hello there everybody this is Mel Allen do you want to learn baseball son then catch these ABCs ms format seize the miracle clones P is for Phillies and put outs at home [Music] f-for Fernando with his fade away pitch Oh for the Oakland still striking it rich t is for Tigers burning bright in the east and ABCD efis it takes all kinds they take swings and sways coming up on this week in baseball [Music] [Applause] National League pennants the LA Dodgers a pretty fair ball club and whitey Herzog's st. louis cardinals squared off in st. Louis with Darryl Porter back behind the plate and arms porter quickly showed why he's been missed along the mighty Mississippi meanwhile Tom Lasorda chatted with injured all-star second baseman Davey Lopes while watching rookie replacement Steve sax and in for a few games Sachs wailed away at the right pitch here and beat Bob Stitt out of Birdland and outside the Parker older Dodgers swing men like Braun say we're in the mood for playing in the key of D for defense like say hey man and Wow of course Steve Garvey now playing on beyond 900 straight games and prefers to play it straight straight over the fence for example this Homer was good enough for Jerry royce who pitched a choice game against the cardinals blanking them to win game number 7 and that gave al a 13 shutouts this season tops in the majors the Dodgers took two out of three and Darryl Thomas removed all doubt in their other victory a three-to-two squeaker benefitting from the Thomas tater Fernando Valenzuela who had the Cardinals singing the blues [Music] 12 strikeouts for El Toro who finally won his 10th game his first since June 1st still since baseball came back it's the Atlanta Braves have been setting the Western pace a double dose of Bob Horner power was administered against Montreal and a double-header six four nine two homers five RBIs but really capturing the imagination of Atlanta fans rookie Brett Butler and frankly my beer he should have them feigning the Isles if he keeps hitting like this now he's not Rhett Butler he's Brett Butler but given a chance to run he could write the next draft of Gone with the Wind at any rate Clark Gable never made plays like this especially on the baseball diamond our throws like this one to save a two-to-one victory but reliever Rik camp has been the biggest hero in Atlanta's reconstruction though his string of consecutive scoreless innings was finally snapped to 25 Kemp had 13 saves all together giving the Braves of first place hit ground in the West in the East the Philadelphia Phillies reentered the pennant picture last year's world champions and this year's first half winners managed to keep their motivation high despite losing manage to Dallas Green who was suspended indefinitely for bumping an umpire we're in the playoffs already I don't have to win another game but we've the Phillies have a great amount of pride in themselves we we want to prove 1980 wasn't a fluke we want to prove that we are one of the best teams in baseball the only way you can do that is to win ever since last year's playoff series the Houston Astros have won nothing from Philadelphia Gary Matthews and his 300 bat is the only major personnel change for the Phillies since then but this year everything seems to have changed between the two clubs unlike the seesaw battles of the championship series Houston Philadelphia confrontations have been one-sided affairs with the Phillies winning six of six including a recent three-game sweep at the back while Houston tries to knock Philly off its high horse staunch defenders such as Manny Trillo saying nothing doing some clutch plays of the plate spelled the difference last year this year the Phillies keep rerunning those plays [Music] [Applause] Keith Morman Philadelphia's future behind the plate made himself feel very present with two homers to help beat the Astros in one game and that made a nine-game winner of dick Ruthven a key figure in Houston's denial of a pennant last year and from the astrological point of view or anyone elses Mike Schmidt just can't be charted man he keeps blasting away 21 homers 61 RBIs leading the majors and this one's our Grand Slam Todd McGraw is once again pulling down the final curtain McGraw helped Steve Carlton earn his tenth win as they shut out the Astros to complete the sweep while improving Philly prospects of winning both ends of the split season meanwhile the New York Mets are out to win their end of the bargain and they just tanden round they're getting a real feel for things [Music] who's making this metamorphosis of Joe Torre a winner well some are familiar bedrooms like shortstop Frank Taveras other side.now Frank thank you and of course Dave King the power source come turn two feet around with this eight bending grand slammer against Cincinnati tying him with Johnny Bench and Willie Stargell for most career slams by an active player 11 for the first time since 1973 when they won a pennant the Mets won two straight in Cincinnati doing it the hard way [Music] [Applause] redhot Neil Allen saved both victories in seven appearances Allen was untouchable saving five and winning the other two that also meant he had taken a hand in 16 of the Mets first 25 wins in both games the Reds appeared headed for victory tom seaver well-versed in past mets mischief saw this bad 9th inning streak working his favor [Music] but in the tenth inning reserve Bob bailor stepped up with another runner at third [Music] again a play at the plate but this time he is safe leading three to two Neil Allen faced slugging George Foster with two down now watch Bob Baylor how about that big through the hard way folks but it's been working pretty well for the somewhat amazing New York Mets now time for this week's Volkswagen quiz brought to you by the 1981 models Volkswagen does it again veteran reliever Mike Marshall joined his ninth big league team recently the New York Mets and this week won his first ballgame in more than a year in 1974 Marshall set a national league record with a hundred and six appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers now can you name the pitcher who holds the American League record for most games in the season stay tuned American League East second season realignment pennant Bieber strikes the Motor City the Detroit Tigers with Sparky Anderson directing traffic have put the pedal to the metal Steve Kemp keeps the Tigers pairing along also get some good long-distance mileage on occasion while other Bengals keep refueling an offense of interchangeable parts Richie Hebner for example is one of many workers to deliver a winning number on Detroit's high-rolling wields of the top but the real difference is pitching send your smoke Aurelio Lopez changed friends from bullpens of starting four and proved he could still blow mine and Kevin soshe the possessed one continues to leave the league's hottest bullpen with 12 saves and an ER a around one run per nine now that sublime and helping to secure Detroit's rapidly improved mound work the steadiest and radius defensive patrolled in the league citizen banded and surehand after the Tigers had turned over eight straight wins they trailed Texas four to three in the ninth inning Lynn Jones the batter a 300 hitter with little power so he said but there is deep Dilla field and that ball is going going at his dog Jones second home of the year and it ties the score then pinch-hitter Rick Peters 1 for 24 in the second half got a break Steve Kemp brings home the bacon for the sizzling Tigers ninth straight wins and 20th than 25 Abby's giving Detroit a heartening lead in the first laps of the second season in the American League East in the American League West the hot hand moved to the Oakland A's winner of five straight thanks to the wages of philly ball should the A's win twice they'll still play again in a playoff but Billy Martin isn't about to cry overs no I think we deserve it because we're that much ahead of everybody else what that doesn't necessarily mean it will go right in the World Series I'd like to win the second half too so open keeps reaching for the heights in this macabre season and the left-field one man continues to have run just about everyone and everything Rickey Henderson [Music] also still on target the long ball Tony Armas who's hitting close to 400 with men in scoring position Armas raised his Homer total to 17 and grabbed the RBI lead with 53 one glaring weakness in Oakland's kitty core pitching staff had been the bullpen but Bob pochenko helped it come out of the shade Oh tinkle was a-ok leading the league in ara and leading the league in complete games is Rick Langford who keeps the bullpens in the bullpen Langford shut out the Orioles for his thirteenth complete game of the season and 41st in his last 48 starts other starters like Matt tío with an 8-3 record keep making opens pitching statistics the classiest in the majors yes sir seems like the A's intend to graduate with honors in the American League West weather first semester or second semester [Music] [Applause] as for last year's champion Kansas City Royals they've had a tough time contending for either pennant 1st or 2nd manager Jim Frey who must have wanted to chew out his guys more than once this year met up for the New York Yankee ballclub which the Royals had swept away in the championship series less than a year ago both clubs had struggled up late but the Royals got the early jump in the opener of the three-game series in New York Yankee killer Larry Gura continues his hypnotic spell over New York sleeping bats with a three-hit shut up for his seventh victory of the season but after that playing the defending champion Royals seem like silly kid stuff for the Yankees Casey made more than a chair of misappropriations [Music] now catch this royal headache Willie Wilson takes it on the beam and Larry Milburn takes advantage Milburn's first homer compliments of Kansas City given five runs Rick Russell pitched six trend shutout innings for his first win in pinstripes and given eight runs the next day Ron Guidry pitched seven shutout innings for his eighth victory in three second season starts Guidry has in the latter on but overall the early second season had been a white watch for both New York and Kansas City now back to this week's Volkswagen quiz Mike Marshall in 1979 established an American League record when he pitched a 90 game the Minnesota Twins that's of course the same Mike Marshall who set the national league record five years earlier with the Dodgers a rare instance where one player holds the same record and I ask you again Eastern on FS 1 what is that Oh mine Wow it's just that it's lavender yes it is it's for men [Music] after 225 years you think we'd look to our past looking to our future where we're innovating every day to raise Jim beef for 225 years to come social distancing doesn't have to make us distant right after all cars were invented to bring us closer together so car max is doing everything we can to keep you going and that's the way it should be [Music] [Applause] if you were like 58% of Americans see you never went to college or you did but never finished why it was just a hassle going back and forth to campus at Independence University all classes are online no driving to campus no one at the college even knew my name independence you you'll get a personal support team and they'll all know your name too many extra costs like books fees parking we don't have extra costs we even give you a new laptop and tablet to keep when you graduate I couldn't fit my schedule around classes at independence you college fits your schedule four plus years to get a degree with us you could finish in three at a typical college no one cares caring about students is what we do best Independence University held my hand through the process don't be afraid to take the leap because it has changed my life drastically if I did it you can do it too independence U is designed for busy adults like you one eight hundred three four six zero eight seven zero one eight hundred three four six zero eight seven zero hey there partner if you're looking for some high times you're looking the wrong way another way pal see Dave LaRoche is playing this funny game with Willie Wilson now watch [Music] dang dip Willie knew but they called it a ball this old-fangled pitch has been called a blooper and an eephus but called that when the strike thank you trying to him what do you think they [Music] you can do that you know on 3rd strikes but now he feels guilty like it didn't really deserve to get there LaRoche agrees and says you don't mind I'll take that back gotcha now there's a true victim of the gluten looping along now to Cincinnati the New York Mets were really playing the field I mean the whole thing mave concepción figures two's enough but the Mets figure a bit different such generosity but the Mets aren't finished yet finally someone backs it up and wisely decides to just hold on to the dumb ball now hear this the defense does not always rest witness these exhibits and judge accordingly guarding the outer courtyard Harold Baines Chicago White Sox [Music] Rickey Henderson Oakland Jean Richard San Diego [Music] Tom Paciorek see all inadmissible the inner court Dan Driessen Cincinnati [Music] Manny Trillo Philadelphia [Music] [Applause] Ozzie Smith Sandiego rain night Cincinnati the New York Mets Frank Taveras rounds of class-action armed for defense Gary Matthews Mickey rivers Texas Jeff Burroughs Seattle to Gary great Jerry Maren case closed and the defense rests moving now to the lower courts and a serious case in stolen bases Jeff stone of the Phillies class a Spartanburg farm club beat Miguel genin A's league record of 95 stolen bases and had 115 with just six games to go the all-time record is 120 and the twenty-year-old stone still had a chance not bad for a guy no one bathroom and right up from a ball can't her back for the Minnesota Twins recipient of this week's to that special in his first major league game Hrbek got his first RBI against the Yankees in New York a native of Minneapolis the young first baseman made quite a leap from Class A ball my mom and dad were home and they had a bunch of people who write their place last night Washington on TV and yeah I guess it was pretty exciting around Bloomington was pretty pretty wild last night especially after the 12th inning is over so so in the 12th Kent found himself batting with a game tied at 2 all George Frazier delivered and so did her back deep to right-center going going it's gone how about that a game-winning homer to beat the Yankees in his major league debut now that is something to talk about now let me tell the guys at least he went out during batting practice and last night I got the call everybody told him I hit went on during the game so it was pretty exciting congratulations Kent and see you next week folks on this week in baseball [Music] you
