quick tips that will make your life easier and help you survive and thrive in Dwarf Fortress [Music] when embarking on your first Adventure choose your Outpost location carefully avoid places that have haunted or Sinister surroundings for now those can get really bad really fast mountainous location can be very good for defense but also make sure there's some trees around because you'll need wood to make beds keep an eye on what types of oars you get in certain places settling next to a river can be very beneficial as they're an amazing source of food but beware of aquifers try to avoid them for now as they can lead to flooding of your Fortress if you're not careful enough foreign your dwarves have arrived you can click on anyone and learn their skills relationships thoughts and more keeping an eye on their needs will help you provide what they're missing happy dwarves make for happy Fortress familiarize yourself with surroundings locate your water supply tree patches and a spot where you're going to start mining for your Fortress open up your creature step and check under other to make sure there's no dangerous animals prowling around F1 by default returns you to the wagon top right you can rebind the F keys to snap to a select place which can be very beneficial when you dig many Z levels deep for faster camera movement things left outside might get stolen so storage in a safe spot will be important as well quickly move your grazing animals into a pan outside so they don't starve to death while you deal with basic setup of your Fortress foreign to be able to build anything you'll need some workshops Carpenter and stoneworker should be your starting too with storage for wood and stone nearby these will be used to craft Basics like beds doors tables chairs chest bins and barrels dig into the mountain for safety by default you'll have one Miner assigned open up the labor manual and assign an additional one or two to speed up the process and get inside to safety as soon as possible as you build workshops customize your stockpiles this way it makes it easier for you to find what you're looking for and means less travel time for dwarves work in the workshops you can always resize them later bins and barrels are life savers for organized stockpiles dwarves will put items like bars armor and Ladder into bins and food and drinks into barrels buckets and bags are also important thing you'll need later on another important thing you need to do is subscribe to my channel it will improve your Fortress success Chance by a solid 69.4 20 percent if you're near a river your Fisher dwarf will go fish automatically and if you build a fishery they'll prepare them there for consumption you can also butcher animals if you assign a hunter under labor he'll automatically hunt animals bring them to a butcher workshop and then the heights will go to a Tanner you can also Slaughter your own animals from the creature staff or train them to fight or hunt for you building a farmer Workshop will allow you to Mill them and Shear them for wool as well a quick source of food can be fruits and plants growing outside especially in Autumn there will be plenty together outside in preparation for winter you can tell them to gather specific plants or paint a Zone where they'll always do some Gathering but long term you'll need to rely on farming you can place farms and dirt or sand and select all seasons to grow something mushrooms need to grow inside and Plum helmets are the backbone of every Dwarf Fortress because dwarves need alcohol as much as they need food under labor select kitchen and forbid Plum helmets from being cooked as Food thusly they'll only be used in a still to to make drinks and give back seeds so you can replant them for Following season you don't get any seeds back if you cook them drinks are made from fruits or plants it does still you'll need barrels to store them in and make sure to grab mugs to drink with as well [Music] after you got your alcohol supply store that is set up and in painting a meeting area and click the plus sign to make it a Tavern add some tables chairs chests for mugs and decorate it with statues and Engravings soon entertainers and adventurers will come to visit your Tavern and that's where the fun begins every so often new migrants will arrive and you'll have to accommodate them when it comes to sleeping you can start with a dormitory or go for bedrooms small two by two bedrooms are big enough for doors they'll want the bed first and then a chest and a cabinet to store their items in clothing as your Fortress grows you'll need to build temples Guild halls and more assign them by first building a meeting hall and then press on the magnifying glass to figure out what each Place wants and expects you can specify a deity they worship in a temple or leave it unspecified so everyone can pray to whoever they want foreign s get injured you'll need to bring them to a hospital to treat them you'll first need to assign a chief medical dwarf then you can build a hospital from a meeting Hall you can assign multiple healer roles but at a start a doctor will suffice hopefully one with some medical skill click on the magnifying glass to learn what you need and what you have they'll store the needed items in chest and injured Wars will be brought onto bats to be treated you also need traction benches that can be made at a mechanic Workshop from basic tables and rock mechanisms to fight infections you also need soap production of soap is a bit more complicated and requires multiple workshops you'll need to render fat into Tallow from butchered animals in a kitchen or meal seeds into paste and then press oil from them next make Ash blocks at a wood furnace and then turn them into lye as an ashery finally you can combine live with Tallow or oil at a soap makers Workshop it's of utmost importance you keep your Fortress organized manager and bookkeeper doors who make your life much easier once you assign them they'll require a small office where they'll do their work bookkeeper's job is to count items clicking on stocks will tell you the exact amount of items you have in your storage so you can see exactly what you need or have in abundance via manager you can assign work orders either through a specific Workshop or through work order tab you can assign one-time orders or set it up in a way they'll always have a specified amount of certain items stored manager will also notify you when something is missing and the order cannot be completed giving you an idea what you need next foreign Traders will arrive you'll need to build a trade Depot outside and assign a broker who can appraise the rough value of your goods move items you want to trade into the depot and tell the broker to get there to trade traders who always want to make a profit so you'll have to offer them a bit more depending on how good your broker is you'll be able to get a better deal early on extra Jewels can be good trading material but you'll need a dual crafter Workshop to cut them crafts figurines Rings Etc are also good as they can be made of otherwise less useful materials like muscle shells you can always ask the trader to bring specific Goods next year but you have to pay extra for them getting early steel bars for weapons or new supply of seeds can be worth paying more the trader will also tell you what they'll want to buy next year and if you can craft those specific items they'll be prepared to pay more for them life in your Fortress will not always be peaceful to make a military you'll need to assign a militia Commander then you can make a new Squad from the menu on the bottom right you can assign up to 10 dwarfs to a squad some already come with skills but you can also train peasants into becoming legendary Fighters first need to choose a uniform for your dwarves metal and leather means smelly Fighters while Archer uniform means leather clad crossbow wielding boat wars you'll start with some weapons and armor and your dwarves will pick up the items they need when they're drafted for training or War water Skins are an important item for everyone and archers will require Quivers and bolts you can tell them to attack Patrol gather or defend at a specific area it is prudent you have them training at least a couple of months every year so they don't get too rusty with their combat skills and as your Fortress grows you should keep some permanent military for metal armor you'll have to smelt ore at the smelter you can check Stone under labor temp to learn what ore gives you what metal when digging you can click the more arrow and select specific ore to be mined out and your dwarves will keep digging just the selected ore until the vein runs out but before you start smelting you'll need charcoal or Coke charcoal can be made out of logs at a wood furnace while Coke can be made from bituminous coal at a smelter we'll need some charcoal first to fire up the actual smelter once you have metal bars you can make weapons and armor at a metalsmith for your soldier dwarves and replace their old copper equipment which shine a new iron or steel steel is good for Sharp weapons while silver works great for war hammers but you start with iron which is a decent upgrade over Copper gear you start with there's many more things to learn about War Fortress so here's some quick bonus tips when someone is in Fame mood they'll claim a workshop you can see what items they require and make sure that you have them available they'll end up crafting a cool artifact but if you fail to provide them items they'll go on a certain rage once you dig into the cameras below fungi will start spawning on dirt areas allowing your animals to graze inside you can flood a rock Cavern and wait for water to evaporate leaving mud on the ground where fungi can grow you can send your dwarves to raid in the world map capturing settlements or stealing artifacts if you want to see and learn more I have let's play series go on my channel and a separate one on my twit Channel all the links are in the description below foreign [Music]
