bad advice the world is full of it just feel it you're going to miss weddings turn that amp down couldn't have been further from the truth be careful that's how you lose money playing the jazz blues don't do it let me talk more paul welcome to paul david's youtube channel my name is adam neely i hope you enjoy your time here i'm here at the namm show in and around los angeles where the entire music industry gathers and nerds out so there will be some weird and cool guitars sprinkled throughout this video and before i ask all my youtube friends the worst advice they were ever given maybe it's time you shared yours too so leave them in the comment section so we can all celebrate some good old bad advice worst musical advice i've ever been given was to just feel it that you don't need to study that you just need to feel that's what the good musicians do you see them up on stage and they're just feeling and that to me is like telling like a good chef oh you just need to go in the kitchen and just just you know or telling a surgeon you just need to feel it all professionals learn all professional study and then when you study a lot and you're really you've done a lot of practice guess what you start to feel it you start to feel it then but just tell a beginner no you can't tell the beginner just go feel it you got to study practice and then feel 30 seconds all right [Music] first advice i ever had was be careful in my opinion you should throw caution to the wind be brave do what your heart tells you to do and continue with that always never be careful really actually maybe sometimes it's important to be a little bit careful [Music] okay this is a hard one it's good advice but equally i think my girlfriend would probably say it's bad advice um it was given to me by nuno bettencourt who is literally like my hero he said you're going to miss weddings you're going to miss funerals you're going to miss birthdays you're going to miss anniversaries you're going to miss job interviews but it's worth it if you get to do what you love and i think my girlfriend probably argued that's the worst advice ever given and i'm somewhere in the middle i think just to keep my relationship intact thank you dude okay guys so check out this pickup it's movable so you can 11 years ago i went to a music store in atlanta and i was looking for a job as a teacher so i asked one of the guys that worked there an older guy who had been there for a long time it's like hey man you know i'm trying to i'm trying to gig i'm trying to play professionally i'm trying to like figure this out i think i want to teach i want to do these things and he told me don't do it you can't do it you can't you can't make a living you can't uh the guitar is dead people don't care about guitar anymore you should try and figure something else out to do because you can't you just can't do it anymore the worst advice i was ever given is that you need a high action to have a great tone it is not true don't make life difficult for yourself if you don't need to you do not need to have a high action you can have a great time with a low action team [Music] and this is actually what the natural edge was when i got this raw piece of lumber um it was a forest fire or a lightning strike or something and so it was so beautiful i love this natural texture so i wanted to leave it in laura's musical advice look this is what you gotta do you get signed to a label you release a cd shoot a music video you hire a promoter a manager a tour agent you rent out a bus and you go on tour and you know none of that worked it's like that's how you lose money you got to do it you get a you get a camera like this you grow you grow this beard like you grow this beard [Music] there was a music teacher one time that told me there are only three types of music classical jazz and pop and if you can play classical then you can play classical jazz and pop and if you can play jazz you can play jazz and you can play pop but if you can only play pop music you can only play pop music so if you want to be a great musician you should learn classical music because then you'll be able to play all music easily and i just felt like that was a little pretentious four years prior that sounded nothing like any of the songs on the charts worst musical advice if you practice long hours you will become good at music i don't believe that you know we're told that over and over again that the more you practice the better you are but i think it's more the more you play with other people the better you are you will become more technically adept at your instrument you will have a lot of fun if you practice it let me talk more paul i think the real music making comes when you're making music with other people for other people that someone told me there's a timeline with your career we all grow we all have different paths we all have different ways of getting where we need to go and we all have a different definition of what success is everyone's on their own timeline so enjoy the journey the worst advice i was given was to be too loyal to your teacher in that sense not changing teachers because i felt this loyalty that i have to really stick with this person and he wasn't a great teacher unfortunately so it took me some time to really shift and get more information and the idea with music is just as much information as we can [Music] i was told by a record label exec in 2012 to put the guitar down and ironically guitar has been the making of my career by me nerding out on my youtube channel from 2016 onwards and i will never put the guitar down oh wait you got 30 minutes i've got 30 minutes hey that was it within 30 seconds i nailed it high five [Music] worst advice turn that amp down you're too loud on stage what you got to say when you get to soundcheck and they say let me hear some guitar it's too loud what you say is let's listen to it with the drums in the bass too before i turn down it can sound very loud and pointy on its own but as soon as the drums come in those cymbals kick in the bass kicks in the guitar disappears so don't turn down i one time had a college professor who told me that the thing we should spend the most time practicing was the jazz blues because according to him that the majority of money we made in our musical careers would be made playing the jazz blues so he said that's all you should practice i did not practice that i practiced a lot of open chords and pentatonic scales and look where that led me don't move to la the city will eat you alive and it couldn't have been further from the truth [Music] probably too much emphasis on the technical when i should have been just spending time on the creative the more we do music i'm sure you feel the same way you realize that a lot of your heroes most of the time didn't even know what they were doing they just had an ear they developed their ear and they started making music and inventing stuff you know where when i was learning from the records and playing along with records i was actually growing faster in my first metal band our drummer decided to that there were no repeats in the songs no repeats part part part part part nobody remembers the songs [Music] oh you have to like memorize these strum patterns or something like that you don't you don't have to memorize strum patterns do whatever you want have fun all in go all in you're never going to follow your dreams unless you quit everything responsible in your life and go all in you can do it on the side you can slowly get better build a following find out what you want to do and eventually what you're good at will find you the worst advice i ever got was nah you're doing fine okay let me explain so i was practicing this chromatic exercise i'm sure we'll play it trying to get as fast and as clean as possible so full of excitement i brought it to my teacher hoping he would say where i could improve i played it and he said you're doing fine and instead he gave me a list of 50 chords from minor to major to at nine to all the crazy jazz scores i was like just killed my spark my enthusiasm to practice entirely for a good few months i guess he was basically saying forget about it you will never learn to play like john tucci anyway my hero at the time so you know what's funny that seeing all these bad and worst advice is that some of these just contradict each other everyone needs to hear something different and what may be a bad advice for someone may just as well be a very good advice for someone else so soak everything up listen to everyone but also take it with a grain of salt because it may not be the thing you're looking for thank you so much for watching and please let me know in the comments the worst advice you've ever gotten and thanks everyone for helping me out with this video i love you all and i hope to see you again soon cheers [Music]
