[Applause] foreign foreign [Applause] s welcome to this episode of the outdoor gear review today I'm out for an exploration roughly five years ago I came out to this area for the second time and I did a camp out here it was on Christmas Day and it was cold like around 10 degrees since that point in time this place has popped in my mind here and there and I was curious what does it look like today five years later in this episode we're gonna find out and along the way I'm going to share a story about a hiking trip a camping trip that I did with a friend of mine maybe 12 years ago to this location foreign with the trip that I did out here maybe five years ago-ish you could watch that Adventure if you want to it's on my channel the trip that I did maybe 12 years ago it was far more interesting with that trip I came out here with a friend of mine and we parked maybe seven eight miles away we hiked all the way out here at the time we had no idea where we were going to go we were just out to explore so we came across this road and we started hiking I remember that day just being hot in it 80 degrees high humidity nothing but full on sun so along the way we're just sweating our brains out going through all of our water and by the time we got to this location we were tired we were spent I don't remember exactly how long this road is what I remember is that there's like three separate fields we camped at the first one there was a water source there on that Adventure you can imagine that okay we're hiking this everything here was green and leafed out and we were tired we were done hiking for the day so we're looking for a campsite let's stop with the story time for a second let's talk about the conditions currently it's raining it's about 48 degrees and I can tell that this area has been mowed some sort of tractors come down here and mode all this sometime back in the fall that's actually pretty nice folks when I came out here with my buddy 12 years ago or so it was nothing but Briars all over the place High Grass and tons and tons of ticks [Applause] I remember getting to Camp setting up my tent and looking down and there were ticks all over me like five or six that was about the time that I discovered Permethrin which is a pesticide that you could spray on your clothing you could spray it on your gear the military uses it it will kill ticks and just about any other insect that comes into contact with it it is completely safe for humans the thing is you do not put it on your skin I have videos discussing Permethrin how to use it not only on your clothing but with your gear if you're interested it was because of that trip that I went out looking for something and luckily I found Permethrin it definitely changed my life as far as the outdoors go and that's especially true as ticks have become more prevalent in the area when I was a kid we did not have ticks here and now they are everywhere [Applause] [Applause] Thunder tell you what let's stop here for a second let's take a look here at the radar I do have service I want to see where this storm is at where it's going we have storms along a front that's coming in that's to our West these storms are headed our way but they're not going to get here anytime soon we have time good because I have so much time before the storms get here I'm not going to put on my rain pants right now it's just too dang hot I'm gonna wait till the last second to put them on my friend he had a Deuter backpack and I don't remember the size of it but it was way too small I mean it fit him but for the amount of gear that he had in that thing way too small so we're hiking along and that backpack is literally bursting at the seams like all of this stitching is busting his gear is starting to fall out it was hilarious he had to have had like 50 pounds he had like an entire loaf of bread peanut butter oh let's see he had this gigantic pot he had beans hamburger meat we ate good that night and the next morning but it was a crazy amount of food and supplies that he had he also had this gigantic tarp that he made himself it was hilarious the company Deuter ultimately fixed that backpack for him they stood by their warranty lifetime warranty no questions asked that's pretty impressive foreign this area is beautiful folks and this is the time of year that I like to explore it in the warmer months this is snake Central copperheads rattlesnakes they are everywhere out here it's interesting the elevation isn't all that different from where I live but there's something it's a little hotter a little bit more humidity not sure whatever it is it makes it a Haven for snakes A friend of mine has a nice Rattler necklace he found a dead rattlesnake and cut the tail off and he found it out here we're not too far away from where I almost stepped on that huge timber rattlesnake that was an intense moment [Music] that was without a doubt one of the most intense moments that I've had on the channel I mean inches away from having a big big problem timber rattlesnakes are not very aggressive but their venom is bad news and I was so close to that snake I almost stepped on him there's nothing like a hundred thousand dollar hospital bill and the potential for death to really you know wake you up to really get you to focus on what you're doing thank you foreign by the way everyone this video should be going up after the new year how has your 2023 began is it off to a good start as for myself it has not begun yet at the time of filming this video it is New Year's Eve the conditions today are perfect for a Day hike so I figured I would come out go down memory lane explore make a video and share it with you all then go home and spend the evening with my family we are going to watch movies play video games maybe have a few beers who knows it's gonna be a good night though I'm coming across the first tracks that I've seen and they are horse tracks someone's been riding their horse out here maybe a week ago something like that foreign take off some layers it's too hot there's no point of wearing a rain jacket if you're going to soak yourself in sweat you know what I mean oh man that feels so much better oh yeah it doesn't sound like that Storm's getting any closer it's still over there I know it is getting closer though it's just very very slow [Music] I have my rain pants and I'm keeping them on top of this pack but underneath the lid that way I can access them very quickly if I need to foreign that is so much better I thought to burst into flames [Music] I should mention this everyone like with the rain here it's so light that I could go without the shell the rain pants with these fjall Raven pants they do a good job of not only being like water resistant with a good dwr treatment but they dry very quickly so it's a nice combination even on wet days you just have to be smart pay attention to the temperature don't get soaked have some common sense and you'll be all right continue around here somewhere is that first field I do have a map but I'm gonna wait I'll use it if I need it this might be it actually I'm hearing running water I think it is it if this is the right place there should be a creek on this side a road that goes up onto the hill oh yes we'll go up there in just a second I want to see this Creek real quick yeah yeah this is it we have the big Culvert down there let's go back and go up this road here foreign habitat Improvement Wildlife U.S Wildlife Resources without a doubt you can see that this has been cleared here my buddy and I we camped right here my tent was right here and my buddy he set up his gigantic tarp right here now when we did this none of this was mowed so all of the grass was super tall ticks everywhere tons and tons of them my friend had that tarp that homemade tarp and it was gigantic it was huge he had to have I don't know like 12 sticks big long sticks to set it up it took him like two hours I kid you not I set up my tent in like 10 minutes and then went off and explored while you set that up I offered to help but he didn't want it hey that's how it goes nothing wrong with that so we camped out here had a good night the next day I wake up pop my head out and I look down here and there's this dark shape kind of human shaped but really really big kind of odd that's when I notice it's coming towards me right I get my boots on I hop out to go approach it it's a guy in a Ghillie suit he was coming out this way to do some hunting so we talked to him for a second he went down to another field and that was that that guy was very serious about his hunting I've never seen anyone wear a ghillie suit before not civilian anyway not for hunting let's head back down to the road here and let's keep on going when we get back to this point I'll continue talking about our adventure here because with that trip that morning when we headed off it went to Crazy Town oh man [Music] going upon my rough memory of this place there's two more Fields I think I could be wrong about the number of fields there's at least one more that I know for sure [Music] [Music] looking at the tracks on the ground I could tell that there were two horses and also some turkeys have gone through here anytime that I'm out hiking I like to pay attention to the small details for one thing being observant is very important not only in the outdoors but your day-to-day life that is what's going to keep you safe with enough experience you could tell where people have gone sometimes what they're doing it really can be good valuable information to have foreign one of the writers got off they had their dog with them [Music] so here we have it looks like potentially another Trail [Applause] this would be Road number 4013. I do somewhat remember that road it looks like up here we have another field that's number two just another field also there's an Old Logging Road over here very old hmm let's keep on keeping on thank you with it being 2023 what are your resolutions for the year are you going to get out hike more work more work less travel the country go do something crazy get a tattoo what are you going to do personally I'm excited about the year I cannot wait to get out and travel more this year I want to travel Susie and I usually do about two to three big trips a year this year I want to do four four big trips that might not be possible but that's what I want to do as far as self-improvement goes hmm there's not much I really want to do to be honest I guess I could always eat better everybody could comment down below everyone what are you going to do in 2023 it's really funny everyone's geeky and nerdy about something for example I like outdoor gear and I also like cameras some people like cars Automotive stuff and that's okay it's just something else to be geeky about hmm so we have something down here I'm going to assume it's another field it's pretty humorous when I got the Land Cruiser at some point in time in one of the videos where I was talking about it I must have said that the Land Cruiser has an inline V6 I think that's what I've said that's funny because it makes no sense at all the inline part is in reference to the cylinders and how they're in line so it's an inline six cylinder and I would say inline V6 everyone knows what I'm talking about but of course there's a few Geeks out there who want to you know jump on that which they can they have the right too it's pretty funny anytime someone writes in about Automotive whatever whatever they might as well be writing in and telling me how fast their hard drive is on their computer it goes back at being geeky I could talk about like cameras that I'm interested in because let me tell you there are some new cameras coming out that have me quite excited namely the Panasonic Lumix S5 II and the X model I love Panasonic I love Lumix cameras the colors the imagery everything's so sharp but for the longest time they're auto focus just terrible just terrible I would love to go back to Panasonic and this might be the year I could talk to you about their autofocus and the previous systems with the contrast based Solutions which suck so then we could talk about the face all right foreign [Applause] so far with this trip I am thankful that the rain has held off it's misting but it's not bad it's actually quite enjoyable today plus I can still hear that Thunder if I'm lucky I'll be able to go down come back have lunch and get out of here before they hit that line of storms is moving that slow it is water time for me I've been on this Trail for at least a mile I'm not really keeping track of the distance or anything like that foreign I can hear running water sounds like a small stream okay looking at the radar here rain is coming so should I put on my rain pants now I'm going to folks I'll bring you all back in just a minute it's very close so I better not waste any time perfect timing rain pants on new battery in camera and it's now raining okay get my hood ready I'm making sure to fold it down like this that way the rain won't fall into it nothing is worse than having a hood full of rain water you go to put it on you just dump cold water all over yourself runs down your back finally no more drizzle actual rain and it feels fantastic even with the temp around 48 degrees still warm but this is cooling me down for sure all right with the rain that's falling this is not part of that front I mean it is but the Leading Edge of that front is not here yet this is just a pop-up shower popping up ahead of that front a few weeks ago negative 16 degrees Fahrenheit with 60 mile an hour winds today it's almost 50. and it's January that's so messed up so far unfortunately this winter has been rather poor not cold no snow it is what it is you may be wondering how I knew it was going to rain how I knew to check the radar that's because of an app called my radar I'm not sponsored I don't care if you get it it's free there's a paid version I have the free version it does a good job of alerting you before weather hits so I had a notification that said rain 15 minutes foreign hmm we have another road look at the size of those ruts this area does see a lot of rainfall so that does not surprise me last year this area received roughly 70 inches of rain I was hoping to explore more today but unfortunately it took so much time to get out here about two hours of driving because of that I want to head to the end of this and then we'll turn around we have made it This Is the End I was thinking this went down to the creek but maybe it doesn't there is this let's follow this for a second see where it goes well see that's what happens after five years your memory does fade a little bit I need to stop and check my map I also need to see how much time do I have left before it gets dark okay so it's 405. I'm opening up Gaia GPS so we are much further away from the creek than I thought I don't know where this goes but it's not going to take us where I thought it was going to I'm going to turn around start heading back and we'll find a place to set up the tarp and have a late lunch making it to the creek was going to be the grand payoff for this trip but unfortunately we better play it safe this is not the area to fool around in this is a Wilderness Area not a national park and that does make a difference when it comes to the trails in Wilderness areas oftentimes they're just paths they can be poorly blazed and that's certainly the case with this this is part of a larger trail system unfortunately people go missing in this area all the time in fact there's a missing hiker out here somewhere right now I'm going to begin hiking back we'll stop we'll have lunch and I will continue to tell you all about my hike and camp out here roughly 12 years ago update time my friends I'm almost back to the very first field that's where I'm going to stop and have a late lunch and I do mean late it's almost five o'clock I am done hiking for now at least perfect timing too the fog is lifting there's some blue sky it's nice [Applause] thank you foreign there's nothing like sitting in the rain everyone perfect conditions really roughly 48 degrees light drizzle peaceful and quiet this is a good way to bring in the New Year for lunch let's see I am having a beef pasta marinara Peak refuel meal foreign [Applause] it's raining all right but this is just a quick shower we have nothing but Blue Sky over here [Applause] everyone should go out and sit in the rain or go hike in the rain at least cheers everyone cheers oftentimes when you have a front coming through you'll have stuff just like this happen you'll have like a wave of rain Blue Sky then you have the storms behind it coming in while I have my lunch here my very very late lunch figured I would talk with you all about boxing the boxing that I used to do I've received some questions about that so I figured I would tell you all a little bit and the reason why I got into it so I got into boxing in my early 20s I got into it so I can learn control learn how to like control my anger primarily so throughout my entire life I've always been like this kind peace loving but as soon as someone did something to me it's like I would explode right there was no middle ground it was like all or nothing to the end I'm going to win that sort of thing I would take a situation that was beginning to escalate and I would just drop a nuclear bomb on it and after having a few fights when I was younger I realized I had to get control of that before it really got me in trouble back then when I was younger people got away with stuff a lot more than you do now some people wouldn't think that's true but it is the crazy stuff we got away with when I was younger unreal yeah there was an instance in high school and this is actually around the time that I met Susan and I've talked about this story before but I was having a conversation with her and also I was like dating this other girl and like her brother came up to me and I guess he was mad that I was talking to Susie and uh he said something to me and that didn't bother me and I remember turning around and like walking away and like he hit me he like punched me in the back and so like I mean I just saw red like I came to and I was slamming his head into a window and like choking him out and like I remember like Susie saying something to me like oh my gosh I mean it was just such an escalation you know what I mean there's another instance with a friend of mine who's still a friend today uh let's see I don't remember exactly what we were arguing about but he spit on me he spit my face and I again just saw red like I came to and I slamming his head into the ground and I was spitting all over him it's funny that we're still friends to this day and we are stupid but um yeah and then there was other instances as I got older outside of high school I've mentioned that I used to work at a factory and I would take absolute notes and anytime that was even joking around playing around if I said I don't want to be involved in this I don't want to play whatever leave me alone I meant it and there was this one time where this guy yeah it doesn't matter forget that story again it was just the same situation I just absolutely blew up dropped a nuclear bomb on the situation after these instances I realized I have to get control of this not being able to control yourself and just blow up like a nuclear bomb it's not a good thing that's why I got into boxing and I loved it I would still be doing sunboxing if it wasn't for having like um my deviated septum uh corrected after that you really can't box anymore you really can't get hit in the face because like they have to remove bone and whatnot by the way I had that procedure done while I was awake most of the time they put you under that was interesting let's give this a shot beef pasta marinara here we go it's okay the flavor is good but there's like mozzarella cheese in it and as you can see there just sticks to everything I started taking some boxing classes fast enough hands good strength but overall my movements is just slow I've always been like very very stiff I'm like a stick figure and that really doesn't work too well for for boxing [Applause] it was a lot of fun taught me a lot and it taught me to get control of my emotions and my anger and that is the greatest benefit that I received from it also like the physicality of it is great is in my opinion that every guy should take some sparring lessons at least once or twice get punched in the face a couple of times that way you can like move past the fear of it the simple fact is most people are afraid to fight that fear of getting punched in the face and having it hurt stops a lot of people from I don't want to say doing what's right but it does hold people back in instances where maybe they shouldn't does that make sense do you understand what I'm talking about to be honest everyone this beef pasta marinara it's not that great to the viewer who sent this in thank you so much I do appreciate it I think their other meals are better than this one this one's really Plain Jane I mean it's just noodles tiny little meatballs a lot of grease and some like cheese bits I'm going to finish up this coffee pack everything up take off my rain pants I think I should be able to make it back before the storms hit it's time to wrap up this adventure I want to finish telling you all my tale because so far the trip that I was on with my buddy it sounds good it sounds pleasant it goes to miserable town in the second day as soon as we hit the trail it was awful [Applause] folks let's hike out of here and while doing so I'll finish up the story in the morning we woke up to the guy in the ghillie suit down here we had coffee breakfast we packed up and it was right about here as we're hiking out we hear thunder right we're like oh we were prepared for rain but that's not what we had expected so we stopped we put on our rain gear I had this big Poncho that I put on my buddy he had a rain jacket rain pants it's once we got to the road up here that's when it started to pour and folks it rained and stormed the entire time that we hiked so after I don't know four or five miles my buddy he's getting chafed I'm pretty sure I was getting chafed too now that I think about it even with our rain gear like the sweat and the rain it was coming down so heavy I mean our clothing was beginning to rub us raw so we keep on hiking we're absolutely miserable it's also quite cold we start making our way downhill yes so as we're hiking down we hear a car coming up the road and the guy was hauling ass right he comes up he pulls next to us he puts down his window and he says boys you all look like you can use a cold beer hops out of his vehicle pops the trunk and gives us both ice cold beer my buddy and I took our packs off we sat down on the side of the road and we drank those beers that was the best beer I've ever had in my entire life I'll never forget that guy that was so funny we were at our lowest point so miserable soaking wet that was funny in the end everyone that was our trip from hell it was miserable in so many ways but at the same time incredibly rewarding good friendship Good Times a whole bunch of misery thrown in there plus we made it through this camping trip and we have stories to tell you know what I mean sometimes that's what it's all about I'm going to finish hiking out of here everyone thank you so much for joining me for this trip I appreciate it I hope you all have enjoyed going down memory lane with me the trip from Hell super miserable but at the same time super fun with the story spread out it doesn't sound that bad but when you throw in all the elements at once so it was super hot super humid then we wake up start storming on us we get soaking wet we get super chafed mile after mile which is Agony we both would just take turns stopping just trying to find a little bit of comfort I have a whole bunch of shout outs to do but I will do them in the next episode I need to focus on getting out of here rather quickly it's about to get dark I do have my headlamp if I need it if I hurry I won't have to dig it out make sure to comment down below and share your most miserable trip or you can email me if you want to what is your trip from hell make sure to share take care my friends be safe out there here's to a wonderful 2023 [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Applause] thank you [Music] [Applause]
