Remember watching this game on the White Sox feed and Hawk was so defeated and silent after Seager’s game-tying grand slam in the 14th.

i just started to comprehend something while writing this script there's a lot of games played through the course of an mlb season what made me realize this well the game we are about to relive lasted a total of 5 hours and 42 minutes or a total of 342 minutes naturally i wanted to find out if this was the longest game of the 2013 season it would have made for a good title but unfortunately there were five games longer than this one a couple of them were significantly longer look at this box score this game actually happened three days after the game we're looking at today a six plus hour 20 inning game that produced only three runs if any of the stargraving sports guys are watching this do you remember this game alright let's backtrack a little bit and take a look at the game that occurred just three days earlier the teams in the game were the chicago white sox and the seattle mariners heading into this game the white sox were on an eight-game losing streak including two losses against the mariners earlier in the series both teams had similar records and places in their respective divisions it's safe to say that neither team was likely to make the playoffs so who were the starting pitchers well the white sox starter was dylan axelrod who was performing well to start the season with his most recent outing being a seven inning performance where he allowed only two runs on the mariner side was the co-ace of the team hisashi iwakuma in just his second season in mlb iwakuma had established himself as a very effective pitcher to lead the mariner's rotation along with felix hernandez iwakuma would finish the year with an all-star appearance and a third place spot in al saiyan voting moving on to the starting lineups the mariners were the clear superior team as only one white sox player owned an ops above 800 while the mariners had three so not only do the mariners have the superior starting lineup and starting pitcher the white sox had lost their last eight games including the first two games of this series this should be an easy series sweep for the mariners how could they mess this up alright let's head to the first inning alejandro de aza works a full count and hits a single right up the middle nice job but you would end up being thrown out on a stolen base attempt yeah let's just go to the next half inning because this is a long game after an endy chavez ground out jason bay hit a single and kyle seeger would follow his lead nice start right well no because kendrick's morales would ground into a double play in the top of the second paul canerko would hit a single but they too would ground into a double play not an exciting start to the game in the bottom of the second nick franklin would run havoc on the base paths stealing both second and third with ease but it would lead to nothing top of the third nothing really happens bottom of the third brendan ryan hits a single alright something may happen here next andy chavez hits a routine fly ball for the first out there's still two outs to go wait why is ryan hustling back to first base and he's out uh let's rewind if we look towards the bottom of the screen it looks like ryan was stealing second base and had slid into the base he likely misread the fly ball too though it was a great play by diaza oh and just in case you care jason bae flies out to end the inning top of the fourth iwakuma dominates that's it bottom of the fourth seeger leads off with a double and morales sends him over to third base alright it's time to get some runs after a walk to raul barnes nick franklin steps up to the plate keep in mind he has the largest ops across both starting lineups he hits a line drive that should be deep enough but then again seeger is not the fastest guy in the world and he's out man the mariners sure do enjoy the outfielder assisted double play of course the crowd didn't like this especially this fan well if that doesn't change the umpire's mind i don't know what will top of the fifth inning iwakuma dominates some more bottom of the inning the first mariner's batter reaches base for the third straight inning third time's the charm well brendon ryan got lucky with this deflected infield single so maybe the luck is finally on the mariner side well there's the fourth double play of the game for the mariners you know i would have expected some scoring to happen by now knowing this is a near six hour game okay well what happens in the sixth inning well iwakuma dominates again then after the first mariner reaches base for the fourth straight inning and a single put runners at the corners hector santiago takes over yes that hector santiago he gets the white sox out of the jam top of the seventh iwakuma dominates bottom of the seventh the first mariner reaches base for the fifth straight inning we know where this is going six double plays in seven innings five of them by the mariners and four of those double plays ended their innings like what is this game top of the 8th iwakuma dominates again right well yes but something unique actually happened no the white sox didn't get a hit but kendrice morales made this catch now i've watched plenty of baseball compilations but this is the first time i've ever seen this catch it's amazing right well i'll tell you what's not amazing the mariners not scoring in the bottom half of the inning by the top of the 9th iwakuma had thrown 99 pitches so he was done for the day with a stat line like this you would expect a number added into the win column well not for iwakuma because the mariner's offense just wasn't getting it done this is what we in the baseball world call pulling a degrom i'm sure mets fans haven't been phased at all by this video this has been their life for the past eight years so in the top of the ninth the mariners are turning the ball over to their second pitcher of the day uervis medina there were a few hiccups but he was able to keep the game scoreless bottom of the ninth the first mariner nick franklin hits a double to the outfield oh we've seen this before i guess we're going to extra innings medina stays in the game and gives up a single with an error by andy chavez in right field surprisingly this is the first error by either team after the walk to adam dunn the white sox have multiple base runners for the first time in the entire game the entire game do the white sox capitalize on this of course not what game do you think this is dodgers padres no this is the white sox versus the mariners you know what you're expecting i'm sorry i'm kind of going a bit crazy maybe the mariners can keep me sane in the bottom half of the inning no of course not all right let's just watch carter capps pitch with his hop step delivery oh wait he doesn't even do it yet okay well the white sox get multiple runners on base for the second time in the game can one of them score nope bottom of the 11th now the mariners can't get on base alright well at least alex rios starts the 12th with a single adam dunn lines out but that's okay there's still two outs to go okay paul kornerko hits a routine fly ball to center field wait a minute there's still two outs to go wait why is ryan hustling back to first base and he's out oh no [Applause] okay don't worry guys rio's made it back in time okay why is the pitcher throwing to second base and he's out uh what well if we rewind rios is clearly attempting to steal second base although he doesn't slide unlike the other player earlier in the game what i'm expecting happened is rios ran past second base and didn't re-tag the base on the way back to first that's the only explanation i can think of so bottom of the 12th anything new of course not top of the 13th gordon beckham hit a two-out double but it led to nothing bottom of the 13th anything new well yes actually kendrick's morales hit a single wait never mind inning ending double play top of the 14th alejandro de aza walks and alexey ramirez hits a single is this finally the moment we've been waiting for surprisingly yes alex rios hits a single and drives in the first run of the game over four hours into the game but it didn't stop there danny farquhar is taken out after a walk to adam dunn hector noesi would take over paul canerco hit a ground ball to third base and they would get the force out at home but this would just be false hope another ground ball is hit but a bad throw would allow the runner to score then jeff keppinger and hector jimenez both drive in runs the score is five to zero after alejandro de aza strikes out to end the half inning white sox closer addison reed comes in after a nick franklin flyout michael saunders hit a single alright we've seen this play out already just get the double play to end the game okay kelly shotpick extends the game with a single of his own but the double play is still on now brendan ryan hits a single okay but the white sox still have a five run lead well andy chavez put the mariners on the scoreboard and the tying run is at the plate okay there it is jason bay strikes out alright reid just end the game we all got stuff to do wait why is the music getting louder [Music] you gotta be kidding me the mariners are down to their final strike and kyle seeger hits that he hit his first career grand slam he hit the first ever extra inning game tying grand slam in mlb history yep that's what he did this was also the first time a team had scored five or more runs in the 14th or later to tie a game also this was the first game ever where both teams scored five or more runs in a game after the first nine innings were scoreless i say all this stuff and the game isn't even over top of the 15th noessie is still pitching after a single and two walks the bases are loaded with one out an identical situation to last inning but with a much different outcome bottom of the 15th reed is still pitching apart from a walk nothing top of the 16th noessie is still pitching he gives up a single to gordon beckham and he steals second base then alejandro de aza hits the ball to center field and drives in beckham and after a ground out sends de-aza to third base alex rios the man who drove in the first run of the game drives in the final run of the game yep after this half-inning the mariners face addison reed once again each batter would strike out swinging the game is finally over oh and if you were wondering yes nowessie and reed both pitched the final three innings pitch count wise this was the longest outing of the year for read and the second longest for noesy i guess you run out of relievers when you play 16 innings though i wonder if the mariners ran out of hitters too because they didn't use a single pinch hitter in this entire game why who knows it wasn't mentioned in the post-game article gordon beckham and addison reed mentioned how crazy the game was and how they were too exhausted to celebrate the end of their 8 game losing streak the game went so long that white sox manager robin ventura had to leave the game early well for good reason at least he needed to catch a plane so he could go see his daughter's high school graduation so what have we learned today well i've learned that if a game has too many double plays nine to be exact i will start to go crazy but as for the game itself it was certainly a memorable one it's a shame that iwakuma pulled a degrom but that's just baseball sometimes as for the teams neither one would make the playoffs but i'm sure these teams can take solace in the fact that they played in one of the longest games of 2013 while making history in the process not a bad way to spend your afternoon alright i hope you guys enjoyed the video leave a like if you did and
