They Told Me Not to Come Here

grizzly bears snowstorms accidents severe weather mosquitoes unavailable services okay the gas station is closed danger lurking around every corner this always gives me so much stress yay second breakdown of the trip when I first published my plans to drive to Alaska this late in the season the people of the internet basically told me that I was risking my life and I should wait until next year in order to avoid certain death of course I didn't listen and went ahead with my plans anyway so what's it really like to drive to Alaska in September is it as bad as they say let's pick up where we left off last week in Dawson City the last town in Canada before the Alaska border step number one in order to get out of Dawson City and go towards Alaska you must get on a ferry across the Yukon river so that is exactly what we're about to do really cutting it very close we've decided to take the top of the world Highway which is meant to be spectacular but the border crossing to Alaska that is on that Highway closes today in six and a half hours so we don't have that much time to get there and then it just closes for the season so if we don't get there we'll have to make a massive three-day detour which is not something that we want hey good boy you ready first challenge let's see if we all fit on the ferry because there's six cars which looks like a little bit above the limit let's see if they let me on I'm the last one okay looks like I'll fit [Music] what's going on [Music] and now it's just the highway all the way to Alaska and then all the way until today with a name like the top of the world highway I definitely had high hopes for this road I guess that day people's warnings about the weather seemed to hold up I was just hoping that at some point even this late in the season we would still get lucky and see some sun I mean it definitely doesn't look like the beginning of September out here this looks like deep deep autumn it's very cold the wind is just freezing freezing cold there's barely any cars here no wonder they're closing up for the season oh so here's the thing we were out here not because someone made us do it we were out here because we wanted to be because one day we woke up and decided to go on an adventure I suppose I could be anywhere in the world right now in places with much better weather but I'm here yeah parents are surprisingly good at messing up right and I want to be here and that choice to be here that gave the three of us a pretty special bond it's so foggy out here you can barely see anything so we're currently driving like over the tops of mountains and it's just Mist everywhere it's kind of creepy you would not want to get stuck here not in this weather and so many potholes this road is not very well maintained I guess probably because there's not that many people that drive it and if they do they're like us we were fast approaching the border with Alaska this is the northern border crossing which as opposed to the southern one is small and only open in the summer in fact it's only open for another four hours before closing down for the next nine months okay just approaching the Border let's see how this goes I'm worried of course he's always gives me so much stress but let's see how it goes okay that literally took one minute the Border officer barely even looked at my passport she just looked at it looked at a couple of stamps and was like okay are you gonna be here beyond x amount of time I'm like nope and she's like okay you can go she didn't even check the documents well that was easy very different experience to what I had to go through in Texas a few months back well not much of a view but this is proof that we made it into Alaska okay we have a problem she won't start she won't start I wonder what's wrong battery oh oh thank God but I think the battery is playing tricks on me hope this doesn't become an issue all right [Music] welcome to the town of chicken and guess what there is a sculpture of a chicken oh oh is it closed oh no is the gas station closed oh no that sucks it says do not enter services available on Airport Road but I guess that's where we're going then I wanted to show you the sculpture of the chicken it's there all right now can you see it September in Alaska as beautiful as it is does mean that a lot of places are shut a lot of services are unavailable and I guess the town of chicken is our introduction to that potential logistical catastrophe hopefully not all right let's go to the airport and see if we can get gas there well I guess it's really no surprise that in the town of Chicken Alaska pretty much everything is chicken themed that makes sense okay I want to show you real quick inside this local bar here in chicken oh my God this place is a total hoot you could have a total party in here this is awesome I'm in love I want to say I wouldn't want to run low on fuel out here especially with the services winding down for the season just a little bit muddy just a little bit Dusty it's only going to get worse from here so I'm filling up everywhere I can [Music] and we have just arrived at our first Campsite in Alaska [Music] [Music] thank you oh what is the pizza whenever I remembered to list the things that I was grateful for on this trip France was high up there first night in Alaska thank you so much oh my God so good social media may have brought us together but I have a feeling that this friendship will Outlast Instagram for sure woke up to this View today apparently it snowed up in the mountains last night and you just kind of wake up to a completely different view a completely different sense of Alaska like right now clearly winter is upon us and you can really see it it's gorgeous it feels a little bit scary though [Music] [Music] ever since I started traveling full-time I've had to reduce my toiletry bag to pretty much like a bare minimum so today I want to show you what toiletries I carry with me on this Expedition yeah spoiler alert is really not much so here we go soap and sponge in one this is actually just a soap in a little little bag which works as a scrub and a sponge it's pretty neat I made it up myself I'm very proud this is a bar shampoo also all natural and it's lovely and the box is like 10 years old next up conditioner yes I've got hair conditioner this is for my cousin she gave it to me natural toothpaste toothbrush this is some cold pressed flour oil for my face and my hair I use this instead of cream all natural deodorant all natural uh mouthwash all natural floss all natural face scrub lip balm all natural natural scent that contains zero perfume Pepper and a vanilla it's really nice the greatest luxury of all a face mask which I have used exactly once in the last two months sunscreen all natural and a hairbrush and I have one secret beauty product with me dry shampoo in case I can't wash my hair for like more than a week after all those warnings about Grizzlies I was honestly half expecting to have Bears sneak up on our camp every single night ready to devour not just our food but us as well so naturally even out here on our little walk I definitely felt a little bit anxious about wild animals it's kind of hard to relax out here you know oh nice matild made us a bridge she's a hero Nick is still not braving this spot I'm definitely gonna fold it three two one [Music] okay we're ready to go milk has had an amazing very active morning and I think he is ready to take a little nap or a big nap big nap meanwhile we are off to Fairbanks today which is quite exciting uh we need to stock up on supplies uh vegetables fruits doggy food Fairbanks Airport Fairbanks airport that's our destination yeah I think so three hours and 45 minutes yeah that's quite far but we'll make it yeah we got crazy landies we're ready for this this is Arctic over Landis Roger that either way yep so guys it's pretty expensive up here in Alaska but a local contact that we're staying with tonight um has given us the coordinates of a gas station that has cheap pizza oh no off-roading on a cold engine very risky well Nick just really couldn't help himself oh my God actually I'm able to go out nobody can do it we're good okay go back go back go back inside [Music] [Music] when we finally arrived in Fairbanks my top priority was to fill up my spare Jerry can it couldn't hurt to have a few gallons of diesel extra for the long road up north just in case but we had a problem the padlock is so Rusty that I can't get it to open so I have to find my W2 okay that did not work it is Rusted shut so we're gonna have to head to town and probably get someone to just cut through it with a metal saw I think that's the only solution because they really need that Jerry can for what's coming up ahead the road to Crudo Bay all the way up north in Alaska there's like one gas station on the way and I don't think my fuel tank okay that's not long so this is a really really important but that wasn't the end of my worries we have ourselves a little problem Odyssey is not starting I turned the key in the ignition it happens it's like it's like the battery is dead don't do this to me okay I've just messaged Matilda Nick to uh come and help out there they are let's see if they can help me figure this out but I think odyssey's gonna have to go to mechanics because this is not turning on yay second breakdown of the trip nice the second in a week so I guess we leave you here we go to Pluto it's just not doing anything like so what happens when you turn it nothing nothing yeah so the only two things is uh either the starter is like stuck or uh uh the battery's dead so actually the third option is the solenoid is damaged let's start with the booster let's check if it's the battery first all right cool yeah when you turn on yeah right is the fridge like turning and everything functioning right now this stuff as well yeah it tells you the voltage of the battery there uh yeah oh yeah so your battery is fine so it's it's down here then yeah well I guess if there's a good place to break down it's probably Fair Banks hey Vic did you expect this to happen yeah you look a bit worried probably because uh I'm outside of the car and not inside the car as he likes so that's the part that I'm looking for which is the starter but I think I saw it on the other side breakdown number two in the space of approximately eight days it's going well [Music] the connections between where the starter is and this part here which is the I guess the negative connection it's uh it was moving and unplugged so now we're cleaning it out and it's gonna it should work [Music] [Music] this is the thing about serendipity so Nick and matild had a mechanical issue a couple of weeks back in Canada with their Defender where they had to push it to get it started and we kind of decided that we would travel together kind of a little bit last minute so we met up and we drove here together and how amazingly lucky that they had the exact same issue so they know what it is they know how to fix it and we are together so they could actually help me with it and we're not great mechanics we just know because we had the same problem and one thing that I was told is uh finding out this trip we will be Land Rover mechanics yeah you getting there that night we got invited by a local to park our rigs in his driveway near Fairbanks after a long day we jump on the opportunity thanks again Tommy for your invitation so here we are at Tommy's Blaze close to fairbags and Tommy happens to have a metal saw which is just so convenient that's exactly what we need and also Thomas great attitude um an enthusiasm for the song so this is what's happening we are gonna climb on top and we're gonna cut through that padlock and that'll be it hopefully shall we yeah okay wait so okay so how do you do it you would like to do it I guess yes so trigger hold it no don't put your finger there no I'm not pushing the trigger so uh just push the um this block up to the blade here and just do you don't have to push down hard let the blade do all the work okay okay and then it'll cut it off easy peasy yeah yeah okay I've never caught through metal or anything like that so this will be at first thank you wow I feel very Mighty right now dangerous yeah why not okay was taking over the filming because I don't think I can film and cut through a padlock at the same time all right this is gonna be wild cool so yep so this is the padlock push this part up against it as best you can uh like more like this right yeah [Applause] you wanna have a go all right is there blood no we didn't no well oh my God so we can't do it it's not working the padlock is just so tough that the metal saw will not cut through it isn't that wild [Music] oh let's see that ew nice good job done good morning so after Tommy managed to get my padlock off last night we spent a really nice evening on his property near Fairbanks um but this morning it's time to keep going north we only have three days I think to get all the way up north um it's very far so first order of the day I'm gonna fill her up you want to get it you want to grab it an extra 20 liters if you could get me through a good couple hundred kilometers so it's definitely worth doing oh hard work wasn't it okay this guy now goes on top Odyssey starts the fuel tanks are filled water is filled you've got the groceries laundry's done I guess we're ready to go okay you guys we ready yes we are I've set my maps to prudo Bay let's see how far we get today yep let's do that how much did it say a thousand two RK 495 miles 11 hours 15 minutes [Music] you ready to go to sleep I think you are well so far so good despite what everybody said fuel wasn't really an issue the weather looked like it was actually lifting people were super nice and really Keen to help no Grizzly encounters just yet no mosquitoes at all not even a Bigfoot just one new breakdown all right but the true remote Wilderness was still to come in the next episode we take home the infamous Dalton Highway all the way to the Arctic coast of Alaska foreign [Music]
