually pretty happy and she claps and 's nothing really to write home about but this time she clearly thought she was going to win and so you can see the disappointment in that expression number four Talia Shire and the winner is Fay dway in network if you go back and look at a lot of the best actress races of the 1970s on YouTube it's kind of interesting often times these actresses don't look happy to be there it's almost like they're being forced at gunpoint to sit in the audience and wait to hear their name usually not called the reaction I think of first in the 1970s is that expression from Talia Shire who was nominated for Rocky she lost to fate dway for network and I don't even know what she's going through there she looks in some ways pissed off she looks bored she looks maybe a little bit happy that she doesn't have to get up there and give a speech but it's definitely one of the most memorable Oscar Expressions I have ever seen number three Ellen Burston Glenda [Applause] Jackson so Burston is not there in 1975 when she wins best actress for Alice doesn't live here anymore Martin scorsi the director of that film accepts the Oscar on her behalf but she is there the year before when she was nominated in actress for The Exorcist it's still not super clear to me who was the front runner of that race like who was the most predicted to win that night it definitely wasn't Glenda Jackson for A Touch of Class that came out of left field and when her name is announced as the winner you get a variety of interesting expressions like from Joanne Woodward who was clearly surprised and Ellen Burston especially who makes this wild face for a couple seconds that always makes me chuckle she was clearly not expecting Jackson's name to be read and it's not a polite clap it's not a look of disappointment it's like a oh okay huh kind of expression it is a fantastic Oscar reaction number two Sally Kirkland winner is Sher and moons now there is a long story about Sally Kirkland's Oscar nomination for Anna I might have to make a video about it sometime basically it was a very small independent film and she worked really hard behind the scenes to get that film in front of awards voters she won the Golden Globe Award for best actress in Emotion picture drama and then she got what is still to this day her only Oscar nomination apparently going into that night she very much thought she was going to win like she thought she had this in the bag so when we cut to her right before the winner is announced she has this weird nervous face that I have never been able to get out of my mind and then when Paul Newman announces Sher as the winner she has this momentary look of disappointment followed by just polite clapping like okay fine like it's kind of a mixed reaction but you can see she wanted to win and she clearly thought she was going to win all right before I get to my number one choice a few Runners up Bill Murray has a great expression when he loses best actor to Shawn Penn Jack Nicholson when he lost to Adrien Brody for The Pianist in 2003 he gives this wonderful reaction of surprise and enthusiasm Holly Hunter is another good one when she loses best supporting actress to her the piano co-star Anna pacin it is just pure joy on her face say same with River Phoenix who when he lost best supporting actor to Kevin Klein for A Fish Called Wanda he cheers in the most beautiful way the two had just worked together on a film and Eddie Murphy someone else who probably thought he was going to win best supporting actor for Dream Girls but then Rachel Vice announces Alan Arin as the winner Murphy does a little polite clapping but he's clearly pissed off and reportedly he and his date soon thereafter left the ceremony all right that takes me to my number one choice what is the most memorable Oscar losing face we've ever had in the history of the ceremony it's the one I thought of first when I started working on this video it's Samuel L Jackson Martin landow and Edward now obviously Samuel L Jackson gives one of the most memorable performances of the 1990s in Pulp Fiction that's an Oscar victory that would have lasted very well I don't take any issue with the winner that night it was Martin landow for Ed Wood that is a fantastic performance in an absolutely wonderful movie Martin Landau I think was on his third Oscar nomination that night he had never won and he was older had a much longer career Samuel L Jackson was only on his first Oscar nomination so it makes sense in retrospect why Martin landow one but Jackson wasn't having it in the moment because if you zoom in you can clearly see when Anna pacn announces Martin landow as the winner Samuel L Jackson says and it's just absolutely perfect that is the perfect Oscar loss reaction from the great Samuel L Jackson it is crazy to think the man has never received a competitive Oscar nomination since but at least we have that Academy Award nom for Pulp Fiction and that altimer Oscar loss reaction [Music]
