[Music] hey Steve Stein from guitar zoom here and today what I'd like to do is show you a really fun and easy way of being able to play three of the most common open chords that you will play on this guitar which are the G and the C and the D chords now traditionally we learn how to play those like this we might have G with three fingers and then or four fingers like this whichever way is comfortable for you and then we have the C and the D but there's another way of being able to use these three cords together that's very economical it takes a little while to get used to just like anything else but you'll find that in popular music it's it's very very common and we can use these chords in substitution of regular G C and D chords as well so let's start off by just looking at the G chord we're gonna be using the four finger G like this so what I've got here is my first finger on the fifth string second fret my middle finger up here on the sixth string third fret my ring finger on the second string third fret and my pinky on the first string third fret okay now in order to make this effective and to do this correctly you really need to start off by learning how to play the four finger G like this now if you already knew how to play the three finger G there's no different name for this it's still just G you're just playing the same chord it's just a different voicing for a G chord you just have to trust me on that if you don't know your theory or anything like that so it's just a regular G chord but here's the cool part is when you want to switch to a C chord instead of switching over to this C well you can learn to do is just a popular shortcut which is taking these two fingers and simply moving them down one string like this so you're just taking those two fingers and moving them down these other two stay exactly where they are so when you go to strum it you want to avoid the sixth string you just want to play from the fifth string down and what makes it a nice sound in court is that you've got this continuity between the G all these thinner strings on the G and the C chord because it stays the same now this particular C chord has a specific name we refer to it as the C at 9 and again don't worry if you don't know what that means but that's what we call it but the truth is is if you came across a song where you needed to play just the song asked for a C chord you could play this C at 9 and it will work just fine the weird thing about guitar playing is there's a lot of gray areas and learning how to play like this isn't the only way to play a C chord on this guitar there's all kinds of different options for things and the longer you play the more you start realizing that so if the song asks for G you could play this if the song asked for C you certainly could play this but you could also just drop these two fingers down and play this C at 9 unapologetically you don't have to tell anybody hey I'm going to just play it and it'll sound just fine okay so then what we do is we're gonna move to the D chord from this C ad 9 for instance and what's really cool is this third finger is already in position to move to that D chord so what I teach people to do is just pivot on that third finger over to the D chord see I can leave that finger down over the G and the C and the D so as I'm playing chord progression it doesn't matter which order I play these chords in if I'm moving these around and playing a various chord progression ok this finger stays there the whole time and it helps me to move between the three chords so if I want [Music] I just leave that there and I shift in between them so D I'm playing four strings this see I'm playing five strings and this G placing strings [Music] so if you've never done that before I strongly encourage you to give it a try because it's a really fun and again common and popular way of being able to move those three cords together hey this is Steve Stein from guitar zoom thank you so much for watching this video if you enjoyed it please do me a favor like it and share it and also make sure that you subscribe to this channel so you're always notified when I release new videos
