[Music] get on notre dame's dome is a beacon for football fans and certain rituals must be observed like painting the golden helmets with a Halloween twist this weekend Fisher to bury an Air Force fly in today as the Irish call on the ghosts of their storied past a touch for luck as Notre Dame hosts airports Notre Dame Stadium sold out for the 150-foot time as the Falcons take on the Fighting Irish hello everyone and welcome to Notre Dame Tom Hammond and Pat Haden ready for a match between two teams with identical five and two records Pat one Air Force comes in you think of a potent option attack the ground game but this Air Force team has another dimension well you right they do but you know remember under Fisher to vary they have run the ball well for a long long time actually 15 of his 16 years they've ranked in the top ten this year in the ball again ranked in the top five 277 yards of game but what makes this team different everything just as you're talking sweetly it's really their fourth awesome Mike piecing to the wide receiver Ryan Fleming connected 27 times Fleming's coffee no four touchdowns and face and it's thrown for over a thousand yards already nine touchdown passes and Tom they're actually come ugh plenty more passes for more yards than Notre Dame is and that's the play really that Bob Davies most concerned about today comes in riding a three game winning streak Pat and freshman Matt Lowe Vecchio at quarterback again it'll be his fourth start he looks pretty comfortable there well you know I think the coaches are really pleased with his progress and Dede has been brought up so those starters he didn't bit more than just at it but he's been very efficient in the passing game six touchdowns only one interception that's a key factor productive running the football and they expect a line of the quarterback running the football they wanted the gain at least well maybe 20% of the yards rushing and he's not repeating mistakes that's what you worry about in the fresh but he's not repeating the mistakes you know becoming a big-time college quarterback it's a process it's a journey but he's well on his way to becoming a very good college quarterback all right it's a beautiful afternoon at Notre Dame and the airforce Falcon is getting ready to spread his wings no tricks today nothing but treats says air force meets Notre Dame we'll be back after this message and a word from our NBC stations [Music] welcome back to Notre Dame we're just a couple of moments ago Cody the airforce Falcon put on a show for the fans here in order dame stadium sold-out for the 150 fourth consecutive time you think he flew it on his own pattern e to come on the charter a bad place to be a mountain I would think there's Cody putting on the pregame show as the Air Force flies in from Colorado Springs and the Irish getting set to make their appearance here at Notre Dame Stadium behind their coach Bob Davie massed in the tunnel having passed that famous sign that says play like a champion today leading to the knute rockne dance [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and the falcons of air force with an identical five and to record the last time air force play near at Notre Dame Stadium they beat the Irish upsetting to them 9th ranked Notre Dame team in overtime the first overtime game the Irish ever played an airforce came away in 1996 with an overtime victory over the Irish by a score of 20 to 17 and on the sidelines Jim Gray is with us today right now he's with coach Bob Davie Jim all right thank you very much tom coach you guys don't see the option a whole lot is it concerns you over there and air forces often it's always a concern when you play a wishbone team Jim you know we did play Nebraska early in the season we have played Navy thing that makes Air Force so difficult to defend as they throw the ball very efficiently I think their quarterbacks a good player and I think the wide receivers a good player but we have no excuses I mean we're well prepared we just have to go play of all the Academy of teams usually the Air Force seems to be the most dangerous how do you guard against what happened in 96 and what have you told your team about that well I'm sure Air Force spent a lot of time talking about 96 we really talked about 2000 I think this is a different football team right now I have tremendous respect for Air Force I don't think 96 has a whole lot to do with anything right now thank you all right back upstairs to your time all right there is Debbie's opposite number Fischer to Barry in a 17th season at Air Force and as you see the winningest head coach in service Academy history that takes in rent blank Ben Martin the hall the great moose and Fisher to Barry has topped them all Notre Dame with a 19-5 series lead they are 3 and 9 at Notre Dame Air Force they won three times here of their five victories it at 96 shocker in overtime as bob davie gets his team fired up beautiful day sunny skies 53 degrees here at kickoff time one of the oddities concerning that 96 game is that the man who kicked the field goal of Dallas Thompson is playing for air force today not as the kicker but as the putter Thompson after that 96 season went on a church mission for a couple of years to Venezuela back now to complete his eligibility at Air Force and returning to the spot where he gave airforce one of the biggest wins and that Academy's history I thought it was interesting to bury yesterday talking to his team about that 96 game s they were here for a walkthrough kind of walking his team around different parts of the stadium where they had big moments in 96 just trying to room it have them remember him it is possible versus us to come in here and win and it is if they don't turn the ball over they don't have mistakes in the kicking game and they have a couple of trick plays and made a halfback pass or no or a reverse air force can win this game but they're gonna have to play their best game of the year [Music] we'll kick off Matt McNew has it teed up to kick to Alma's eiga xanga takes it and lets it bounce and disick go out of bounds or it is not bound just at the one-yard line no touch back that's a big mistake by McNew the Notre Dame kicker as the ball goes out of bounds so Notre Dame has the opening kick go out of bounds and airforce starts from its own 35 with Miller Hildebrand Ayotte Joseph and Porsche up front the quarterback Mike season a run or pass threat McKay Brown Becker Fleming third leading receiver in the Mountain West Conference and the tight end is Moline here's Thiessen at quarterback and they open up with three wide receivers so a new look from Air Force right for the start and here is to give to McKay and Notre Dame was ready for the play as McKay tried to get outside Anthony Weaver with the stop it is Weaver Scott Legree and Boylan up front as Notre Dame opens on defense with five defensive backs Harris and Denman Williams Jefferson Walton Israel and driver five DBS to open for the Irish defense second and ten no gain on the first run by Mackay Irish showing blitz here's the option visa near the pitch [Applause] as the pitch went to brown and got a couple of yards with Boylan and Jefferson combining on the stop of Federico Brown the Mike theis has really had a very very productive year we talked about him as a passer over a thousand yards nine touchdowns only thrown three interceptions a lot of big plays in the passing game - Ryan Fleming number five in particular but boy is he is a tough option quarterback you know all off two quarterbacks have to be tough if you see his hands are so beaten up from taking so many shots and Thiessen's first pass is incomplete and he had a man wide open Brown was open in the flat with the pass too wide and Air Force will punch ya there there's a look at Mike Thiessen's hand look at some of these little bruises he's got here and that is why it is often hard for option quarterbacks to have real finesse in the passing game it's unusual to see it you know guy who's getting hit that much have good touch but Mike theis and ducks on fourth down Dallas Thompson the hero of 96 will kick to the ultra dangerous joy gather all the returner for Notre Dame one of the best in the nation David Givens again as the ball bounds with an ode to the Notre Dame sideline they're out of bounds around the 50 yard line see though marketed about the 18 44 yard tugs counting the air force roll so freshman quarterback Matt Moe Becky with some final words as he comes onto the field for the first time black may han fei Gandy and voters up front may head starting for the inter Jim Jones Levin Keogh with Julius Jones Murray gather all Givens and Holloway joan to the tailback spot behind la vecchio actually a two tight end formation now with holloway and O'Leary in there Jones spinning but only to the 20 yard line gain of a couple before the stop is made by mine rod from the strong safety spot Alan Hickson pinned REE are up front for the Falcons there is a look at a beat-up airforce defense of their leading tackler Cory Nelson has his shoulder injury one of their mainstays they hope he can play today but does not start over Street a freshman gets the start and that safety spot I place in second down this time folks we try to use again and let's see lost a popular season until absolutely they were first in Division one in not having lost a fumble all season long only four turnovers on interceptions all year long and he gonna eight hustling defense that I think it was Matt Palmer number 52 made the first stop and then my rod will recover the fumble nut trolley one of the corners Wes Crawley this didn't really come as a result of the hit it looked like Julius Jones just kind of lost traffic as he was going down an awkward tackle he kind of thrust his right arm out where the ball was in memory he hurt his right thumb a couple of weeks ago and that may have caused some of the problem so the first lost fumble of the season by low today and gives Air Force a chance here's the unit only a couple of tough yards Anthony Denman made the stop talked about turnover ratio this was coming into today plus seven that was really one of the big reasons the Irish are five and to really have protected the ball well a year ago they had 30 different turnovers this is their last time they fumbled a ball November of last year the last game of the season against Stanford they lost 40 37 basically at the 45 by Anthony deadly Anthony Damon had a sensational sensational year on defense of the Irish he leads the team in tackles tackles for losses and in sacks as well six sacks of the year for Anthony Denman the guy who also kind of brings a you know an attitude to this team he and Brock Williams were kind of very emotional fiery type of guys really kind of sets the emotional tone for the entire defense another good play by Anthony Denman so air force now facing a 3rd and 19 after the sack [Applause] McKay McKay is the tailback beard the full-back decent intended for McKay well you know that screen was set up for Scotty McKay and it happened last week they had that same play they sprung for screen passes this year two of them have been completed for real big plays last week it was underthrown to McKay similar to that and he would have scored a touchdown and that had big play written all over it so Thompson who's first plant covered 44 yards will punt or gather all as Air Force is unable to take advantage of the doughnut a turnover boot spun it see if they can down a deep and they do it takes a sideways bounce out of bounds at about the 14 yard line where Notre Dame will take over after 29 yard [Music] beautiful fall scenes on the campus of the University of Notre Dame we are in the first quarter Notre Dame and Air Force and it's nothing nothing Air Force unable to take advantage of a Notre Dame fumble their first of the season and after punting the Irish take over at their own 14 yard line maybe with his freshman quarterback metla Vecchio under center I formation with Fisher and Murray here's Levesque a osburgh pass diving attempt made by gather all but it's incomplete it'll be second and ten there are three reasons at least why Notre Dame has been such an improved team this year the play of their freshman quarterback Matt ma Vecchio has been very very solid they've been absolutely superb on special teams much you know much more aggressive on defense this team in really only five terms just saw the first fumble only five turnovers on all year so it's been special teams it's been aggressive defense the offense really has to play a lot better and they've got to get a lot more consistency at the running game too many get you know too many runs with just kind of a one Tony Fisher and Fisher who is the number three rusher for the Irish gets a couple of tough yards before penbury from an offensive in spite Justin makes the tackle for Air Force feel like they can get they a little bit of movement up here and get on the corner of this airforce defense and what they want do a spring Tony Fisher in a little bit of a scene here but again this Air Force defense although somewhat smallish they get off blocks you know those kind of guys you can block once but they don't stay blocked and you'll see guys recover very very quickly fun on this Air Force defense third and six for the Irish this is a blitz down four career force fishers in the slot bottom of the screen giving them four wives Tio's passes complete to Fisher at the 25 just enough for the first down by a yard it appears as Sam mine rod makes the stop for air force with a Tony Fisher last week against West Virginia had a big big game there ran for a touchdown down tough yards down by the goal line but in over his career dotard and he's been a sensational receiver that was his kind of a fingertip catch then bowled over the last two yards here he's wide open you know what I like about 20 pitch he started every game last year has been it doesn't start now but you don't hear any complaints about him when he gets his chance he gets producers Gibbons in motion as well Vicki hands to Fisher Fisher dances his way for a short game tackled by Travis Logsdon of the balcony thanks to kind of play time I'm talking about your game you know really has made some real strides with Matt Levesque you in the last few weeks but they just haven't had consistent seen that running game you know they'll have an 80-yard run they'll have a bunch of two yard runs in one yard Russ Murray's in at fullback Fisher at tailback on the i-formation the lucky L play-action faith pups once now scrambling and it goes away no Vecchio scrambling to avoid the air force rush has to throw it away being chased by Kevin Runyon and it'll bring up 1/4 pound for the Irish excuse me 3rd down 30 long but you know that is we talked about that we talked to Matt Levesque yo yesterday said hey you know I'm learning from my mistakes couple of weeks ago he forced a few balls against Navy that's that's a smart play you know and throw the ball away don't take the sack don't rinse the interception to have a chance to pick up the first down third Nate told us his biggest improvement was when he makes those mistakes not dwelling on them just play the next play shaken up he's in the shotgun very long to him for the first down that's a great pickup block by Tony Fisher strong safety blitz by Sam mine rod the defensive coordinator Richard bell of Air Forces we have to take some chances he's gonna come here's the Blitzer but watch him get picked up by number 12 Tony Fisher and one of those subtle things that you know couple coaches notice but a Fisher doesn't pick up then blitz right there back set so Notre Dame converts on third down there two for two on third down conversions here in the first quarter spoiled us nine minutes left in the opening period Givens in motion the handoff to Fisher tries to Center in the air force line against nothing stopped in his tracks by Kyle Allen Kyle Allen number 95 for Air Force typical of a lot of a kids at Air Force you know have a self-made player coming off the field field now a lot of these guys aren't highly recruited they have about a handful of guys that are coated by multiple Division one schools but most of them aren't mark highly recruited become airforce incredibly passionate about playing football and make themselves good players just like Kyle Allen is substitute for Notre Dame JW Jordan is in its center replacing Jeff fade oh the play-action fake rolling back sustained and throws incomplete out of bounds Gibbons David Givens has had a interesting year for the Irish what hasn't he done he's done you know really everything 19 carries 16 catches he's blocked a pun almost block one earlier here clearly out of bounds threw a pass last week so David Givens they respecting him to have a big you know productive year this year in indeed he s well it's third down again for Notre Dame and low Vecchio is two for two on third downs hold for three the rest of the time again if he reads a bliss he's supposed to audible to a double post or a quick screen high snap he pulls it down incomplete good pass rush thus far bye-bye air force that time he was Zack he's a Jack Johnson number 92 yeah the guy wasn't supposed to play much was a bad ankle but a good pass rush in this first quarter three is watch oh he hustles is number 92 Zach Johnson battling a very very sore ankle Johnson a junior from Junction City Oregon and on fourth down the air force blocks a lot of things that walk six this year joy Hill bowled a putt for Notre Dame - Scotty McKay [Music] I guess delay of game I don't know why they were waiting you know they must have you know I think that perhaps they're so concerned about the punt block they wanted it remains for 10 you don't you don't really see it in this is the part of the field going on here's some of the block hits that air force has had five mock kicks this year by five different players they've been unbelievable under Fisher Tavares era 64 block kicks since 1990 they come he'll bolt gets it away hey says clear-out takes a lateral bounce out of bounds and air force will take over when we return the Notre Dame Stadium the Falcons and fought the Irish to a standstill so far [Applause] phew Pumpkinhead and a Notre Dame Stadium might see anything this weekend have you gotten your Halloween costume picked out yet not yet I'm gonna have to work on there something horsey I assume Fisher tobira we mentioned a remarkable record at Air Force 17 this is 17 years the head coach was an assistant there for four years before that his wife finally got him to move off campus this year after 20 years on campus build a house off-campus first down for Air Force 755 left first quarter was scoreless therefore starting at its own 39 yard line quick past decent drop and it set up a little quick screen to brown Volare O'Brien and it right in his hands and simply dropped it multiple double slot a variation of the old you know wishbone or triple option you'll see some true triple option in an Air Force today they'll have other plays with a quarterback kind of keeps it it's called a midline option where he faced the full-back he's kind of ducks in they had a lot of the success with her midline option in 1996 when they beat Notre Dame here and then they throw the ball well so those old four three to start this game lets comes from Notre Dame and the option pitch michaei the corner and gets about two yards short of the first down Scotty McKay who is the fourth leading rusher for the Falcons but averages over five yards a carry stop with a free safety Tony driver yeah and this is the design of the often is to try to get these guys there's the first option fullback second is the quarterback third option is the pitch but one-on-one situations Glenn rule number 19 did a good job of fighting off a block just to get in you know just to get get down Chuck Peterson the offensive coordinator right there former player an air force third and two decent first down the initial air force first down rocky Boylan caught up with Deason ooh set sail on the option and kept it the prior one was a triple option this is the midline option the full-back goes a little bit tighter than the quarterback just ducks up into these in the the first hole he finds they get you have to be a tough guy to play quarterback in this option attack you're gonna take a lot of hits and it's really tough very tough to have touch throwing the ball coming in alma's eiga double Amma's egg on the lockers and should have gone outside so he cuts outside he maybe goes for 50 60 yards it was wide open to the outside i'm isaiah decides to cut inside and runs right will runs to darkness runs right to the end run to daylight Ricky but this thing was set up beautifully there at the very beginning we said hey they had to have a couple of trick plays right first maybe a halfback pass this thing is set up is a big old lane outside and finally a Glen Earle fighting off a block makes the tackle Earl on the field for the injured Ron Israel at strong safety made a big play second and six piece again incomplete Shane Walton defending Brian Lobosco Thiessen has yet to find his rhythm with a passing game again I think what a Notre Dame is doing it you know bump and run man for man this is Walton lawn Lobosco and often times in college football you see defensive backs the big cushion Notre Dame likes to crowd the wide receivers they play a lot of man-for-man and they give the defensive coordinator Greg Madison gives the cores their own their own progress he one of the bunker 1 5 third and six i-formation to ID receivers to the bottom of the screen decent rolls that way again is wide of his target fleming dicen not having a good start he has been wide or high on many of his passes and has yet to complete one he's out for five and he's had some guys open to tom so they've really airforces really missed some opportunities with great field position gather all awaits the Thompson puns boy you know Notre Dame has been sensational this year in the return game and they get their all returning two punts for touchdowns it really been good [Music] Thompson spud gather on says get away from it bounces right out of bounds in the neighborhood of the 15-yard line they'll market in about the 16 where the Irish will take over when we return the Notre Dame Stadium please adjourn back at notre-dame no score in the first quarter I'm Jim Graham now joined by a very familiar face to Notre Dame fans in fact he is the single season passing yardage leader broke Joe Theismann's record of 30 years ago good to see Jarius Jackson who's now with the Denver Broncos how much do you miss this atmosphere it's your first time back I missed it a whole lot I hope I don't be in tears before the day is over with but it just feels great to be back supporting the Irish I'm definitely seeing the fans that I've supported me for the last five years now how much have you talked to coach and to Arnez and to Matt and so forth while you're with the Broncos and how much contact if he stayed with the team well I'm trying to stay in touch with Don there's you know pretty much every Wednesday or Thursday night before you know they get really good some hotel for the games until just keep his head up and just play well but you know I mean the coach is pretty much talked every week but great to see Jarius good luck with the Broncos behind greasy and infrared thanks a lot thanks Bob all right back upstairs to you Tom all right Jim as Julius Jones breaks 111 yards and a first down CJ Zanotti on the hit for Air Force the Falcons have had the better field position here in the first quarter but nothing to show for it nothing nothing game with 540 left in the first period [Music] [Applause] towards 31 straight for hates against Nebraska I saw the scores 14-nothing Nebraska short game for Jones that time you know got stoned number 52 Matt Palmer made the stop this is a guy that 18 tackles a week ago he's played well all year that was kind of a direct hit and shot on Julius Jones but what met Palmer is particularly good at is kind of running plays down get very good foot speed senior from Boulder Colorado second leading tackler for the Falcons was the leading tackler a year ago wants to be a coach when his Air Force commitment is over and very Baker's always made cool curry resets as the Vecchio fix is tapped and sacked he went on the bacon bootleg and Michael Gallagher was right there waiting for it gallagher stops him for a big loss on the play remember Michael Gallagher is filling in for Cory Nelson was ordinary there big sack guy it's right off the corner and again a disciplined play which you kind of expect from these smart Air Force guys the bootleg away is supposed to you know make the outside linebacker kind of dropped inside he didn't stayed right there at home and makes the sack filling in for Cory Nelson who has six sacks of that position now has had seven for the year Gallagher's senior from Albuquerque was the deep snapper the last couple years primary from the shotgun la Vecchio steps up in the pocket now after two hours and lucky [Applause] at Notre Dame first down Jeff Overstreet chased him out but not until he gained 23 yards when initially it looked like he was in danger of being sacked big play biggest of the game thus far for the Irish and Kevin Rogers the offensive coordinator says you know we want our quarterbacks to be able to make impromptu plays that's why they switched to Matt Levesque you for Gary Godsey a few weeks ago and Kevin Rogers the offensive coroner says you know we really need you know 20 maybe 25 percent of our rushing yards there's Kevin right there to come from the quarterback position many of those on impromptu place low Vecchio breaking a tackle to get that run under way first an Irish at their own 45 Jones finds a seam takes it into Air Force territory down to the 48 where he's tackled by zanotti that was a pretty powerful run there by Julia Jones as he hit was a naughty the linebacker and just knocked him back another two yards five carries for Julius Jones now 35 yards he is game with just over three and a half minutes left in the first quarter nothing nothing Bob Davies Notre Dame team five and two and the Irish have out rushed the airport opposite thus far thanks Avengers pass gather all dropped it Paulie was defending for airforce and had a chance and he looked up to break on the football it looked like it may have been tipped I know there's a guy rushing in on Levesque you had to throw the ball a little bit high here comes to the Blitz who gets his hands up yeah that was a strong safety mind rod little ironic with the air force in here you think of that Air Force is a ground team and we said that they were much better in the passing lanes but neither team has been able to pass so far lo Vecchio it's only two four seven decent is blanked so far good pass rush thus far by air Jones hold it closed in a hurry he's close to the first down maybe just short beds on the spot of the football Matt Palmer made the tackle for Air Force along with number 99 justin pendrick hustling defensive tackle it will be just short of the first down so forth and less than yard and Bob Davies going to go for it the ball just short of the airforce 45 fourth down and less than they are in Air Force having trouble getting the right personnel on the field is forced to burn a timeout so Air Force takes time out low Venky on the Irish facing for Bell when we come back [Music] so today the air force nothing nothing in the first quarter 2:47 remaining in the period and Notre Dame facing a fourth down they have converted three of seven 43% this season Air Force has allowed two of seven four thousand conversions fourth and less than a our full house backfield Marie the fullback flanked by Fisher and Jones tight formation up front Levin Keough Fischer did just perfectly and gets it great second effort I think got it you got the first down Marston Kelly comes up from the safety spot to help the defensive lineman Tony Fisher he ended small thing the course of the season we'll watch the second effort by 2050 member earlier we watched him on up on deck he stopped there short of first but at the last minute he just kind of lunges take it over the line and pick up the first saved his quarterback from the sack earlier in this first quarter so you don't know you know like 25-yard verse but keep the keep possession [Applause] finally caught from behind by Overstreet but an 11-yard gain another Notre Dame first and any time you'd run in the ball that well over the center you know your Center two guards are doing a good job good double-team there Jim Jones and fain Jones does a great job of knocking his guy playing with an injured toe fain and Mike Gandy those three inside guys have had a pretty good pretty productive first quarter her now seven carries 48 yards for Julius Jones three of his seven carries had been for 10 yards or more he is again this time air force ready for him stop T maybe for loss of one Kevin Runyon made the big play for air force coming to NBC in two weeks points leader Bobby Labonte leads all and asked our heroes in one of the year's final races that Pennzoil 400 as he looks to lock up his first Winston Cup drivers championship but the Intimidator Dale Earnhardt hot on his heels continues his push for a record-breaking Winston Cup by Pennzoil 400 Sunday November 12th here on NBC gather all makes a diving grab short of the first down covered by Kurt Duffy second time the Irish have run that route first time the both times get there all has been open big cushion here as you can see when you see the corner the cornerbacks feet turned in you feel like you can break the outside cuz he's got a readjust to get back outside so there's strategies hey then the corners Kurt Duffy his feet have gotten fouled up to cover the other so Joey go there all breaks outside twice that time he catches it too tight in formation now Holloway and O'Leary Notre Dame has converted three of five on third down here's the option Notre Dame style close to the first down looks like he might have it Zach Johnson as air force gets a taste of the option on defense even with Matt Vecchio the Irish will run ten option plays maybe a game it'll pitch the ball on most of it turns out to be quarterback keeps he's got Julius Jones tripped railing against smart play by the Levesque you know is exactly what he needed for the first down didn't need to pitch to pick up the first first down Irish in the closing seconds of the first quarter ball at the air force 23 he's been very close to breaking one for a touchdown the air force finally stopped him and the 14 yard line and good offensive line surge again that time by Notre Dame Mike Andy out in front of Julius Jones Julius with a 55 yard rushing first quarter as the final second ticks away and that's the end of the first quarter at Notre Dame with Air Force and Notre Dame scoreless NBC Sports coverage of Notre Dame football will return after this message and a word from our NBC stations [Music] air force at Notre Dame scoreless as we start the second quarter but Notre Dame threatening with a ball just inside the air force 15-yard line you know that for a five traveling with the team in hard-to-get moon returned the red zone production has been for the Irish this season and on the 14 play of the drive they face a second and two the Penske and Murray two fullbacks into the game or if no excuse me it is no Penske replacing Murray he's in the Bulldogs lon and dropped for a loss on the play as the airforce defense was ready for the give to Jones Lipinski tried to lead block couldn't get a block also the plays a not even credit to the tackle with a lot of help his Richard Bell the defensive coordinator and he said to us this week you know we're gonna have to roll the dice a little bit take some chances when we get him in third down situations we're gonna try to blitz and create some negative plays now they've whoops a couple times they have not been able to create the negative plays yet third down Jones close to the first down Matt Palmer wrapped him up but the body lean by Jones enough to pick up the first it appears they'll take a long look at it you know football is awfully important to a lot of these guys you know again we talked about them not necessarily being highly recruited this is a guy it's a 90 that probably shouldn't be playing them he's got a really bad ankle sprain missed all of last year with a wrist injury but one of their leaders on defense we said talked to him yesterday said absolutely I'm playing today little bit short short of the first down it'll be another 4,000 attempt if bob davie chooses to go for it or kick the field goal let's see [Applause] these situations first thing defensively is you can't be offside then again a lot of times you know you see offenses try to go into either you know real hard count try to draw you offsides that's the first thing stay on site and then penetration that's the second thing defensively you need her name is already converted one fourth down on this drive again it's more than lesson in the art class backfield [Applause] [Applause] over the top looks like he has the first week so the second full pound conversion by the Irish he keeps the drive going Justin Henry stop Jones but he got the first down on the dive over the top well you get a chance to you know to die cuz every running back steps into thinking it means you're getting good lead box by your fullback what you did for Murray there and you're inside the interior offensive linemen are keeping guys down beau gives that guy a chance to dive otherwise if you get any penetration whatsoever you get hit the backfield so good surge for the offense one Julius Jones has carried ten times on this drive gaining 41 yards he's in the tailback spot on first down Rapp done with the ten yard line by Penry and Gallagher talked about Justin Penn Green number 99 a few plays ago one of those games that is banged up and injured you know the eighth game of every year everybody has to play with some injuries and he's one of those guys that kind of plays through him really developed into a very good football player this year for the Falcons but it's hard still plan memories from Bellingham Washington was the leading rebounder twice on a state championship basketball team one of the teams with 30 and OH right of the drive for a Notre Dame it comes from the ten yard plenty of time [Applause] it was defended well by air force right into the hands of Jamin hunter you know I think David Givens will just try to knock that ball away from the defender and it turns out he knocked into his own guy and we've all seen the tip we've always seen the tips are a little unusual and see if he's got a foot in there's the tip I think he's trying to knock it away from defenders and a heads-up play by Damon hunter looks like his right foot masseur I think his right foot was in there yeah really good play by David Gibbons to get set up for the extra points good what a long notre dame wise up with a flute ending with a look at the feet that I have one a bit on the in line maybe should not have been a touchdown Notre Dame gets a break in more ways than one they leave [Music] let's go back to the touchdown catch by Hunter and watch 21 Kent watch his left foot his gut looks like he's got possession there and there's his left foot in so oh he has the 1 foot and with possession of the ball that's a touchdown and there's the tip by Givens again I think Givens is trying to knock just knock the ball down there's the cat's left foot in in the touch so an 18 play Notre Dame Drive puts them up 7-nothing and now McNew set to kickoff to Palmer Masada it'll be taken by Amaziah dancing his way across the 25 to the 27 ricky Amaziah with the kickoff return for Air Force for more Fighting Irish sports information log on to und dot-com where you'll find highlights and audio clips of Notre Dame footballs coaches and players Plus each week und comm offers fans a chance to submit questions to a featured Notre Dame player you D not come the official athletic site of the University of Notre Dame there hasn't been much air in the Air Force attack so far as decent gives to the mate beard and beard plows straight ahead for a short game you know eight beers to carry they get that fullback going that's the first carry we've seen by a fullback and make their day with multi nature fullback so they get that fullback going and gaining a hundred yards they really are successful in the last time and nine times air forces fullback position has gained a hundred yards more they've won those games and they're 31 and six since 1990 it's that first option in the triple option they have won a whole bunch today they said the pass Fleming he holds on despite the vicious hit from Williams brach Williams hit him hard the big Ryan Fleming held on for 11 yards Ryan Fleming you know you have to play you have to be tough got to run routes over the middle but he get absolutely drilled by Brock wimps again one of those crossing routes expecting you know man from in coverage he thought Brock Williams would be out of that zone because he was on the other side of the field Brock williams stayed at home was his own kind of coverage and just drilled Fleming Fleming to the sidelines shaken though replaced by Lobosco as Thiessen completes his first pass of the game [Applause] it's about eight yards before he stopped by a driver and Earl is Ryan Fleming the air force leading receiver third leading receiver in the Midwest Conference shaken up by that hit from Williams did a great job to hold on to the football he's six foot six a big target and despite that he is pilot trained he has passed the pilot qualification just barely fits in the cockpit he was telling us it's a big cockpit to fit a six foot six pilot dodges one tumor and cuts up to midfield routes to the first down nice run by Liotta's Palmer the sophomore from Derry and Georgia much like Hilario Brown and Scotty McKay those kind of guys all five eight five nine and 175 280 pounds yet you wouldn't give him the ball 25 or 30 times a game in an eye formation but this kind of flow of offense we run a little options get guys in the corner on the perimeter one on one the Otis brown choose the Otis Palmer and the quality old brown and Scotty McKay all very very good on the corner of the defense they're gonna measure to see if Palmer picked up the first down since second if it runs but this part and just by inches Palmer did pick up enough Fisher to bury and the Air Force Falcons trailing by seven but picking up a first down right at midfield you know now Palmer is a converted quarterback and one of the things you know you always think about is of converted quarterbacks is that old halfback pass it's a good area of the field where you might run Air Force comes out of the i-formation now [Applause] Thiessen had trouble of the snap didn't get a good grip on it and immediately it's collapsed by scott vijay scott all over mike Thiessen that time you know if the irish go on and have a really good season I mean BG Scott will not be one of the stars or considered one but he is one of those unselfish guys number 93 right in here you know that have one of those guys the coaches love cuz he does exactly what they asked of them you know two years ago his defensive lineman then they moved them offense because they needed the backup center when he got six snaps at center last year they asked to move back on defense this year has started had his most productive year and one of those great team kind of players high school he said it really appreciates the experience Lisa and Tony drivers saves - touchdown as it is it covered 24 yards and at Air Force first down but three or four plays ago ryanflemington you know has to kind of limp off the field just because he got drill look at the play-action fake here good protection again a touch throw by Thiessen good move by Fleming you kind of faked a corner out broke over the middle and then the free safety has to respect the the option so much is generally defense Sophie's in a while to find his rhythm here he gives to the full-back beard on the option Leeson said just walking into the stadium told us yesterday he got goose bumps he said this is what you you play football for a situation a scene like this and perhaps to start the game he was still feeling a little jittery because he didn't have his passing rhythm and now with two straight completions to fleming perhaps he's found it yeah we had to remind him it was only Friday to do nervous today Air Force team went to the Hall of Fame yesterday as well and they all said it was one of the great experiences of their football careers eighth play of the air force drive here's beard now they're getting that fullback going with the three carries on this drive by the fullback again when you get that fullback running in this triple option it sets up everything as good more players have to collapse in the fullback then the quarterback fakes it to the fullback and he's then these undeterminable with you know an option to pitch or an option to keep it three carries eight yards for the fullback on this drive which now faces a third and four from the Notre Dame 23 they said we'll send Fleming wide to the right top of the screen and lay clock down to two and they'll have to call a timeout that's their second they've used tissue debería says all right and they'll talk about this third down play call it's seven up in Notre Dame second quarter [Music] in the second quarter with Notre Dame up by a touchdown this is the best drive by air force yet today and they've finally gotten that triple option going we seen a little bit of everything in the fake poll but there's one option hits the ball to Sky to Mackay get a nice little run then you get your quarterback going Mike beats another one of those quarterback duck plays in their mid line option so it makes them unique is there a village of [Applause] you're wide reciever taking shop 8 Fleming bounce right back and caught another big plan for over 20 yards but now Fischer to marry with a third and four from the Irish 23 yard line already the drive is covered at 50 yards and eight buds and this is where they like that midline option they take to the full-back quarterback keeps it's going to be a pass this has a man open and it's complete to cover topics three [Applause] the touchdown his first touchdown of the season boy terrific timing good play call by Chuck Peterson the offensive coordinator in that situation most this year that run that quarterback duck or midline option play they faked it started with protection and then Palmer made it real nice crossing around Dave Adams to attempt the extra point as this little ritual he goes through crouching down as you see him there and his extra point kick it's good so a law of Notre Dame Drive is answered by an air force drive down the field and Fisher de Bary in the Falcons have tied the game at 7:00 they went 73 yards in nine plays 445 off the clock say you know this is palm right here on this one he's this wing guy right here just gonna run this cross around but really set up by the fake and then good pass protection so you get the fake you get the pass protection and then there's the cross around watch how old buddy is good you know let him out didn't have to slow down to the ball the fact that he let him on that allowed him to catch it and get the endzone he throws it behind him he catches it in his tackle so thrown ball by Mike decent good call by Chuck Peterson and good execution by Lee Otis Palmer the former quarterback drops into the end zone for the first time this season Dallas Thompson now set to kickoff for Air Force this is again where Notre Dame has been awfully good in the return game driver and Jones the deep man as Thompson with a bare right foot sends it on its way this will be Julius Jones Jones it finally stopped at the 37 yard line by the kicker Dallas Thompson Toney driver who is the blocker who takes the most dangerous cover man sprays Julius Jones and special teams have been one of the great strengths as you noted earlier well it's a tional forth and kickoff returns seventh in punt returns net punting sixth in the nation that the only team in Division one a that ranks in three categories in the top ten yet terrific block lead blocked by Tony Driver but they've been doing this all year and you know you always look at at at the running back Julius Jones but set up by three or four different guys that was a 36 yard return and the best starting position of the game for Notre Dame will Vecchio from the gun heads into Fisher and Fisher fights his way for a yard stopped by Sam mine rod go in depth on the Fighting Irish by logging onto msnbcsports.com a special section NBC's Notre Dame central features expert analysis by our own cat Hayden and this week a special feature on Terrence Howard we had the big touchdown gallop against West Virginia last week plus video highlights postgame audio interviews with coach Bob Davie and key players msnbcsports.com official website of NBC sports scene Terrence Howard yet heavily though we have intercepted right through the hands of Cory Nelson Nelson had it but couldn't hold on who else it's got a bad shoulder Gouri Nelson is really very good he's number 42 in the right part of the screen had a chance point you know if you could have gathered himself clean lane is the end zone it was gone boy Nelson great pass rusher great block kicker six blocks there kicks in his career six sacks this game I'll excuse me this year for him to Vecchio pitching him at a 40% clip on the season he hits 58% of his passes his third and eight here [Music] Randolph Reyes at back at the 32-yard live by Matt Palmer remember we talked about Matt Palmer's quickness kind of a closing speed for a linebacker he's number 52 he's down here they actually in a stance and again a lot of big big push actually came right right there Matt Palmer over number 78 Jordan black footbed Palmer really good with his feet sideline to sideline that time on inside blitz Richard Bell said we've got to take some chances we've got a blitz against Notre Dame that time it pays off on fourth down Joe Hill ball will putt for Notre Dame Scotty McKay as Hill Bouldin moves it downfield McKay all the way back to the 15-yard line makes a nice cut to get free and then is tripped up at the 25 yard line on a shoestring grab by Clifford Jefferson 10-yard returned on the sidelines by regis philbin one of the big Notre Dame fans of all time reaches why is the Fighting Irish so important to you after all these years I never got over it you know I watched the band come on the field and I my tears of my eyes all welled up with tears I just have never gotten over my my four years here at Notre Dame now we'd like to play your own game with you a little bit things are a little different in our network we'll play for this NBC at a million dollars Jim great question the Mike Wallace of the sidelines not that tough here we go who holds the single-season passing record for the Irish Joe Theismann Joe Montana Jarius Jackson or Terry Hanratty single season passing record no lifelines Joe Theismann that was beaten last year by Darius Jackson's is that your final answer no Jarius Jack's is my final answer you get the hat Regis I'll take it great to see you everybody's happy for your success thanks very much good luck to NBC at Notre Dame and thanks for always promoting Notre Dame on your other shows back upstairs to you Tom all right Jim as Mike Thiessen breaks one for 24 yards for air now flag down intercept it if it stands I didn't take it off by Glenn Earl a flag and it looks like gonna call past and if errant seem like there's a lot of bumping and shoving but Glenn Earl number 19 pass interference against Notre Dame plumeria Brown was the intended receiver Earl picked it off Bob Davie does not like the call here we go Pat he had the no interference there that bumped yet no I think that is not pass interference that's that's a poor call wasn't even touched the Clinton all make something really nice plaid at ease obviously calling until he's gone on 25 Tony driver gets his head turned makes a play for the ball that's not pass interference but Glenn roll number 19 is making more and more points decent agrees with a call see applauds it a gives air force' first down at the Irish 36 556 remaining till halftime at Air Force driving in a 7 7 game [Applause] and hit hard at the 34-yard line still got about three or four yards Tony driver yeah it's kind of having such a great year for the Irish defense and you know when you tackle you go down it's kind of called running the alley and just gonna eat just kind of mirrors the quarterback a little bit behind him and when the quarterback finds that seam there's your free safety I mean four years free Safety's playing this triple option offense have had to be good tacklers and Tony drivers indeed that only two yards Fort Walton with the wrong way this time you're gonna see Scotty McKay on this pitch go wide watch everybody's going this way picks up a nice block there if Shane Walt really saves them saves the touchdown but get Chuck Peterson the offensive coordinator some credit he was successful with the call earlier in the game he'd know that the runner didn't make the right cut who comes right back that tenants gotta decay in a big plan masae got top of the screen Palmer in and he's to the 5-yard line where he's hit by Harrison flag flying in late dead ball personal foul against Notre Dame so second costly penalty by the Irish on this air force drive well it was totally scald dead ball personal foul on the defense half the distance to the goal automatic first down I think you're gonna call it on rocky boy Minh he gets chopped there and I think he gets the you know the retaliation the referees never see the first time right well in any event its first and bill air force at the Notre Dame to [Applause] to the one mid line option quarterback duck when he scored a lot of touchdowns running the football thrown nine but run run for eight most of them on that plane fake to the full-back keep it duck in behind your tackle ball spotted inside the Notre Dame one-yard line Fisher Demaryius Falcons with a beautiful drive aided by a couple of Notre Dame penalties Vincent sneaks flags are down they may have moved early never really understood what guys on the outside have to move early on a quarterback sneak but it looked like there's some early movement by air force dead ball false start [Applause] November 1996 they had to kick the winning field goal twice but you see this movement here early it's so instead of the ball being inside the Notre Dame one they'll spot it back at the 5-yard line it'll be second and gold first penalty against air force and here's where air force - now ever in that big line option but we're running Fleming has been a big target [Applause] those strings back to the line of scrimmage Tony driver again with a big defensive play Lance Maghrib pursuing down the line Tony Driver the free safety has been a sure tackler to fumble recoveries for putz downs against Navy a few weeks ago 48 tackles on the year he's got an interception and a timeout taken BJ Scott came off the field for Notre Dame appeared to be in some distress replaced by Wiz knee and that's Clifford Jefferson I believe it is Jefferson over on the airforce sideline [Applause] Jefferson Noah starting today is one of five defensive backs for Notre Dame he'll be replaced by Jason Bextra along this third down coming up remember Air Force had the ball inside the Notre Dame one now they face a third and goal again from the five as Jefferson being assistant over to the Notre Dame sideline all the way across the field Stephen Barbara Thiessen are here from Modesto California to see their son Mike hoping he'll be able to engineer a go-ahead drive here for the Falcons dad the high school principal coach and they were really pumped up yesterday in the stadium - or difference is Mike was again a couple options here is we talked about this third and five on the five-yard line and Steve knows all the options piece of those but again we get the big six six receiver Ryan we've been closely jokbal is lined up against the chain war whose five alone we'll Scott Becker is the holy setback pass deflected incomplete anthony weaver deflecting Thiessen's pass and it will be fourth down for air force and anthony weaver having a really big ease right down here really big season for the irish they've got 20 sacks on the year but it's not just the sacks is that they own it 18 all of last year its plays like that tip and balls playing you know sideline to sideline but defenses in was lined up to attempt to 22 yard field goal which would give the falcons the lead this kicker Dave Adams dead ball false start pretty unique routine does Dave Adams 27 ironically that's the distance of the field goal that air force kicked to beat Notre Dame in overtime here in 1996 the Dave Adams has a rather unique kicking style you're gonna see him crouch down lock put his hand up in the air to check the wind what's all that mean he's trying to join the rock cats I'm not sure what it means I think he said he didn't even realize he was doing don't realise until some BYU players pointed it at him and he's attemping a 27-yard field goal to give their force the lead it's up and it is good it works routine works for so big Madam's with a 27-yard field goal and air force has the lead for the first time ten seven over Notre Dame air force leads Notre Dame ten seven with 306 left till halftime the Falcons taking the lead on a 27 yard Dave Adams field goal and he has that unusual pre kick routine he was warming up before the game when we asked Dave what that was all about something you do and then you do it every time and I don't even realize I'm doing it you just dude kind of like someone who licks their lips a lot about something you always do I didn't know I did it feel cool like you pointed it out works works from nine of 13 of the year now well now they have to you know Air Force has to kick off to the day we talked about how a period and has been in the return game this year and they have just been spectacular so still 3:06 remaining in this first half money time from Notre Dame particularly when their special teams generally gets a pretty good field position it will be Adams that will kick off and touchdown returns both on interceptions kickoffs to punt returns to fight returns opportunistic Irish yes so Jones and Driver are deep the object is for driver never to field the ball unless it's inside the hash on his side he instead will fly it's a sprint kick and it goes out-of-bounds and solo today will take over at the 35 that's a narrow suppose for you a squib kick right down the middle so the Irish with good field position trailing now by three near the conclusion of today's game will select a Chevrolet player of the game from each team Chevrolet will make the contribution to each University's general scholarship fund Air Force tried to duplicate the upset they pulled here in 1996 the Falcons come in a two-touchdown underdog but leading by a field goal you look at you know the heights and weights the guys the speeds and Notre Dame's got all the great athletes and such there's Jefferson going into the locker room and you say hey you know there's no way Air Force can win this game but if you know they don't make mistakes they play smart they play hard they never quit and they play a lot of tight games with Notre Dame that's Givens resetting that you take will Vecchio [Applause] that night the last week against West Virginia he caught that same pass they follow the wheel route full touchdown Tony Fisher the head had matched up on the linebacker Ryan Finan which is what they wanted absolutely you know caught 16 passes a year ago it is really the same route right in the backfield EE and I think you felt the free safety coming over the top Jeff Overstreet and dropped a well-thrown ball while a vecchio freshman showing a little emotion that time he doesn't normally react but he thought he had six two tight ends here he's taken out of bounds for a loss of the play by Zanotti and Gallagher the linebackers intend to send an Air Force leaves you know you look at all these Academy games Notre Dame has played over the years they play they're tough see what happened in 1996 Air Force winning 2017 in overtime and then a 98 and they're the close one with army last year with Navy this is the biggest game on the schedule and you know they're the team the Notre Dame team and the crowd pretty flat here this afternoon here they're facing a third and 14 down and there's barely any noise in the stadium all the reverse first down the elusive two together on is unbelievable answer from Bhishma my high school my high school to let you know that the hizzle answer a fighting winter but I mean he is so good this is just a big old was a JIT Oh a wide receiver jet play trying to get his quickness on the outside I get a hustling just in pen dream and on fourth and one just short of the first down a bit of surprise this kind of field position I know you're trailing by three points the other names converted twice now in the same kind of situation this time they decide to punt then the fans reacting as the punt team came out on fourth down and a yard fair catch called for and taken by McKay at about the 13 yard line so the air force defense holds the Falcons get the ball back after a 43-yard putts and 154 showing on the clock till halftime coming to NBC next Sunday the SNL presidential bash is so big only one word can describe it strategic coming to primetime next Sunday on NBC [Music] will you be relieved with his elections over first down play it's the option and the pitch and he's nudged out of bounds by Jason banks raw after a pretty good gain on the play you know when they started getting their passing game going you mentioned you know that late first quarter that the offensive complex and the game really changed Mike Thiessen got the passing game going to his big wide receiver Ryan Fleming began to run the full-back some had some success there now they're pitching the ball outside so they've got all four of their options for Chuck Peters in the offensive winner all four of their options going right now well Mario Brown picking up seven yards on that play and now Fleming and Armas eiga two wide receivers McKay in motion decent comebacks and it's complete for the first down to Fleming and a flag a late flag down as Fleming is tackled by Belgium at the 30 well he gets great body position doesn't he funny it's a lot like rebounding you get in the right position to get a rebound and same thing with catching a pass interference against Notre Dame [Music] [Applause] Ryan Fleming pass interference on the defense penalty is declined first down so the Air Force were the first down at the 30 yard line my condition is meld is passing rhythm after a shaky start decent by the way an all-american baseball player at air force who's led the Mountain West Conference twice in batting McKay handoff on the delay on the draw play and the cave about three yards explants Legris the tackle Thiessen an excellent lace ball player twice as we said led the league in hitting hitting over 400 both times he's a center fielder starting his career as a shortstop in perhaps has a future in baseball with hidden in three straight games a record pitch tomorrow turns the corner rips off about nine yards Sapp gets him out of bounds sense and see a growing confidence in this air force to salute you know again these guys are smart there's no quit them they're playing hard every day and know the name flat would get sort of the problems defense is play okay but I think the end of the offense still struggling some it'll be third down in about a yard for air force with a clock showing 109 second quarter me Tarver got it got the first down across the 40 line which will stop the clock on the tackle Scott for Notre Dame if Eason has to get his team in and out the home they've got good field position minute four I'm surprised actually they're even in the huddle because once they set the yard markers they stop start the clock again clock rolls now shows a minute now 59 58 decent what's downfield there's the jump ball at that time Walton got in there get away from Ryan flooding this swamp way go by theis the filter double coverage of his wide receiver says hey I've got a height advantage give a chance throw it short sometimes the underthrown deep ball is the best ball you can throw but really good recovery there by Shane Walton to knock it away Walton 511 to Fleming six six been able to jump up and bat it away second and 10 with 49 seconds save a couple reverses don't have fat passes yet thanks cuz every perfectly read by Anthony deadly Denman nearly got there in time to intercept the ball on his screen fans thought he was a receiver Palmer caught it and Denman immediately dropped it I'm out Notre Dame was 35 seconds and a third and 15 for air force they they want to force one more punt of airforce Notre Dame has blocked three punts this year Dave Adams warming up but if he kicks a field goal from here he is he'll be all-america he just wants to practice that routine again and don't forget coming up at half-time the Sun America halftime report and a storm we'll have scores and highlights including that Nebraska Oklahoma game and an XFL draft update that's all on the Sun America halftime report with Hannah in New York those reports I'm gonna get drafted by the LA extreme the 55th round 5555 round is that you go [Laughter] thank you you know the XFL fix the LA extreme the general manager Johnny McKay's has yet to be over six feet to the plane lovely fat on third and long Air Force has converted only one this is a third and extra long 1315 and what you see is a real quick timeout if Notre Dame stops and quickly try to force that last punt perhaps go for the block now when you expect to see airforce take any chances they'd love to go into halftime with Ally [Applause] nissim straight drop back and sat that's gonna be a quarterback draw before he ever had a chance to set up the draw Harrison was there in a hurry Weaver was there this was going to be a quarterback draw all the way step back and then run right up through here Vittorio Harrison number 55 and it disrupted from the very start now their names a bit of a dilemma you know they're really good you know on punt block but the great in returns right so you know and then they really go hand in hand if you put a lot of pressure on the punter you know the recovery guys have to stay in and protect and that leads to a lot of good returns we mentioned twice this year Joey gather all has gone the distance rarely does he fair catch and the Irish as you see with one timeout left and 30 seconds remaining till intermission Fisher to bury in the Falcons hoping to go in with the lead they're up 10 7 on Notre Dame earlier in this game David Givens there does a little bit of everything to the Irish nearly blocked a punt his number six kind of comes up through the middle a lot Dallas Thompson is the Air Force putter and Joey get thrown the jumpy standing back at the 30 as you said two touchdowns on punt returns a pudding and West Virginia last week [Applause] Irish look like they're gonna come out good protection though and Thompson another booming punt gather all back at the 21 yard line surrounded by white those time good coverage by Air Force 46-yard Thompson puds and well covered by the Falcons you mentioned that Dallas Thompson was to get kicked that winning field goal in 1996 Italy against the Irish a little bit might have been a takedown by Cossack on the return team ten yards from the end of the kick Chris Yura one of the great special teams players for the Irish had been called for that block in the back so the ball now back to the 12 yard line near his 23 yep the Chrissie era gets called there but this year's had a big year for the Irish on special teams Sola Vecchio comes onto the field with a first down at his own 12 do you just yeah pack it in here and I would reroute y'know I wouldn't take a chance here this area the feelings right but again a far chick offensively they really haven't done much at one good drive one very long 18 player libecki Oh takes a knee the first half and a surprising first half as Air Force will go to the locker room in front it's Air Force leading Notre Dame 10 to 7 at halftime the Dame had a long drive to take a seven nothing lead they went 18 plays in that drive then Air Force answered and a 27-yard Adams field goal gives them the lead and Fisher to Mary the air force coach with Jim Gray all right thank you very much Tom Fischer good first half for you he's surprised that you've been able to move the ball as well as you have against no no not really Jim we hadn't moved it enough to get it in the end zone we've boarded a couple of scores down there we had a reverse it was wide open we run into a guy we go down and jump offsides on one-yard line whenever we score a touchdown we don't have more points on the board and we got right now but you got to be happy with what you see certainly maybe nobody other than your team would expect you to be in this position to that well I disagree with you there our football team expected to be in this position and we expect to have more points at the end of the game I can assure you that all right Fischer thank you for your thank you luck in the second half upstairs to your top all right Fischer to Barry wants for his Falcons you have the halftime lead ten seven now let's send you to Hannah Storm and the SunAmerica of time studio [Music] halftime at Notre Dame Stadium and air force excited about a 10-7 lead over the others as we get ready to start the second half we heard from Fisher to Barry just before halftime fats and the he wanted more and I think that he is not surprised to be in this position in fact Air Force outplayed Notre Dame with the first day absolutely expected to win didn't expect to win the second half they've played him close to played him tight you know it means so much to these guys this for this football game but interesting first half couple of everything touchdowns the first one gets that one foot in the end zone they had possession and got his left foot in before he went out did have did possess the ball touch the left foot down but then a terrific really crossing route to Palmer we had well thrown away from the defender a lot of dance at the end zone that tied the ballgame and then there of course came back with a field goal a little bit later on yeah air force had the ball actually inside the one yard line a Notre Dame before a penalty put them back and they had to kick the field goal otherwise they might be further ahead and Notre Dame just appears to be flat and that the first and well if you look at the statistics too and the air force is really ahead in all the categories they've thrown four more yards they've run for more yards they've not turned the ball over there they're playing harder I mean and almost and they only had two penalties the first half did air force so when you combine all those things you know they're leading they should be so air force out playing Notre Dame in that first half and winning every statistical category as you see let's go down to Jim Gray to see what Bob Davie thinks through these all right thank you time coach what did you tell your team at halftime be concerned with the way they played in the first thing yeah we need to play better offensively we turned the ball over the first series of the game Julius Jones we dropped the wheel pass to Tony Fisher that might have been a touchdown defensively I thought we played okay I mean they ran some reverses on us and we had a couple pass interferences to the bottom line we got to go play better weren't we're in a dogfight right now against a good football team that's what we expected but there's a lot of football left Jim coach thank you good luck thank you all right Tom upstairs to you all right Jim Air Force after only 13 yards total yards in the first quarter came up with a hundred forty-seven in the second and the opposite as you might expect for Notre Dame 107 yards first quarter only 17 in the second quarter yeah and if first real air force really had it going in in all phases of the option then you talk so much about their offense but air force defense has done a pretty good job too putting pressure on Matt Levesque eyo you know fighting off blocks making plays but you know once again at the start to second half air force kicks off we've talked about how good Notre Dame has been in the return game and so Notre Dame for the very beginning of a half puts pressure on you when they receive a kickoff right away got how good they are on kickoff returns and you see where Julia's Jones and Tony driver the two men that are back to accept this kickoff rank in Notre Dame kickoff return history Tim Brown has sensational career here but as you mentioned you know Gurley Tony driver is there to block for Julius Jones there's driver 25 as Dallas Thompson will kick it off for Air Force to start the second half this will be Julius Jones at the 46 yard line by Tony litters 41 yard return and it worked just the way they played yeah you know here's driver and number 25 the lead got right there watch he's just gonna drill his guy good blocks down just knocks the defender down if top said that's a slowing down here he's going and over again motive ain't doing it is not just Julius Jones it's all the guys that send him up on that kickoff return - got some great lead blockers in concluding we just saw 20 driver Jones stays in at tailback lo Vecchio only 4 of 11 in the first half Givens the motion man resets on away genius Jones fights his way across Minister for territory to the floaty 9 yard line where he's stopped by Matt Baume first half possessions really wasn't 1td driving it the other numbers are pretty ugly but you know that another name needs more of those 4 yard runs Tom you know it just seems either they have that real long run and then the rushing game or a lot of one into your against they need that they need a drive with four yards and five yards here six yards there people coming out of the stands running across the field just as Lou Vecchio was about to acceptance them [Music] they'll go back into the huddle play clock reset in the sense that Kevin Rogers the offensive Warner bob bob davie the head coach would love to see a little blinded out kind of drive for yards here six yards there that's Halloween weekend and the Irish trying to shake the goblins get their offense going libecki Oh hands to Joe [Applause] first and west listen made the saving tackle for the air force pretty good day for Julie's Jones 55 watt rushing in the first quarter and runs like that but it's gonna return games will have been sensational this is a return of the second hand with a big return and Julia's now scaried 16 times for 69 yards gets a rest on the sidelines replaced by Fisher as a hip corner and had a hit 400 come into the ball game for the official that appeared to be the same play almost as Jones had run Tommy and again Captain Rogers the offensive coordinator good calling because I think you guess chefs running the play just kind of keep hammering at people do they should slow down or stop and you would think that Notre Dame had who visited think of physical mismatch pent-up ound and ant airflows air force a little bit and get some more of game to the air force defense as we said pretty quick slide off box very quickly and make a lot of place second in fact the handoff the fishing brings it to the outside and is written out of man's bike lesson after picking up another Notre Dame first down well clearly that was their spot listen at halftime Bob Davie went in today guys began to get the second half kickoff let's get ourselves a nice return again as week because he won't dare they do it but they were going to take some shots running the ball right at the Falcon defense it's five straight runs on this Drive all to the tailback Jones and then Fisher so the ball spotted at the 30-yard line of airforce Notre Dame for the first down opening him to the second half [Music] Fisher Fisher's shorter game this time mine rod up for the strong safety spot to make the initial hit for air force [Music] Blitzer for air force you know what makes you good books are just not a tough guy that comes a guy that really has good timing and you know studies a lot of tape knows when the the cadence of an offensive team has a pretty good feel of when this balls gonna be stamped and can time his flips according to snap camp my rod is a pretty good job of that rocks brother Adam played football at Navy one of the Air Force mainstays now second and eight for Notre Dame from the I formation again fake to the tailback you know you talk about the terminal um sometimes won't you see this rapper you get a chance to say this is a determined right by joey guila because he gets stoned the only network get the rap just got drilled by the defensive back I think it was boot gulag [Applause] only takes him about a step or two to get the full speed so even though he kind of stopped two steps little back and full speed 28 yards strike low Vecchio together all and now the extra point from set up [Music] [Applause] so Notre Dame takes the second half kickoff marches down the field no Vecchio together all and no-name recaptures the lead [Music] let's go back to the touchdown - Joey gather all he's down here matched up one-on-one with Joel Buell you lo and the first half they were in two out and ups this time it's to fake the out you all know he's in trouble kind of stops in which you can do in college football down the field but then the quickness of Joey get there all is able to separate from you lo there again and then a very happy for man who loves to come fix great protection and then contact I love it here and then a very happy 18 year old freshman and thise until Vecchio nearly identical stats to this point of the game the Vecchio does have the one additional tips down pass on the tip ball identical statistics said now libecki oh and his Irish teammates have taken the lead McNew onside kick attempt [Applause] moments next remanded in his hands but couldn't hold on and Air Force will take over in good field position Backstrom had it perfectly and could not hold on he may have scored yeah and that this is well scouted goes 10 yards Backstrom's number 27 is a big learning oh there's a little opening there for him well they just got together and then he's down the sidelines for another 15 20 yards perhaps but Andy rule pounces on it for the air force that's good Scout II they just did the execution just didn't happen so Air Force has it at the 43 [Music] first play from scrimmage in the second half for the Falcons a keeper find Eason for two yards to the 45 and this time next week we'll be at Churchill Downs in Louisville starting at 1:00 Eastern Time on NBC the 17th Breeders Cup championship day from Saint Churchill Downs home of the Kentucky Derby have you ever seen a 70 million dollar horse well there's one in your picture that's fusa Ichi Pegasus winner of this year's Kentucky Derby sold for 70 million he'll be the favorite in the Breeders Cup Classic that's a week from today the Breeders Cup from Churchill Downs what Easter the pitch to midfield taken out of bounds by driver and boy Minh and bringing up a third down for the Falcons first half possessions and air force took them a while to get going so three straight punts there but boy once they made it to get that passing game going a little bit open up that fourth option they really became a lot more productive Eason got hot third down and three option and the pitch is to plow trapped and taken down or Rocky Point well they play that option well rocky Boylan and his teammates stringing it out to the sidelines and then taking brown down it Hannibal Lecter played for motor days maybe rocky Boyle I'm convinced rocky moment is just got all kinds of hustles number 30 right here first it kind of forces the pitch then he keeps up Beckstrom that's a good job slows them down and Bowman finishes him off gather all awaiting the punt by taxi [Music] despite the Irish Rush gather are rare fair catch taken at the 15-yard line 37 yard punt as the Notre Dame defense holds now the Irish get their offense having regained the leaf I'm getting little chilly in the shade perhaps here at Notre Dame Stadium Tom Hammond Pat Haden Jim Gray with no today leading air force 14 1010 32 left in the third quarter word from the Irish side line is that Clifford Jefferson who was shaken up in the first half as sprained an ankle and will not return to the game today but the Irish offense on the field at the moment first down the throat 16 [Music] possession the Air Show is the best ride for dead no Tom yeah really because they got some of those four and five yard runs and that's set up the out up to Joey together on yeah they pounded the tailback play after play get a good yardage on it and then get the big strike for the end zone Julius Jones now up to 74 yards rushing on 17 carries and they'd rather see a lot of four yard runs from Julius Jones then you know 40 yard runs and one yard runs he picked up five on the last one shoots Gibbons who had broken free did he ever met Levesque you know he was inaudible so you know starting with the head of matmo Vecchio good audible sod he was coached to call the audible but then he's got to give it a little bit more air it's trying to drum up the ball there - David Gibbons who had run in a post route gives a little bit more air perhaps he can run under it looking into the Sun to get the signal from the sidelines the freshman quarterback from Franklin Lakes New Jersey he is mature beyond his years been playing quarterback since third grade [Music] in the shotgun here on third and five yeah to retreat to get some space and that's picking up the Irish first down across the 30 days we joined you you know in the first half they ran a couple of out patterns they're in Tula this is one he caught and what does that do that sets up the out and up fix the a we got the pump fake from ATLA Vecchio fights through some traffic - that's a nice punt returns as Wells and Joey gather all set a really productive day for the Irish as you see three receptions for 48 yards including the score first downloader Dame Gibbons in motion [Music] Jones one man in the backfield julian gains a yard or two before he's collapsed by CJ Zanotti Zanotti from Bay City Michigan and he said he had a big contingent coming down to the holidays game they get bonus points on defense when you play really well CJ's nit gets a lot of bonis particularly after that then the Navy game this year 19 tackles couple of sacks wow there's a injured Notre Dame player Jordan black starting left tackle Texas 310 pounder his second year as a starter [Applause] much-improved offensive line for the iris this year over last year's edition yeah they give it a you know a lot fewer sacks there's certain stall and it's productive as they want in the running game of my passing game they've been much better and while we have a moment we remind you that the biggest night on television is back Thursday night don't miss must-see TV with all new episodes of friends Hearst Will & Grace just shoot me and of course er must-see TV Thursday only on NBC er he's yep working his way slowly to the sideline you know Jim Jones the guy who plays left in the left guard has turf toe though he's playing today so that whole left side of the offensive line for Notre Dame is his injured right usually John Teasdale is kind of the swing tackle can play hider tackle and he is in Teasdale is to replace fly starter last year was Jim Teasdale pretty good senior from Kansas City six five three hundred and five pounds [Music] second a nine for the Irish libecki Oh drops it the two times on this on this drive bill didn't Adam you know David Givens will the player Jaden hunter that time but pretty good thrall just maybe two inches too long one on one coverage Tony matters covers you've got to get your hands up a little bit manners didn't get his hands at all on G even hunter allowed him a clean release hunter did have his hands on the ball just on the end of it and couldn't quite hold it so it is now third and nine four of seven today on thirty long [Applause] libecki on the shotgun therefore showing blitz though they picks it up and nearly intercepted incomplete attack Johnson's there's one of those inside linebackers got her hand up you know sometimes you blitz you get to the quarterback sometimes you just get your hands up and you get you get a tip ball yeah I think was 54 CJ's anodic perfect timing to tip the ball and then Johnson may wonder that's a nose tackle trying to make that fun Johnson Joey Joey hill bold to Mackay on the punt it will go out of bounds at around midfield Duffy I think Kurt Duffy got a piece of that one that is their sixth block of the year Kurt Duffy with the block punch it only travels 16 yards after Duffy got a piece of it great field position for Air Force when we come by [Music] 8:31 left third quarter 14:10 Notre Dame but airforces just parsley blocked a punt and they have been extra special in the block kick Department it's given them a first down at the Notre Dame 49 yard and it's it's this year but 64 since this year meant to very to go [Applause] decent fakes the handoff rolls and delivers the pass complete to beard is fullback and he's knocked out of bounds after a seven or eight yard gain by broccoli others they may bury one of the two fullbacks they use big strong powerful legs there's Nate beard and 510 to 220 pounds 33 inch waist by size forty pants to be fit those fears from Halloween there's Nate strong runner really strong room give a legate a five on the play so it's second and five and the--some changing the play it's the option they're the best all the way to the Notre Dame 35 yard line they just keep coming after air force all the campus trip there's no quit matter what to score they never seem to you know lose their sense of confidence and my vision has an air of confidence about him that he kind of rubs off on players one of the leaders on this team in his a leader because was a work ethic and because he produces you don't lead just by personality he's a guy that said a lot of production Eason is a senior from Modesto California [Applause] the defense and apparently changing the play got the playoff fits the option [Applause] when Rose had a great year on special teams theaters but now as a defensive player the last couple of games he's really come up decent had put together a nice run and then they just lost the football and he had it secure he just took a shot rim free yeah Anthony Denman I think it was Tony driver maybe that ripped it free what of them drivers been running man alley all afternoon and again it wasn't you know careless ball carried by Mike theis of a good defense by Tony driver and Anthony Denman that's a big play it gives the Irish the ball on their own 25-yard line they lead 1410 7:47 left third quarter [Music] hamsters tailback Fisher he's driven back by the center of the Air Force defense Julius Jones actually Palmer leading lead offensive charge for the Falcons one turnover each for these teams not many penalties Air Force has to obey what he has for the birthday the second half has played a lot better a few more of good grinded out runs and the big pass plays to join together all second down a nine Rebecca the corner sit down sort of the first down by Palmer met Palmer's having quite a game in the center of an airforce defense Matt Bomer and we talk about men good foot speed closing speed like he's almost like a DB and defensive back and yet he's know he's been stout enough inside to kind of take some of those direct pull back and halfback attacks pretty well Matt Levesque yo now has carried five times for 21 yards he has a third and one [Music] [Applause] Gleason made a saving tackle on Julius Jones who is approaching 100 yards rushing in this game now with 87 on 20 carries a good crease on the right side Jim Jones number 55 did the grape joke kind of coming around Jason Murray fooled it kicks his guy out with the dominate he blocked by Murray but just enough to spring Julius Jones Jones has been the workhorse for the Irish today and I'm a little surprised that we haven't seen Terrence Howard at all he had the 80-yard touchdown gallop against the Mountaineers last weekend in a week before he had a real nice game against Navy [Applause] Jones again this time it stopped for no gain let's check in the Jim Gray all right thank you very much time with a very special guy in fact he's been here for 76 years 806 year old Victor couch Victor you were hired by Knute Rockne to be an usher when you were 12 years old how did that happen why is he new Arachne wood because you could use them to help seat the people in the bleachers because bleachers were kind of hard to obtain of Gavi age because they were started like this and especially the older me enough younger guys they just bounce up there like everything you know we help the older men up and get this seat with it hardly any women ever came to those games it was more congratulations it's been a great career the reason he is retiring Tom he has to come too early to get a parking space doesn't want to do it anymore just gonna watch it on TV up to you boy barking is something your daughter Damon he started back at old Cardy a field before the stadium was even built and the great traditions at Notre Dame pass was complete to Gibbons on that last play it's third and three [Applause] and dropped by listen again he saved the touchdown of Jones very near to breaking it it goes for 12 yards you know Jordan black we saw him look awful I'll bet he's back in and he's one of the guys that drew to keep Arthur in the offensive line and they're big and leave by Jason burn this Murray gets his face mask indeed get out of his way there's Jason Murray Jordan black the result is the first down for the Irish so one yard away from the century mark first down at the airforce 36 your math is impeccable [Applause] but that's the kind of thing that's happened to the Irish may have the nice and gain and then gets to to your gloss just past it for the Air Force Falcons put quite a frightened to the Irish early they lit at halftime ten to seven Notre Dame took the second half kickoff marched down for the go-ahead touchdown 1410 and Fisher Tavares Falcons now backed up to their own 37 with Notre Dame facing a second and ten [Applause] the Slovakia [Applause] [Music] number 56 has put the pressure on la Vecchia but Julius Jones you know usually Tony Fisher runs that wheel route that time Julius Jones comes out of the backfield and boy he was open but the rush by Gallagher prevented the completion the Jones to the sidelines and Tony Fisher's in Gallagher goes out as well the leprechauns victory quite yet the dense Halloween costumes everything begins just give me an idea oh my god I'm going as a semicolon again [Applause] touchdown Jim Jones that made the first block to springing it covers 37 yards in an Irish touchdown [Music] [Applause] the two touchdowns you know one wasn't out enough no kind of setup before then that one is a reverse and you mentioned Jim Jones the offensive lineman really battling with a real bad turf toe who throws the the key block to the reverse Nik Center for the point after touchdown [Applause] and he sends it through [Applause] so the Irish have expanded their lead to 2110 mister knew everything David Givens with some great blocking easily into the end zone and Bob Davies Irish go 75 yards in 10 plays [Music] [Applause] all right can you see the little wider perspective sink see what happened there guys okay roll it okay good good go start it there if that's okay it's pretty yeah nicely designed [Applause] okay you do this one first let's gather all first right well I can't see it from that angle yeah yeah yeah okay here and here okay whoops that's gonna figure eight okay got his get rolled out first and he handed it to given Skinner [Applause] okay okay late a third quarter a Notre Dame up 21 to ten beautiful call by camp and Rogers the offensive board there here's Joey gather all Heels get runs double reverse and watch the how much room there is if at the top of this screen and then they say this this is Jim Jones right in here it gets the last block gets in his way we got perfectly executed you spend all week designing those kind of plays and every wants to know the execution - exactly it's certainly getting here you know - Givens does everything special teams player great special teams player runner receiver blocker and passer watch with pea what else MacDill to kick amazon and palmer that eat men and he'll bring it out to the 25 23 yard return and now the pressure on the air force offense and their quarterback might be senator last possession they moved the ball he fumbled it Notre Dame turned it into a touchdown well she won our hearts in the 98 winter olympics becoming the youngest ever figure skating champion tomorrow at 2:00 Eastern watched Tara Lipinski take on top pros in an encore presentation the metabolite World Professional Figure Skating Championships tomorrow at 2:00 Eastern here on NBC obsolete decent against tobacco [Applause] did well to get back to the line of scrimmage valerio Brown stopped by rocky Bowman well Scott Becker in at fullback now for the Air Force Academy grew up not too far from here in Granger Indiana always wanted to play in the stadium but before that he actually worked in the stadium I'm work doing the concession stand selling some hotdogs there's him there's his beat and not only did he work at the concession stand but occasionally he would sneak out he'd head up that portal and watch some of the action he didn't care much about selling the hotdogs it was getting in the stadium to watch with his dream was to play here and he is not in another the Air Force team as tisha keeps to the 30 and there's a look at Scott Becker ironically when he was at Penn High School he won the moose Kraus award in the stop by the statue of moose crowds outside the stadium here as they came to visit yesterday tremendous student really smart guy he told us he subscribes to the New York Times The Wall Street Journal The Economist in foreign affairs we said the avid do you read oh hey and he does he relating to the Economist tonight that's nuts [Applause] third and six for air force these have dropped back top of the ball picked it up again still on his feet and it'll be stopped after a maybe a yard game by Anthony Denman but quite an athletic play night Thiessen just to do that shake a couple of tackles but you don't seem to shake the tackle avanthi did rhino and he were a great play by theis and just to keep this one alive Brock Williams number one off the corner has a shot on Harrison has a shot at him Anthony Weaver three guys miss him but if they dance didn't get it gather all awaiting the punt by Thompson Dallas Thompson gather all let's hit hit it'll be down by air force at the iris 32 yard line pop comfort 41 yards and the Falcons on the short end of the score 21 10 wings clipped so far [Music] well celebrating a productive third quarter here at Notre Dame is the Irish trailing and a half time have taken a 21-10 lead the two teams have alternated quarters in terms of their productive offenses fans excited to keep reminding you it is Halloween weekend yeah if they're already they're already primed Notre Dame with the first down just less than a minute left in the third quarter some Air Force picked up by he has time to forget he's gone mr. electricity joke get her on with another great cats this one covered 68 yards as he maintained his balance barely to get into the end zone Nick Senna for the extra point attempt [Applause] [Music] it went through anyway partially blocked and it still makes it through the uprights so its twenty eight to ten Joe together all four catches a hundred sixteen yards and two scores Richard bell the defensive coordinator said we're going to bless the glisten one linebacker one strong safety but still picked up offensive line did a great job of picking that up that lets even though the Vecchio got hit late and then well he lays this one out a perfect post pattern you know you're gonna get man-to-man coverage when you feel that strong safety blitz it usually means gonna have a lot of room in the middle of the field throw it up high give it some air and let you wire see 100 and I'm not sure you could have thrown that ball any further in a yeah on the scene of his pants set that watches gather all stuff all into the end zone yes [Music] you know what a difference in this second half by the Irish I think they scored on all three of their drives the second half a couple of big tasks place Matt Levesque yielded you in general one has the feeling that Bob Davie might have read them the riot act at halftime as they were a different team to start the third quarter and now with 46 seconds left of that period McNew will kick off again Palmer and muzaka await that news kickoffs bazinga from the two to the 27 yard line about a 25 yard return Fighting Irish football returns to BBC in two weeks the final home game as Notre Dame takes on Boston College you know Boston College has a pretty good running back I'm looking forward to seeing Willie green Kent fashion William green he's 10 touchdowns over six yards per carry second leading rusher in the Big East kinda guy that breaks a lot of tackles got some pretty good outside speed that's Boston College in Notre Dame Saturday November 11th here on NBC [Applause] they're forced out trailing 28 to ten this Thiessen looks over the defense which is shifting back and forth two seconds on the play clock flag now comes down I don't think it was delay though I think it's something else Weaver made the tackle on the full-back beard so an illegal shift by Air Force as they were disorganized from the start on that one apparently if we go shift on the offense five yards remains first down that's the referee Claire Nelson to talk to them a little bit before the game Southwest crew yeah sixth grade teacher and science teacher in Denver giving the T to the his class the whole week off next week to trick-or-treat Pacific yeah whole week the plates the past about now even though airforces is by you know option standards a good throwing team I mean this is situation down twenty eight to ten I mean they're a good throwing team but only when they have the threat of the option and threat of the run to make them a good option a good join team and that completed pass will bring the third quarter to a close that's the end of the third quarter at Notre Dame Stadium with the Irish leading 2810 we'll be back after this message and a word from our NBC stations [Music] the traditional salute to the 1812 overture but she thinks he's annoyed hook em horns ready for Halloween around her what are you going is semicolon yeah everyone is a comma I thought it was a dollar side very flexible 21 sync third quarter in favor of the Irish puts them up 28 10 as we start the fourth decent pass in traffic Amaziah made the catch despite the defenders being there finally dragged down by Glenn Earl Earl's done a pretty good job at the strong safety spot spelling the injured Roy in Israel today special teams also today in the whole season hit and Virginia Tech tied at halftime hope he's getting in battle from the Panthers and Clemson trails Georgia Tech in half done the rank teams having some problems organ time the pitch as the first down he crosses the 45 to the 47 13-yard gain Scotty McKay man a nice block for it you're right it's got you those lead backs really do have our good blockers number 30 just right there on Beckstrom allows Brown to reach the corner it was just trying to cut him you know cut back inside to create a little bit bigger bigger running Lane Nate beard the full-back also had a key block on that run meanwhile there's a key air force injury Ryan Fleming their top receiver the second time he's gone down this game it took that tough hit from Brock Williams remember in the first half and held on to the football kind of limped off the field but returned and now they tend to Fleming and we'll take a break we're back at Notre Dame here's Ryan Fleming number 5 in the white air force who took a shot on that last play and then while they was down apparently we kicked in the head after sailing by rocky boy right there yep so Fleming able to walk off to the sideline replaced by Lobosco of course Thiessen surpass the catch taught by Lobosco and immediately hit by Shane Walton but it's good for 12 yards and a foul at first I thought he was throwing to Fleming who is 6 6 a little bit high to lovasco 5 9 but really made a real nice catch you know when guys he's down here makes this play get him get his hands up no bobble just like a you know a vacuum cleaner just gonna suck that thing right up no bobble and you know when you get hit you don't you don't lose the ball meanwhile Fleming is back in the game on this first down play [Applause] stem for a loss in the way seems to make a lot of clothes doesn't it'll be those top tackler topics of the Irish top tackle for lost number 39 he's gonna come ere he is right there he'd just read it perfectly yep and ran down a piece and from behind good closing speed and he Brock Williams I think you know their attitude is so infectious on the team that this defense has been much more aggressive sooner than they were a year ago but I think even more so than they were in the first game reverse but Kenny's picking his way forward we know they will gain a couple of yards Shane Walton was ready for it and looked like Notre Dame expected some sort of gadget play and we're ready for it well an Air Force you know it's going down it's 12 minutes left here in this in this fourth quarter probably is gonna have three maybe four possessions so everyone really precious which across the 50 in particularly you have to think about being in the four dead zone and maybe going for so this becomes a very very big play at third and third and 11 air force land at halftime ten seven over Notre Dame but the Irish had 21 unanswered points in the third quarter third and 11 [Applause] Thiessen got a block from beer and sponge flipping he had to come back to get it will be tackled short of the first down let's see his forward progress will be closed Shay Walton drove him backwards Fleming shaking off the tough hit earlier and here he makes the catch real good action said Fleming's the right wide receiver all the action went to the left left him one-on-one with Shane Walton it was a big cushy miss Waltons thinkin hey were up twenty eight to ten don't give him a touchdown quick release by Thiessen little shortstop Phillies they gave him former progress about a yard short of the first down an air force will go for they've been very good on fourth option and he'll have it if that midline option fake to the floor assembly an option because it's almost like a quarterback keep same kind of play that 1996 they ran very very successfully fake to the full-back here and in the quarterback keep yeah Morgan ran that successfully for Air Force and they're upset of Notre Dame in 96 and Thiessen keeps for a first down [Applause] play action fake wide open as a title Jessica was a catch he's got it touchdown Air Force Joseph [Music] tight end adjust to the ball like Chris Jessup did right there the reading said no picture to go for to be zoom down for Leviathan that Brett they don't wear out they're ready to go right now they're gonna kick it [Music] but it said by Chris Jessa Adams for the point after they'll kick it as they've narrowed the Notre Dame lead [Music] snap in the kit and the point after is good well Chuck Peterson the offensive coordinator said hey Chris Jessup it's the best receiving tight end we may have ever had at Air Force you gotta see what here he is the ball thrown away over shorter adjusted you know Willie Mays for the touchdown [Music] now 2817 a little togetherness on the sidelines the Leprechaun with the cadets and here's the touch yet Jessup has only five catches all season but now two four scores he's a tight end number 87 again and you're running the ball run what pretty well bites there and then the adjustment I think the amazing thing was he just because he was wide open you know and you still wonder a little bit about them not going for the two-point play to make it a 10-point game here they elected to go for one but nonetheless terrific Drive and a great catch by Chris Jessup a nine play Drive and Jessup with the 30 yard reception and so it's 28 17 with 1110 left in the game okay one thing Air Force has to figure out how to do is slow down this return team of Notre Dame here there's the blocker there's the receiver jeez Jones averaging 39 yards or return Thompson six [Applause] this time Air Force swarms unable to twenty securing life Jamie Arthur special teams tackle coming up on NBC NBC's November II then start with SNL's prime time presidential bash and legal weapon for and Titanic and you've got a huge November on NBC hard to believe that November looms as October about to play out in the last October game here at Notre Dame Stadium finds the Irish up 2817 Levesque yields hit 8 of 19 but three touchdown passes today big win for the freshman here's Terrence Howard so his first carry of the day as the Irish get their fresh running back into the game they've got three quality running backs those touchdowns you just talking about Tama batma Vecchio I mean really laying it out getting Joey gether all a chance and then David Gibbons fun returns Howard got four yards on that first down carry the Vecchio first man covered and then decides to throw it away again poised with a fresh man knowing the situation teams up 28 17 you know don't force things throw it away is just as you were saying with an earlier time we talked with yesterday and he was really disappointed in himself really nothing was a navy game he felt like he forced the ball a little too much then he said that last week against West Virginia he made some mistakes and they just shook them off and said you know you have to go on dwelling on them and perhaps making another because you were still thinking of your previous mistake that's a sign of maturity is you definitely improving [Applause] brother shotgun on third down lays it up for Hunter we can't get there incomplete and low today we'll have to putt their forces offense did it last series their defense did it here you think of air forces having to grind it out to score but they are able to score in 9 plays on their last possession and they're not out of it yet absolutely not and they have Corey Nelson number 42 in there he's right there this is a guy that blocked six kicks in his career he'll Bouldin punt formation okay deep for air force snap he'll ball picks it up michaei has to backpedal again the special team performers of the Irish who take him down at the 30 and who else would you expect to be down there the number 25 Tony Driver happened in the all-american season Tom Hammond Pat 8 and Jim Gray at Notre Dame Stadium for for 10 minutes left Notre Dame trailing air force at halftime 10 to 7 scored 21 straight points in the third quarter to take the lead but Air Force on its last possession scoring a touchdown to make it 28 17 and mike season in the Falcons now with the ball at their own 31 yard line facing a first down and hoping to get more points here to get back in it 11 point ballgame fit unique still need two scores to take them in either order the furnace go to touch a novice of you think field goal to the camp [Applause] they sit on the option pitch Hawkins would not give up the balls dad there was no fumble Williams was blocked on the ground and still made the jaw and that's the kind of effort you know great bass in the stalking he's a defensive coordinator of Notre Dame was talking to this week he said you know we've got a lot of guys giving it a lot of effort you see it here from rocket Rock Williams number one you there he's down missed the tackle gets right back up gets a second chance you got guys like Lance LaBrie running sideline the sideline BJ Scott we talked about him that time with Brock Lance second and 13 decent straight drop back checks from the pocket we're down the sidewalk 40 and ducks out of bounds big one a clipping family on grunting I think he got in front of the Notre Dame defender it's a 12 yard scramble for Thiessen who picked up the first down and Davey is hot wide receiver at a block in the back I think he got in front of the gun [Music] so a scrambling play by the quarterback Mike Thiessen here it is on the right side say the screen they're hitting behind they you got to get the head in front it looked like his head was behind him quick drop abuse and fires to flooding Pass caught right at the first down sticks Beckstrom all over Fleming well you know but he's able to hang on despite the hit he's really he's an 18-year hand for a guy with six 60s I look at those guys make that you know the high ball catches he's a good low ball catcher to burst out airforce nine minutes remaining the fourth quarter you need to scores can't spend too much time in Harlem Fleming on the sidelines replaced by lovasco [Applause] they said again what bro the kids just out of the fingertips I'm Isaiah Fran good matchups in the deep ball game having a lot of one-on-one coverage at both sides the ball home Isaiah number 80 has bextrum by a step so it'll be second and 10 from the Irish 47th Eason has completed 12 of 20 440 yards and two touchdowns as you see some other scores in college football this afternoon [Applause] Thiessen has a manual then the coaches made stumbling for the first down as well Mario Brown when they pushed out reception to the Irish 35 yard line lateral wing-backs forever pretty good receivers to talk about it's kind of one-on-one guy they pitch the ball tool but Boyle Brown that time lined up in a in a slot ran little out pattern well-thrown ball again by theis decent passing almost every time now woopsy together Fleming did he get under it no incomplete pass SAP and dykes defending Backstrom he was open on that curl round you know he's he's run some deep breaths this one is just a little stop and hook now that that ball is definitely on the turf good call quite get down to get his hands under it there's those real high socks we were talking to him yesterday about everything everything at the air force everybody does the same thing you know you expect that the over to rule hi sake says makes me feel a lot the faster he's been a handful for the Notre Dame defenders five catches today he's up looking again for loving who was interfering with no flag but he caught it anyway and has twisted down at the 25 yard line by Shane Walton you know really great adjustments saw it earlier about a tight end Jessup this time by fun as he straightened out his body you know he talked about playing basketball a rebounder he just kind of screams out the defender and makes himself a target so now six catches 75 yards for Fleming a week ago he caught ten for over a hundred yards [Applause] force continues to drive first at the 24 option pitching him written out of bounds around the 20 yard line by Williams and Beckstrom ssin offense you see what Air Force has done even five in the middle that most of those been kind of quarterback keeps the full-backs when I carried three Baldwin octave on the outside the passing game I think that fourth off left right middle for the four blocks has been their passing game where they've been really effective second down this is the quarterback of a fullback Becker that's the first option and Becker keeping it he gets his first carry makes it down into the 15 so the former concession worker here at Notre Dame Stadium Scott Becker from brain to Indiana with his first carry and about a yard short of the first down what was he excited about playing in the stadium you know he dreamed a plane for Notre Dame growing up not far from here for you tires fan of those games he saw was Penn State where I saw Jerome Bettis get two touchdown pass they're down less than a yard Thiessen's gonna pass he throws well you know well covered by DOE today yeah absolutely then now it's decision time for Fisher did very I think on a 31 situation when you need to to scores you go for the first down there but now he's gonna figure you sooner or later I'm gonna have to kick the field goal now my attending he's going for now made decision to go for it on fourth down so forth that looks like it's a little less than a yard a crucial play coming up for the Air Force thank you as if the Irish 15 hook them they said the pepper and gun Becker for the former the former concession stand worker at Notre Dame Stadium picks up a crucial yard for the first down the same endzone we used to sell hotdogs he was down this end zone he did it now two carries by the full-back in this series was only three the whole entire game before this series first down from the 13 powers to the 5-yard line Rome SAP and Glenn ro I'm always glad you know the the only candies don't there's such determined bunch no matter what's the word they're gonna give you apps they're in panic all the effort they have if they score they'll need to go for a two-point play second down [Applause] [Applause] [Music] running back watch it as he may be already broke the plane but the ball comes out there yeah yeah I think he was a chronic dead matter recovered by Giovannetti but I thought he broke the plane with it before it came free and now they need to go for a two-point play here right and again they've been so successful over the years you know you know he's Bob babies won't look into that midline option right no you fake to the full-back as a quarterback kind of ducks off tape [Applause] two-point conversion decent pitches [Applause] No McCain just able to get the ball across the endzone the two-point conversion table one and then McKay gets it look what he's gonna get stopped by two yards short and he stretches his 5/8 frame out 510 to get he got it he just barely got the ball of us playing of the goal line amazing drive by Air Force two determined plays that put air force within three Scott Becker crosses the plane really before this ball comes out with one of his teammates recovers you talking about the determined runs like he's selling hot dogs do you're gonna go down that same endzone that's the touchdown but just as critical what's the two-point play and watch Scott indicate we even reach out and just get that ball over the plate of the end zone and that's the two-point play to make it a three-point game so two critical plays there and Fisher to bury is a happiest guy in the house now you know you can't even exhale though let's kick it off to Notre Dame Dave Adams will kick this one off he and Thompson have he squealed it kicked off and he did a squib the first day all the time he kicked him he gets what they're gonna try to do driver and John does get away [Music] this time it's driver turn [Applause] just across the 54 mama Kensing after I've never seen a team do it consistently you know you see once the yuc good kickoff returns by team but I've never seen a team do it this way but this off they're going this way this time Julius Jones throws the key block Europe number 23 out in front there's a key block there by Europe Murray number 14 doing his part so you know a lot of room in those running lines what a weapon special teams can be stopped at the line of scrimmage by Matt Palmer you know they have been phenomenal especially if not just the return game you know they've blocked kicks this year good coverage as well they've you know haven't given up a lot of big plays in the coverage part of the game Tony driver has always a star free safety does a great job on punt coverage there he hit nice return driver the former running back and again they alternate offenses of these two teams fourth quarters so far as belong to Air Force [Applause] and stopped after a gain of three again by Matt Palmer big down here for air forms down by three five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter this is where your defense needs a stop it's also where they've really kind of sold out and blitzed last time la Vecchia burned them with a long pass third down and seven Notre Dame clinging to a 2825 lead pocket 442 and County [Applause] la Vecchia fakes the hand off rolls to his right he's going to keep it tries to make the side the corner and stopped short of the first down by locked in the safety really good defense by air force when they needed it this fourth quarter another really key play it's gonna be for three but probably one maybe one and a half yep see where they spot a fourth down in three yards to go and Notre Dame gets Hill ball on to punt now what he'll Bowl wants to do is is not punt this ball in the end zone it'll force a fair catch around the 10 Yona or punt the ball out of bounds but it's an error if you put this ball into the end zone Scotty McKay stands at his 10 he'll Bowl tries to hang it up stop let's how short of the goal their time gonna do it all phases a special team don't it times sure dude 37 yard punt but more importantly it backs air force' deep in their own territory they'll spotted and about the five yard line you know in Terrence Howard the star of last week's game as a Russian doesn't pout this week didn't get a chance to run the ball much and he carried it maybe once but on special teams he makes it a big big play so air force 95 yards away from a touchdown they would need a field goal to tie the last time the two teams played it was over time here at when a name shows blitz it drives nearly to the 52 yards he caught it the one hand it was like you know it was flypaper on his hands the left hand the bait left him is a well-thrown ball again by Thiessen and in those strong hands it looked like machine one could have knocked it out of his hands but the real strong big hands of Ryan Flynn he keeps the possession sadden catches a hundred 17 yards here's a first down option throw Wow tripped up at the 50 yard line by Brock Williams where we talked about the most games the Academy seem to play 96 98 99 3 different academies right now Notre Dame's good all they can handle with air force a very determined air force team and despite the fact they run what most people would say is a triple option or option attack they've thrown the ball so effectively they've been able to come from behind Dave Adams the field goal kicker on the airforce sideline they trail by three box shows 3:19 they're thinking touchdown this stop is a sale for the field another thing a touchdown to win it Thiessen cross the river line to the 36-yard line and a late flag comes down walton made the tackle that was the same play that Liotta's palmer scored on in the first half of crossing route by the wing back and he said facemask but number one personal foul against Notre Dame let you put them in at least field goal range dead ball personal foul on the defense 15 yards I think the I saw the lips when the referees in number 1 brought Williams the facemask to see if he crunched his his head while he was already down the play it ended negating the 15-yard vault variety on Hammond I think was the a personal foul not amazement it was for the twisting of the head accidents defensive play by Brock Williams for and may the tackle for a loss Scotty McKay number 30 and Brock Williams have been locked out there and in blocking bets now Broadway which is a quarter and he's just fightin off the blocks of Scotty McKay is ordinarily a pretty good blocker but I'd say one thing if I were here force I'd be going the other side it's right down here one second down 13 from the 24 [Applause] Thiessen retreats to pass throws it no good in the complete Dory's has dropped his crops laner Oh was defending Brown let's see the ball is what on the 23 yard line is 24 yard they almost had it so it makes it if they don't get this here it's a 42-yard field goal attempt so I think down by 3 Mike decent Sirte first ball can't get sack you know the leader says don't get sack know the situation of the game don't want to take yourself and a field goal range two minutes 14 seconds draw play and twisted down at the 18-yard line Brock Williams you know good call by Chuck Peterson the offensive coordinator realize the situation of the game you're on the road down by three picked up what six seven yards there they're gonna have to kick the field goal but still with a field goal to tie the ballgame and Notre Dame calls a timeout two minutes and one second as Notre Dame calls timeout and number 11 is Dallas Thompson he's the air force punter he is the man that in 1996 kicked a 22 yard field goal apparently to win the game in overtime [Applause] so he had to do it again five yards further back and a 27 yard field goal Dallas Thompson water in overtime facing the same goal posts Thompson now will watch his teammate Dave Adams kick what would be a tying field goal well you just hope the Steve's with this routine because it's worked for him thus far you talking about Dave add up the usual team but that a good season long a 45 on the year nine of 13 on this season the timeout does two things for Notre Dame it saves them some time in case the game is tied to try to come back and win it and it also ices the kicker Dave Adams now spotted at 425 it'll be a 35-yard attempt pick this up and the kick is good officially a 34 yard field goal and Dave Adams has tied the game what's the best juice they got to kick off the doji the good news is they're done well it looked like Notre Dame was gonna run away with the game after scoring 21 unanswered points in the third quarter and this 34 yard field goal has made it a tie game with a minute 56 left there is something about the quality of the men that play at the academies including the Air Force of course the character they have I mean they have so much pride and decent to his engineered the fourth-quarter comeback celebrates a tying field goal baby can only watch in dismay and now try to regather his troops already Notre Dame has played an overtime game losing to top-ranked Nebraska I have to believe they should skip this one I'm just I'm surprised they continued to kick the ball deep yourse adam says out of the crowds to kick it through but as you said the bad news is you've got to kick off to Notre Dame and the Irish have averaged nearly 36 yards in return today little shorts quit because you know some two minutes left the ball game I put down there 30 40 50 yards with a little topspin on yeah taking a deep has it worked very well let's see what they do it's Adams to kick it kicks it away and he kicks it into the endzone by Jones will come out with it cravings tangled at the 21-yard line earlier covered a fumble 21-yard returned by Jones with a minute 51 on the clock in the freshman Matco Vecchio at quarterback for the Irish amantha Vecchio has played beautifully today but this is a new situation for him really less than two minutes left in the ball game score is tied at 28 we have two timeouts and what he's really done thus far is made no decision he's not forced the ball they're not behind don't take too many chances but boys got some pretty good in dynamic wide receivers Novak ale in the shotgun ball spotted at his own 21 yard line that place topped the illegal procedure will cost the Irish five yards we only have six penalties Air Force only has three start so now the ball spotted back at the 15-yard line just across the 15 black a little anxious sometimes you do that in these two-minute drills [Music] [Applause] well thank you [Applause] [Music] he's had the game of a lifetime today the senior from Boulder has been aboard a Notre Dame sight throughout the contest around the coverage sack although the quick feet of Matt Palmer gets him there again that ball looked like he might have been out as Levesque Yale was on the way down [Applause] now that the elevator of the safety just manages to get pass caught by hunter and he has stopped at the 24 yard line listen this is we gonna fun I'm punching both of these guys is color X frame around big plane but again lo Vecchio the only he may be 18 years old but but he knows exactly what's going on he senses he feels he knows he's in man zone in the head gap who's gonna throw the ball to his own right tackle for a second thinner he was looking to throw it to nobody at that time because he was able to scramble out of the end zone they both have two timeouts remaining big big play the game here now most of this game on this down Richard belt defensive coordinator has elected to blitz either one or two linebackers plus a strong shake back off but because they've been burned quite a bit in the passing game in the second half there's Richard Bell the defensive coordinator called a good game you know the one-handed stab by Fleming the great catch by Jessup the tight end we saw the gather yea gather all's catch yeah you know put the volleyball touchdown catch by G even Hunter tipped by David given to see limited area yeah what's your head Falcon has to he's knowing about their gums get stuck in his throat they opened a little Irish something 102 on the clock third and six for Notre Dame at the Irish 25-yard line 28 28 the score Oh Becky on third down shotgun incomplete Tony Fisher the intended receiver pass broken up by listening now from Air Force she's gonna get the bolt back in recently good field position with two timeouts remains a 58 seconds of it they still have two timeouts and this is an Air Force option team that can throw the ball a productive passing game after a very slow start I think Leeson went about five attempts before completing his first pass Hill ball will punt [Applause] Scotty McKay there's a feed on it and snowballs in fall Center at the 36 yard line Howard might have gotten a piece of it only a three yard return of a 44 yard month you urine den is one of those little things Terrence Howard number 32 save what could have been a big punt return by air force turns our dad carried the ball 400 yards Eli at that today but that was a significant play by Terrence Allen Adams staying ready just in case from their own 36 Thiessen he's going to lay it up for me [Applause] stoppable just phenomenal Tom just absolutely phenomenal [Applause] [Music] and successful you know they know they're gonna throw the ball to Ryan Flemmi and you just can't stop them now they're in field goal range right now right they can win the ballgame 41 seconds remaining I think it's important that Thiessen get the ball in the middle of the field to give us a few go pick a good chance they have two timeouts they say look Becker that's the plan right in the middle of the field now then the tackles it meanwhile Ryan Fleming Pat eight catches a hundred 63 yards straight game he has been over a hundred yards and receptions as Thiessen and Fleming put the air back in Air Force 19 seconds remaining the ball they have two timeouts she should one-one play properly attempt the field goal see the clock ticking down under ten seconds Becker to the ten timeout Air Force three seconds with three seconds on the clock same endzone as 96 what Air Force kicked a field goal that time in overtime to beat Notre Dame I'm sending the 9th ranked Irish now the 19th ranked Irish find themselves in the same situation with Dave Adams to attempt a game-winning field goal the only thing I would say here with three seconds throw down I would have saved myself a little bit more time maybe six or seven seconds just to catch at a bobble and snap on third down right do it on fourth down well I wonder if Dallas Thompson has had any words for Adams he can relate there's Lisa yeah okay and it's gonna be flying jets about a year I'm a baseball I know it's going more fun flying jets or it'll be hard to top this can kick a winning field goal air force once again bidding to shock Notre Dame the fans here at Notre Dame Stadium in disbelief look at the unity on the sidelines fishery to very right in the middle Gallagher the snapper pounds the holder and a timeout to ice the kicker from Bob baby now these are guys that fighting wars that fly jets and all those gonna make you really ice guys like this [Music] Adams the junior from Fort Lauderdale Florida goes back over the sideline the field goal attempt will be 28 yards one yard longer than the game-winner in 96 [Music] well they say lightning never strikes twice in the same spot now look at their helmets [Music] lady bolts on both sides [Music] Gallagher stamps bounds loads Dave Adams gifts from 28 yards for the game order special teams again the field goal I'm old blender oblak two putts this year and now the field goal attempt he's number 19 right here in the pink that he yep that was he right hand on it when Iran when Errol was a high school star running back used to return kicks but never block kicks until he came to Notre Dame his third block of the year none more importantly Thiessen reacting to the blocked field goal but now we're headed to overtime just as in 96 [Music] unbelievable game refresh your memory of the rules Notre Dame knows them well they lost to Nebraska here in overtime earlier this season [Applause] fifteen men get the ball here's the coin toss [Applause] his lease details there's the slip in his head you've won the toss you're choosing to go on defense okay you're going on office which hand you wished in fit you want to go that way we're just right the way we are correct okay white is going to go in this direction okay good luck to you guys Air Force chooses to go in the same direction which they won in overtime in 96 back for overtime after this from your local station [Music] air force at Notre Dame headed into overtime after a wild finish to regulation air force scoring 18 points in the fourth quarter this was the Adams field goal that tied the game then after the air force defense held Notre Dame CSUN would get the ball back and hit Fleming to put them in range to perhaps win it with another Adams field goal Adams lining up from 28 yards set it on its way but Glenn Earl with a block and Pisa knows he'll have to go out on the field for overtime we're tied at 28 just looking at Mike Thiessen's face right here I mean Amy you realize hey shake that off what a dramatic contrast in overtime records Air Force 3 and OH three basin begins at the 25 waiting to reset on the sidelines to get it ready as a quarterback to situati is hate waiting at the line of scrimmage with your Hollow eighty-thousand coming along watson play becker plows to the 20-yard line stop by Legree it'll be second down plants Legree number 94 today big season one of those hustle guys say this guy has made more plays on the sidelines that you could imagine for a defensive tackle Becker's carried seven times for 21 yards and a touchdown all on the second hand changing the play now they said again gives it to Becker and he gets about four yards this time before Harrison gets into the turn there's been the workhorse early absolutely not another really big down its third and about one and I always think the end of guy running like that who's nothing for Scott Becker this game means everything you know he's a senior not to give another chance down they are vector the lone setback behind Thiessen just caught by the shoe tops at about the 7 yard line by rocky boy rocky boy I'm insane touchdown and you never know when that play even though it's a first down you kind of depressed about that but rocky boy Minh just did a great job of hustling and then just hanging on number 30 right here just gets by the otherwise Thiessen gets into the end zone and forces Notre Dame to respond with the touchdown to keep the game alive so the Air Force does pick up the first down so first and goal from the seven hit all the time in the option and again [Applause] wasn't real quick penetration by Notre Dame and that option play you know Thiessen doesn't really know whether he's gonna give the ball the full bank or not until the very last moment sort of rioting first step absolutely and air force able to recover the football bailed me second down Irish luck Bob Davie would appreciate on this Halloween weekend as the the air force goblins came to haunt again at Notre Dame Stadium [Applause] lost a yard on that way so it's sucking in door from the [Applause] comes from motivating decent [Applause] intercepted not quite driver tipped it in the air and try the color could be Prime hold on but it'll be third down there have been so many guys in this game Tom will played well and Tony drivers one up I mean both teams have hats really good what don't drive her primarily in the run game it's really kind of stuff some option player they're just kind of almost picking it off he's played well in special teams Brian Flemming into the game he's been the money receiver he's wide to the bottom of the screen double him he they're down here Faison ran the option it was Anthony didn't he just stopped him and stopped in his tracks by deadline so it's fourth down never got started one more time Anthony then that makes a big fly and here comes the end of field goal attempt to put him up by three these had never had a chance to even make his reads he was collapsed by deadlift in the eighth Lee so the field goal attempt Dave Adams here's the man developer Westland winner not a 26-yard attempt and it's good so Air Force cores 3 on its first possession in overtime and now donor day will start in the 25 and can win it with a touchdown [Music] the atoms get the airforce fans wish there was one at the end of the game [Music] it's such an advantage in this overtime situation Tom knowing what you have to do to win the ballgame that's why even though Notre Dame won the toss they elected you know to defer go on deeper no you don't have what you have exactly exactly beat Adams successfully kicking it through and now young Matt Vecchio directs the Notre Dame offense from the air force 25 [Music] they put the ball at the left hash where they start with an offset I Makia fakes the handoff to jail [Applause] the officials were looking at one another they didn't rush the call or give him credit for that they did not rush this call one judge one back judge was thinking about raising his hands up but he looked into the eyes of the other judge here's the back judge [Applause] [Music] there's the catch that's touch you think he came down to the line possession his knees down as neither did his knee go down first well he made the ball may have come down right on the back line one more look and certainly his position possession there the essence of man in any event it's second and ten [Applause] and police had made the touchdown saving tackle first entered a boy Minh did it before for the the Irish in Gleason does it for the Falcons but gives him the first on the 13 yard line Jones over 100 yards rushing today 113 yards on 26 carries now the ball at the 13 first down Notre Dame [Applause] this time air force came with a blitz and they stopped Jones before he could make the line of scrimmage pine rod was all over him second down after a loss of two on that play at second and 12 lakeil from the shotgun [Applause] and twists his way to the 9 yard line got him down for good Boise naughty number 54 for air force saw that with quickly I thought he was going to tangle Julius Jones for a loss a few instances able to dodge him and make a nice little game what should have been a loss good read by Zanotti ball just inside the 10 it's third down and six exceda the kicker for though today would be called on with this third down try does not succeed and timeout one timeout for overtime timeout call by noted a lo Vecchio to the sidelines for consultation earn over time air force kicking a field goal in its first possession trying to at least answer and hoping for the winning score they face the third ensues 9 yard line from the nine yard line Tom this is situation that over the years Kevin Rogers both at Syracuse and at Notre Dame has run a play the big ball why high and if they've run successfully over the years they just a lot of it's gonna be a wait wait wait one tight end kind of runs across around one delays and they've found some tight ends wide open over the years Nick said about the pressure field goals kick a 38 yard game-winning field goal against Purdue feel about having my kicker wear number 14 well said it didn't bother him he's the very gregarious young challenged invited to say that was bad luck almost remember he told us his mother when he was playing youth soccer he had a number 30 his mother made him change but his nothing she thought was unlike the IRAs hope it doesn't come down to that they'd like to get a winning touchdown [Applause] [Music] third and six high formation Murray and Fischer in the the backyard he's a god [Applause] [Applause] the two coaches combatants only a few moments ago now the hubs and congratulations on a college football game to savor [Applause] [Music] Kevin Rogers terrific execution fakeblock's by Jim Jones number 55 Jim Fame the center and then a once warm determined run by 5-7 170 pound Joey gather all gather all finishes the game with a hundred sixteen receiving yards 22 rushing yards three touchdowns including vets game-winner touchdown pups says he's got his head set off and celebrating before gather all crossed the goal line Joey gather all Perry's it diving across for the winning score
