good evening Irish fans and welcome to the Steve Daines Notre Dame football Saturday night watch party tonight we take a look back at the 2000 matchup between Notre Dame and Purdue the 13th ranked Boilermakers were led by Heisman Trophy candidate senior quarterback Drew Brees the Irish were ranked 21st and coming off a heartbreaking 27 24 overtime home loss the week before - number one ranked Nebraska the Irish were also with us starting quarterback Arnez battle for this game battle had suffered a broken bone in his left wrist in the Nebraska game tight end and a high school quarterback Gary Godsey got the start for Notre Dame his first collegiate start at quarterback one of many fascinating storylines in this game the first time starter against the Heisman Trophy winner was one of those storylines but even more important was the matchup of the Notre Dame defense against Drew Brees and in the Purdue basketball on grass offense our guest today is one of the heroes of that game unanimous first-team all-american and starting quarterback Shane Walton Shane thank you for joining us awesome it's my pleasure thanks for having me I've been watching them man and I'm enjoying the podcast though it's a blast now Shane you have one of the more fascinating stories in Notre Dame football history and that says a lot you came to Notre Dame on a soccer scholarship you were really good you're at second team all beat stop all Big East honors after leading the soccer team and scoring as a freshman with 10 goals and then you decided you wanted to play football and you had to make a choice because they're both played in the fall for some of the younger folks out there that are not familiar with your story tell us why you made that decision you know I just remember practicing on the soccer field my freshman year and I could hear the football team on the field next to us and I just remember my head and my heart wanting to be on that side of the field and it wasn't really in soccer anymore and so that's when I was I knew that I needed to do something different I love soccer I still play with my buddies I grew up with but at the time it was my heart and head was was in the football did you think every athlete has to be confident but you think you had unanimous first-team all-american skills no not at all I knew I thought I could come in and compete I knew it would take a while I had to transition my body you know I was probably about 165 170 playing soccer and so I knew I had to transform my body put some muscle own get a little bit more quick bursts but as I said before it's you know soccer made me a better football player and football many better soccer player so I think playing Montez sports really really helped seeing a lot of different out now mm is your first season with the team so this is your third game one thing that never changes here to here at Notre Dame is as a team you will always go into the season with the goal winning the national championship and you proved that you had that kind of skill the week before losing that heartbreaker in overtime to the top-ranked team in the country Nebraska so talk to me a little bit about what you remember of the mood of the team on campus as you headed into Game three against a highly ranked Purdue team with one of the marquee players in the country you know that's Notre Dame you play the best week in and week out and that's why you come because you want to do that you have to remember back then Nebraska was like a Wing T offense and they were the number one team in the nation and then Purdue offense couldn't be any different what we played against the week before against Nebraska and I don't know think people give enough credit to our defensive staff to make that transition to play against a Wing T team and then a five wide team the next week and we were able to put all the stuff in and go execute and you know I we obviously won the Purdue game but I think we did well enough on defense to win the Nebraska game as well there's no question that you did let's talk about that stuff that you put in because briefs had faced a lot of zone defense in the first two games he played just tore it up I think the biggest headline from this game was if you're facing a Purdue team that has been averaging 45 passes a game and you forced Purdue to throw it just 24 times and run it 43 times and only 22 of those passes where by Brees the other two were trick plays how are you able to take them completely out of their game you know defense what you do is defense great at my high school now and the first thing I do is I looked to see what does the opposing offense like to do and I look at that and I said you know what they're not gonna do that and we looked at this coach Davey and the staff looked at this and say hey Bill I had to throw the ball drew Reese's this is his campaign to win the Heisman he wants to do on a national stage against Notre Dame he's not going Iseman against us and so our game plan was to come in we wanted knock bums but he's a great player but you know you start thinking twice about throwing the ball and 45 times to be knocking at that great parents blood every single play and so that was the game plan we're coming after him you if you look at our defensive game plan there was a lot of plays where we had 11 11 men within three yards of line scrimmage and from that we would all out blitz or we would drop in to cover three and so you know you knock like I said you're not drew Brees on the but a couple of times quarterback things are the coordinator things a little bit differently about calling those five wide throwing place now heading into the game as big a matchup as the defense against Brees was a lot of the attention if not most of it was understandably paid paid to the fact that you had lost Arnez battle and that year Notre Dame had an offense that heavily relied on option football of the for potential backups Gary Godsey was the one guy at six seven I think to 40 to 50 that you wouldn't choose to run the option but the other three players were all freshmen and you had spent so much time getting our nez ready the coaching staff had because he was himself a rookie quarterback and no one else had taken a lot of snaps so everybody was wondering and the storyline of course was tight end playing quarter back Perdue actually recruited Gary Godsey at the quarterback position noted but he wanted it comes under name so badly came as a tight end so he had some experience but that was still the story as a defense did you guys feel you had to do everything possible to make it so that Godsey didn't have to win the game by himself you know that's the mentality of any defender I know that's not worth anything is that I don't care what the hell fits does our job is to stop these guys not let him get in the endzone that's what we're gonna do and so I don't care who the quarterback is that's our mentality okay we're gonna shut you down we're gonna try to knock you out and you're gonna fit you're gonna fill us because we're coming to get you and now that was I meant an Audi and again I don't care who our quarterback is who we have on offense I don't care about of nine players we believed on defense that we were gonna stop you and do enough to win the game folks you're gonna enjoy watching this game lots of big plays by the defense and a first-time quarterback who made the plays when he had to make them so you did tell us that you liked our new format last week that was based in part on some suggestions that you the fans sent us so we're gonna do that again this week we're gonna stream the entire game with the announcers and Shane and I will jump in from time to time with analysis we will do that just like we did last week we think you'll enjoy and we'll be rejoining you very quickly just a few moments as there were a bunch of big plays early in this game for the Irish so as they used to say we're now streaming it but roll the videotape back in South Bend Indiana the Boilermakers and the Fighting Irish getting set for their third game of the season it's a beautiful football day 57 degrees low humidity a very slight wind partly cloudy and what a difference about some 40 50 degrees from only two weeks ago here in South Bend Indiana we're on the field and felt like about a hundred and fifteen if you're a passer like Drew Brees is you are excited when you wake up and see a day like this it just feels like a football day here in South Pamela's about 80 degrees a week ago of course the Irish battling the injuries you've got a quick look volumes and they're of courses Arnez battle who last week and nobody knew it until the next day wrote the bone in his left wrist he's probably out for the season broke it on the very first play had surgery this week we've got a cast up for probably another month it will probably sit out the entire year what kind of effect Pat you lose a quarterback they had the whole thing designed from the option they worked for two years getting him ready for this moment and now you lose him and you got a young quarterback to lead your way well you know the thing about you think about Notre Dame really being an option team they really aren't although battle is their leading rusher most of those yards came on those impromptu plays you know scrambles quarterback draws that's what you have to replace with Gary gutsy not so much the the option plays now with Gary got c67 as we mentioned I think what Notre Dame will try to do in replacing those quarterback plays is used green passes a lot more than we've seen in the past Notre Dame gallery God's is going to have to wait a little longer to get his first snap Notre Dame the third option until the second half they didn't win the toss so the Irish will kick off and we'll sue the bit got C in the second series of the game Nazis dad is here his brother is the quarterback at Georgia Tech and he is playing home against Navy today so his mother will be at that King my good good two good return teams in both Purdue and Notre Dame Matt McNew will handle the kickoffs in his collegiate debut really yeah really key for these kickers to keep it they kick a deep out of the engine if possible to avoid that guys return it man he's fast Vinny Sutherland under a 4 for 40 will return one away in South Bend Southerland at the 10 for the 20 he's knocked out near the 25 yard line good coverage by the special teams but they're starting it off up front some big guys that this is where the experience is like Laskowski of Kobe 3:10 Center aliment gone by backs and receivers their basic set one back centric Brown behind the - oh cool breeze three wideouts Winston Morales and the speedy sub 1 Tim Spratt that's a very good tight end there is 89 next to Drew Brees a 6-1 senior out of Austin Texas was not heavily recruited surprisingly actually look at his career you think everybody would have been after good student School of Management at 3.40 PA in a very good student pat of the game of football Miller going to eat 4.0 and last semester but yet very very smart guy does not make a lot of mistakes it's changing the football coordinates boost intent on a 25-yard line typical game trees sea breeze will throw up in the air about 45 times rolling his breeze surprise surprise he close at 20 driver was Oliver Stratton that an incompletion good play by driver when a couple of kooks offense briefs in a meeting a couple of years back the dominating defense will change a buck Weaver BJ Scott netting his sentence based on Roberts is the key guy there in for grant tires on right end a linebacker sold for us a political appointment Harrison Denman before defensive backs hisses the basic shot although will she allowed nickel and diming we have the nickel package here for Notre Dame second and 10 and up up the banner and stop quickly is said the crowd came about three of the place wind up at third and seventh Notre Dame today is going to run a nickel defense primarily and sometimes a dime but you see 1 2 3 4 5 here and again a lot of may inform and coverage you want to run those crossing routes versus man-to-man coverage but it will see 5 you'll see 6 now ordinarily you know if 37 is an uncomfortable down for a lot of teams that produced he is very comfortable and third on each dime package six TVs for over game on Thor today [Applause] brings in the shotgun [Applause] Nik Sutherlands hands tasting Beckster one of the extra duties onto the fence and notre dame picking up where they left off a week ago as Purdue will have to punch Anthony Weaver did a good job but getting Andrew brave breezes takes man-to-man coverage you're gonna see that most of today good Jam at the line of scrimmage there again last week Kent State Rams own primarily against degrees he ate it up said Notre Dame is gonna play man for man most of today Joe Carroll is back deep that long 83-yard poverty with one of the sensational words of the year what does that Travis okay Shane it's hard to overestimate the importance of this blocked punt so take us through the Glen Errol block you know we've put a lot of hours into special teams I think the week before we returned a punt and a kick against Nebraska and so this is a phase of the game there's three phases and this is just as important as the other two and so we put a lot of time into working on blocking pumps blocking kicks scheming it and so it's a huge play anytime that I think there's the percentage and NFL if you block a punt you have a 85 or 90 percent chance of winning that game and it what it just does for the mentality what it does for the momentum is just incredible especially like I said with a guy quarterback in his first start and that's the huge point there that's the first drive of the game for Purdue and you said the mentality is always to make sure that the offense doesn't have to win it by themselves but what a great thing that was because we're gonna stay with you here as we go through this first possession as you look at a really a pretty talented offensive line but it took a while even though Notre Dame starts the drive at the five yard line took a while to get in the end zone yeah I remember you know they're still working out the kinks right you got a brand new quarterback you're running a new system you know our nest with our Nezzer to helm we ran a completely different and system so what we practiced all spring what the orphans practiced all summer and all year to this point now they come in and do something different so it's gonna take a little bit any time you have to have to run a new system now clearly God she was just getting adjusted to starting a game in front of 80,000 fans at quarterback and they struggled a bit on the stride that actually started at the fore and in fact there's about to be a delay of game penalty here and that goes right to the fact that it's new quarterback new offensive plays to a certain degree but gachi ends up coming up with a huge play right after this that gets you into the end zone and that too was critical to set the tone because I'm not sure there's many things that are more demoralizing to give the offense the ball on the 4 yard line and have to come away with just three points yeah definitely I mean this this the feeling of being out there and um I'll tell you one thing Gazi is a talented talented quarterback the best thing about him was he was so cool nothing was too big for him the moment was never too big for him and he was extremely capable I think about him and today's systems with the rpoS and all that right gosse's a good quarterback he's a really good quarterback but I think his best that I said was just how cool and poised he was and he was supposed to throw the ball here but he saw that hole open and he knew what to do with it yeah definitely I mean he's supposed to throw that but he saw some green grass and he just took it we know for a guy six seven 240 he he moves pretty well so I I was proud of him getting getting in the end zone there and in the first quarter and that had to feel good for him that's his dad his dad played at Alabama so that that in itself is a breaking news in Alabama guy we're a Notre Dame gear but certainly the size of Godsey as we're about to see on the replay really came into effect here because he should have been stopped but he kind of shed the tackler like he was you know a small insect it didn't even slow him down yeah I mean he's a he's a big dude I see all that green grass up there you take that he's a big strong guy he's nimble Jack let ik and he comes from a family that's that's really a extremely athletic at the time his brother I think George was a head of started at Purdue so he was throwing all the our excuse me Georgia Tech on the ball all over the place and so comes from extremely athletic family and again you know the moment was never too big for him so the Irish are on the board here and we are gonna join you again very soon Shana's chest shown a kind of what he's doing now he's coaching football as an assistant he's the head soccer coach at the school he works that out there in San Diego but the next play Shane will be able to talk about Shane and we're looking forward to that let's go back to the lie bracket it's a short Bunch southern at the 15 he can fly up to the 50 well played Zeroni Sapp we know the dance let's go back and look and see what Gary Godsey saw as his eat Raven he was trying to actually hit the main in motion here this is gather all running the curl but he see you're gonna see that he sees a little full opening here but it doesn't force the issue yes see the hole he sees this okay and then he goes a breaks a tackle right there and it really becomes a fullback from about the 40-yard line in really a power of the guy and to annotate for everybody the big questions how do you replace those impromptu players waiting throw in a good shot at a pack in particular at the fire got three here takes up with the 43 please hand up couple of yards cook up for Cedric Brown the Russian has been a problem for Purdue not been able to establish to run this against weaker teams in Central Michigan and Kent State we've got to get more intensity from our backs you know only they shared all three of these guys dude the joke teller says you know if we rushed for 200 yards a game we aren't throwing the ball now he says hey we said we ain't thrown the ball up the world probably team we know that we are Frank Solich last week at the basket of you [Music] let's and the pressure effectively crazies in complete Lansing the green number ninety drilled drew police and Brock Williams number one came off the corner so when tooth breeze has seen it this week is a lot different than he saw we could go against Kent's days and hit Clayton uh people's own corners fire corner blitz by Brock Williams and then Lance degree defensive tackle got right in his face one thing Greg Maddux want is a much more aggressive attack he has the physical players that can hit hard and they can run absolutely dime package again at 6 DBS for Notre Dame on food and six men appear freeze rolling verse others and he was well covered by Shane Walton impressive stand for the Notre Dame breeze is over for what are the things you do when you go in motion is you terminate you see that they run with them you know you get man from me and coverage but I want to the Notre Dame defensive backs are doing a good job but their squat I think Drew Brees is going to have to throw the ball up team up top up top because the defensive backs really are squatting so brave one of the most frustrating games of his career couple years ago against Notre Dame and they had a chance to win it they were up the too late fits the Tony driver in the final minute Notre Dame came down for the field goal I miss Bush this time gets it off the hill his little clothes get through are allowing that one to go all the way to the end zone and the Irish have the early momentum at Notre Dame Stadium 7 nothing early on [Music] back in Notre Dame Stadium the Irish off to an early lead let's throw it down to our partner on the field Bob washers at Bob Tagore all right Craig thanks very much who said Gary Godsey couldn't run the quarterback draw huh not a bad start for the guy who was actually not even recruited to Notre Dame as a quarterback he was recruited as a tight end that's where he played in high school but junior season first game last try before half-time his high school coach knew they needed a bomb to be thrown he put Godsey in he threw a touchdown pass he's been a quarterback ever since now I'm not sure if these numbers mean anything but a senior year of high school pretty good numbers 22 touchdown passes only four interceptions he's off to a great start today back up to you guys thank you bob is a much bigger guy when he got here and even in high school 265 pounds and came on in the spring game in his 12th 423 s last ruling playing tar out of 40 yards and tobogganing no offensive lineman is taller than he [Applause] first and ten at the 20 and up to Joyce and well played laughter made to stop master Bob interesting I've talked to some of the pretty coaches before the game they didn't even have film on Gary Godsey other than high school footage which are about the same he was recruited to Purdue as a high school player they know he can throw the deep ball based on this but that was basically the only footage they had to go back in Scout Gary Godsey back upstairs his finger was a good photographer shooting the high school games his top target Chris James the best friend is a wide receiver on Purdue and they talked all week long about the big game second in mind challenge began the one game not working early to the mom well his last start was the senior nice pen November of 1998 pretty good game though threw for 448 yards and five touchdowns we talked in Gary yesterday he certainly you know the game didn't seem too big for him you seem like you already deaf ready to come there's his high school teammate James this was not recruited by many big schools in fact that it's Garin for getting his scholarship to Paducah this attend who's gets in all these facets who's gonna wind up in alley I or a Connecticut playing big time division one football my soft cost Gibbons tippin's at the 25 and he's knock down short Auguste down yardage that's what the Notre Dame Fighting Irish pilot their Rockets sweet this is what they talked to us about this week to replace the you know the impromptu flight sabbatical one of the grossest screens get the ball to David Givens he turns into a pretty good running back but good defense by far booth news 8 yards chip that receiver and screen in front of them forced to punt we play the game to the poor Dementors Joey hold off to a good start Betty Sutherlin his back we all time leading punt returner and Boilermaker history averages almost 13 yards or return [Music] I was almost block booming putt chuckling I believe you right and again another Irish bounce 20 drivers his optic that light at the 10-yard line now if you're a centerfielder you flip down the shades didn't happen about the little black under your eyes 63-yard putt for Joey yo Baldy sophomore spent the whole summer saying three words ball drop leg swing and timing from the end of all three working there go in depth on the Fighting Irish for Lockean OMS NBC sports.com for God NBC's Notre Dame central which features player profiles game highlights audio interviews with coach Bob Davie and of course expert analysis by partner titanium msnbcsports.com the official website of NBC sports as well as Drew Brees throws the ball is going to get him three gowns most in ten they're backed up to the 11th looking for his completion is over for lookout handoff on the left side set morales and he comes up to the 20th play normally one for Getty struggling and I used the other white on the soft water Indianapolis line Robertson the stop amber ass and Brady for here in motion you're right southern as you see the guy who runs it rented twice last week they also have a pass it off of this kind of formation downfield bought by Andre Henderson number 83 the wide receiver from all these wide receivers look the do block pretty well Alice this play just out just a few weeks ago you could say that about several of the young Boilermakers they are young at white out in particular and in the defensive backfield when linebacker as well flag is down in the handoff subject ground running brush side and up to the 20-yard line of nine we'll see what the call is his coach joke-teller I took that's such a remarkable job here at Purdue outside against the Irish duty tiller was fourth you know for the first three years really has turned this program around three straight winning season three bowl games offside defense hurling decline - Joe tiller defensive coordinator here in the early 80s but man that he turned his old career at his old velocity reinventing himself went to Wyoming did great there that here for D restricted south that is one winning season no both games since 84 three years on the tiller three straight bowl games they've won two of them they've got excitement in West Lafayette again they're selling out teams has said they found Bill Swift couple and people are talking good new football now yeah you know Craven I talked about Purdue football you know potential anemia roses over first one since 1967 maybe a Heisman Trophy winner and Drew Brees very first Heisman Trophy winner and it frees were to win it so they should be except he has done an absolutely phenomenal job with this offense which is worked with for 14 years he said the origination of this office actually was John Elway's high school while cow that's where it started as far as he was concerned second demand at the 13 it's a unique offense and presents a lot of defensive struggle as well Brown going live to the lab so breeze his Oakland court passing with no success from the air going to the ground a lot more that he usually does check the weather channel see if he'll has frozen over they are running in the ball a lot more than anybody anticipated your weather channel guide you oh yeah absolutel don't travel so much buddy defensive coordinator break Madison but the challenge were impacted by one event for Nebraska am now on the sudden completely reversed with the situation we have like here four wideouts in the H back is flattened on the right side of the line empty set yeah and man-to-man there more than I am pleased with a look to one look to the 35 and he got across the first down yardage to about the 40-yard line nice run by true please a gain of 10 Denman and Jefferson on the stop Drew Brees is an easy guy to like if you're one of his Purdue teammates because he's not a prima donna watch him look left first nothing there nothing there and he comes back and then he just kind of takes off but he doesn't slide here I mean again I think he knew exactly you did about two more yards to pick up the first and so his teammates left the wires like that quarterbacks are sometimes tougher and pilots in the yard grows the defense is a little bit bigger yeah this first and 10 for the 40 yard line Rhys sticking about an option we've got a flat bonus alignment more people do like someone may have moved locally about that little option from Drew Brees remarkable career at Purdue in high school I was 28 oh and one never lost as a starter in high school and two high school in college dead ball false start [Applause] they went barge in there might have just this kind of lien just a pinch Big Ten officiating crew that's Ian Allen [Music] this is Oh fine 35 yards rushing and get this pack no new yards passing only four four over this world so far the first and 15 now for Drew Brees he lives it off back Cedric Brown up to the utility nine well you know the past few weeks the way the defense has been done Digital doodle zone he's been picking apart shorten passes to Notre Dame fun to think of that and I think it defensive backs are kind of squatting Craig expend listen I think they have to get a chance there get the ball up feels alone as matter of fact Drew Brees told us on Thursday felt that he get could get the ball to Vinny Sutherland but some deep routes haven't thrown the ball deep punch in the first two ballgames didn't have to because they're real soft so on but I'll tell you I believe these defensive backs became doing a good job of crowding he's wide receivers the eyes of the Irish terrific defensive effort last week he was good enough to win the basket put the bat in overtime freeze over the middle he's got a receiver and South Morales butts close to the first down it's depreciable to a breeze do some bets too little stop the native 11 here's an uncomfortable dance for them the third and about two yards it patience by Drew Brees and is allowed to have the patience was awfully good blocking up front again look lefty guy who's always unbalanced Drew Brees his feet are always right and get covered by Dexter number 27 just a little hook Rock comes back to the ball gathers it and then Beckstrom actually saved the first down the 32 is excellent I'm uncomfortable down foot for doing got four wives in the eights back tight in there looking at him instructed he's got it Stratton the tight end for the first down on third and short that the slap mean run for Purdue as you saw him in the shot kelan nobody behind the to Brees I think one of the reasons he's so accurate he completes about 63 percent of his passes his footwork and he's always in balance the ball never wasted motion when he's thrown it would crush the right to the left he's you know always prepared and again makes very quick decisions and then he's incredibly accurate that's a pretty good combo he's a walking record book last week becoming the all-time total offense that he's been on just about all of the new records proud again he's been at the front line only about one Anthony leader and Harrison in on the stop today one thing when what was what to do and Jim Cheney the offensive coordinator is thinking about for Purdue with all this man for man covered to the outside if you spread it if you're able to pop that runner through that initial line of defense you have a chance for a big run but a day the known of a defensive line has done a real good job of stopping that one back offense and not let them get that big guards fancy Pop's split wide receivers at seven one new side Morales the far side and motion is Chris read off the third tight end a good blocker brown on the keep on the take and he goes out across the 40-yard line getting the block from Brian Dalton thought he could pick up five yards and a third in short for Purdue boy went on the stop Purdue takes some very small rhinestones you see how tight these guys up is hardly any real space in between these offensive linemen they think that is that helps their past attention helps them pick up stunts do they protect through breeze and one sack this year 15 the all of last year you know one sack about every 14 pass attempts that six passes and now 10 one will do and that is totally unlike the book News's tight in Stratton right here he's again 34 big third and four please intercepted sheet Walton it's gonna go right saying number 42 that's you this is the play that gave Notre Dame control of the game we're gonna have some great replays here as you look back talk about the coverage you were in and what you saw that enabled you to be in the perfect place for the Pick six you know we studied this this formation a lot and out of this formation we know that they like to motion and the motion guy would run a shell across her and so our game plan was to was to bang their shell across her to give me time to get up get over top or in this case underneath right so I could have time to get come underneath and get the pick and I think it was one of our whole play I don't know if it was been men or nor tario Harrison but they did a good job of a bang and receivers slowing them down just so I could undercut it now you had a bit of a reputation that you kind of like to talk a little bit on the field and the the legend was that you had had a few things to say to Drew Brees before this play is that correct no you know Drew Brees was actually one of the nicer guys I only really spoke and if someone says something to me like I said my mentality every time I put the strap those pads on and for the helmet I was coming to knock you out and so that was my mentality and if if you want to get in the way of that then you're gonna feel something so that was our mentality as a defense and other than that just just knock you out and make plays and that's the persona that through has to this very day just being one of the classiest guys who's ever played football and he apparently is going to be the next analyst on Notre Dame football games at least have a role on the broadcast when he decides to retire when you see yourself with that beautiful full head of hair laughing I my wife gives me a hard time because there's a picture of me in college why can't you look like that anymore but it was it was a fun time and you know nothing but great things to say about Drew Brees he's a phenomenal person on and off the field here in San Diego he still reaches a bunch of people he still has his effect here in San Diego so he's a phenomenal person and I bumped into him a few times and he remembers that play as well so it's pretty funny you know of all the the millions of place he runs he still remember stuff before we get back to the NBC broadcast cuz you and I aren't gonna jump in again until the third quarter going up 14 to nothing making those two huge defensive plays eight how did that energize the defense even more did it allow you to be even more aggressive than maybe you might otherwise be against a quarterback who was capable of doing virtually anything on the field you know I think you stick to the game plan right it's working what we put in is we're having success doing it I don't think you change you keep running what you're running and you make the offense thanks for trying to do what they do now you touched on it before and everything I have read sense and the interviews I remembered of that day that Gary Godsey was unflappable so for the offensive unit as a whole how much easier did it make for them because obviously you go in knowing well just the uncertainty because of a lack of reps and this is NBC showing success that Notre Dame had against Brees in the previous game in Notre Dame Stadium picking the football off but how much do you think that helped the offense that they had that cushion because they are feeling pressure to be flawless and it's hard to be flawless the first time a unit place together especially in a game yeah definitely you mentioned about us changing tactics I think really what it does for the offenses it allows them to change what what maybe they do I think maybe they're not as aggressive anymore because we're up 14 points we have two scores you're not really moving the ball on us that well so it changes what they do I think our offense body and runs a little bit more just to eat up some of that clock just to put a little bit more pressure on on Purdue's offense well those numbers that you see from Drew Brees you know they're not going to last long and they don't so as we go back to the broadcast the defense continued to force Purdue to run the ball more than they wanted to but when Brees started throwing he started having success it's going to be a much closer game when Shane and I rejoined this broadcast so sit back relax I know there's some Purdue fans watching this too at this time in the Notre Dame Purdue rivalry it seemed like every game came down in the closing seconds and this one will embody that as close to the final gun as any game could be so back to the NBC crew so he knows how to respond to stuff look at rowboats spitting away inside the 45 Tiger on the stop Levine of six Tony driver another 25 the free safety for Notre Dame he has played very well in his first two ballgames ten tackles last week against Nebraska he is number 25 and an interception he's a free safety he's the one open up until this hole and would you notice about 20 drivers 210 pounds when he hits you you go down you know you'll spit off his tackles two off second and five while with the similar setback Randolph in motion and up again Aloha stop they've been her name to cover down [Applause] haki boiling the mayor's call it a super well that ball came out early miscues for the purdue boilermakers who start up a blood fun and interception and now finally getting at a bit of a roll or the maker down [Applause] there's rocky Boyan number 30 well he has played off the well to theirs to hit the ball comes loose that's booming boy it's his helmet right on the ball pops out yeah there are three blue jerseys around it make the recovery in his territory Oh Harrison number 51 Vulcan if one again there you know Rocky's being a linebacker said to their coach that he wanted to stay in the lineup for the coach like bad as he said head rocky your stories that no I want to be in the nickel and I want to be in on the dime packages to every single down he wanted to climb that's where the Pirates team to get going to the defensive board in a Greg Madison is such a fiery epic tough guy out there glass with Julius Jones plus the 42 Purdue defense play more elegance than Shawn Phillips even stop the chill in your scene there's a size of the offensive line the average over 304 pounds we can look at Purdue's defense they are very very fast just Doyle on the top you got a 300-pound offensive line there and then you listen guys that average 260 pounds likes but you know you think you would think million could be able to master data but Purdue is kind of responded pretty go on the running game so far yeah in particular was Phillips at 251 right side and Dickens left sign up to 59 second and nine Jones again and again he's met by the front uncle do strange day at this him everything he expected gone the other way you haven't seen the produce passing an expected of Notre Dame would have successive probably powering the ball absolutely this bronze back the defensive coordinator at Purdue former linebacker there tough guy likes the speed of his defense really concerned about to you he have ten freshmen that are on there too deep actually three true freshman in high school players a year ago will close on today three and nine for Notre Dame [Music] one out of two on third down so far watching ever start and snap on the plaits going in nearly as men and Jaden hunter he was hit hard by the Blitzer lady dull and the owner name will have to punt is hanging in there in the pocket the O'Brady dough is the free safety number 38 right here comes the wrong way you see the hole I mean it tremendous oh gods he doesn't flinch stone I mean that's one of those plays I think yet you watch that tomorrow and you say it didn't this guy's got some courage you knew you're gonna take a shine that's a good early sign for Notre Dame even though it's incomplete some God see with the boys back there no ball the player former Sutherland such great hang time watches it and finally Purdue gets a bounce it took the entire quarter to get a break 58 yard punt Drew Brees is back in the attack the average lead 14-nothing after one we'll be right back after these words from your local station [Music] our aerial views the courtesy of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company Goodyear providing aerial coverage of the world sporting events for more than 75 years Purdue and Notre Dame historic battle 55th Street meeting in the meeting since 1896 so prevail in two hours route 25 route 31 we took the time very nice Indiana post of 10 to 20 lows hit hard by appointment but was okay checking up a bit for the county for five yards how about the place selection in the first quarter 15 runs for Purdue and seven passes now that's their 16th run in 7 fast enough I think what Joe tiller is seen he said hey they should be if we can get those guys to that first line that's mine man-to-man defense we can have a chance for a big big one but they've not been able to make that initial last week for example he passed fifty four times and [Music] and this year 88 patch 77 Rogers another run Wow mrs. loss is not per doing and you got to say Notre Dame has taken them out of the river this is a passing team refill Taylor says we know who we are [Music] you know they almost will get the runners it is irrelevant that's right in fact the offensive coordinator said to us Jim Chaney he said yeah I'm emphatic to the one who needs a four wideouts empty backfield in this set fold down and throw the truthful father pulled out well this is man for man up here like strata near the tide and he's got him at the 31st down so I handed receiver and a bit of a free spirit for the quechua to Israel on the coverage you know what Tim strap does he gets really good body position and he's right here you know you see that man's man bump and run he knows his four downs but it's like basketball it's got body position kind of squeeze the defender out in those for the first down just wait volleyball player in high school his coaches sometimes get him when he's blocking poorly said hey spread foot blocking like the volleyball player was not selected as a captain will say that still a bit along building in the second quarter it's four to nothing Notre Dame he's looking past again thinking now going along to the speech to Southern gotta stop this guy welcome let subtler knocked out of the 14 where is a flag to flag down back deal to the cookie yet another to see him but we said to ass Thursday I think I'm going to have to take some shots - Vinny somebody downfield among the roughing on the Irish yeah personal foul in the yard so that'll stand but Sutherland with tremendous speed [Applause] again it's going to be a late shot on Drew Brees which is the pedaling good pickup on the Blitz pump fake you just felt something we're crowding those receivers sooner or later that's pretty good car like Walter but a great role terrific catch right here okay what's the pump fake there you hit it but pretty good coverage down morning just right over the top and then on the other end of the play the roughing the passer love jewel breeze late [Music] Laurence Olivier's Sutherland a 53-yard gained a hyper guy will get about 30 plays the distance inaudible subjects first and goal at the seventh single setback as well breezy about the motion touchdown [Applause] good sneaky play by offensive coordinator Jim Jania the tight end going to the writer wrote leglock really good call by Jim Chaney and one thing about Drew Brees I mean he doesn't discourage easily you know a couple of big passing Bloods they were very you know they're gonna stick with this money game until Notre Dame really kind of kind of takes that away cook the lock by Mack like the left tackle on their spouse to the left guard [Applause] doors on the extra point got a big lid and he's got it [Applause] [Music] play the Sun when Drew Brees has his Boilermakers on the board it's 14-7 Irish [Applause] [Music] Ratman Ivania back with Pat Haden that Notre Dame Stadium Vinny Sutherland saying hello West Palm Beach data and a banner scored the touchdown mantra low at only 51 yards Watson coming in he only has 46 of the touchdown as Purdue battle back from miscued to get back in the game Dortch will kick off Julius Jones when a hundred yards that don't let's kick the weapon boss completely out of the end zone it's deep but Jones one of the ball he's thinking about taking it out and I'll kneel and the Iowa still stuck at the 20 yard line let's go down to Bob will choose Whitney injured quarterback or there's battle for another day alright guys thanks very much Arnez how hard is it for you not to be out there oh it's very hard you know come on seeing all these fans and team being pumped up it's hard not to be in there but I'm behind 100 said we're about to get a look last week at the injury can you kind of explain it because it's hard to tell exactly where you got hurt yeah the scrum without was able to evade a defender and I've delivered the ball I was hit late and it's coming down I try to break my fall and broke the cracks in my lover is can we take a look here we got a some type of a brace on the wrist how long you expect to have this on there just to the head of horses over wanna see doctors and hair specialist and his table teaspoon hood up what do you think of the start Gary got C in the offense I think they come out conservative righteous beef is a specialty but he's hanging in there we're gonna make some adjustments and I have a sense of the game all right good luck hopefully you'll get back at some point this year thanks a lot that's our next battle guys upstairs to you thank you Bob Julie's George with a nice book that was pushed out Julius you know they really have it the others have not had a lot to do in the office this week really even last week you know it's big runs by Arnez battle but they need to get Julius Jones going into production of the running here pitched out of ten dot C path tickets cocoon telescreen and George has a block of all the forty don'ts playing at the fifties knocked out of the courtyard Jim Jones been a big pot for Julius Jones on a bed gainer for Notre Dame Kevin Rogers the offensive coordinator some credit said to us yesterday you know we're gonna miss those draw those drop players to battle how we're going to replace those with a screen passes we've seen two of them one to Givens this time with Julius Jones perfect timing you know the offensive linemen time that they block through guys early it was Jim Jones number 55 there's Danny 69 Jones gonna wraps his guy up good block downfield by a wide receiver Johnston to first and ten at the 39 I formation Jake Johnson in motion Jones straight up cut block and big room for Jones what the fun is all the way to the 20 yard line today from his home safety spot making the stop after the date of 18 Julius Jones needs to become the go-to guy for the Irish offense honey is a very explosive player but he's also just a disciplined runner seasonal won't bounce it out big block I think by his tight end Dan'l Larry there allowed him to bounce it outside he's got speed and he's got explosiveness but I think what you like most about if you're coaches how discipline ooh-ee is in the runs more like a defensive board in a box back so there's this week to be believe it or not whether gonna perform a goal against battle on the option attack because of his fine speed defensively this style of offense the one point is the victim may not be his place man for as boxy that time well played by Craig Terrell team up to sacked a young quarterback at the holding Meg Terrell one of those ten freshmen in the two deep we will talk about inside tackler inside tack inside player they like him more really as a one defender but the protocols have renamed it to inside [Applause] he just kind of sports two blocks high school at 27 Saxon senior year so it does have some past question ability 19 a year up to this defense is really gonna be good redshirt freshman suckin em down 19 after the loss of dying God says went to the left Givens in motion Givens hasn't dropped the ball go 40 and it isn't completed yet completion on a fumble that I bought in completing the third screen call on the day that was once again that inside rocket screen they they caught it David Givens part wide receiver right here we're down here slips behind these guys that's what's supposed to go love something going there it's ryeowon in the nineteen year is there to make a play Givens frustrated the first couple of games talk to Bob Davie and the staff about becoming more involved at the time he dropped the ball pulled in nineteen about twins to the left David hunter the receiver to the white boys clean well played by Matt Mitrione Oliver Tambo puts to the fullback when did Mitch reown read that I mean he had a stunt going on I mean he had a stopped in the trio but then he's felt those offensive lineman pulling out them he's writing here well aides gonna steal it and he's gonna go with the flow and here he has exceeded this guy they say he feels his offensive line now from the nose as a screen and makes applies a really good play by the trio Nick seda is do platoon his career as long as 32 this would be 47 for the sophomore and that 32-yard gets a damn [Applause] Adam till home sir does it have enough it does [Applause] when special teams to the Irish this year all coverage to turn kicks have really good said has been a surprise he was not in the regular kicker but he was shocking in the preseason scrimmage so good he displaced David Miller and here's another faced wide from downtown it's the 47 yarder many Irish walk by 10 looks like he kind of expected then you elected out of your kicker like a guys get too excited but he wasn't there Bob Davies club is up by 10 in South Bend [Music] off-the-field go from 47 Nick Sena has put the Irish up by 10 with Drew Brees waiting to get another chance after scoring a touchdown in the last Boilermaker drive that McNew will kickoff for Notre Dame [Applause] and again it's Ennis and Sutherland the dick again goes to the speedy shuttle at the five for the 20 not much room to find and he's taken down 22 yard gain Terrence our being to stop more Fighting Irish sports information log on to und dot-com will you find highlights and audiobooks with other Dame's football coaches and players buzz each week und calm offers fans a chance to submit questions to a featured Notre Dame player that's und calm the official athletic site of the University of Notre Dame you know almost mid second quarter Drew Brees has only thrown nine passes were neranenah through that mysterious through what 83 in one game against Wisconsin an NC double-a record it depleted 55 badges cook said there's nobody better the country at quarterback Drew Brees adage upon debut though he knew delighted to see him hand the ball off to any running back and we don't want to see Drew Brees is back in that shotgun you know one of those wide receivers Greg Madison feels they have a pretty good read they think on Purdue's you can anytime they sea breeze underneath Center it's either a flank reversal a run and he passes they say 100% of shotgun and the joint a lot of the great hits recent weeks to their defense and he says it's contagious and one of the keys to though the Dames do their physical presence inside handoff below Dedmon up to a woman he dragged it for a couple yards they're going down gate of course there was a change of pace and over 100 shotgun inside handoff hundred percent pass out of this little kick-out block there by Randy boy the semi said the right tackle the Madison told us he wants to do it to do as well show three rushed for bring back switch up the what's the do breezes puts an ontology God sucks to the left but he's looking right now some will grab for Drew Brees Beckster trying to grab them just tipped him up as he got over to 45 near the 47 bump with the ball but the sitters down yep yep 8 of 15 I mean he is a dangerous player you know what it Bob Davie said yesterday he's got really strong legs you know you worry so much about his right on Jesus forget about his right and left right and sometimes 6 1 215 pounds really good mobility in the pocket not forcing the ball off to the 1 interception no panic in his eyes and he just sensed that day even though he's down 17 to 7 feels like it I've got the game under control retro on the offense cooking a little bit better forty-seven those the single setback ran off in motion to delay this time of pitched alarm big some blockers and though he could not figure out to roam SAP flag on the play well played oh by Jerome SAP to sophomore from Houston number 24 the other day well well played until it was perhaps sad that the facemask infraction incidental face mask on the defense five-yard penalty from the previous spot still first down fifty call that a number 20 they're thrown Sammy incidental yeah right there that's five yards worth didn't he I don't know if that was incidental or not what his hand just happened by the bars here look the pinch more serious than the five-yard variety of facemask wasn't coincidental it okay now Drew Brees has thrown the ball once deep and that was a completed pass and I feel what the tight coverage is get he's gonna have to get to the decks and get the ball up top you see this flying out to the lightest breeze hands off inside low gets near the 40-yard line you know no one has works in the back vocal Purdue coming in but it looks like in this game at least Montreal whoa what are you taking over sophomore season year ago as a freshman kind of seize to position Craig and a nice year 841 yards but you're killin in this offense you're like telephone operators people don't notice you when you're a running bag to produce ody to see 60-yard 11 carries [Applause] since you are touched on as well he's got the ball I was going to come back left side to the brown he's got a lot of real estate 30 yard line 20 yard line and sat knocks him down and that was a good thing by breezes will open for a while breaking to the right 25 yard game soccer go to the side [Music] okay boy it is this beautifully set up and a great call by Jim Cheney this is Louis round who's gonna fit the little hand off here and he's gonna be the receiver watch these offensive linemen to get out front a Kobe was a 56 Allen this cows team I mean look at the room you good box right in here well-designed plan shaky at the start back you can sense the dual boiler Michael offense is heating up but the good drives our own lose again rolling looking for Sutherland in the end zone that looks across the middle back to southern flag is down [Music] [Applause] but I'm not sure whether they caught breeze across the line of scrimmage it looked like it was painted from here but the official beside judges right they're ineligible in our dinner theater he is absolutely disagree the offensive lineman they have a timer in their hand they feel hey the ball should be off at a certain time that the ball is held for a long long time then maybe that's that's what happened ineligible receiver on the offense five-yard penalty no first down so the gates the 14 yard gain and you see Joe tiller the head coach talking to Chris ran up tiller now in his fourth year 27 and 12 as the head man of the Boilermakers but he said this was not a benchmark game today big game on the bench like game I think it is a benchmark a Moffatt hundred anytime you play Notre Dame from the state of Indiana mr. dillis it's a big ballgame 86 and wide to the right along with Morales I've got twins to the left as well but they're gonna hand it off the row at the 20 a yard so Dedmon the Notre Dame made the stop we're slippery and Anthony Weaver V James Scott we've all done a pretty good job in that defensive line and Mike Brown does a good job mr. leprechaun he's - he is a hyper leprechaun he's one of the first guys degree anybody in the Irish who gets in the endzone there's a great speed for a lot of them we used to play high school football shows second and 14 he's had big tight end strength again this is the bubble squeeze at the callosum confusion was going to call timeout this time we'll take a break it's 7:27 remaining in the half that Notre Dame leaves but Purdue's on the move 17 7 hours back in the day rated 17 to 7 is korkin a little confusing when you look at the gamepad is famous special teams team go to vans attack got the news starting to warm up offensively laid out washes them 223 267 so far second and 14 Brees working in zone toward their Sutherlands in a squeaker but a touchdown we got five buck Williams and Walton both corners quickly becomes time for Purdue's no lead is safe against this offense and as we said he just don't seem to get discouraged any southern is a big play guy found a 99 yard touchdown pass a year ago and in 12 career catches for the Boilermakers he's at he's a good player and a very fast a 19-yard touchdown for Vinny Sutherland who to see the extra point made not playing the contained in a good week last week he was sent for the books printed for conduct detrimental to the team this was in contact detrimental the team I want to tell you they the slant he you know a really good job running the slant catch it meant breaking a tackle take a look at he is right down here first a pattern good route good release gets off the off of Walton cuts inside bad angle thereby the safety allows him to break that tackle good patient throw by Drew Brees once again first to release you know you're never gonna be him two cats to touchdown if you can't avoid the bump at the line of scrimmage they can make that goodness that was Tony driver the driver took that you know a real deep angle and someone it just cut right underneath them perfect throw by drystone allowed him to make the run after the catch Joe tiller should be very very happy starts with protection always that's Matt light 78 clearing the way that's just a you know good play all the way around you know you gotta be a good to be the coach of Purdue because you do a lot of clapping let's get we're in 1714 good ballgame is deep at the 10 and he's not done and the 15-yard line Todd boy made the stop [Music] and for good clicking at all sides of the field right now they're the conclusion of today's table select the Chevrolet player of the game each team Chevrolet will make a contribution to the university's general scholarship fund [Music] I shot notre dame's to him expanded a few years back another Saturday you look at the older talk about a while ago before the touchdown as the offensive Purdue has dominated Godsey has not had to do much yet the other pumped interception in a fog light zone 14 points off miscues bouncing Han up that was telegraphed and jitter suits picked it out quickly like Brian Dickens the slight but quick left edge lost three Brian Bacon's gonna 15 it's 259 pounds kind of a real speed play didn't look like the offensive line had the light snap tail but Brian Deaconess at the snap count how courageous is Devin Rogers gonna be the throw here at his own 13 where the guys only thrown five in his career see whoops pretty poised right now I got the ball downfield O'Laughlin looks pretty good but the cheaters on both side he's gonna put look out well it just went off the hand of the intended receiver to radicular look for new guys it's my biases that passes here on the near side Jean would reduction we'll meet up again Woodard number 7 for premiere the corner really Jared and roll really saved six points for his team because number seven a shot David Gergen is all in his right there to pick that one off at score 13 now [Applause] this is a good stream players that in the ball game [Applause] got to on the shotgun [Applause] though complete that the relation of the pushdown Holloway with tight end every to stop +63 junior out of Bedford Texas a Dale number 15 down here he's the guy that makes a stop now last year this guy was an ingrate pass rusher let them sacks for the border maker they put him off in the defensive backfield there's the mr. Godsey Jon Gosselin awfully tough swashing your son what is in Atlanta watching another son George show through the started quarterbacks with Georgia Tech later on today father is a manager of the gap in the temple goes up someone's tendencies as it hits him and he slimmed down to the spout 2:35 Sutherland squeaking free for a few yards before Denman caught up with a so for news moving on offense playing well now a Dean within three of the Irish in Notre Dame welcome back to Notre Dame Craig Minervini Pat Haden 1714 Notre Dame leading as Drew Brees has led to streaks coin drives now he's warming up on campus Bridey was Ziglar Kaikoura that gets his fatigues fraternity Sigma guys some pretty good quarterbacks he drops by the Turner house a few days a week for lunch they said he had no idea was other quarterbacks happen it's hard to believe what they doing the teeth Derek the Alumni King who plays for that cyclic eyes are poor you're right a real battle here well it just brings back the Laura Purdue football verts Anthony you see the names like Bob Griese Lance Legault suggest me live at the late 60s Rose Bowl that's where they went to and drew trying to lead him there this year well you know they have a legitimate shot obviously the big 10 tough tough conference but they play a couple of big games at home to ten conference opponents at home and they're tough marat/sade Stadium slide we're stepping up to make the stop you know one thing with the look at the numbers we just showed you say hey guys you know we're killing ourselves in cause we're moving the ball and if we didn't make the miscues we'd be leaving this game instead of traveling here did you say what caused the miscue smaller were good defensive team we played three good defensive games in a hall and there's no let-up and one more time you saw totally dry fleece safety fit in the hall and he was the best on Britney his taxes they really don't question the Irish man the answers today what it straight up where they gonna need all the other weapons right special teams the big defensive stops because the offense is really not done a lot so this 11-minute with the line of scrimmage it's 11 defensive players right there brings to both sides of the field Brees working with throwing off the hands of subtle in that tough rock warriors what quarterback was all over [Applause] you know plain quarter takes an old front a lot of confidence and the short medical bill 11 geyser you know usually there's somebody back here there's nobody there so if you get a little protection and get up here you got a chance for big boy but who brought Williams right down here what pass interference is a good play by Williams he does say brings a little bit of the attitude to this Notre Dame defense they haven't had in a while see you at Hammond Louisiana special team so big in recent weeks fruit over there yet for all his back deep gorge gets the cut off [Applause] never bear catches makes a quick move to the 15th I was gonna go there shot got to roll but to the 30 [Applause] with a block and get the wrong they're pretty good of taking out those stickers to the weather turn he is a fun guy to watch the nickname the jockey cuz he's small but boy does he play really large the guy could make guys miss those had asset blockers up and how would you like to be the punt ready to bring him down 40 go back in the boat they Irish up by three points 357 ago let's go down to Bob or Susan alright guys thanks very much well Steve Adagio the offensive line coach for Notre Dame several different times here in the first half as Publius group on the sidelines Pat you've mentioned several times how undersized Purdue's defenses up front well they're doing a lot of different stunting running a lot of different games and blitzes with the safeties and so far in the first half but I'm sure the staffs will prove it out that has confused Notre Dame's offensive line been a constant source of conversation on their sideline backup feel the trio and one of those son one of those stunts stops true formation behind Godsey Johnson and Gibbons have gone wide to the left the inside head up the pitcher flag down host of the front line for Purdue on the stop led by Landon Johnson the other guy in for pollutant out went pops number 42 a guy that rocks packed was really happy to have back off an injury or some concern I'm not sure if it was Mitrione on this play or not but they were concerned about Mitchell getting a quick jump on the right tackle box side defect have been box though on that particular offside there's something that the Irish were somewhat impressed that material get such a good job to look at that right they've got the ball here in the four yard I have State scored the TD but other than that but not been terribly production right having watched the ball very well whoops just not quite sink sometimes that happens with starting a new quarterback but they did all work all week to work with Gary Godsey sign on campus this week in Godsey we trust it's gonna snap dead ball false start oh they have the four yard touchdown on the first depth of the block but they also had three would have gone seven yards one yard and three yikes and then they have the 50 yard where they led up into the field goal so they're having trouble but he turned around up there but even when our now this was quarterback in deep they really weren't running the ball well I mean that's a nice scrambles nice quarterback trash but they weren't really running the ball well to tailbacks between the check taggers hard by the charging Nadel came in the guy at 11 sacks a year ago and it comes in our and that's what it does should be doing brushing the past he is number 13 coming from the backside again this week with no chance June Jones the left guard has a chance to get out so ADA is so quick off the corner you know good pass rushers that first step is when they beat you and that's just what a deal did his 12th II told us yesterday he likes to collect license plates travel a lot with his family but is that Kansas is the others likes that Texas pine cones although redesign them over the middle this one is caught by Gibbons I will get some yardage back gain of nine Gobert Gardner talk about some of the light guys the 216 true freshman linebacker right there made the stop unbelievable number 16 you tell by wearing the number 16 he's probably not supposed to be middle linebacker he's posed to be late shirt of this year 216 pounds has started three straight games at Miller lined up right here no they started Joe Alden sideline a month ago the back injury just starting to practice now they hope to get back very soon that's in under some pressure feels it and he's going run up to 50 like getting my Landon Johnson look playing so today unless Notre Dame gets this running game going they're gonna have some profits and they really haven't run the ball consistently in three games they've had some great defense they've had some terrific special teams and they come up with some pass plays in the passing game but they have not been able to run the ball much it forces too many passes passing situations like this and that's how your quarterback goes down when you get tackled by Landon Johnson Donald the Winston has gone back for more due to receive Thank You senior and of Indianapolis Indiana you talked about Sutherland being a hyper guy and joke teller says he can only play for 25 or 30 plays wears himself out maybe the excitement is catching up with him first bold on the putt Winston will come up close and let it go to 15 that's a boilermaker bounce and it's probably knocked down all right Chris Norah and Purdue will take over first and tenth coming up on the SunAmerica halftime report boost back will be our New York studio with college football scores and highlights at the top 25 plus an Olympic report from Hannah Storm in Sydney we'll have that coming up at half-time what's the relates to ceremony last night lighting the flame terrific the Olympic torch giving the crowd they think I was ever going to get up a PDS the torch is heavy to get to a while the music composed by a gentleman by the name of Kenneth died who is the band director right here in South penny for some of the music to the entrances this spectacular however that it could all out in store is here today he's not there yesterday [Applause] Dean Brown is running back ran into tario Harrison minute left to the first tap Purdue has two timeouts that was the first zone defense I've seen from Notre Dame in this entire first half that's when we're Joe tiller I think wants to get Judy's back and just kind of the finding those holes in the zone which he does so well you said will change a pace and 44 seconds left miss Purcell again I'm surprised actually he's hot because your tailor said hey we throw until we get hot and then we keep on throwing suck it in for the zone again these guys back here kind of teleported back at the zone please Brown he figures he's on the road up by three yield one and a half time with that lead Harrison of discussion goes in with some offensive momentum because they were very shaky starting out but they did move the ball last couple of series the Irish offense has not been impressive however again it's the other guys the effort the physicality and creating miscues has had Notre Dame on top by three let's go down to bob was using alright guys thanks very much coach your offense sputtering somewhat the first half what adjustments do you make for the second half well first of all we knew they were gonna blitz us and they are certainly going that we're not executing as well as we can on offense we hit the screen on them Julius Jones one time squirted through there against the Blitz we got to come back and have a plan for the Blitz when they're not blitzing they're twisting up front you know I think defensively we were playing solid we got to find a way to cover number 14 there's no question that they're going to go to number 14 on offense so we got to settle down we got a young quarterback in there I think the surrounding cast on offense has to play better I'm not sure we've really given Gary Godsey a chance because we've broken down on protection so much coach thanks good luck in the second half Craig back up to you thank you Bob and we now take you over to New York at the half here it says 1714 Notre Dame directly down to Bruce back in or New York's to do with the SunAmerica halftime report 27 times for 133 yards that is highly unusual for this Purdue team [Applause] now Joe tiller right now has to what he's thinking about most concern right now is this is stopping you know the return game of Notre Dame they've been very very good mom Davey what he's worried about is a can we get that running game going can we get Julius Jones it's a little crease or two to pop through Davey and tiller both in their fourth years respectively at the schools Davies anchored out 22 and 17 could have been or we almost had a tough one last week against Nebraska forgotten now as Notre Dame has business with Purdue today Jimmy is jumping up Dean he's got a big old 2000 super tackle made by the kicker boy Travis doors came right in there it looked like the same Hall the same return they had last week against Nebraska for two big plays you can see a big old crease here everything sealed inside here watch this and in the kicker okay that's it a pretty athletic kicker Travis Doris tamiya he missed opportunity missed opportunity Travis athlete athlete's 11 state in rebounding of Montana and basketball as a junior and seniors the baseball team's MVP won a state championship the basketball have you saw his athleticism he did not look like a kicker football four six six to sixteen a shot at the kickers little crease there for Julius Jones and Jelena stop mourneth you know Craig this is what Notre Dame needs a little bit more of Jordan black over here kind of knock at his guy out Jones get it sealing his guy getting a little crease good tackle there by a done but you know they need a lot more of that out of the running between who looks like he's limping just a little bit second and four of the 28th I'm formation Levinsky and Tony Fisher gets a hand up up there the 35-yard line Shawn Phillips made the stop thought should be at first on pool builder there we go Tom Lipinski the full-back leading the way 235 pounds of fullback Tony Fisher's smart enough to realize hey follow that good lead block on 47 shots in the inside linebacker the joy fishers an unselfish guy he had started 12 straight games until last week Julius Jones was inserted the starter didn't hear a word at a Tony Fisher didn't complain at all hurts to tap all stop for nobody for the games now sighs well tackle it like he jumped Tony Fisher lost 35 37 yard line Mitrione again number 98 you mentioned earlier Craig Mitrione number 98 for the Boilermakers good player but he guesses a lot on the snap counter and they're gonna take him right out of the ball game they take him out Mitrione kind of guests is some is a little bit of a freelancer and you can have side defense five-yard penalty from the previous spot still first out and you know you can use your account here in party counts you know cuz he does get some 15 tackles for losses last year when he gasps guessed right some coaches just used the world cheap a little bit on that line and you don't forget the edges you don't get called it could be the difference at the back here that time they got it clearly offside put stabbed five features squeaking 3:30 up near the 45 is ill Shia push down yardage 1328 a third quarter certainly looks like at halftime Bob Davie went in and told his team head offensive lineman you guys have got to be a lot more productive we can't ask our new quarterback Godsey to do it all special team down there Jeff defense to do their job hey everybody else around the quarterback let's do let's do something right suck it down and one wins either side together for the fall back and but Pinsky you stop keep Steve I believe Shia push down your honor Sean Philips worn more of a stop for the Boilermakers our Purdue I'd say even though this offense is small boy they are quick they are really worn nicknamed the defensive coordinator Rock at all Big Ten linebacker they did give them a first out just got it to the 45 yard lines back was a three-year starter here at Purdue pretty good play with Drew Brees said earlier in the week just not like Notre Dame I thought you said hate to give the tape back to the moments after their win last week let's hear it for a few yards and that brings up a good point during the preparation time where Notre Dame had to worry about a.m. and Nebraska produce a couple of easier matchups with Kent State at Central Michigan they've been preparing for since spring practice for Purdue in bland and Johnson number 47 redshirt freshman one of those young players Rex Brock said about I mean he's one of those Wow athlete to watch me say wow this guy is going to be a terrific player big upside second of nine firefighters and the drive all rush is so far for Notre Dame play action well pitch to the foot back grabbed it off the shoelaces nice catches at 50 fell down around the 48 yards nice catch but a head that bald and thrown where he didn't have to slow down for it maybe he catches that and certainly runs for a first down maybe more now I think Godsey was expecting him to run a little bit more and the flat and Lipinski ran up feels a little bit but in power football pro football the fullback guys swear Greg is always open if you're patient enough to throw the ball hold on big down here don't remoted a 33 just across midfield this year the single setback Gibbons in motion to the left another play-action throwing he's got Gibbons to fleet at the 45 push down inside the 40 nice by David Givens 6-3 250-pound Judah from Humble Texas Gary Godsey use all six seven of his fight to get his ball over the defense he was got jumping I think if he was six five ball what if it knockdown but David Givens a little light a little running back a little wide receiver looks like a linebacker he is a strong guy that they cubed motivate you expecting David Givens to have one of those breakout kind of games play for the design major talented guy at heart he was telling us forever about a table he keeps working on it building and up back to Fischer for yoga so meant right by Gilbert Garner Chris blocked it but Givens was telling us about this table and bronze Williams's roommate said that table is never gonna get done when we started this class at summer school is working on this table for weeks weeks weeks heaps and it's gonna be ready next week it's gonna raise goats they're ready start out there ought to design houses and furniture a junior grew up in the Houston area second and 10 at the 47 Godsey looks like he's getting more comfortable those compete again for the tight end O'Leary motivated take a little bait Jonathan Purdue short passing game tackle they're like Chris Clapton the second to play in a row that Chris's come up made a bootleg nice cushy his head in there he's looking as soon as he sees a quarterback turn he drives they got a you know that's a really good tackle by Chris Pantanal the good name people are saying all week a clumped into a little smaller port on the water throw some jump balls to the side but this Popkin gets tested every week and he seems to respond pretty well [Applause] five straight completion score god see the truth again as a tight indian a year ago he was working fit number bishop a bus to her she pushed down again for better David the most impressive drivers in the game I think about God see you you're talking about implants and tighten in the high school you know he played some center in Stata fact the sophomore you as a center when his brother George was the quarterback with an apple different offensive line play this opening drive in the second half and we saw the person there weren't any holes there in the first steps first and ten the plantation first of ten at the 25 the Pinsky and Fisher the i-formation Gibbons is out wide right that time Perdue jumping up a Tony Fisher Ralph Turner stepped up debate the stop the strong safety blitz immunity keeps running the balls on you successful you try to bring that epi destroyed Ralph Turner is that guys the strong safety number eight can you come right back here and blocking the counter to that obviously we will play it's okay to try to throw a post router [Music] no gain second and 10 again tight hands on either side align more receivers givers Watson looking at kittens eluding the attacker gets it to Givens at the 22 he just managed to catch it Aitken and Dylan's trying to hook it up with Godsey get a good job there get a completion a bit of a dangerous pass however it's shorter first on the audience you know Gary got see these big jumps footwork down 6 7 2 MK 2 5 pounds but he's nimble enough just gonna avoid the rush you see number 15 a Dale there I still believe a deal a better pass rusher than he is an outside linebacker man wins in Houston right here the moved him from defensive end where an 11 sacks a year ago to outside linebacker and want to do it but just so pennant linebacker they felt that Shaun talks could do the job at right and he does such a good athlete you're a linebacker goes a little bit small and roll down in seven eval another long field goal chance for Nick set on Notre Dame the both teams have stickers she mentioned or she did a pretty athletic we mentioned last week set up 610 high jumper in high school great long distance sons truck guy as well athletic this one will be a 39 yard attempt set it at the 47 yard er there's then he's 3 for 3 in his career his first here's the kicker that is kept no good and put this one to the left moved it down but Knicks Senate going wide left the first myths of his collegiate career and it stays a three point game that the placement he just seemed to hook it to the left and a good opening drive by the Irish wasting the points on the board but boy they sure did adjust well and came back and ran the ball up and move the ball well fat 55 yard drive with no points Notre Dame by three and our thanks to the folks at Goodyear for today's overhead shots and up to the lakeside past 20 squeaking free pass to 30 up to the 35 yeah how about the hustle lanskell agree now that was the pop that Joe tiller was trying to get in the first half the running game but if you don't have your defensive tackle Landstuhl agreed 285 pounds hustling you know how flat he's way over here that that is one husk or Cedric Brown so you never know on a hustle play if you're gonna be the last guy last shot and lanced ugly when you watch that tape tomorrow at loaded in team is a he's safe touch 290 found those guys showing some good legs pushed to 10 at the 36 please on the gift and he hides it around right through that's noon week up about for Harrison and driver making his stop brown picking up a few yards in the play from high above these pictures courtesy of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for more than 75 years Goodyear has been providing aerial coverage of the world's major sporting events still only 12 passes by Drew Brees on this game you know the average is 45 averages 28 completions in two and a half touchdown passes to a game nowhere near that thus far this game second in a tips to the right now suddenly the motion to the left please looking that way now toss him complete as a man in HD Simpson a flag is down in the backfield dextra mother stop let's go down to Bob or Susan I recognize thanks very much I'm standing by here with Grant irons who has been nothing but a screamer all day on the sidelines that the only way you can let out your aggressions I swear go out there and how much he made some way somehow you know it's difficult that I can't you know go out there and play by example on the field but I can lead by example through emotions and through occurrence encouragement and that's what I'm gonna do good day have you been surprised that the defensive guys been surprised so far how infrequently Drew Brees just throwing the football but he was fair you know every week we were repair for Drew Brees and Purdue office happy things the ball well for us he was going to continue to keep playing as one one unit and that as a defense all right grant thanks very much not with that separated shoulder guys back upstairs to you yeah one of the captains of the team feel pretty excited though close a good players get said coach speak down nowadays coated on assignment there's already belly [Applause] second at 18 for the 28th [Music] empty set for Purdue let's extract comes back near side salivating then complete next him again the sophomores been involved a lot hasn't played much of the first few games of the shoulder injury of camp Jason Baxter without a strong game well you know that this offense forces you to play nickel dime and by definition those nickel and dime bags are not started so in the other again yet one two three he's at four or five here they do a pretty good job of coverage again it was an audible by Brees some Tony driver steps out he kind of counter audible eise's they go from man into zone breeze was expecting a man-to-man coverage to God's own [Applause] at 18 yards he's only two through six on third down Titan comes back to the line of struttin pleased with either side priest citizens oppression we got him in the backfield [Applause] alright defense coming through again here Shane Ryan Roberts with the huge sack on third and 18 to bring up a fourth and 23 yeah this is remember I told you if you watch closely we have about 10 guys within three yards of the line of scrimmage and so what we were doing were you all out blitzing them or we were dropping out in the cover three and at this point we had we had gotten to him a couple of times even when we didn't sack him we were not gonna want his butt and so he was kind of trigger-happy back there a little bit and so in this particular play we showed all-out blitz and we ended up dropping out to a cover three just kind of confusing you can see he was confused the routes changed against man and we're in zone and so there they were their run on the same page and that was you know the whole scheme of the defense was to not let these guys be comfortable and just be confused everybody in the stadium I think was shocked that they chose to run the trick play and throw the ball here were you surprised when he threw the ball because it looked like Sutherland was surprised yeah you know watching us again I don't know that it was a it was a call trick play but we did we brought a guy off the slot to try go block the punt and my job was that was to pop out and cover the uncovered man and I don't even really think he was running around I think that the punter just saw that the slot blitz and thought that he had the guy open not known that we disguised it well he surprised other but never looked back and should the release guy always be looking back because he's also going down the field to make the tackle so I mean tough situation for a gritty seller it is difficult you know I don't know for them if this was tagged and and the slot didn't get the tag or the check but it earned it was the punish is doing something just trying to make a play but it obviously didn't work and it was beneficial for our offense again well it will lead as we take one more look at the fake punt it will lead to a next set of field goal to give Notre Dame a 20:14 lead and in this game every point was critical so we're gonna rejoin you again coming up in the fourth quarter the other Dame leading Purdue 1714 in Fighting Irish football returns to NBC in three weeks his star tailback Tilley is Jones and Notre Dame take on one of the nation's leading wide receivers mid nilani Pitts and Stanford the cardinal wedding last year's game Notre Dame at Stanford Saturday October 7th right here on NBC Milton still surprised the call you know that's one of those calls thick-cut maybe do at the 50-yard line but not inside your own 25 the first ball game totally courageous no because that's point of bed to them killing that they've been able to stop the Notre Dame attack but they did come off the good drive last time 50 plus yards Jones on the carry for a couple and have you brought us back the defensive coordinator said hey guys you know this one's a sudden churn those kind of things you got to you have to respond sure he's getting his defensive guys ready to kind of at least force a field goal attempt don't give up anything easy and they sure don't look like this cop to number 23 was getting held that the corners played pretty good particularly in London second down big guys Lipinski started to the right Gibbons of motion whoops again this that's Mitrione again [Music] see how the call goes miss Petrie on there yeah big it did not an easy call for these guns make 10 officials Jim Tina the referee here [Applause] prior to the snap dead ball outside I got keneley go second out the dance module the second employee Toto and David are in another good battle and this has become a great labyrinth my obsessed with you [Applause] excuse me that but that's parents high formation Godsey will head off to Joan's battle the world right near the pushdown lead blocked by Tom Lipinski at the full-back position for Notre Dame they really haven't gotten a lot of running production out of he's been kind of a pretty good receiver but today tell him a Piske couple of good lead blocks that was one of them right there officials calling for time lipid measurer what will be their Thornton water first appetit is very close dresses round that's close it is a first down the grass is often wrong you know sir yeah [Applause] [Music] have lost addresses how about Gary Godsey Pat first start putting compose overalls kapal I just think he needs some more helping them you know that when he drive the second half the offensive line real kind of did their part they got that running game going but they need someplace rosetta gas pushed down intent Jones in the Penske again I probation Givens moves to the right and up to Joy's eluding right at the line he just got rid of material but thoughts came up to make the stop native of cuppa here at MIT real number 98 really is a piercing penetrating pega 15 tackles a year ago and you know he's a big body at 285 pounds but kind of just those sideways and stunts Lance you create a lot of negative plays it really slow down Julius John before I really had a chance to get going see he's looking at us this band all the defensive players have pervy Louis fans included defensive linemen [Applause] second down and say that I actually did not go to the arch Jose well he's met listen back again the patootie Lagos landed Johnson again what he slept in two men mylanta Joe you see why Bronx sprack is so excited about landed Johnson 47 he's over here that's club here 47 there this cloth first takes on the full-back steers it inside land - Josh it's kind of blows through - blockers to make a great stop that's a really big stop by Landon Johnson a good play by Fisk lopped [Applause] others put three wideouts in O'Leary is the Titanic's third and Timmy can get a force down they'll have to get to the two Jones is next to Ghazi drops back for into the screen great play Julia's chose by mystery hey smarty 13c for those haven't yeah I remember them that's two screenplays Matt Mitrione has shut down he's right here see he sees those offensive lineman he keels I'm sure he goes by Matt Mitrione and Joe tiller knows it yeah yeah Gilly the sophomore center Jeff Payne in the play Mitrione they second in a tough mated competition in kickboxing that goal tough guys said it now missed his last one and he's put here for 32 defense did their job Antonette specialties from the decision defense did a good job Jill knows however the wolf backfired for Purdue because it cost three points and they leave now extended whose sexual bob davie on the Fighting Irish wait third-order Notre Dame 20 at Purdue 14 at James Stadium pack animal the Irish leading by six points to 17 to go in the third quarter taking advantage of the fake caning three points although of course Bob Davie when you get it up to 22 you want to punch it in for seven wake up the echoes the mystique for the fans here at Notre Dame do some talk this reef become a great reliable reports over the years it's developed but the islands have dominated 46 times winning losing 23 time couple the news went to the last player and they looking for their first win here since 1974 the 131 220 Sutherland Oh can't elude the coverage Donald dykes got him good jobs I'll think open about the 16 look at the rivalries Purdue now this the 72nd game the Navy series it went played consecutively since 1927 USC also a favorite against Notre Dame now you know two minutes left here in the third quarter in Purdue's quarterback Drew Brees has thrown as many passes as his putter they need srei on the second half Godsey about sold one more than Julie's have expected that ladies on 13 balls pleased to try to tie up Patsy but instead the Irish tight freeze it was Anthony Weaver comes off a strong performance a week ago that got him near the 10 yard line here you see something really unusual that's now the second side a breeze you know only had one coming into today's ballgame only 15 of all lat all last year really good defensive line push up the front and then forced wheezed to step up into the end of the tackles loss of five on the play second and 15 because breaking out quickly second and 15 from their own 11 the inside Aubrey still has it now falling ass Sutherland complete my dreams that should be a close down about the 20-yard line Shane Watson in the covers good fake of the head the good fake on the handoff nice call hey you having some trouble protecting the quarterback get him outside he's a pretty mobile guy and faked that inside draw which I ran successful earlier cut block and then real disciplined route by Vinny Sutherland nice nice dancing good Ryan Robertson had one of the sacks earlier in the game and were surprised to get lying back here discs removed in the offseason somehow he's back quickly unfortunately for the other day with eyelids out whoa not much around the right tackle Weaver again a bit plucked 276 junior from serrator told the springs making the stock well drew brees finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting a year ago clearly is considered and should be considered one of the top candidates this year but this is what can you expect Heisman Trophy Canada to shine this is the time the game yet to do 50 seconds remain in the third quarter his team is trailing by six and they're at Notre Dame Stadium 7:4 1437 yards second and seven we're running an option pitching over lowland ink on the iris if you don't wanna look pretty good against that options attack and then Mennen Williams you know make the stop brach waves it has really played well me think about what he came into this game thinking hey I've got to defend 45 passes well he's only seen 14 that's far but he's made some pretty good stops on a lot of runs which he didn't anticipate doing probably at the light shoulder pads on today expecting on the past and should have the heavy step the duel may not get a playoff he left the clock wind down to read this third quarter so the fans enjoying this one it's been a good contest between the in-state rivals and after three quarters but 20 boots white Irish lead the 13th ranked Boilermakers 20 to 14 where were you eight back after these words of your local station with the bitter beating with time hating them some fans already had all the team colors there that's something Norman Rockwell did not do get away one of those managers spraying the helmets before the game played college football Saturday Pat here in South Bend as usual touchdown Jesus overlooking the stadium before they renovate and you can actually see if Club the stadium one of the things Tim strike that's how they was talking about the heat noticed when he entered the field for pedir couple years back here Vic playing a third and six or fourth or minor third down shotgun Brees please plenty of time this is the fourth quarter Shane and that is a key stop by rocky blamin stopping brief short of a first down that forced a Purdue punt Notre Dame certainly needed the football at this point in the game boy Minh had a really good game six tackles he forced a fumble and the NBC crew talked at one point about he went to the offensive coordinator Greg Madison and said I want to be in the whole game and breaks it well a second you're a starter goes no no I want to be in nickel I want to be in dime he never wanted to come off the field what kind of teammate was rock was the Beast you one thing about Rockies any time you saw him you know he's gonna be working out or just coming from a workout that guy was a non-stop workaholic and he brought it he had the same mentality as our defense and we just believed that no one could stop us and that was rocky for you rocky would give everything he had I remember in the Nebraska game the year before he had made this huge hit on the goal line and his hand is just swollen and it's just every time his heart would beat there's blood is just squirting out and I'm like you gotta get off no no no and he's trying to hide it from from the ref so he doesn't have to get out and that's just that's what rocky was Rocky was a he was a team guy he loved he loved the game and loved his teammates and he gave her everything he had so we'll be back to join you on Notre Dame's final drive of the game 20 the flags recovery that's where those stupid panels here is it funny it looks like he's hurt - man it looks like he's hurt Lord he is sit down they have a true freshman Rebecca with the same shape in his eyes but he did give up and this folder agrees with the call yeah you just know as a defender you're gonna treat quarterbacks differently if this is you know a running back or a wide receiver generally not going that ball personal file good defense right hit when you go to the head - an eye on automatic first down it's Craig Terrell number 92 typically when you go to the handle eighth to a quarter bag they're just gonna call it every single time well it's only 15 yards and it really should be more a hit like that but that's the rules but you know we do want to get busy too but that's ridiculous first and ten at the 35 Godsey will hang on Jones met me right at the line of scrimmage where you don't stepped-up he heard from a lot of guys talking this week with Purdue especially begun to their size but they were concerned about being principal and they know they're overmatched physically and Brock's backlots his guys to him to the boy they did a phenomenal job really of stopping the run let's go down about guys downstairs injury report from the produced sideline strong safety Ralph Turner on the sideline right now he jammed his ankle during the last series went back into the locker room they taped them up he has hit sorry into the game but of course Pat as you've been noting he really is key to what they do that front they've been sending the safety after the Notre Dame line all afternoon went to see if he gets back in the game the play-action thank you Bob it's nearly picked off and incomplete [Music] nearly had it replacing Ralph Turner's two freshmen Stewart Swigert when they think is going to be a phenomenal player at he's right here as a matter of fact phenom a player at Purdue in one of those plays that you kind of hold your breath since the head coach kind of into the ground and shot a butcher number seven he is a good cover corner and almost happened early in the first quarter remember that yep Joey get the ball knocked away from one guy by restricting its is 30% of throw down those along 1010 grazie play action lofting one has enough the receivable floats up then again it's nearly picked off Stuart swagger really should have got that one in a former contender for another but the Irish without the funds true freshmen students wagger he's the guy that just came in for Ralph Turner - bob was just talking to us right here team read he sees he sees then he drives the words of foreign I want to show us a pass or a punt but yeah you're right a ball that he probably could have caught was up here here making I think he ran right into his own man would you'd otherwise he picks that one off easily right through his hands a break for the Irish the man that a fast guy did not play much defensive back over in high school someone's gonna let it go to tyler's bounce right up to 25 yard line and again no return a 40-yard punt to show you the 25 yard line so particularly at the 24 12:55 remaining in a regulation toter Dave leaves 2214 picture-perfect day in South Bend Indiana and a good battle of rival separated by only a couple hours Purdue Lafayette Indiana noble name from beautiful South Penn leading by six degrees Heisman hopeful has not had the big Doubleday and a touchdown earlier interception as well as important as much as these normally guys on the keeps and look at him run up to the 40-yard line driver knocks him down at the pointy to get moved by Drew Brees as he got around tario Harrison the linebacker for Notre Dame gain of 17 you know an empty back empty backfield nobody you know there but you have to worry about those five spread receivers he's the only back right here all these receivers here once you get through again that's what they're trying to do earlier with the regular you know backs if you got the man from man coverage all the defensive backs have their back time here a chance for big left hit love to sleep in his arm 42 yards rushing under 80 one last turn if two touchdowns against Wisconsin to one game so concern with a big right arm he's going downtown here complete both of the receivers had a step from you see drew brees reaction after what he would like that pass back Brock Williams on the coverage Denny Sutherland against Brock Williams again ray he looks Trent here excuse me right there and then upper slide if you will it gets by I didn't get a good enough jam on it throws the ball in the side it's a touch Sutherlands got excellent speed and Drew Brees knew he had a touchdown they got away from not many do 39 touchdowns his sophomore year 20 by the last year and just 12 games cooked down in his interceptions the month old Ivana's much last year second intent over the bit on four complete was that Dawson mix to catch wide open Tony driver on the stop gain of 12 was that a gun I thought that was supposed to be that old bubble screen that Perdue usually run and then he that wasn't there checks off that and drills the ball Drew Brees throws has a strong arm and he can realign it when he has to as he did right there Wow Dawson v received it on a Drew Brees connection today John Stanford has not caught a pass he was their leading receiver coming in freshman number 82 of great hands most identities gonna go in a draw get flag called as you know sticking down by damn minute at the 40 the Oh umpire I got that one that's usually the the holding area indeed that's what they're gonna call bring that one back good call though good call by Joe Chill right until a team stops it I just keep running it spread people out run drew Brees Joe tiller taking notes holding on the offense ten-yard penalty from the spot of the foul still first down well put that lives on the left side of that offensive line this is there's cows T there that's number 79 Jean Murkowski oh yes doing the dance there the Heimlich maneuver bull takes him to that Sun that's a fair holding ball you know it's a strong guy loose cows t-62 3:11 the man next to him a portly the same thing of coke at the center of spots 800 pounds just about both wasted on by 27 points in Scrabble as he get miscast his name wasted 22 down complete to the tight end struttin receiver across the 45 soft hands that is rule on the coverage yep big guy Tim Stratton 252 pounds the very first time he ever saw Purdue play he was being recruited by Notre Dame in this Stadium but boy real soft hands big guy 252 pounds you know disciplined rout gathers in but pretty good after the catch is a tight in all big 10 tight end a year ago it's imposed on us Matt that he was just too big to England football group them 5'4 135 at 6th grade to 510 177 that took it up again the high school 2nd of a 3rd term tall former quarterback Drew Brees is stopped that time by Rutgers had a big game up front for mother there BJ's Scott in there as well number 93 great madison loves him once the way his defensive plan out that first three games this year Greg Madison has to be really happy with the defensive line because they're playing a lot better than they did a year ago look at the big of the crowd going here yes this is important down love the minister you mean in the ball game different looking crowd and other than a week ago there was a people from the athletic director Kevin white on the way down and despite that have been very close it is certainly a major Irish home ground down is that one on one against southern winds the snap please going to go after it and fall on it I was blaming jumps on everyone using with crowd noise Craig he had that silent count he'll you go out in the corner back lifts his foot up but he tells the center hey now I'm ready for a Kobe I think and never even looked back never saw him but breeze wasn't even close to being ready to accept that long if the breeze just did a great job of making sure the the Irish didn't recover it that's an unusual punt blocked punt interception first half the fake that didn't work out for Purdue and then the miss snap a series of plays that have pause produced throughout the game 22:14 shot that bomb by Dorsch generals for the fair catch bank delegate attend to the Earthmen fund of 51 yards with no return by drivers doors now did Howard missed that one though the name going for their second block and they nearly got it Dyan 57 remaining in the fourth oh they haven't forgotten this running around the state of Indiana Notre Dame Purdue a year ago Fighting Irish traveling to West Lafayette to play the Boilermakers 70,000 and Drew Brees and aerials show through for three 17 and a touchdown still the Boilermakers trouble I won after three however this 42 yard bomb lead the game led to a field goal Purdue by five then no this one's killed the Irish still they botched the clock then on a third down play Jarius Jackson is sacked and they cannot get another playoff because they had to call a timeout it's stuck in the craw to this day on the Fighting Irish as you look at to Bruce and Kevin Rogers still to this day calls it the most devastating loss of his career even more so than last week overtime that I'm going to class [Applause] it's Purdue on the miscue so father they're still very much into the course content got to getting away going downtown let's give it [Applause] our intent the gutsy call and pretty good execution I mean the quarterback is struggling all day then throughout Turner or he went out once and yeah mr. Godsey it's very very happy about his son good elusiveness I mean six seven 235 pounds what to avoid the rush a clean shot my material had him then he takes a shot the arm strength to be able to get the ball out there even though he's gonna get shot and he couldn't follow through so you see some pretty good arm strength by God's sake and there's that first big play by David Givens for the Irish this season one they've been hoping for for the last three weeks gutsy call by Kevin Rogers good execution by Gary Godsey and David Givens if there's a plan to find Godsey so far - it warms over the run I think is that so guys in front of Illinois Bob to Givens play-action he's trying to fake idiot his man get they're all going deep but the Irish got on the same page to that plan yeah I think what Gary Yahtzee a speaker may ease up by six points so you want to at least get yourself a field goal McGary Godsey is kind of growing in confidence you know oh he gets knocked down but he's just gonna get up but just kind of tell these good hey is that your best shot bring it on I'm ready for ya he's ready he's ready but I'm taking bets after work in the situation up by six you try and get self at least a few go make the two of score game option got seen at the 40-yard line Stewart striker than the stop we talked to the coaches of Purdue this week and they were prepared coming in for an option attack along with God seek if they felt the Irish coaches you look at rocks back invested two years of the option we haven't really seen much of it that was the first play Mikey you know I box her bunch up running with FM this didn't look like natural to him talk about some of the frustration we talked about earlier from the coaching staff before do now they Anna really worry about two different styles this weekend instead of just concentrating on Arnez battle in that attack and they need about Cardinal yards and so at least you know ten yards of the first channel but eight yard lead for reasonable few bullet entered the temporary thing even 8050 otter damn God see the first set the middle it's over the head income that's intercepted as he was looking for hunter picked up by swagger swagger alibi got see principal doing business nine months ago Stewart swagger was a high school player great high school track star Bronx brat says hey dude he's right here watch him read really was an option quarterback sees it against ball thrown hi Brenda the kind of passes that to agrees throw on the fourth quarter two years ago the Tony driver intercepted with what they did this Purdue defense has played really well ten freshmen to two deeps Stewart swaggered a true freshman he was started out today's game is the Nickelback over the entry to round Turner is now starting battling is only true to a the broken club in two days the Irish actually could have swagger here now penny not completed the pass anyway Notre Dame would have punted but there certainly was thinking about putting some more quotes on the board or moving in please see people take advantage stores was it completed Irish say no I think he called to be giving him the catch well Alice was diving to seven and yes they're gonna give him the guts Jefferson on the coverage good cats my second house Joe Turner was sent him Lou worried he's gonna perform today's dinner plate on this biggest stage the boys made a couple of nice catches today that was a really key line when you throw the ball low didn't get picked off generally and they have it in a incompletion but not an interception with a low throw second and three from the 30 empty sat tips to the left to end shovel in motion may enjoy he's going to throw it looking burns receivers got man butters put out about yet he was he also hidden let he may have pushed off did he catch it inbounds noticed no no his foot was out his right foot was out at Sanford we said momentum leading receiver there right the left foot out comes Dan left foot out no doubt about it because went right left it was okay then you said it for a year ago threw a touchdown pass to Drew Brees against Ohio State while I get in the situation there was second-degree now it's a big thing for in the clock becoming a factor 752 they better spy him on the quarterback draw looking left he's got three to the ride plenty of time open the middle Trenton puts down the tight end didn't play abroad Israel and a nice play on throw it down the tight end Stratton is Avenue to death you know what a what a target and what up an asset to have on your team a tight in with with hands like Tim Stratton and Drew Brees think was trying to get this ball downfield even though it's third floor he was looking up top probably his fourth choice and then look at him look on the way he just kind of bounces off the strong safety that's that's just a light vinaigrette Jim Stratton bounces off a pretty good strong safety in Ron Israel Tim admittedly says I am NOT a huge fan of practice always is different the coaches are hard time but man is a huge fan of game day for Purdue Boilermakers first and 10 for years against Stratton and drive around here all he could we put him down across midfield pleased him near the 43 a gain of 13 that was a strength throw by Drew Brees then read changes it up the Blitz throws off his back foot blitz is coming here on the outside dang it takes him outside drag doesn't and cut back inside gritty and really Drew Brees there's a great job of getting rid of this ball here comes the outside wood to defensive lineman the linebackers coming as well throws but has arm strength enough to get it to a state targeted tight in God to control first intent out the 43 again tips to the left Stanford emotion gets the ball nearly lost it but freshmen running inside the 40 near the 35 yard line dykes on the stop trickery offensive coordinator Jim Chaney that's kind of a rigor basic place that most teams you say let's have a trip lately we've seen they won't run out three times today the pass I guess was kind of a trick fly but it's kind of a basic part of their offense run that reverse to a wide receiver and once they pass it to about you just never know that he's gonna get into the dive and the defense is buying is it going to draw it as you're gonna keep it as I can inform Lowe's in the backfield ran off the motion the big tight end Louis got it Menlo Atherton Taleo Harrison the six 240 pound junior from Texas makes the stop a gain of one will be put in three six forty remain in this ballgame and Bob Davie said to us again this week you know last year we had nine games come down to our last drop and said you know we've must finish games off this season of it in the year ago if you are to do two down territory her third enjoy I think if he fits his plan so I would [Applause] field-goal if they did not advance it will sue it happens under center as a pit - suddenly he's got some rooted in speed as well 30 yard line 25 he's tackled from behind as he got to the 22 by Anthony Weber gain of 14 Denny Sutherland doesn't look like or run like a white receiving the sense I mean he looks like a fullback on my see he is so strong 194 pounds here he is looking in this time wasn't the handoff was a little bit of a pitch well time certainly not patient heating shoots canal run those up they get why no one do but he knew you know unique knew he needed three yards and he picked up about 12 with a trout 40 nothing early 1714 up the half it's about 22 14 inside six minutes lose the handoff inside the 20 he's got some room before he's banged out by the Modi's driver by Ian Allen number 55 did he throw an ice block you know kind of a shock block this off it's a line of Purdue cut to get in your it at your knees they chop a lot watch these guys yeah see there with those the block right there and that was number 55 Ian Allen really good offensive line flaws second down and four from the sixteen [Applause] twin Titans either sake to the right land off to the left [Applause] eight of a couple it up slow it down and see where they spot it very close to the first time probably about a yard Lord they have shy and I think people look at these kinds of offenses to wonder hey can you get it when you have to run the ball can you get it now now you're a two down territory that I think they'll drag it to need those to dance well Jim Chaney said even on third and short luckily run well we'll do it they have three or four plays on either to pass or the run on this third and short they could pass it as well but is gonna head out tripped out he doesn't fall down and believes to get the first down Weaver got a piece of him bond a lot of scrimmage but low fell forward and he needs all that he's only five eight you know I think this is if you Bob Davie and Greg Gadson defensive coordinator worried about do breeze first is right on but boy he scores on touchdowns with his legs and if you're Joe tiller or drew brees you say hey I'd really like to use as much in this four minutes as I possibly can before I know I score you'll take the sport anytime obviously but didn't love to milk that clock a few minutes before tea spoon Morales going wide left with Vinny Sutherland on first and ten from the 11 Brown is in brown with some move the flag is down as he's got near the two yard line in the backfield again that will be a whole the umpire through the flag again Jim black latina talking it over and yes whole thing against put dear boy we've talked all game about these miss useful module and these things are gonna happen in during the course of the game but they've been so many critical errors for Purdue because you look at the sheer numbers here Pat holding thanks Danielle I mean don't do is 376 yards and Notre Dame is just 182 total yet the Irish lead by six it's right here five [Music] that wasn't a whole day trips to the left five wide empty set of first and 21 breeze in treble let me get it out that's got to be ground and then they have it in the back to you yeah Dave for the poor now drew brees you know did a really smart thing he'd get up and started pointing to his tight end right away but his tight end was quite a ways away from him smart play by breeze who's he talking for why he's pointing that Tim strategy right I don't think there's a receiver really in the neighborhood as they said or the shot should be grounded didn't get it the field-goal does them no good o'clock becoming a factor 3:45 he's looking at chip to the left flooding won't settle it out there touchdown right now but flag is down again to the back field please does not see him he's got his hands up he may have been right he is noticing the flag now but let's see if he was hit late again down late who's walking pretty confidently yep personal fan letter via touch two years ago in this stadium drew brees the fourth quarter threw two interceptions as cost his team the game here his senior year less than four minutes when his team really needed it he gets the ball up it gives Vinny Sutherland a chance to get that's a strong catch by subbing Susan is a strong hands by southerly really strong hands Brock Williams really tried to strip on and they should be happy her Heisman Trophy candidate gives his team a chance to go up by one with this camp 2220 thoughts but a record 56 hit streak of his own not to match area 56 straight extra points between 98 and 99 [Applause] and a fantastic kicking career here an extra point for the lead [Applause] perfect so drew brees has battled back and the man has been busy settlement and on the West Palm Beach Florida with a huge game and now with 339 to go but focus back to the islands off ence really a clutch plan but you know what I think most of us expect that and a Drew Brees they threw the ball and it's a lot of use a lob ball they're just kind of and then I think the real strong hands of Sutherland because Brock Williams was gonna pull in his arm away from him really good catch Joe tiller will take it and a one-point lead with three and a half to go in the fourth Notre Dame Stadium Purdue has taken their first lead of the game it's a familiar story for Notre Dame in terms of the closeness Michigan last year a four point game Purdue five point game BC all losses here two-point game at Stanford three men of course last week in overtime against number one Nebraska and today when he can't play the defense did a pretty good job against Drew Brees again he's seven with two touchdowns to do however what her name was in the situation down by one we'd have to go and look at that Kent boy just what you need if he can tip off by your by your until you kick off that Travis door should get one but you know this is what Bob Davie was saying we've got to finish off games they started last year after the last game a year ago they said they want to be more aggressive on defense which they certainly have been and they want to finish games off they trailed by one they have three timeouts remaining you know Gary Godsey does not look overwhelmed by the something he has sought an interception but you know he didn't you get the sense he certainly has a strong enough arm to get the ball downfield with get thrown and Givens you've got some guys pretty good after the catch his last pass was picked off so we'll see than easier that you really need forget the mistakes the gotta go not quite needy because a pinball do it they do have to move it and that's not going to work Julius Jones just stopped he's got a rough day running Mitrione and Johnson on the stop yeah that's that's the old turkey sandwich they both had a slice of him man lamb did Johnson off the corner on the Blitz and Mitrione what when he when he doesn't guess you know what he is pretty thick it's a lot of penetration that one second and 12 but the stuff to get into of it took a hit Stephen hunter down here he's come up the last couple of weeks with some big catches for the Irish I was going with a four light up and a single sub back to the light of the quarterback got C over the middle in traffic Devereaux getting about a gain of seven or so he al made the stop gonna bring up third and short 2:40 remaining in the ball game down by one it's pretty good pass list hey you know that's a good good Tony Tony get it together all let him run with it afterwards this is so good after the catch take a lot of time here nada Victor guy plays huge turnover game could be the game third employee run formation [Applause] Boxey handing out push down to his jokes while Katherine gets a block there I hate you scores how do you like that well you don't get surprised I was running formation Purdue had eight guys up close the line scrimmage Juke Jordan black Jim Jones on the left side do a good job Jones number 55 black cannon knock on his guy inside really good block by Jordan block a black here those crisp Clopton number 23 is kind of scurrying around they're forced a couple of cuts by Julius Jones would save two TD rushing gave fact that has got less than three yards again on third and three that come through the big play over the middle incomplete for Gibbons Barger on the coverage they have not been able to rely on the run game it finally he got a good block good luck George is gonna go inside then he just pushed it outside for the first down but now it's second and ten Gary got see but Davies went to his house said I got to make it clear I've already committed to a quarterback the coming years a Titan if you want to he was dying to come to Notre Dame his whole life even came as a tight end with the thought that he could impress enough to become the starting quarterback for the world door lofting one nearly picked off turn down a chance at look at time mr. winder Terrence Howard the intended receiver flirt intent I'll tell you one thing the other day miss found out is that Gary Godsey wasn't hanging in the pocket he will hang him one more time here's number nine swagger we really did a good job reading thoughts he just got hammered absolutely hammered good you know ray by Stewarts whiter Mitrione in the big head 1:46 remain in the ball game this dude our territory further than 10 Datsun passing over the better complete first down who's got Jacob hunter across the country so on - okay Shane again we were talking about the pressure on Gary Godsey and that play that was a key fourth quarter third and ten completion Notre Dame is trailing at this point by a point so this is as critical as it gets and Godsey was pretty good on this game-winning drive he was four of six passing for 37 of the fifty nine yards on the drive and right here he steps up and completes another big fast yeah you know I'm looking at this offense I'm like god it's this office is incredible you have Julius Jones and Tony Fisher in the background in the back of the same time you got D gear and Javan and little Joey get through and then you look at the line I think three of the five guys went to NFL that that offenses is incredible I remember going up against cinnamon and off in practice they couldn't they couldn't beat us but I just remember how good they were in practice and just I mean Godsey had a lot of talent around him he just had to not lose the game you know there's two kinds of confidence you want every player to have confidence and you can see God see also really tough because he took some shots in this game but the best way to build confidence is through success now this is another nineteen at the previous week lost in Nebraska on your home field in overtime so as a defense on the sideline right now with Purdue up by one is there complete confidence that Notre Dame's gonna go down and win the game yeah you know again like I said I have complete confidence and in other wise I played against the receivers at every day in practice and then I play against guys on Saturday they made my job easier on Saturday because I felt like I was going up against the best receivers in the nation every week and then to have the play on Saturday I said this is this is easy for me so all the comforts in the world are often as you can see they got a ton of guys out there that can ball so all the comforts in the world that these guys are gonna put it in or get the go-ahead score and nobody was really being too cautious because the shovel passed that one - Tony driver that takes some guts in that situation yeah you know it's it does it's also a safe play too right because if he drops it it's actually a forward pass so it's it could be considered incomplete pass but it's a great play like they did it they did a good job of doing stuff and they did again they trusted Gary to to make plays and he did when he found it and the pair of Tony's not was Tony Fisher Tony driver played with you in the secondary we will be back in just a few moments folks you know that it comes down to a field goal and we'll get you there in just a sec done it three times this game and then its third and about three pirates always let their tight ends in these situations when opponent formation on food and fluids Jones up the middle first down another name down to the 22 flopped it on the stop and again and the throw down this drive that was huge there was a 13-3 earlier where's the fold and ten and now this one Notre Dame comes through at the big play in the offensive line really responded he responded the beginning of this half and a sudden three when you really need to create a hole they did there for Julius Jones Jim Jones 55 just kind of picks it off his guy Fame the center to the nice job forty-three seconds remaining gonna have to worry about thinking about a 47-yard field goal is there cloudmom a snap no no they just try to keep the ball in middle before yeah Florida though Pat well that's what 37 yarder it's probably gonna be a 37-yard field goal from right here certainly within his range as Bob reported a little bit of a wind Perdue thinking about even if he does if the field go to have a little time so they chalk up the timeout on the Boilermakers side and they have one left as well now you look at a guy like seta sophomore hit a key field goal last week in overtime against Nebraska to get milk one day in the early lead but in his career is only have five kicks you know I sense that Nick Senate is not just a kicker I says he's kind of an athlete we talked about on a break to track player and high jumper on track runner and I tracked high jumper he is and you know he's been pretty clutch most of this year this will be you know a duress situation for the kicker and then have Notre Dame with still one timeout remaining they'll run another play and I suspect Purdue will use their last timeout very quickly one for 2 today for 4 5 in his career hit a 59 yarder in high school and Illinois state record for Watford Township but that was against Blume high school in 1996 those if not a new boiler makers in front of 80,000 however here will be betting on what the Irish do is already got a 39 yarder now exactly what tip it will surprise the Irish crawl the last play [Applause] and I think they do want to keep the ball in the center field when factors Bob mentioned as well I formation [Applause] Lipinski engines behind Godsey Jones gets it not much Padula part times the legs maybe a yard gardener on the stop block moving and they're not going to use their last time out what are they a million and a letter one down [Applause] now using inside five this was the play clock clock hadn't start until he collided get down to five seconds case you get a bad snap you want to give yourself five seconds [Applause] the clock will go down to two [Applause] go down you heard that sinister down you like to give yourself five or six seconds he's having a bad snap you have another chance right right even from here will it be a 45 yarder if they messed the snap up you have still have a chance to hit that one you know it's Wow but this is it you know this is the you know the game's decider Nick seda is 19 years old today he hit the 47-yard hit the 32 but missed from 39 this one's gonna be right around that 38 yard field goal attempt just a sophomore strange number for a kicker to be wearing to number 13 well you know they say he's free spirited and nothing pushes him but I guess that's the best side yeah [Music] then you have all three parts to this attempt really is the snap net from a walk-on John Crowder has done it all year behold another walk on atom tipple and then the scholarship kicker LeDoux has one more time out as you can float to the 9 foot will they extinguish that one here it's like to get a lot of ticket right here 19 your nips set off the block so he's gonna do in fact they waited for him to the point of nearly the snap he'll think about it a little boy our thanks to the folks at Goodyear for today's overhead shots it was 1925 when gujia push began coverage at major sporting events it was 1896 when this series started when they won that game 28 to 22 they've met for fifty five straight years Eilish have won 12 of the last 14 but purdue from the tilith era has won two of the last three you know I don't Nick said a is nervous they bit - his parents aren't had the great performance in the preseason scrimmage to seal the job from David Miller last week we hit that building 29 yard against Nebraska at the time for the early this one is from 38 for the win walk on snapper walk on head we've done a good job this year particularly templed up the holders and handled some high snaps already this year John Crowder we'll snap it [Applause] set up from 38 it's [Applause] all right Shane is there any better feeling than winning a game on the last play uh it's incredible especially with what happened a week before losing on the on the last play and overtime and so I just think it really shows that the team's resolve and a belief that you know we're we're one of the best teams in the nation time to come off a heartbreaking loss in overtime to the number one team in the country and then come back without our quarterback and have a first first-time starter in there and come to win a game against a solid team and a phenomenal quarterback on the other side of the ball is just shows the resolve that this team had and this is just Nick's CETIS third career game as the place kicker he had sent the previous week's game in the overtime with a field goal he made three of four in this game I know Reggie Brooks and I have had a vaudeville routine going on now for close to two decades Reggie always tells me no butt kickers not real football players they're a necessary evil but not only was setup an outstanding athlete I think the fact that he chose to wear number 13 which is supposedly the unluckiest number in existence just kind of goes to his sense of self confidence that 1% Nick that's nothing to say nick is a guy that has supreme confidence and some look at it as like cocky but you know he had the alternative belief in himself and he had that belief in himself because he put in the work if you don't put in the work and just believe you're the best and I believe that's cocky but you know when you believe you're the best and you put in the work to be the best that's confidence and so that's what Nick had and I don't think there was a question anyone's mind if he was gonna make it or not it was just that's who he is and he likes that well he likes that moment and he came in and and provided for us now you guys would go on to win seven of your next eight games and earn a fiesta bowl bid so as you look back on it now and this was your first season playing football how important was this Purdue game to end up having what legitimately was a successful season I know any year when you don't win the title and you don't win your bowl game it's not what you want but nine and three against the schedule you were playing at the time certainly isn't bad and it could have gone the other way had you not won this game so as players how important did you think this was you know again just it forms the formulation of belief in your mind they're like no matter what happens we have an opportunity to win this game and that was the mindset throughout the year and every time I got that helmet on I just I would love to see what this team could done with our nest at the quarterback spot one of the best athletes I've ever been around in my life and you I said Nebraska game he's one of the best athletes in the country and a half of him back there and throw on the ball with the talent around him it would have just been incredible so it bummer for him but you know his path went well and had a great career in the NFL as a receiver but you know this again it's Notre Dame and it's what we do we we adapt we adjust and we don't flinch and we just we just go playing and win football games and it's not just throwing the ball but obviously running the ball it's one of the reasons you had so much option in there so you had to retool everything offensive ly heading into this particular game and for you just your third game to have the kind of success that you did you had an interception your first the previous week another one in this game against drew Brees you knew you could play at this level but how much of a lift did you get against possibly the best quarterback in the country with the success that you had individually and the success that your unit you know you said it earlier it's you can go out there and believe all you want and if you're not having success it's tough to to keep believing that you can do it so I think myself and for the defense and for this team in particular we kept having small successes and we would build on that and ultimately for the autumn going to have the big success so just those little small successes and just continuing on and just believe in that you had opportunity no matter what the thoughts and I know there's another special guest analyst you want to bring in before we wrap this thing up tonight we saw someone in you downstairs in your wonderful viewing room there who had a helmet on earlier is that animal is still there oh yeah come here he'll bring the helmet I think I made an appearance earlier folks during our taping of this and Isaiah is your five-year-old he's my father had a five-year-old a two-year-old I says is the five-year-old who I think will be strapping the helmet on in college someday if it would up to him he'd be playing in Notre Dame II anytime i if I watch in affair or something he said he said yeah this is not another day so he doesn't believe I can watch anything other than noted now watch his favorite number 42 he does it well he made a great appearance he's funny and well I mean we let him get out of he was already suited up before so that clearly is our fault but it's great you're wearing your Notre Dame Jersey what the players that you coach now how much does it mean to them that you played it no today you know III think the first thing they just think it it's Notre Dame and it's okay I'm old and then they think they could beat me and I line up every year as a freshman or a sophomore the things they could beat me I ride up with them and just don't let them off the line and then they then they realized here's that story I say hello who's your favorite team your favorite number who's your favorite player better say better that's good that's good it's not a game helmet is that one of your game helmets yeah that's my game helmet he loves to put it on and he already wants to play and he wants me to tackle um and throw the ball with them and so he loves it now you are you also still the athletic director at your school which school you had again at my high school that I went to bishops so I'm I'm the assistant a B and also I do work in the dean's office and from what I've read about that there's a similar culture there than the one that you experienced at Notre Dame create togetherness no same thing academics you know I went to Notre Dame a Notre Dame was was kind of easy for me after going to the school I went to and so you know I know every year every year at the high school I work at there's about seven or eight kids who get a perfect score on the SAT and if I 10 others will miss one so it's a high academic institution and it's similar to Notre Dame in that in that regard all right Shane we can't thank you enough for giving us this time today I hope you guys are quarantine safely in place and that we all come through this together but I know the fans are really enjoying spending Saturday nights and getting the insight from the guys who actually played I've watched a lot but I haven't been on that field for a Notre Dame game and contributed so it's great that you showed your insight and it's great to see the impact that you continue to have but I always tell folks is to me the thing that makes Center dame athletics so special is that virtually every athlete male and female that I get to know goes on to make the communities where they live better places a lot of them do it through volunteering you've even taken that next step dedicating your life to coaching and teaching and helping students and we commend you for that yeah thank you brother appreciate it thanks for having me on and it was a blessing to be here and I just appreciate it again and I say thanks for coming on welcome tells you and your mom - yeah I'm sure it already does all right guys thank you folks that's gonna do it for tonight's game watch we hope you'll join us again next week when we revisit the 2004 Notre Dame victory over Michigan until then for Shane Walton I'm Jack Nolan thanks so much for watching and for Isaiah - and as always go Irish you
