This Character Finally Broke Me - Therapist Plays Disco Elysium: Part 22

hello and welcome to my therapist plays disco elisium analysis series okay uh on today's episode I talked to the smoker on the balcony and his Sunday friend some of you can probably tell exactly how this is going to go for me if you have been watching this playthrough um and if you are new let's just say this Sunday friend character is kind of the embodiment of a part of this scum that I have found very challenging to uh engage with in this playthrough so far I'm sure some of you are going to find this interaction hilarious and others very frustrating um I'm right there with you so let's just get into it and get on with it okay let's uh continue here so I believe there's one more thing we should do before we go to bed for the day what was it it was to talk to the person on the roof the smoker on the balcony that's what it was sometime after 9: so perfect timing let's go see what's up with the guy who uh denied me my necessary cigarette smoke I I'm I'm still feeling a little bit bit vindictive about that uh that episode now we're trying to go on the straight and narrow even if he were to offer me a cigarette I don't I wouldn't want one okay there he is John dearie you found me the young man on the balcony gives you a bright smile before taking another drag from his cigarette yeah I'm still uh salty about that I thought that was your last Siggy buddy you going to tell me that you got a new pack in that time if feels like a Friday he seems to be in a good mood tonight and his shirt is still unbuttoned uh interesting detective work there Harry yes the cleaning lady let us in beautiful he replies smiling as he looks at you something sparkles in his eyes so tell me are you here to make things right again I kind of forget what our dialogue was with him my my only memory is still on the fact that he wouldn't give us a cigarette and that that was pretty ice cold um can't remember what else we talked about honestly I'm just trying not to screw anything up you know despite his uh lack of support for us in the cigarette Department I mean he he seems like a nice enough person maybe he'll respond to a bit of empathy I'm just trying not to screw things up beautiful a nearby Street Lamp casts Shadows on his chin drawing out the Slender cheekbones our uh character is very perceptive to this gentleman's good looks I have some good news for you my Sunday friend is visiting me tonight I told him about you and he'd like to say hello step in he already waiting Nots towards door 28 is it Friday tonight it feels like Friday yeah it does feel like the end of the week such gentle weather I'm sensing something in the atmosphere why would I want to meet your friend trust me you do okay uh very well I'll talk to him but first I want to talk to you I have so many questions that's nice but I don't have anything to tell you it's my friend you're looking for not me how would you know that he takes another drag of his unfiltered cigarette and looks around it's getting dark and the neighboring Windows have lit up one by one what I love about this game is it never like um denies you like a visual beat that changes the atmosphere despite like that not really happening in the scene it's a very like written Pros sort of technique like you know in a in a dialogue heavy scene or something in a novel like you get these moments of reestablishing the scene and and establishing like time passing and motion and those sorts of things and despite this being like a visual medium when it doesn't give the chance to show you like everything it'll it'll pause to give you these little um scene changes that's it's really nice besides I've got to run where are you going he's going to leave you alone again that's sad alone and sigus perhaps something tells you you're never going to talk to an individual this cool or mysterious ever again interesting he's like the polar opposite of Kim that's my first impression of this guy like one of the things that's so interesting about um Harry being like he's not a blank slate like I originally thought he would be he's a character with his own backstory but at the same time he's extremely impressionable Harry tends to experience a lot of like projection which I don't remember where I saw it described this way but it's the idea that like you think you're looking at a window but it's actually a mirror right so you're seeing qualities about other people and you think it's someone else but it's really your own qualities right and Harry tends to he starts to recall aspects of himself when he sort of sees them in other people when he sees Kim and he's like oh yeah this is what a police officer should look like this is how they stand this is how they talk this is what professionalism is supposed to be and that kind of not only reminds him of who he is but it it also clarifies what the standards are at the same time I personally I detect like a little bit of resentment whenever we're like scolded or asked to be more professional by Kim because it it reminds us of uh the fact that we're sort of not that and this individual like the just the way that we're encountering him it's like kind of confronting to Harry because you're never going to encounter an individual this cool or mysterious ever again like what he's looking at is seeing what does a person who looks Carefree look like sound like act like how do they talk to you they clearly he clearly doesn't see us as an authority figure right like um that's evident by the way that this person has talked to us and I think it's just a very different kind of interaction than we've seen before it's making us very curious run way to the city it's a beautiful night JS idly towards distant motorways a man on high heels stumbles out of a basement club music blasting over the entire District it's chilly and and as the chemicals hit his nervous system a thousand Shivers Ripple through his body H only if you promise that we'll talk again it's important something flutters in the corner of the Lieutenant's mouth as you're saying those words are you jealous Kim we'll talk just not tonight the smoker assures you brushing his hand through the hair take care all right a disarming smile well he certainly left an impression on us there's something so different about him that I can't put my finger on different of course he's such a good listener I like talking to him I kind of want to I want to poke and proud at him a little bit here perhaps this individual is confronting Harry with some of his um unexplored desires you like talking to him do not laugh at me Kim you're just jealous because you're a terrible listener I swear to God if he laughs at me it made me feel special it made you feel special yes it made me feel seen and heard and listened to something you would never understand he's barely holding it together I it's all he can do to keep from bursting out in laughter you know what come on detective let's go we've got a potential witness to interview his Sunday friend remember I I cannot believe you Kim at this point I feel like I feel like we're 10 years into a relationship where he's scolding me for things that I like we're just having common miscommunications and then I see someone that you know uh Sparks that sort of like uh spontaneity that uh can itic energy that Kim has not sparked in me for years and he finds it funny well you know what Kim you shouldn't find it funny you should find it threatening maybe maybe Kim [ __ ] maybe you should be asking yourself why you don't make me feel that way youever thought about that no you haven't because all you think about is the case I I'm still feeling very confused after our last episode and all these strange emotions I'm experiencing okay that's a lot of orbs let's let's click them this this magazine photo what do I got in here o a robe pocket that buckets of paint on a layer of old new I I love the idea of we're we're just coming in here you wait sir you wait I'll I'll I got to inspect this environment and make it sure it's safe get a hat that's that's a bed got some dishes there an ashtray empty ashtray and flyers interesting what do we got here got some sort of robe drama electrochemistry I feel like this is more important for me right now got a logic hat our our suggestions already way down want to pop that bad boy on could always use a little bit of a encyclopedia knowledge and um I've still got the tear bag which I do need to I need to make some more money probably for tomorrow's stay at the whirling and Rags but I don't know what uh this individual will hold for us so I'm going to arm myself with the Crowbar just in case okay friend Sunday friend officers of the Ral citizens militia like really just blasting them what do you know about the case you shouldn't be seeing him in an intimate setting for some reason you feel this man is your Superior superior but he's not in the command chain he looks all business his hands are clean and well manicured this is a man who knows the importance of appearances I see my name is Char V and I am an official with the coalition government I work for the Institute of price stability On Assignment from surley ah he's a politics guy I heard you talking to my friend outside very good super I am here to assist you in any way possible ask me about the hanging do you know who did it no let's ask him about our his friend can you tell me about your friend we'll ask him about the case but actually let's ask him about himself first what's an official like you doing in margin the Coalition is only looking out for the price stability inflation is a killer like a heart disease blocking the normal circulation of the economy it must be controlled the economy impacts the entire International Community which is why it requires International oversight politics guy I knew it I had him pegged from the very start okay but what are you doing here in this apartment well I'm renovating it it is an interesting project the building used to be a 12 story skyscraper before the Cannons took the top four stories off this of course happened when the Coalition forces landed here you could say I'm undoing some of the material damage the International Community caused when we arrived here um what is this International Community interal is what rans colloquially call the Coalition in other words the Nations that stopped the disaster of the Revolution what do I call the your employer technically speaking oh okay the governing authority of Ras the RCM is but one part of this provisional Administration so you're a bureaucrat you're a politics guy as I said before I am a commissioner from Sur working for the Institute of price stability this is one of the main projects of the moral inter what is the stability it is the most important thing that clears everything it's the central goal of any sound monetary policy maintaining Z price stability is essential to maintaining high levels of economic activity which is essential for maintaining high levels of employment wow what a riveting complex political discussion he's not telling me [ __ ] anything which is essential for maintaining the social stability basically it makes sure the price of bread doesn't change thank you thank you Kim too much inflation bread becomes too expensive too much deflation it becomes too cheap for Bakers to produce that's why the Institute of price stability Works to keep inflation just below 2% 2% of what but not too far below no too below is also so bad below not close look it's giving me the perfect you're not answering my questions at all the Coalition believes in the importance of informing the public about the benefits of the price stability transparency is one of our principles would you like an informational you [ __ ] you [ __ ] guys I saw you in the comments of the last video and you were like oh I can't wait until Brady meets the Sunday friend you're you're [ __ ] trolling me you knew that guy is like the [ __ ] living embodiment of the subject that I have like almost zero interest in exploring in this game so far like even if I wanted to engage with the politics it's impenetrable from this guy's perspective I'm I don't want to [ __ ] leave than monetary policy is essential for addressing uncertainty stability is the Reon of the moral it's the reason why I identify as a moralist yes stability the the status quo but oh I don't have my leaflets on me today oh he doesn't have the leaflets you can always call our information line making information available is part of the moral intern's commitment to transparency this reminds me so [ __ ] much of being at like the Chamber of Commerce when I was starting my practice in the Netherlands or um you know talking to just like the like any sort of government official about my Visa and and it was just like I I'm just trying to ask you a simple question here like when do I need oh it's on this website I go to the website and it's like not there like I just I [ __ ] bureaucracy it just like drives me up the wall this is just for you okay I I want I don't actually want to know more but I'm going to I'm going to explore the subject a little bit it's the International Organization for moralists oh hence moralist International oh okay The Institute of price stability is just one of its many mind babies as is the Coalition so we're actually working for the moral end term there are more nefarious powers to work for than the moral intern are you a moralist but of course am I a moralist do you value Freedom do you believe in a normal stable World governed by Democratic Values I feel like you're uh I feel like you're really uh uh giving me a narrow scope that would make me sound like a [ __ ] idiot if I didn't agree but what is this normal stable world the oent is part of the normal World Martinez doesn't seem very normal or stable to Martinez no Martinez is something else what about the rest of rol is it part of the normal World rol is generally difficult it's it's led by an interim government which means it hasn't yet achieved full democracy but they are working towards it you're all doing very well here relatively speaking this one's made a pick it's like every time I'm talking to people I'm choosing option D none of the above is that moralism that's like literally the thought in my brain right now because I don't [ __ ] understand a a shred of what he's talking about like I get it it's status quo it's democratically elected but I don't actually know what they believe how could I how could I stake my [ __ ] beliefs on this I it doesn't sound too boring I I I couldn't possibly make that claim this sounds really narrow as well and this just sounds stupid I I I cannot possibly think of why I would choose any of these sorry option D none of the above is this option D usually the most reasonable just got an achievement what the [ __ ] did that say the world's most laughable Centrist defend the political Center seven times I am not even a Centrist in real life I I don't believe in Centrist values I just I don't feel like I'm getting the information to like agree with what are fictional political ideologies that are are fimile of real political ideologies part of that is self-inflicted because I have chosen not to engage with them for the most part is this option do usually the most reasonable answer yes everything else is super extreme it's like I'm living with a bunch of lunatics yes it's usually the most boring one I feel like it's this but when I okay I again I will clarify this when I when I think of like people who are centrists in real life like the enlightened centrists I think those people are also you know deciding not to take a stand because they think it's stupid to take a stand on you know the the other political parties but that's not how I feel like I I vote one way in every single election because I believe more in those values I'm I'm not a I'm not I'm not a politically unaligned individual there is a political ideology that like I I'm interested in the political ideology that supports uh better social welfare systems for people so that the individuals I help in therapy have access to the care I provide right I think that access to care is essential for people's well-being right I've done none of you get to say anymore that I like have not engaged with politics I I feel like I've engaged with it so much at this point like I did a whole video on Kuno about how the [ __ ] environment is shaped by political systems and a person's ecology is impacted by these like um a different Interlocking Systems but I don't know enough about these fake political ideologies to like really stick to them in this world they seem extreme in real life less so only one of them seems extreme and I am very opposed to it [ __ ] it sounds indeed my friend I [ __ ] hate this moralism is all about compromise and achieving the achievable it's pragmatic realistic and level-headed an ideology for doers are you a doer my friend I feel manipulated it now enough of this delightful political interview it's not a delightful [ __ ] sucks enough business let's talk about something I [ __ ] whatever you wish officer tell me about your friend ah my friend my friend is a good young man his family immigrated here from kedra and life has not been easy for him but he understands the importance of Education he has taken his future into his own hands and that's all that matters what is kedra kedra is a candidate member of apis but between you and me their potential membership is a more contentious issue that it's never going to happen they enter negotiations in 21 and it's been pending ever since I want to talk about psychology that doesn't tell me anything about about kedra itself is it warm there cold something in between warm it's also known for its mandering trees and dust storms from Supra it's like the game is aware that it's that this character is inherently frustrating to me as a character role playing this as a person role playing this character kidra is an Emerging Market but it still has a long way to go maybe that's why my friends Minaj decided to immigrate I I don't feel like I've learned anything from this person yet so far how did you become friends how did any of us become friends oh [ __ ] off like actually [ __ ] off oil platforms Ablaze in the night Civil Wars lasting for years finally the International Community is forced to step in what are you talking about it's how millions of people end up where they are meeting the people they meet he's talking about this on such a macro level too I get it you're and on a macro level yes like the interlocking of political systems and wars and InterContinental um travel is how anyone meets but that's not a valuable piece of information for me to understand how you the Sunday friend meant the smoker on the balcony that's just how generally people meet useless information you still haven't told me who he is who I I can I use this crowbar the smoker but I told you officer he's a bright young man here to pursue his education education is the foundation of our future especially the Arts it is a Cornerstone of our civilization what's his real name officer you have to understand I can't give you his personal information I'm sure you have your own methods and databases right please please don't put me in this situation so all you can tell me is that he's here to study the Arts he's deeply in mesed in the study of the Fine Arts yes which Arts he's a truly free spirit he likes all the Arts perhaps graphic design print making who knows the world is open wide for a talented youth like him carrying what looked like a body and then I saw all the surrounding Windows go dead one by one that's when I understood I should not be seeing this so you didn't see [ __ ] you saw them carrying a body sounds like the victim was unconscious or at least incapacitated interesting can you describe them I couldn't see their faces well and there were quite a few of them but they were very loud and very Martinez let's just say that the laboring classes can get rather expressive with their profanities how many of them were there I couldn't tell you exactly less than 10 maybe eight so the only specific information you have for me is something we already know the lieutenant sends you a sharp Look At The Mention Of that number were there any were any of them huge that's a giant you're describing no they were all quite human as far as I could tell did any of them look like drummers I don't remember the context drumers why no but then I don't know what a drummer is supposed to look like I think we can drop the drummer angle that was my bad okay I went back inside yes back inside keep yourself safe from The Killing were you able to see anything from inside officer the yard was Pitch Black there was nothing to see but I could still hear their voices they were threatening to kill that poor man I presume but again I couldn't see very clearly H but we are fairly certain the lady dri was present are you sure one of them wasn't woman it's possible officer but I cannot say with certainty it was very dark you must remember what I believe they were mostly white though I believe I saw two aop pites among them and I am quite certain that one spoke with a MK accent what what happened well that's the strangest part officer nothing happened do you mean quiet for a public lynching eventually their shouts died down and that was all there were no gunshots no celebrator shouts no anything why didn't you call the RCM you're right of course that is what one is supposed to do in such circumstances I was simply in shock I'm afraid I don't have anything else to add really about what time was all this happening approximately yeah get get him Kim establish the timeline all I can say is that it was late oh for [ __ ] sake you didn't check your watch my watch yes now I remember it was 30 minutes past midnight give so let me get this stay you didn't actually witnessed the hanging itself did you no I didn't see the corpse until the following day well that was a waste of time I'm sorry I couldn't be of more assistance are you serious that's it a moment officer do you have everything you need from me I'm afraid we won't have the chance to speak again once you leave good I I would never want to speak to you again what a waste of my time why not it's against diplomatic best practices for an official in my position to be discussing murders with local militia men and I'm pressed for time after you leave I should be leaving as well okay my work here is done knew he would [ __ ] me up like what a waste of time genuinely I spent all that time to learn nothing and to just have the game insult me oh my God that's hilarious and and and I think like from a role playing point of view Harry would be even more frustrated by this like if I if he was already Centrist align simply because not because he's he's convinced by the ideas of centrism or moralism he just finds the other ideologies to be very half-baked in presentation and too extreme then I think he would be only even more turned off from politics by encountering this person who's like oh this is someone whose job it is to be a politician right what I talked about before the projection angle like Harry's Harry's impression about himself are taking shape because of what he sees from other people so he looks at Kim and says oh this is what a cop should probably be right he looks at someone like Gart and is like oh this is like what a a you know a person who sticks by their convictions and workplace should be he's not very flexible right um he he looks at Joyce and is like this is what someone uh who you know leads uh a wing of her company like this is someone very a professional but who still has her own morals and opinions art Clare this is someone who is you know abusing their power or vying for it like he's looking at he's taking in all this information and he's like wow like how much of that does is represented by me right when we see Evart Clair it reflects on our sense of authority when we interact with someone like Kuno it's reflecting on like our electrochemistry because of the drugs angle but Al our Val like our um our our ideas about morals um and now we interact with this person who is like the political [ __ ] archetype of this world so far and my impression is that it was a waste of time nothing was learned there was no personal value to the conversation he didn't change his opinion I didn't change my opinion the world didn't change because of that discussion and I am no more prepared to talk to the next person with a political persuasion about what my belief system is wow it's almost like that's just [ __ ] politics in a nutshell I'm sorry I'm not sorry actually this is just what I [ __ ] experience like to many people the political angle of this game is like its main draw but it's just not for me um you know I really think about it like if someone says to me like yes everything is political to me that's like a way of derailing what I am telling you my focus is right because I could be talking about like oh well the the way these people live in this environment is very interesting from a psychological perspective uh seeing their their environment not being maintained and having drugs in the environment and um the the general mental health of people seems to be in quite a depressive State and someone wants to come and say like yeah but forget all that what you're really talking about is politics I'm like yes okay like that's a that's a lens that you could look at this from but that's not the lens I'm talking about I'm talking about the psychologic right it's the same as someone coming to me and being like okay Brady I want to talk to you about politics let's talk about how uh this class of people is affected by the economic system and I go hold on hold on stop all that okay I'm not what what you're really talking about is psychology you'd be like no I'm trying to talk about politics please don't hijack uh the discussion with what you're interested in like let's let's stay with the topic that I'm talking about and I'd say no no no no no you can't because CU actually everything is psychological even if you don't want it to be it is too bad we're talking psychology like I just would seem really uh pushy and weird I think if I were to act like that that's just how I feel I'm sorry but I'm also not [Music] okay let's uh continue here and I think that it's time for us to go to bed thank you for
