if your guitarist over 40 well for me over 50 and pushing 60 you know that we need all the help that we can get to simplify things but to still keep things sounding great and maybe even make them sound better well today I'm going to show you three simple shapes to do just that and the bonus they're really easy to play so they're great for stiff fingers as well as easy to remember and you know what this works for people under 42. you know I have a guitar teacher friend who really gets down on students for running through scales each day and he does have a point he says it's like saying your ABC's over and over each day we wouldn't do that right but I can relate to playing scales each day because I did it for a while it wasn't fun but you know I just couldn't remember the scales like I did the alphabet so I did it over and over and sure I know my scales I know this one and this one and this and this and this but when you add it all up you get this and that just kind of scares me and frankly makes me want to stay in one place of the neck and just hang out for a while now I'm not proud of this but I think it's pretty common to know some places really really well in other places not so well so we just favor those places we play in our favorite position for a while then we move to another position that we know pretty well hang out there for a while then we move right back but I found a simple solution one that made my play a lot easier sounded better and made it a lot more fun of course it involves Triads my favorite why because they're super simple they're easy to see small chunks of information that you can easily move across the fretboard and they won't tax your memory cells so with that Spirit today we're going to keep it super simple I just want you to get started because I know if you're like me you don't want to give up your beloved pentatonic I know you don't have to I'll show you how you can use it with your pentatonic and without one last note before we get started you've got to be able to hear the chord changes so if you're not used to doing that start listening to the chord changes and don't start with something complex like yes it's close to the edge start with Chuck Berry's Johnny Be Good all right make sure you can hear those chord changes now let's go so in the spirit of keeping this simple but still useful we're going to do only major Triads and only confine ourselves to the D G and B strings all right so here we go let's take a look at our example we're going to do this in a here are three shapes our first shape is going to be around the fifth fret here it is [Music] we've got our root on the D string and a we've got our third on the G string the C sharp and we've got our fifth on the B string and E so that's our first shape let's go to our second shape [Music] in this case we've got our root on the B string our third on the D string and our fifth on the G string let's go to our third shape [Music] here we've got our root on the G string our third on the B string and our fifth on the D string now here's where I'm supposed to talk about inversions but you know what I'm not going to the reason why is because you don't need to know that to get started and make music with it and enjoy so you just need those three patterns now let's make sure that you can get those patterns in different keys so let's do an E chord instead of an a chord all right now let's find those three shapes for E they may not be in the same order or place as a but they're going to have the same shape here we go check it out here's one of them foreign this one has its root on the B string here's another one [Music] this one has its root on the G string and finally here's another one [Music] this one has its root on a d string [Music] all right so that's it super easy you got this for sure now let me show you how to use it there's a couple of different ways we can go over we're going to go over an example in the a blues so let's do it all right so the a blues 145 in a the one chord would be an a the IV chord would be a d and the V chord would be an e now let's take a look at what those simple Triads would be here's our a [Music] here's our d and here's our e [Applause] [Music] and we could carry this into the next position as well here's our a here's a d and here's an e [Music] and we could carry it through just for completeness here's our a here's our d and here's our e [Music] one thing you probably noticed was that no matter where you went on the fretboard all the cords were right there clustered together so you should have confidence that when you're on one Triad and you're moving to another it's going to be right there for you if you look all right let's talk about the first and easiest way you can introduce this into your play the one thing we could do is to integrate it directly into something that we already know so for example if we're playing in a blues foreign you probably know the Blues box in a right the minor pentatonic or the blues scale and integrate these chords into that as targets for where to land our lines where to end our lines so for example over a we could use that a as a Target like so right or when we get to the D chord we could use this this Triad as a Target like something like that where we're using that Target chord so another thing that's a little more difficult all right maybe a lot more difficult but not so hard to get started is to just play the blues using these chord shapes but then to find little things around those chord shapes that make them more musical or more interesting for you let me show you what I'm talking about [Music] thank you I just love doing it it's just a blast and I bet you'll have a lot of fun too now if you really want to get to do that second part and want to get better at it click on this video because in that video I show you lots of ideas for how to develop your ideas to be able to move around with chords it's really a blast and super easy once you get the hang of it so check out that video and we'll see on down the road
