and this is my smallest ever engine I ever had here on the dynamometer a 241 cubic inch and it happens to be a Hemi [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] and here we have it 1954 dodge Royale pace car convertible with a 241 Hemi which is from the fact you rated at 150 horsepower of course you took us a while to get this engine on the dynamometer turkeys I want to find some pieces we've got a few pieces here and there and I've also got a few pieces from nothing and we finally put together and of course this is not an engine that's very easy to be installed on the dynamometer we had to do a lot of fabrications for example like for the motor mounts they have no way ears on the side of the block to attach my motor modes like any typical v8 but so we made a brace or a bridge what you call it which is underneath the water pump my friend Dan was in the shop the other night and I told him that there I wanted to fabricate something to put this engine on dynamometer because for the factory there's a bridge like so it's a funny looking piece which I don't have so I told that if we can make something so I could put her on the dynamometer so I could do some testing on this 2:41 red Ram Hemi so anyways he stayed here one night with me we got a true piece of the metal of course we fabricated it and here it is we've got it done and finally got it on the stand on the dynamometer and then another complication we were very lucky the bell housing from the 340 L a engine or a small-block a inch and a Mopar which is right here bolts right up to the housing on the block on the Year 241 a me so I was lucky with that but the only problem is these engines only come with an automatic transmission from what I know so then we had an issue with getting a fire wheel with his bow housing but then again the firewood account resistance is so big it doesn't fit inside this browsing so I noticed that the crankshaft on this motor was an 8 bolt crank and then I needed a smaller flower like 130 tooth so luckily I tried the Hemi flywheel which I have in my dynamometer for testing Hemis which is a small flower wheel 130 tooth which lined up with the eight bolts on the crank which I had bolted in right here in this motor and it worked fine and then again we had the issue with the starter and the teeth lining up the flywheel so we have to space the block and after that we got it perfectly lined up we had to space out the starter like so then we added a few washes here like so right here then we have to fabricate the brackets and then of course this is what comes with the car for the flywheel it's actually a torque converter I sliced up to talk over that went we had a spare one but then again I had to Center the holes to go my friction plate for the dynamometer then we took a part of course the talk of order to line it up then I said you know what this is not working positions too big it's hitting my bell housing for the LA 340 engine housing and it didn't work so then I said you know what let me try something else and this is where I thought of putting the hey me flywheel which I I noticed the eight studs was exactly like a Hemi so we got that on and of course there's no threaded flywheel we put bolts and nuts so we got that so I went to a bolt shop which I got from from the place down the street here and there we got it done so that was another case and then I had a distributor here's the Subaru I looked at I go you know what this is a mess you know I know it runs on points okay so I said you know what I'm not gonna sit here try to fix this stuff and I noticed you also wanted to buy a pet Ronix kit but I thought of something else I took a look at a 340 electronic distributor which is right here this is exactly what I got here 72 73 340 electronic distributor of course I can't form a 340 engine and look at that it bolt it right on perfect so once we got the flywheel set up once we got the bike that to hold up the engine once we got the distributor going then of course we have the wiring this is what comes on a 241 Hemi ceramic or whatever this is I don't know I couldn't find a set of wires at the moment when I put the engine on the dynamometer so what I did is I took a set of wires from a 426 Hemi and as you can see I installed them just like a Hemi 426 and it did the job there's a little bit of a loose fit here but doesn't matter it still looks Knapp's into the spark plug and that's what counts and then I thought was pretty dissention together I installed valve covers the other day I took out some red paint with a brush and I sided or 1/8 and I started painting the the letters red ram and dodge and the wolf courts to give it a little bit more better look but that's the way it came from the factory so I sat there with a little brush I did some touch-up just to give it a better look and here it is I know I couldn't find a stencil kit on the market that I could stick on or find a way to do it so I did the best I can with what I had the valve covers are so pitted and rusted you couldn't even read the name in some cases of course some of the parts is almost flat but I try to copy which this is a better box cover on the other side so I copied this one to be a of course like twins I've done it and and this is the result but you know what putting this engine on the dynamometer was something you know playing with fire wheels playing with the support and of course this was a issue too but I finally figured it out this Jupiter I went to a 340 distributor now of course this is the housing that comes for the thermostat straight up which I don't use I use the one I use from the Adana mama all the time which is a 90 degree angle this is factory straight up and that's the terminal housing I use for the dynamometer but that's not that was not an issue my most concern was setting it up and here's the carburetor with an oven hauser intake manifold and this from the factory I believe is 150 or 160 horsepower engine it's not modified in any way it's been rebuilt to start specifications and the only thing it had was a 30 over bore and then the other part is the exhaust system of course we don't have headers for 241 Hemi I use the original exhaust manifolds as we all know there's nothing special disease or smallpox all I know is the way they were designed they make no power whatsoever check it out such a small little tube and if you look at the other side it's even worse look at that simple waffle design exhaust manifold don't expect this thing to make power with these manifolds as you can see the exhaust is coming out of here and then exhaust coming out here of course you're gonna lose power all they do is smash each other I trying to exit right down the pipe for free for a good career exhaust mouthful you need individual tubing like headers or a high-performance manifold but then again back in 1954 this is the manifold II came with the engine very poor design but of course we got it to put it back on the engine sake get it running on the dynamometer so we could check out the engine how goes breaking the cam that we got of course to check the oil pressure check for leaks check for noises and of course see if there's any vibrations what surprised me of course these dentists also came with a tube bowel then they had an upgrade as a dealer I believe a dealer installation with an oven also intake for panel setup with the Hemi head of course maybe that more compression ratio but this will actually rated seven point something compression ratio but you know what then every thought of doing exhaust is our performance I don't know but they never changed it but this is an awful design but then again back at 54 who thought of that right and then I had another issue yesterday because I when I had the engineer running I said let me check you forgot oil on the walkers because these are non adjustable lockers and they were very very gummy dirty so I took out the valve cover yesterday we ran the engine without the above cover and I was very very very small drops of water coming through the walkers so buddy and I we took up all the shafts we dismantle everything and we have to blow air and the cleaner and every little rocker like to every little pinhole which took us time to clean the shafts inside out start to get more oil fed through the air push rods in the rocker assembly and after that was done and put all back then we made a Rogers for a few seconds and we finally seen the oil splashing out everywhere like it should so we put the valve cover back on then we did a few tests and then we took it from there this is a unique oil filter it's a cartridge type back in the 50s most engines that cartridge they didn't have a spin on oil filters so I figured you know I'm going to put their word for the adapter on put a new cartridge bolt it in and I figured you know it must have an oil leak for sure you know everything sold on this engine but surprisingly I have low leash whatsoever so everything went well and of course I had to prime the engine before I install this on the dynamometer and I mean it didn't have the same water pumps like the new modern LA 340 engine so I had to make my own shaft so I could prime the engine and of course let me show you all the Mopar range and small-block big-block I primed them with this tool right here which is a hexagon shaft to put on an electric drill and I put it through the oil pump and this alters design when I prime the engine but in this case it's a different world pump it's more like Chevy style which has a slot like this so I come as I went out and got myself shaft I put a slot in it I put it down there into the oil pump through the distributor hole and I had it primed before I installed it and then when I got 70 psi oil pressure right on the engine time I said to myself you know what we're ready to get this running on the dyno [Music] and we got a running and of course someone had the carburetor result for us and of course really an issue with the float that the fuel was just pouring in into the engine because the float was stuck open so then we took apart the top of the carburetor which a facility last night and we fixed that also and of course my customer also bought in the oven I was a football in t that we started with because that's what he wanted to run the angel with in the first place and we built the engine with everything that is brought in bottom line it was this was a challenge but I've never done an old Hemi on a dynamometer you know like we had to go through so much work they said you practically took us three times longer than any other v8 engine to install on the dynamometer but then again you know I wanted to see how it's gonna go how its kind of work it was pretty impressive it's an old engine it was designed way before I was born so it was something you need to see so we're gonna get it warmed up we'll make a little test and I did some testing yesterday but I realized that it runs lean at full throttle so I'm gonna have to open it up again and look at the jets if it you grow bigger if I've just for this type of carburetor so we're gonna warm it up so you guys can see how it was for an old 1954 engine that came back to life again [Music] [Applause] and I also have the original shop manager that my client drove right in here it is shop manual Dodge this is 1954 and of course I looked up the specs I use this manual to do my jobs and here we are we have a 7.1 compression ratio and of course the here it is maximum brake horsepower at 4400 rpm there's 150 in the royale car of course right here so when you have the Royale da GTL it's a 150 horsepower engine at 4400 rpm so we're gonna do some dyno testing and see what we're gonna get like I said it's a factory built we copied exactly or what the factory came with nothing modified we just had it on the dynamometer of course the way we build in the weight came from the factory so let's see what we're gonna get so let's go get it warmed up start it make a test and we'll take it from there [Applause] [Music] see for 245 cubans 3.4 67 for 250 okay just what we're gonna run it [Music] I gotta make sure the choke does not close on me when I make full throttle test so you see what I could do with this you guys want to know an interesting fact the person the lady that bought this car brand-new back in 54 she's still alive today she's 99 years old and she is the one that bought this car brand-new with her husband back in 1954 I hope she watches this video and she hears me what I'm saying and of course I don't know her name but she's very well that she just sold this engine to this customer of mine so when she sees the video and sees this thing come back to life again what she's bought back in 54 brand-new and thanks for doing all the old changes back then for that reason the hinge is still alive the only thing it just need a little rebuild machen addy you see something come back to life after so many years freak out man let me tell you and they bought this car brand new you know and this is a touch to me because they're you know I don't know this lady that I bought this car brand you should love to see this thing running or if she can't come here of course she could see you're running on our video and of course that someone tells her about it and then we're gonna get a run east as you can see it and here it is 1954 [Music] this is strange a this is a 1954 red round I've had this engine about a year here in my shop no rush because the car is not ready yet it's on the restoration I'm glad that I got the sensor running for Joe so now let's get a wound up run it and see what we can get oh my god this is older than I am let's get it going that's how it goes you guys saw that little Picasso paint job I did on the valve covers yeah not bad for a beginner here we go [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] enjoying a warming up a posture a we're done running the waterfall that for some point of reason I don't have the same reading you got the temperature sensor on this motor is in the back of the intake manifold what I'm reading there and when it reading on my cooling tower is totally different you never I never thought you'd get this morning on the dynamometer and I finally did so happy [Music] [Music] here we are running up a little to 41 red man heavy [Music] every all air-fuel ratio I'm gonna lean it out a little bit [Music] it's a bit runny rich on idle so let me just throw it there field mixer shoes let's just read you guys this is a Hemi hump without this it ruin my home ball of a Hemi [Music] we fabricate our own bracket there's no more amount so I made my own tractor - dan I know and then look it is I used a Hemi flywheel so that's it's an eight bolt crank it's not ready to crankshaft so I put bolts or nuts I used a smaller firework with the Hemi flywheel the eight bolts on the flange lined up perfect and doing it for my head it wasn't racist so I spaced that out I also spaced out the starter with the flywheel and I've finally gone in the dynamometer and check this out check this out check out the high performance exhaust we're going to take in a 2,300 rpm told 5,000 rpm I put in our RPMs for a second and here we go thank you happy well I think we're all getting older here in our [Music] [Applause] [Music] and ever we have it there it is wow it's pretty improved dad after a book into reason a couple of times take this out this is a factory rating out under 50 horsepower at 4400 RPM we just did a pool look at it we got what 115 at 4400 rpm exactly that's what the shop - a maximum over sports 4400 rpm we got 156 157 so pretty lit we're pretty well on the money because this is all factory and then the torque numbers well I think we have to start at our earlier rpm you're right on the numbers I like your fabrication that I have yeah then we spill a lot right yeah all done we have to spend a lot of time on the sitting up on the dynamometer flywheel great depict all system have a sprint and you know if we had heads forever to breed a horsepower again would you the thing is for a stock engine stock manifold everything is the way it was from the factory you're pulling the right numbers and the engine on smooth it does what pressure is great the only thing is the air fuel ratio is running a bit lean yeah but then again this is all factory look I'm running 15 so I'd like to want high 12 but then again I know think my customers gonna run full throttle I don't know if I got jets for this car video I don't know what kind of a car beaters I got a look at it maybe I might rich and I don't maybe we get a hundred six horsepower of it it's possible I'm gonna look into it right now I'm gonna take off the cover it's good to do so maybe we might gain more horsepower if we can reach it out the carburetor so you know what let's take a look sounds good hey it's a Carter yeah it might be the same jets as the elder Brock at Dell but now that will go brought edelbrock here we go I'm gonna take off the cover but you know I'd like to rich in it out and make another test and by the way check it out no oil leaks whatsoever for 1954 is that up is that something already is something I smell or not you're doing a good job here let me tell you yes sir a lot of guests come in no I see what I'm doing here in Guatemala there's always some of the cooking here and this is a unique motor which we had for a for a while drive his engine ready and running yeah but I've got I've got a few other engines to wear we're not look I know mama which already so anyways I just wanted to get this done and of course go forward with the rest of the motors and I hope I have to just for this one way to find out oh yeah find out I'm clear on my side yeah this is this is probably a mechanical choker mechanism sure okay just watch you're gonna burn your jacket or anything there man no I took up an eight-game we don't have hands look this is the honey waves thank you nicely hey you've got to see the wolf alter a gigantic cartridge right I notice whatsoever right this really surprised me that's Lucy's I'm just happy our garden running dad that's fun [Music] yeah you got good eyes money no there you know tell me what numbers that is okay you know when something has no power you know what you're gonna do the customer right you're gonna have a full-throttle a fine I know that's why I want it rich enough to secondary's we're just gonna go slightly bigger on the second there's that whole free we got there for your ratio we're looking for [Music] [Music] man that was a time-consuming to replace the two rear Jets on this carburetor we went out a few numbers up on it on the rear Jets hopefully I get their fuel ratio numbers I'm looking for and there and I hope I don't have to remove the cover again so let's see what happens let's go let's get it running check this out eh no harmonic balancer just a pulley it's an internal balance engine it's got low harmonic balance is just a pulley which is part of the front crank but anyways that's the way it wasn't 54 and here it is it's a neutral balanced engine we've done so many things to this engine we're still working on it ok let's fire it up one of my favorite drinks chocolate milk ok here we go yes sir [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] I am ready I'm just gonna warm it up [Music] honey you're ready to you got your coffee I got my chocolate drink 90 put the fan on that's right okay won't get Maddie ready well was it right here all right remember Cory we're taking it at that starting at 2300 and finishing at 5,000 rpms 300 rpms per second and here we go all set okay what have you got I got got something it seems to me running or not hold it we lost power you know what a warm-up getting a bit more let's see I don't know look let's check a veget power wall power look it seems to be running leaner something is wrong there let's go check maybe there's a Viking leak or something or did we forget anything that's strange what happened wait we put a bigger number yeah tell me if it's full throttle okay watch this hey yeah I know your Secretary's in the back of clothes okay then we got an issue we have an issue then it gets on the carburetor I must have put something wrong go full throttle 90 maybe I did something wrong it's open now it's closed it's open and it works mechanical not vicam its began so what happened yeah was it wide open before go Florence from its attic control room hold it there hey push pushing hard yeah it's wide open it's wide open you know what let's try it again let's make it back to my test okay let's try it again [Music] okay let's make another test [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] it's guiding off it's cutting off something's wrong I could tell so I'm thinking the party did you know what man shut the fine I think we should just yeah go I don't want to get apart again it's a it's misfire right now and then did not do that before the original chest all of us shut the water shut the water oh you've got to be kidding me you're gonna take apart the carburetor again let's put it back to the factory setup and make another test back the back you see we forget back our 150 horsepower then I'll leave it as it is okay let's go oh here we go back on the drawing board take off the top half and put back the original jet and let see we get back a 150 HP [Music] [Music] [Music] well we put back the same Jets the weight came from the factory I guess we're gonna leave all of that because we lost about 10 horsepower before so now we're going to do another test with the original judge back in place in the rear second area that we've replaced and it's all egos ready what it is a 3.30 idle 600 rpm [Music] [Music] here we go [Music] it yeah [Music] black [Music] we're still down like ten horsepower you know what let me fix the exhaust leak there are many and we'll do another test well you stole a same horsepower where do we go we don't know but we have a major exhaust leak on the pipe on the passenger side so we're gonna fix that and it will take it again let's go [Music] this little piece of pipe that came with your exhaust manifold all I did was there replace the bolts and you know it's not exactly a perfect flat meeting surface or what I see what good is everything that'll like that that's right I'm gonna try to see if we can find a gas Gator put some more silicone it's wider right [Music] okay y'all are gonna go do this to Manny and super to finish this off [Music] [Music] we lost an horsepower and I want to get it back so let's go get it [Music] dad always said use a straight file when you have to mating surfaces just to make sure that you've got no corrosion no dirt no curtain no deformities that way when you go to assemble it lines up perfectly mates nicely seals forever [Music] so we're gonna use a griddle Permatex high temperature silicone because everything's old on this exhaust pipe and exhaust manifold so it's warped - unbelievable measures so in this case I'm gonna use my trusty Permatex yeah my trusty Permatex because this stuff does miracles for me let me tell you it doesn't just work on gaskets either I found that you know it does a lot of it fix the seat on my truck good stuff [Music] I'm going to start getting a 2000 rpm and they take it to 5000 actually we don't we need to take it a 5000 I'm gonna take it a 49 mm 249 okay I'm ready whenever you are Oh to sensors on okay I'm gonna just one that up a little bit [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] well like it was misinterpreted your honors yeah I'm gonna look at them now okay put down the RPM yeah [Music] well you've got it I'm gonna take a look at this Parkway yeah we're stuck on 141 we're not getting back our 10 horsepower hey there's good okay you don't mind I don't know what happened but I haven't got back that 10 horsepower why let's take you know what did it move I should check it it maybe it moved let me take a look at it let me take a look at it you know it's got a very low compression ratio in 7.1 7.1 did you read pinyin when I gave it a 33 degrees maybe I should give it more I'm just you know what I'm gonna patch it to degrees maybe there's a super return that I was about 2 degrees but you know what let me pull my thumb light on it [Music] very rpm six on an 80 rpm what a rumble there it is Mike [Music] [Music] so much the past 38 now but you should crank it up [Music] like it up I'm gonna put the timing where I had it [Music] [Music] I wanna see if it's missing I brought it to go in at 6 degrees now [Music] more gaming yeah [Music] what even though okay I want to check the spark plugs now okay you're gonna shut the water pump to 90 you know unless some waters keep pumping out again like before I'm gonna take a look at the plug I know they're gonna be white I'm sure we're just gonna take out one I'm looking to see the color of the spark board right now I wanted cv-22 lean-to rich and she thought thought it's hot I've got that binary my Turkish I think it's running mean hey you see no black Idol but then you got a real look deep inside look at that joining mean I mean you should have some black on the outside also no I'm not worried but then again this is all factory we have bull factory JD nothing's blocked it's all there I got no exhaust lease the time it's where it is I think it is what it is but we're not building a reaching engineer we're just building a cruiser but still don't want to smooth it on as much as I can I want to see my fuel ratio meter while you're reading it up Manny you ready let's see [Music] it's a very high 13 when you're loading it up it is a [Music] I was working don't worry also be jetting it are the ones that the decide for this Bank wait I'm gonna rev it gonna cover it up what [Music] no change no change [Music] [Music] [Music] our first test of the day when we started fresh with the same judge we have been right now and hit 156 HP so you know what just just for fun I'm just gonna leave it alone I'll make my test on Monday and see if I get my same numbers back with the engine cool just to see I'm very surprised I put back all the same jetting and then I'm gonna look into the carpet and see if I can reaching it out because I could see from the plug is running lean so you know what I'll stop for today and somehow we got stuck on 141 horsepower yes a couple times I got 156 150 151 but you know what I try to gain ten more today I couldn't do it but it's it is what it is so there's no happening anything this is it and this is the real thing what do I want to tell you I don't have any other countries to compare with or try it out I'm leaving it as it is and I'll show it to my customer next week and then we'll take it from there but in the meantime is the best of done and that's all I can do and I know this car really needs more fuel I put more bigger jets so I have to go deeper in it maybe it will accept the figure just because of the tunnels or whatever port is going to whatever by name is I'm gonna see what my client wants next we can take it from there but in the meantime we got a little runny everyone's good we have nowhere legs no vibrations whatsoever if he's right good what fish is good no turkey noises and of course have normal lives which really surprised me which is great no leaks whatsoever and of course this is a 1954 engine I think we did a great job for the first time doing an engine from the 50s [Music] and you guys if you look down below the video we have a whole bunch of merchandise that you guys can buy so whatever you like buy it love it wear it and enjoy it and help spread the word of mix garage and if you have some time check out a picture in page we have extra content and you guys could watch it and take it from there and we'll see you next time [Music] [Music]
