hi everyone welcome back to learn English with Dana I'm Dana your Canadian English teacher and in today's video I'm going to teach you the things that you should never say to a Canadian or in Canada so this video is intended for those who are going to Canada for work or study or just for vacation and if you are a Canadian watching this video and you have any tips for those coming to Canada then please comment below so let's get started [Music] number one Canada it's just like America right first off this has nothing to do with Canadians dislike of Americans we like Americans a lot of us have American friends or American family but since 1867 Canadians have been trying to distinguish ourselves from our southern neighbors yes our accent is similar and our cities look like any typical North American city but socially historically and politically Canadians are proud of our country and its differences number two Canadians say aboot right it's best not to comment on our accent almost every native English speaker can hear that there's something funny about the way the Canadians pronounce words with oh you including about well in some Canadians this strange vowel combination is more pronounced than in others I've yet to cross a Canadian that actually says a bhoot and in truth were a little bit in denial about our accent a lot of us grow up watching American television and listening to American music so we're completely oblivious to the fact that we do say words a little bit different number three did you vote for Justin Trudeau politics can be a conversational taboo in Canada unlike the US politics in Canada is seen more as a private matter most of us don't openly are publicly identify with a specific party so asking us who we voted for it can make us feel uncomfortable number four respect and keep it PC as in politically correct Canada is a very socially progressive country and freedom of speech is not an absolute right in Canada section one of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms allows the government to reasonably limit it and unlike in the u.s. in Canada you can be jailed for the promotion of hate speech that targets a group number five so you can speak French right only 70% of Canadians identify as bilingual and the majority of these people live in the provinces of Quebec New Brunswick and Ontario in an area called the bilingual belt this is where there is frequent interaction between francophone Canadians and Anglophone Canadians the French language can be a source of frustration for many Anglo speaking Canadians as we spend many years learning a language that we cannot speak bonjour je m'appelle Dana come on to bat there was the limits to my French language ability number six get out of my way this stereotype that Canadians are extremely or even excessively polite did not come from nowhere Canadians are very polite people Canadians tend to hold doors for those behind them and if someone bumps into them we actually will apologize to that person so don't forget your please and thank yous and throw in a story every once in a while and you will definitely fit in and number seven is a tip in nonverbal communication and this is don't invade our personal space Canadians are very protective of our personal space and have a quite a large what we call personal bubble this is usually about an arm's length for most Canadians we are especially protective of our personal bubble when we're speaking with strangers or people we don't know and when you're meeting a new Canadian a handshake is perfectly fine okay guys so that's it this was my list of things that you should never say to a Canadian if you like this video please give it a thumbs up and I post new English lessons every week on my channel so if you're new consider subscribing until next time bye bye [Music] you [Music]
