This guy does some pretty great reviews on both clothing/gear and tents. Iโ€™ve watched a few of them in the past and his โ€œno agendaโ€ policy is pretty refreshing.

This reminds me of a hike I did with my niece. She had a super cheap single person A-frame. I had my new REI quarter dome 2. It rained at night, and was cold, as we were at 8500 feet. I woke to hear her crying, as her tent had leaked all night. She got no sleep, and was somewhat frozen. I felt bad. My tent was bone dry.

We had to power out the hike and skip the next night, as her tent and sleeping bag were so wet, there was no way they would dry in time, and more rain was visible on the horizon.

She has since bought a much better tent for our yearly hike! Like this guy says, you get what you pay for.

I bought on of the river country tents for $35 and sealed it all myself with $10 sealant.

It has worked flawlessly for several seasons. A little upkeep goes a long way.

Cheap tents are fine as long as you seam seal them.

everyone welcome to this episode of the outdoor gear review rain is on the way i have to move fast so i will talk fast what i have here is the stan sports appalachian dome tent two person the question that we will answer in this episode is it waterproof how does it handle moisture condensation ventilation and so on i cannot wait to see just how well this tent performs everyone let's find out together so here are the poles these are made from fiberglass and there are three of these rain is on the way ladies and gentlemen you could feel it all right everyone it is raining right now it's light but it started ah yeah lee guys these poles are so weak wow this is the fly and as you can see here it only covers the top vent the top mesh and nothing else it has been seam taped but i wonder what about the body there's a lot of seams here we will go inside in just a second and check it out now folks before we go any further you may be wondering why am i checking out a 35 tent that's because there's a lot of people out there who purchase tents just like this people out there have questions how waterproofer tends to run around 35 dollars well in this episode we are going to answer that question this is a product which i've had some requests to check out in fact a viewer sent this to me brand new completely sealed ready to go and i'm curious myself is this tent weatherproof we will find out together with this episode now my initial thoughts so far i'm not impressed with these tent poles at all they are extremely weak once you put them through the sleeves on the body they're too weak to even raise the body up so you have this really awkward raising when it comes to the poles here i'm not impressed with that the tent does come with some tent stakes that's good there's two guy lines that's good the fly on top is an interesting aspect i don't know if that will keep water out especially when you have this big piece of mesh that's a lot of exposed area that tells me already that this is not a tent that you want to use in a storm or in windy conditions because that rain will just blow right inside of this tent you do have a mesh window on this side you have the door on the other side my experience with other tents that have similar features is that these are weak points usually the vents the windows and the doors they're not seam sealed so water will ingress through there but of course we shall see unfortunately none of the seams have been taped inside of this tent not a single one you do have a bathtub floor but there's no seam tape at all you have all these exposed seams with no taping no ceiling so i suspect that this tint is going to leak quite substantially and that's a shame because when you go look at the product information for this tent it describes it as a strong wind and weather resistant tent it says specifically that it will keep the water out now i could be wrong i could be wrong but i think this tent is going to leak like crazy with this rain event this is going to last roughly 24 hours so it's going to start later on this afternoon all night long into tomorrow and that really is a good test for this tent with any sort of tent that you're considering to purchase it needs to be stormworthy it needs to be waterproof that is one of the most fundamental of elements when it comes to a tent it has to offer you protection will the stansport appalachian dome tent provide you with rain and storm protection we shall see everyone let it rain let it rain wish this tent good luck it will need [Applause] all right everyone we are out here with the stan sports appalachian dome 2 tent as you all can tell it is raining away nicely i wonder is the tent waterproof is it leaking when it comes to the rain fly when looking up here i don't see that anything is wet so far there's been no leaking let's go check out the other side so far it looks good everyone but the question is what about the inside this door here is soaked [Applause] so the rain is slacking off here for a second let's go ahead and open this up real quick and take a look inside [Applause] oh no whoa whoa so take a look at that everyone wow wow everyone this is absolutely ridiculous and this is why you do not buy a 35 tent the company claims it's strong it's waterproof people believe that stuff and they go out and buy this piece of crap then they take it out a little rain storm comes through like this it's only been raining maybe 40 minutes not very heavy and this tent is a pool it's a swimming pool that's wrong it's wrong in so many ways and stan sports should be ashamed of themselves this is ridiculous water is coming through every single seam on this tent and it's not okay with the stan sports appalachian 2 tent this should be called the appalachian playhouse because this is not a tent this is just a scam nothing more than that stuff like this really gets on my nerves because there's plenty of people who are out there looking for a tent they're newcomers to the outdoor space and they may consider something like this there's a lot of people out there who are thinking like oh no people don't do that but yes yes they do i hear from viewers all the time people asking about tents just like this and it's deceptive for stan sports to even call this a tent because this is just a piece of crap it's a 35 piece of junk the tent itself is so weak you can't even set it up with the bowls without it just collapsing that's ridiculous i mean how would this tent do in a windy environment oh well that's how it goes everyone and that is why we have these test night episodes okay so since the tent leaks i'm not going to stay in it but we might as well allow this to fill with water it's going to rain the rest of the night and tomorrow let's see how much water can collect inside of this let's see if it will become a swimming pool i went ahead and zipped it all up it's ready to go let's see what happens let's see what happens so here we are everyone it is time for an update on the dome tent it rained all night long it's continued to rain into the day the question is how much water is inside of this thing let's take a look [Applause] this is insane this tent is slowly but surely becoming a swimming pool this is too funny it really is it's funny but then again it's not you can see over here in the corner inches and inches of water there's just water everywhere so far with this rain event this has been pretty light stuff now later on this afternoon it is supposed to get heavy there may be some thunderstorms there may be some wind let's just leave the tin out let's just see how well it handles those conditions now my question becomes this how well does this handle wind i assume that it's going to do very poorly but we shall see together the tent is all guide out it's ready to go i think one of the weirdest aspects to this tent is this fly right here why did the company put this on here i mean the tent is not waterproof at all but yet this fly is this is waterproof i just don't get it i do not get it why make this product why make this waterproof when the rest of the tent is not i don't know i mean it just makes zero sense this tent began to leak the moment it began to rain maybe you all can explain it to me comment down below with the next update everyone i will tell you all my plans for this tent we're not done yet all right everyone i am back for the final update with the appalachian dome tent so the rain event is over it was a good one i would say maybe an inch and a half of rain fell over the course of a day and a half something like that it never did get windy we didn't have any storms but it rained so let's take a final look at the tent this is pretty funny everyone this entire tent is just soaking wet there's water everywhere this tint was a huge failure to be honest i expected this i expected this i wonder how much water has escaped through this material i would say quite a bit folks this tent sucks plain and simple we know already that this tent is not waterproof in fact it's not really a tent at all this is a playhouse for kids my question is now can we make this waterproof what do you all think about taking this tent we'll see him seal it treat it with nick wax let's try to make this 35 tent waterproof even with making this tent waterproof if that's possible i would not recommend this let me rephrase that do not go out and buy this tent for any reason let's have some fun with it but this is not a good tent this is not a good shelter this is a piece of crap for this episode of the outdoor good review that is it make sure to share your thoughts down below what do you all think about the appalachian dome tent what a piece of junk what a piece of junk for 35 this is what i expected it really takes about a budget of 150 to get a good waterproof tent anything below that generally just isn't trustworthy make sure to tell me if you agree or disagree everyone take care strength and honor hit the thumbs up it does help i will see you all again soon bye [Music] everybody [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you
