The Blockbuster MLB Trade That Was Leaked by Reddit

sports media has drastically changed since the turn of the century back then you would have to watch espn or read the newspaper to keep up to date on the news about your favorite teams and leagues of course there was the internet but it wasn't exactly at the same level as it is today now there's a plethora of different outlets from twitter to instagram to bleacher report if you frequent reddit you may receive your news from a specific subreddit but it's usually a link to a tweet from woj or rappaport or passing although recently there was a trade in the nfl that was leaked by a reddit user because he overheard a phone conversation while playing warzone but what if i were to tell you that there was a big trade just a few years ago that was leaked and reported by two redditors who were these two redditors you'll find out the incredible names of these two redditors later real quickly i just want to shout out this reddit user from the nfl thread which led me to check out this story alright let's head back to the 2016 2017 off-season the chicago cubs had just won their first world series title since 1908 but in order to defend that title they would have to make some upgrades the first significant upgrade they made was trading outfielder jorge soler for royals all-star reliever wade davis they also added reliever koji yuehara and outfielder john jay apart from these guys the cubs mainly stuck with who they had the cubs did end april sitting first in the nl central but by the end of may they were under 500 ending the month on a six-game losing streak including a sweep to the padres all i'm saying is if you're being swept by the 2017 padres your team is in a bad state by the all-star break the cubs were back under 500. it wasn't like any specific player was vastly underperforming but the team was not looking like a championship caliber team there needed to be an upgrade somewhere moving to the south side of chicago the white sox were clearly out of the playoff race and weren't expected to be playoff contenders anyway they were clearly rebuilding for the future sitting towards the top of many pre-season farm system rankings this farm system featured some notable players like johann manchada lucas giolito michael kopeck reynaldo lopez and carson fulmer as the white sox traded star pitcher chris sale in the previous offseason they clearly weren't afraid to part with their biggest names for future success as for the cubs they traded a promising prospect of their own in a deal at the trade deadline in 2016. that deal featured cub's top prospect gleber torres among others in exchange for oroldis chapman so the cubs were certainly willing to deal their best prospects the question is who would be the player the cubs sought from their crosstown rivals that player would be jose quintana after the 2014 season quintana signed a team-friendly five-year extension that would last through the 2020 season in 2016 at the age of 27 quintana made his first all-star game by the all-star break of 2017 quintana wasn't having a 2016 esque season but he was a 27 year old left-handed pitcher with 4 years left of team control that's going to attract a lot of interest and well by the all-star break many teams had been linked to a trade for quintana teams such as the twins astros pirates cardinals and braves among a few others but there was a team that no one had talked about until reddit user katy perry's booty hole yes you heard that right made this post on the white sox subreddit on july 12th at 7 21 pm hey guys take this with a grain of salt but i heard from a friend whose brother's friend works for the cubs that q is going to the cubs in exchange for four players has anyone heard anything similar obviously there was some skepticism not only because this is just some random reddit user reporting hearsay but this would be a trade with the cubs crosstown rivals who just won a world series title why would the white sox make a deal with the cubs of all teams but then another user mentioned that top prospects for the cubs eloy jimenez and dylan cease were pulled from their game as you'd expect to happen when a player prepares to be traded and then another user named i kid you not wet wetbutt23 said this four prospects no pros players were meeting with doctors and will be official tonight or tomorrow to which the original poster replied this is my source by the way i'm going to shorten both of these users names they'll be known as kp and wb so after wb made their comment they were met with some questions eloy jimenez was sitting on the bench tonight during his team's game do you mean after the game he met with a doctor i was just told that the trade was agreed to this morning and the players were doing physicals and whatnot could have been before the game i am not 100 on the timeline of the physicals told by who i was told what i was told and took it for what it was worth can you give us anything for credibility or is this a just believe kind of thing there is no need for credibility on the internet i don't even know what i can even provide someone told me something i took it for what it was worth in that case i have no other choice but to believe wet butt is theo epstein theo epstein by day wet butt 23 by night there were a couple more comments showing skepticism with one person saying that they believed this was a bluff to get louis brinson out of the brewers well 12 hours later at 8 23 am on july 13th the white sox official twitter account tweeted that the team had traded jose quintana to the cubs for a prospect package including eloy jimenez and dylan cease which is pretty funny since you don't expect a team's own twitter account to be the first ones to report their own trade usually it's a journalist not only was a trait of this magnitude kept under wraps to the point where mainstream media had no idea of its development two random reddit users with these names broke the story 12 hours before the white sox's own twitter account announced the trade funny enough about 25 minutes before this trade was announced on twitter baseball america tweeted out their new mid-season issue yep the next day even cubs president theo epstein had gotten wind of the reddit story mentioning wet butt's name after the trade quintana did well with the cubs but they would lose in the nlcs to the dodgers and the white sox missed the playoffs entirely as expected but we don't care about that what happened to kp and wb well they were both hailed as legends of the white sox subreddit and were given their own custom flares but apart from that they haven't broken any trades since then again the cubs and white sox haven't made any trades with each other since the quintana deal apart from a follow-up post kp has been relatively silent on the subreddit apart from commenting every now and again as for wb no activity since the quintana deal just silence wb i need to know what happened to you maybe wb is actually theo epstein or they've gone on to espn given their accurate inside sources the world may never know before we end the video just one more quick funny story about a week after quintana was traded to the cubs it was reported by tony andraki of nbc sports chicago that quintana took lsd into work and wasn't sure where wrigley field's player entrance was lsd you say quintana took lsd to wrigley field yep he took lakeshore drive to wrigley field by the way this is his pinned tweet on his profile i've only been to chicago once so if you're from chicago did you initially understand what andraki meant by the way lumanati's is better than giordano's fight me so the moral of the story is knowing the right people can get you far in life you could either land a high-paying job as a result
