Tiny Apartment Makeover | DIY Dream Kitchen!

[Music] in the hills of western massachusetts lies a quaint little mill town where the train rolls through every day blasting its horn sending echoes of old america through the streets and right where the appalachian trail dumps off the mountain lies an old brick building across from the waterfall with a few shops a restaurant and some apartments so i've lived in this tiny apartment for about three years and i've done a lot of work to it because i believe investing in your space can be life-changing but this last round of renovations went above and beyond my expectations [Music] first i'm going to show you what it looked like before this is from last winter facing east and this is facing west the place is small basically a hallway with a kitchen a bathroom and a bedroom but it has everything we need and it's cozy and we love it though after cooking more this winter we realized just how small dark and dysfunctional the kitchen was it made cooking a drag and the last thing you wanted to do after a long day's work so i was determined to create a space that made cooking more enticing and one night while i was painting a mounting board for a new pull-up bar in our little gym area i had an idea paint the cabinets white that would be cheap and easy and brighten the entire place up and then while we were cleaning out the closets and the rest of the place i was brainstorming and i took it a step further what if the cabinets were open shelves that would make it feel a bit bigger and allow us to see all our ingredients every time we walked in there to cook so with that simple plan we were off we cleaned out the entire kitchen making the rest of the apartment a mess and worked late into the night painting the cabinets white these are the kind of projects i always dreamed of staying up late with good music playing drinking whiskey and working on your own space with your own two hands and so the cabinets took multiple coats over multiple days and after we saw how good they looked the ugly countertop only became more pronounced and deeper down the rabbit hole we went there was a lot of dreaming a lot of what ifs what if we did subway tile what if we did butcher block what about a bigger more usable sink well back to the idea that investing in your space can be life changing i concluded that the opportunity to try doing all the things we dreamed of would be worth it just for the learning experience [Music] so i went to home depot and bought a slab a butcher block and i ordered a new black sink and faucet on amazon to contrast the white cabinets we were bringing every idea we had the fruition exactly the way we wanted [Music] [Applause] so and though our aspirations seemed overwhelming at first going step by step was proving to work and things were starting to come together and then began the stage that everyone warned us against that widened the eyes of innocent home depot employees who offered handfuls of alternatives and were visibly sad when we insisted we wanted to go through with it we started tiling though we couldn't change the size of the space we could at least make it feel like our dream kitchen aesthetic through all these little changes and also give ourselves a lot more counter space by reorganizing and rearranging everything and so we did subway tile with black grout to complement the black and white color scheme we had going and while we were waiting between drying stages of tile application i cut more counter sections and alley stained them with butcher block oil we also chipped away at building the gym in the back corner of the apartment and after over a week of hectic madness the vision was nearly complete and i learned all sorts of new stuff along the way all by watching youtube videos [Music] different kitchen you just go like this and after a few final touches our new apartment was done [Music] complete with home gym a reading chair that looks out toward the mountains and a kitchen that you want to spend time in new counters a new big sink new faucet magnetic knife holder fruit basket sodastream no more microwave or toaster oven all ingredients and clear jars ready to be used and overall an inspiring place to be in that makes us excited to cook but most important the experience and memories that come with doing something yourself [Music] [Applause] [Music] you
