there has to be a wow factor he is just magical there should be something that makes us sit up and take notice i would give him the heisman if i could i want him in my football team if there is one pose in football that signals achievement it's this one everyone who's ever picked up a football has imitated the heisman trophy awarded to the nation's best college player what's up man get my trophy this countdown isn't so much about college exploits which would explain why the only two-time winner of the heisman archie griffin didn't get within sniffing distance of our list if you're looking for the top 10 heisman winners in the nfl you're talking about guys who perform with the nfl not the guys who perform in college 90 yards he has to be a difference maker when the chips are on the table he rises to the occasion 1 000 career catches for the amazing tim brown everybody from my mom to your mom to my cousin to my grandmother knows who won the heisman trophy he's somebody who gets people to want to buy the jersey immediately when you hear that he was drafted that's what the heisman trophy winner is stats are important but it takes more than just numbers to crack our countdown they got to do it with pizzazz guys get yards every week and every game we need more than that for this list the number 10 heisman winner in the nfl tim brown tim was a guy who longevity is going to speak volumes for itself his ability to return kicks early in his career his run after the catch and i think he's certainly a guy that empowered what the raiders were about in terms of a guy who had great speed and could do a lot of different things he didn't have peyton manning throwing him the football consistently tim brown played with about what 744 different quarterbacks with the raiders rolling right is tim brown played with donald hollis i mean he played with all these crazy quarterbacks that people don't even remember and he still put up numbers year after year after year and i think that's what makes tim brown so impressive he's the one who did it no matter how bad the quarterback was [Music] in 1987 notre dame's tim brown became the first wide receiver to win the heisman brown's dominance as a college wide receiver translated to the pros as he became one of the most prolific receivers in nfl history rolling into the end zone as a receiver brown is in the top 10 of three major receiving categories cuts inside breaks a tackle he can do so many things he can play outside he can play in a slot and of course he could be a returner rod's not gonna fair catch this one he's gonna go on the 11. brown also has more puck return yards than any other heisman winner in nfl history [Applause] the wide receiver as not a diva tim brown was known for a lot of things during his stellar career incredible but being flashy wasn't one of them tim brown was boring and he didn't plan a very exciting team for most of his career tim brown has the numbers he has the consistency but going in all those directions might hurt him because there's nothing that stands out i was told and i was shocked when i was told this but i was told that i was too nice but that my image was too clean and and there needed to be some dirt on me and you know and uh and that really shocked me a very professional person in how he went about his business and maybe sometimes those guys don't get as much attention but clearly from a productivity standpoint this guy was one of the best ever touchdown raiders [Applause] there were four players who won both the heisman and the super bowl mvp touchdown desmond howard it's been five years now since you won the heisman is there a super bowl mvp pose which one ran his way to number nine find out next [Music] only eight out of the nearly 300 members of the pro football hall of fame have won the heisman what dick butkus went to eight straight pro bowls and was a two-time defensive player of the year although he was one of the most intimidating linebackers of all time he came in third in the heisman vote to john huert who had an unremarkable six year run as a backup quarterback john heward is given a chance at the control his pass intended for jd garrett winds up in the arms of a talented spectator and away in 1956 jim brown was a distant fifth in the heisman ballot but the nine-time pro bowler and three-time mvp retired holding just about every important rushing record while many regard the hall of famer as the best football player of all time our number nine winner has both the hall of fame and the heisman on his resume [Music] in the nfl marcus allen's got to be higher i mean you think marcus allen usc tailback i mean everything he's accomplished let me move him up the list no guy before 1980 had ever rushed for 2 000 yards in a season in college marcus allen rushed for 2 300. allen won his heisman in 1981 and a certain california-based professional football team took notice oakland's first round selection running back marcus allen of usc al was a guy that has always liked to collect players as if they're curious if you went to a raiders practice everywhere you look there was a high school group el davis don't you love them it's great to be a raider you know why he took him sims trophy winner that's the only reason so the raiders have themselves a heisman trophy winner which certainly does not hurt you when you want to pump up your team and get people to realize that you've got a big man on your team maybe not the number one running back but he's got that trophy under his arm he was a guy who you looked at him and you thought oh man it's gonna be a bad day for us he had a panache about him he was a very poetic running back the way he moved was like he was on a dance floor [Applause] marcus allen did live up to billing he was so versatile gets to jackson getting an allen block cuts under it bangs through bosworth touchdown raiders marcus allen was an incredible pro player incredible so good near the goal line our number nine heisman winner is third on the all-time career rushing touchdown list with 123 and many were scored with his signature move marcus touchdown his 100th career wrestling touchdown mark is a cool cat he's a good looking dude he's a charismatic guy so that fits his personalities no man i'm not going in i'm going over i have already had a call from moscow they think that marcus allen is a new secret weapon and they insist that we dismantle it even presidents notice a heisman winner no executive order was needed to name alan the mvp of super bowl 18 after his 191 yard two touchdown performance the super bowl run against the redskins a 74-yard touchdown that's a lot like those youtube clips where it looks like a 15 year old is playing peewee football against 10 year olds [Applause] [Applause] marcus allen's at number nine how can he be at number nine good question kenny here's your answer alan was a backup in his final three seasons with the raiders sure he went to the pro bowl in five of his first six seasons but only once more in the last decade of his career marcus allen was an incredible college football player who had two or three very good nfl seasons who had a signature super bowl highlight and had many many many years of men you look at his season by season numbers and he didn't have a whole lot of thousand yard seasons he was just a very good running back for a long time so number nine is a fair spot when i see earl campbell i think there's no running back more fun to watch i would make the argument that nobody has ever been more powerful as running back than earl campbell earl campbell had two or three amazing seasons and then blew his knee out and that was the end of that if you've just joined us earl campbell is out of the ball game he wasn't able to play as long as some of the other great running backs i don't think that diminishes anything that he's done though [Music] there's a guy that came into the nfl not unexpectedly an impact player coming out of texas the heisman trophy winner and he comes in here and helps these guys out running the ball over 300 times in that season just an incredible back here's a guy that not only became the nfl's rookie of the year but the mvp in only his 12th pro game but tyler rose was in full bloom in front of the national audience of monday night football watching that game with my dad and earl campbell just went racing right up the sideline against the miami dolphins defense at the 50 campbell wasn't a one-season wonder he became only the second player to lead the nfl in rushing three straight years including a career-high 1934 yards in 1980. in pro football's passing revolution campbell is the aberration the one man larger than the revolution everything's bigger in texas including the legend of hometown hero earl campbell you just could not tackle him with a hand or an arm in fact he couldn't tackle him with his shoulder a lot of times unless you had two or three sets of shoulders he turned linebackers into speed bumps and defensive backs in the roadkill i love to watch earl the way he ran over me video of earl gory isaiah robertson is one of the most famous videos in history he gave out so many more hits probably that he took it's like boom you just hey meet me i'm real careful boom hey here's that have some shoulder pad there have some more boom here have some elbow and when his playing days are over he won't have to write his autobiography he runs it on every play despite his brief career our number eight heisman winner's impact was long lasting if rolling was in the game you didn't leave your seat you put the binoculars on 34 and you stayed with him whatever he did it's just so tough to say that earl campbell is not high on that list because in his prime that was the standard by which everything was measured in the sport earl campbell's not on your list you shouldn't have a list coming up the heisman dance is well known but which winner strikes suppose that's even more famous i understand why you're doing but this is totally ratings driven that's right superman sure a lot of people have won the heisman but not everyone who's won a heisman has been successful right what they call those they call those guys bust before becoming the old ball coach steve spurrier was a heisman winning quarterback at the university of florida but spurrier's nfl career fizzled and he threw 60 interceptions and only 40 touchdowns a lot of guys went home with their trophy but never really had anything to show of it in the nfl ty detmer threw for 5 100 yards the year he won the heisman in his eight year nfl career he threw for a paltry 16. what a stupid throw man was that a gift boy that was tough he has to be able to do it on the field not all heisman trophy winners can't charlie ward went to play basketball danny werkle couldn't throw the deep out the first turnover of the day and it might be deadly after a historic rookie season for passing yards in a season by a rookie quarterback our next player came back down to earth only to rise again like the caped crusader he is [Music] seven heisman winner in the nfl pam newton is a guy who took the college football world by storm gets the nfl and immediately the entire story of the carolina panthers is cam newton newton moves up in the pocket guns it long downfield the one person that you want to put the name above the marquee is cam newton that's exactly the kind of impact that you want from a rookie who comes in with that heisman our number 10 heisman winner burst onto the nfl scene after just one year at auburn university he threw 51 touchdowns in the sec that is unheard of given the level of talent that he's playing with so the one season he had was as good as any season that i've ever seen when you factor in everything the historical struggles of guys who've had to start right away the fact that he was a one-year wonder potentially in college the utter lack of an off-season you put all that together and cam newton might have had the most remarkable rookie season ever season of giving man goes up over the top and he has got a touchdown superman [Music] in 2010 when jimmy clausen was the quarterback their offense was almost unwatchable every sunday and the panthers are going quickly backward but here comes newton and the whole dynamic change cam newton took the carolina panthers from the worst offense in the lead to one of the five best offenses in the league they scored 17 touchdowns in 2010. they scored 48 in newton's first season newton will take it up the middle 40. during his remarkable rookie year cam newton made the nfl record book his personal playground just as you'd expect a heisman winner to do cam newton walked away with the most passing yards ever for a rookie the most rushing touchdowns ever for any quarterback who's ever played he's entirely too low not to be outdone in 2015 super cam led the panthers to a remarkable 15-1 record and a trip to the super bowl the carolina panthers are headed to super bowl 50 in santa clara california to me he is the next generation of quarterbacks he's putting together a resume we've literally never seen a football history in five years we could be looking at cam one two or three on this list i didn't know pitt had a football team until i heard a tony dorsett the heisman is the most coveted award a college player can receive that's going to make you feel great be considered as the number one football player in the whole united states it mean a great deal to me because i am striving to be the best heisman winners are game changers and a team would pay just about any price to acquire one the cowboys have been established as a heavy preseason favorite because on the day of the draft they were able to give to seattle three draft choices in exchange for a heisman trophy winner when that trade was made by dallas with seattle to get that pick to pick him i remember saying that's going to be the championships for them heisman hardware comes with heavy expectations and tony dorsett was no exception he's coming to a cowboys team that is already america's team so all he had to do was skip the part where he was a prospect and play it in your hall of fame level no pressure tony dorsett has scored his first touchdown as a pro [Music] [Applause] our number six heisman winner delivered in a big way rushing for over a thousand yards and 12 touchdowns in his rookie year there was nothing scarier for an opponent than to see him take that pitch follow the blocks one more block he might go and then he was named rookie of the year and was the first player ever to win the college championship one year and the super bowl the next what can you say this is complete total utter domination my goodness that first step was amazing that acceleration that burst jump started so many great runs in that signature moment that 99 yard touchdown run goal line defense for the vikings here he goes that's tony dorsett quick burst see the hall take off nobody can catch [Music] them as slighted as the cowboys have been by the pro football hall of fame let's not slide him on this list our number six heisman winner was a thousand yard rusher in eight of his first nine seasons and when he retired only walter payton had racked up more rushing yards so why is dorsett only number six on our list blame the man in the funny hat tom landry knew if he could put a cap on the number of touches georgette had it would prolong his career tony didn't like it i think people forget about how dynamic and explosive he was [Music] [Applause] he had the moments of pizzazz that did leave you wanting more and you just wonder if there was one more moment of greatness in the 80s maybe he'd be even higher up next which versatile heisman winner multitasked his this isn't the only iconic trophy in football let's take a look at our list of nfl heisman winners number 10 touchdown jimmy brown he's the one who did it no matter how bad the quarterback was brown touchdown raiders he's number nine on this list marcus allen has to be higher [Music] isaac newton discover gravity pam newton defies when that trade was made i remember saying that's going to be the championships for them charles woodson is as far as i'm concerned one of the greatest heisman trophy winners of all time because he did it differently than anybody else he deserves on the list yes because you can make a case he was a better nfl cornerback than he was a college player [Applause] you have him ranked the fifth best heisman winner in terms of nfl success i don't know i just can't get it out of my mind that you know that that should have been manning's trophy that year the vision you know of winning the heisman kind of left a little bit because no defensive players wouldn't have some trophy every year at heisman trophy voting time what happens the offensive guy wins it that's the way it was until our number five heisman winner beat al peyton manning to become the first and only primarily defensive player to win college football's most prestigious honor there was a lot of debate the year that charles wanted the fact that well into his 30s he's still one of the best defensive players in the national football league to me just signifies the voters got it right that year charles woodson was a deserving heisman trophy winner with the fourth pick in the draft the oakland raiders have selected charles woodson i barely remember his raiders career while his oakland career was mostly forgettable our number five heisman winner was a key figure in one very memorable play [Music] after eight roller coaster seasons in oakland woodson left the black hole for greener pastures the player i think of as charles woodson the hall of famer is the player with the pack since arriving in green bay our number five heisman winner has been elected to four pro bowls and was named defensive player of the year in 2009 his 11 picks for touchdowns ranked second all time bomber wins the right side [Applause] his raiders career was important but i think it's his packers career woodson fulfilled his campaign promise by helping the packers bring the lombardi trophy back to title town the green bay packers are world champions of football charles said if the president doesn't want to come to watch us at the super bowl then we're going to him and i've now learned something that every nfl quarterback already knows too well don't mess with charles woodson i think charles woodson should be higher because the heisman trophy is such a big part of his identity when you combine what he did at michigan and then marry that up with what i think has turned into a hall of fame pro career you get a guy who certainly belongs in the top five you could even punch him up higher if you want to i have no argument with him at number four even he said five but well put him at four then number five is the golden boy paul hornick paul horning one coming out of notre dame heisman trophy winner a lot of hype around him he was one of these very very versatile bats that's quarterback paul holland with the ball carrying for 25 yards against smu they were wondering what is he going to do in the pros what will his what will his niche be [Applause] he was kind of the last in the line of players who did multiple things the way he did them 31 counter on three ready our number four heisman winner almost missed out on the main qualification to make our list poor horning barely won the heisman of all the players on this list paul horning had the lowest number of heisman votes it was a really interesting vote that year jim brown took the east tommy mcdonald took texas and oklahoma paul hornig took the midwest but the golden boy prevailed and took home the heisman hardware i think of paul horning hacker's great not paul horning notre dame great paul horning to me might have been one of the more overrated players in the nfl and i think that he might be a little high on that list he didn't do anything great but he did a lot of things well you're entitled to your opinion pete just don't express it around bart starr i'm not sure enough people realize how talented this man was not only was he a heisman trophy winner he was an excellent runner he was an excellent blocker watched paul horning's blocked on a blitzing colt linebacker shake taylor loose he was a great pass receiver he threw our option pass very very well he was a great kicker three straight incomplete passes give paul horning another chance to swing his golden toe everything that we called on him to do he excelled at he became what he had to be to make us successful now paul could do it all and he did love to score both on the field and off goalie locked in a nutshell when you think of the packer sweep which was one of the most vaunted most historic plays of all time it was horny carrying the ball what we're trying to get is a seal here and a seal here and try to [Laughter] [Music] despite his golden boy status debate is rampant on paul hornick's placement on our list he's a great player he's two-time mvp in the national football league heisman trophy pro football hall of fame and above all a winner if you just simply look at the stat sheet at rushing yards and that sort of thing you're like yeah i don't know man i'm not sure that resume is big enough when you watched him play you knew you were watching a star he should be in there in the top five i would think without any question and i would nudge him up a point or two i don't think there's any way you guys should have paul horning ready to edit tim tebow earl campbell other than the fact he was a golden dumber some golden donors make that choice coming up which former first overall pick is our number three heisman winner the right end is number 82 leon when you talk about the heisman trophy winners in the nfl you could put him at the top the heisman trophy might well have been named the best ball carrier award because there are more running backs halfbacks and fullbacks who have won than every other position combined the 1985 heisman winner bo jackson was maybe the greatest athlete ever to play football he'd have made our list had his career not been cut short one of the most tragic injuries in the last 50 years in pro football because it deprived us of more bo jackson herschel walker won his heisman in 1982 and was drafted by the cowboys but dallas eventually traded him to minnesota for five players and six draft picks one of which would become emmitt smith the cowboys won three super bowls while the vikings got less than three seasons and 1600 yards out of walker eddie george did his talking on the field the rookie of the year in 1996 ended his career as one of only two players to rush for over 10 000 yards without missing a start george going right cuts it up makes one tackle spins it was hard to leave eddie off of our countdown but we were a little too juiced up over our number three heisman winner top 10 heisman trophy winners the first one i i think of is uh o.j simpson 1968 heisman trophy winner o.j simpson was more than just college football's best player he was the biggest name in the game they talk about tebow being the biggest college football star o.j simpson was the biggest college football player i remember came out of southern cal it's just all that he had everything to to make him that guy every time o.j gets his hands on the ball this entire crowd comes to his feet when he really broke open it was like your defense was in mud they couldn't close any gap between themselves and him i think you could easily argue that o.j simpson is the most valuable player of the 70s for the entire league the man we are watching tonight is one of the great athletes of all time many say the greatest runner whoever carries the football his name is oj [Music] oj isn't a guy that anyone can look at is the same obviously in his post-football life anytime you see the name oj simpson you cringe but if you were looking purely between those lines on the field and what he did you have to acknowledge he was a phenomenal player i am surprised that oj simpson is number three what did oj ever win nothing didn't win national championship in college correct didn't win a super bowl at the nfl level i'm putting marcus allen ahead of him i'm putting tony dorsett ahead i'm putting guys who won championships ahead of them the buffalo bills select is their first choice the first round back back o.j simpson university of southern california when you draft a heisman trophy winner you expect him to be big fast and strong if you were to mold a running back and say be like this o.j simpson would be that right [Applause] you even expect him to break records but you don't expect him to rush for 2 000 yards in a 14 game season which is what the juice did in 1973. it's probably the most remarkable single season performance by any running back in the nfl it's just remarkable every time he handles the ball he finished 859 yards ahead of the number two rusher that's like winning a race crossing the finish line and the other guys are barely at the halfway point i just wonder if the three of us at this moment fully realized what it has been our great privilege to watch [Music] [Applause] with an on-field resume as good as they come o.j simpson firmly sits as our number three heisman winner when you talk about what he did in college you could put him at the top [Music] [Applause] when you talk about the heisman trophy winners in the nfl i mean he's still pretty hot o.j simpson as a jim brown could pull you over barry sanders might have had crazier moves but take oj over any man who's ever done it up next which mild-mannered heisman winner has his superhero identity revealed at number two everybody would want their sons to be like him you cannot go against captain america there have been 29 quarterbacks who have won the heisman trophy some have been okay but not good enough to make our countdown carson palmer won his heisman in 2002 and made the bengals relevant he's thrown his third touchdown cast of the day but he never won a playoff game for cincinnati doug flutie won a heisman in part for the greatest play in college football history [Music] [Applause] the undersized qb brought excitement to every team he played for but was constantly being replaced as a starter jim plunkett was a first-round flameout before finding success with the raiders guy was the heisman trophy winner number one draft pick and he won two super bowls no love for jim plunkett anywhere in his career everybody in football blows him up [Music] he's not on a list guys guys come on sorry george plunkett was great but he lost out to our number two heisman winner who was a real american hero he has that superhero quality about him that that makes him worthy of status like this everybody would want their daughters to marry him their sons to be like him he captain america that's what roger steinbeck was captain america the captain america of america's team they are the dallas cowboys america's team sorry you just wanted to vomit we were so kind of inundated with captain america that i know i stopped reading comic books because of roger starlach can you imagine today a guy from navy winning the heisman trophy our number two heisman winner led the midshipmen to two wins in the army navy game in his junior season he earned his trophy by guiding navy to a nine and one record and the number two ranking in the nation kennedy was still president when he won the heisman so that's a pretty cool thing just to put him on this list and obviously his career was so unique roger staubach put football on hold for four years to serve his military commitment you missed the old days i miss i miss football a great deal yes i do just the competition and using god-given ability really i just miss being a part of football he basically had this long gap and then he comes back and really puts together one of the greatest decades ever for a nfl quarterback need a miracle roger takes the snap humps and watch one log down the near sideline for drew pearson pearson makes the catch at the five touchdown you know i enjoy sex as much as your name only i do it with one girl you cannot go against captain america he was a good christian guy roger stallback was tim tebow before tim tebow with all the dramatics the only thing he did that was mean was beat you if you were on the other side 42 seconds left in the game redskins lead by six starbucks i hated that guy because i was a 49er fan he knocked them out of the playoffs three years in a row they were up by 11 points with two minutes to go at one point and they come back again throwing carcasses right power 49 near geo it's on two heisman winners need to be extraordinary and starbuck was more remarkable than most he entered the league as a 27 year old rookie and within two years changed the culture of the cowboys they called the cowboys in those days next year's champions she was the missing ingredient once they put him in the starting job that's all they needed our number two heisman winner led the cowboys to four super bowls winning in super bowl 6. [Applause] and super bowl 12. roger goes deep across the middle touchdown he's got the stats and he has the leadership and he has the wins and he has super bowls so he's got every part of the argument we remember his greatness on levels that by today's standards are very difficult to achieve it's fairy tale it's a and it lives forever coming up which heisman winner roared his way to the number one spot on our list he could do things that no other player could do he was one of the greatest players period [Music] there's no need to challenge our rankings coach let's recap the list so far [Music] [Music] number nine seems low for marcus allen he did something for that town that hadn't been done before cam poses for the cameras why so many cameras over here paparazzi number six [Music] runs into the record books [Music] number five he's got a president and i've now learned something that every nfl quarterback already knows too well don't mess with charles what's number four green ladies he did love to score both on the field enough number three the nfl's first tonight many say the greatest runner whoever carries the football his name is o.j captain america he's got every part of the barry argument number one there are some guys who are great athletes and just by being such a great athlete they're going to be a phenomenal player at the college level very few of those guys are great enough athletes to be phenomenal at the pro level barry sanders is one of those few guys [Applause] i'd pay money to see jim brown earl campbell and barry sanders play football and they're the only three and i think i'd put sanders at the top of that list what a run by barry sanders he is something i'm not so sure that he would be the greatest heisman trophy winner to ever play in the nfl because he didn't win in the nfl the one really damning statistic of barry's career is minus one yard against green bay after the 1994 season i can't defend that it's a guy not getting it done in the most important stage what's the status of barry minus 10. i figure he'll go below 10. he'll be minus 20 by the end of the day [Applause] heisman winners have a wow factor and nobody had more wow than barry sanders elusive doesn't begin to tell you what this guy could do what an incredible run by the best back in the national football league barry was like bobbing for apples with your hands tied behind your back reaching over there like this and they couldn't get it there's like grease pink barry sanders with a move that mcgill the play where he spun harlan barnett into the ground for the patriots is still the single greatest play i've ever seen he didn't know which way he was going and i'm not even sure barry knew which way he was going barry [Music] three sanders wow there hasn't been a second barry sanders there probably never will be some nfl players are stars but only barry sanders left stars star struck i had the honor of playing with him for a year it was my rookie year and i just remember my first time in the huddle you know i'm looking at barry and he's like wow i can't believe i'm sitting in the huddle i remember you know we broke the huddle i said hut i turn around and i realize that it's a barry sanders so i pitched the ball and i just stood there i just i just pitched the ball to berry santa and the coach is ripping me you need to boot out you have the defensive end to contain and i'm like coach that's barry sanders barry sanders should absolutely be number one on this list 15 000 rushing yards 109 touchdowns and a 2 000 yard season made barry sanders the easy choice for the best heisman winner in the nfl forget about just being one of the most dynamic running backs and talented running backs in the history of the nfl he was one of the greatest players period he to me embodies incredible talent he could do things as a runner in college and in the nfl that no other player could do only barry sanders anytime the ball was in his hand you didn't want to miss it you did not want to miss what he could do i'd have paid pretty close to any price to see barry sanders play the game it's the greatest football league today and it's one of the greatest i've seen in a long long time having played against him in college and the nfl i don't think there's any doubt and he should be number one he should be number one probably yeah oh good good guys got it right [Music] good
