[Applause] hey guys welcome back on the channel in a previous video I showed you guys me sneaking out to go by this Harbor Freight 12,000 pound winch got a really good sale or at least what I thought was a good sale I think you can actually get them for that price pretty reason to pretty often I think I paid to 270 for it sounds right anyway so we're getting around to making a hitch set up set up for it now so it's gonna have a play of bolts to a receiver hitch to slide into the hitch of your truck and then some d-rings to where you could just change it to a tree or to a trailer or whatever you needed to chain it to to pull something whichever way you need it so we're gonna try and make this thing as small as possible so we can make it as light as possible right now the base of this winch is measuring 11 and 3/8 I figure I'll add 2 inches onto that we can have an inch hanging out each side for just four so we have a little bit of bulk to it and a place to weld some handles so we'll be able to carry this thing also we'll have to have room for I want to mount d-rings the winch is upside down right now obviously but I want to mount d-rings on it on both sides right about here and we'll also need a place to weld a bracket to hold our fairlead so anyway 11 and 3/8 well add two inches and we'll cut that off for seat you [Applause] [Music] beautiful alright now that we got our stock cut it's a lay out time we're gonna lay out our bolt pattern for the winch to bolt to and then on the sides here I said I was gonna have a receiver hitch so this will be able to this is gonna have a peg sticking out of the back of it about four six inches something like that and but I don't want to have it sticking down here I'm gonna actually notch this and that way the hitch will well grate here and come out up through here and that way it won't be sticking out the bottom too far but the receiver hitch is taller than this is then this is tall so that it cause it to sit like this and weeble wobble so I'll make piece of I don't know quarter inch or 8 inch side plates here that'll elevate it so that it sits flat doesn't weeble wobble on you and that'll also give us strength by connecting these webs so that the thing doesn't want to bend or twist that'll make this piece very rigid so let's lay this thing out why just paint okay finally got the stinking can to work tip was clogged up can't win for losing with these stinking paint cans anyway give that a second to dry and we'll scribe it out all right now our intersections should be our bolt hole spacing and center punch those to the drill press right so instead of just plunging straight in it's like a half inch drill bit even though we got the drill press that could do it you always start out with if you got one anyway start out with one of these tapered bits it's a real stout bit that just has a fine point on there that'll line up with your Center punch real easy and the bit won't Bend at all when you start putting pressure to it to start your home so it'll keep an accurate location better [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] okay just to confirm we got our bolt spacing right I just threw the plate on here and I got all four bolts started in it so she's locked on there good or at least she will be when I crank it down one thing I kind of thought about as I was drilling these you see the bolt head is gonna run interference here with the side of the C Channel so we might have to notch these just a little bit so the heads can clear or I might get different bolts with socket heads on them so that I use like an allen head to run them down you know honestly a little bit of time with the grinder might even just grind that out enough to where the bolts can fit in there good okay here we have a receiver tube or hitch tube rather that goes into the receiver of the truck or whatever and we don't want that I don't want it like that so it's just making it more bulky and clunky so what I want to do is launch this out so that the hitch will be sticking out of the plate like that so let's use the plasma cutter and cut that out real quick went a little too deep on my cut there at first that'll clean up will weld it up anyway bang we clean that up with the grinder prep everything for welding [Applause] alright I got everything prepped and ground I cut the side plates here to make a web need to also act as feet to keep it from teetering it also took the grinder and went ahead and beveled out this edge for a relief for our bolt heads so we should have no issues there with clearance you [Music] get any better [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] okay we're almost done with it I got to find one more deep ring for the front here so the winch line is gonna go out that way and I'll put one d-ring in the front that way if your snatch blocking you can run your cable out through your snatch block and back and hook to the d-ring in the front and that will give you a place to anchor to these two back here are going to be for if there's no receiver hitch and you need to chain this thing say to a tree or spot on the trailer or something like that and you'll be able to just chain that up with whatever you got and then run your line out oh Jesus it's almost like if I clean my workbench that wouldn't happen the amazing part about all this is I know what all this goes to and it's been there for six or eight months [Music] we're gonna mount the winch temporarily real quick just for a mock up and then we're gonna look and see how we can attach some carry handles for it cuz this thing weighs I don't know 15 pounds or so the winch weighs another 60 probably so it's a it's a to hand carry job unless you're Big Jim or somebody so I'm gonna try and mock up the winch so I can get some measurements to put a couple handles on it yeah she's got some girth to her now who in the interest of keeping this thing as light as possible now I was thinking about bending up some conduit that way kind of it's nice and lightened and if it's bent nice it'll still still be pretty strong once it's welded on there okay we got a fairly brackets cut ready to tack on alright here's my fairlead setup and this is just mocked up here nothing's tightened up but this may end up being problematic in the future my tolerances were pretty tight here I wanted this d-ring on the front for double blockin or snatch block and whatever you want to call it so when you run a double line setup you need a good anchor point and one right close to the winch is nice because you could run it all the way in if you needed to but the fairlead might be a little bit high and when I'm lining out there might be too much pressure on this bottom roller so we'll have to see how that all goes you know if it bends it or breaks it off of there it's not the end of the world you don't have to have a fairlead to run your winch you just got to pay attention to where your lines spool and and make sure you're not tearing it up on anything so I mean I like it for now but we'll just see if the geometry works out once we're in the real-world application [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so I come up with something cool and outside the box here I think for a lifting strap instead of making metal handles which weigh a lot and can get in the way or get bent or whatever I found this old pretty thick lifting strap that I had that was kind of frayed and beat up so probably best they take it out of service anyway and I'm gonna make this into the handles and this feels good in the hand should be easier to carry and you know they can't get distorted or broken or anything they'll just push out of the way if anything was to contact them so and also if you needed to give it these are kind of gonna loop up over the winch motor so if you needed to get it any of the connections or anything you know these would be in the way but since they're you know made out of nylon you could just push them and bend them wherever you need them so you don't want to drill through this stuff because it would just snarl up your drill bit so the best thing to do is uh cut everything with heat so to heat up this hold knife slice the straps right through and take a pic here heat it up and stab the bolt holes in it and that way to the strap won't fray or anything as well right that stuff dries pretty quick after you melt it and you just slide your bolts through there they're in there good and I mean it would take a heck of a lot of pressure to be able to rip this strap off of off of that bolt I think you'd actually probably break the bolt snug still that's right it'll Rhydian there we go just the clamping force from these two quarter-inch 20 bolts alone was it's gonna make an astronomical connection you'd be able to pull some serious stuff actually with these handles but anyway not they're not their intention at all but I just thought it was a cool outside the box kind of different idea right it's the next day the paint has dried everything looks great I really like this krylon tough coat acrylic enamel this stuff does great dries really quick makes a nice smooth finish it goes on more like automotive paint and rust-oleum or something I don't know I'm not not sponsored by them or anything but hey if they want to I'll take it Benjamin finger alright Harbor Freight provides this hook with the winch and I don't know it's probably fine but I have a nice Crosby hook here that I got from the get in spot so that'll look a lot better on there it's nicer you can grab it with your hand and really pull it you can get around a lot bigger stuff the retainers a lot more stout so I don't have a pin for it though thinking we can use this one for now we'll get a better one eventually I know these are supposed to have roll pins and like I said this isn't the right pin it's just temporary and in the words of watch West work who told me he stole it from red green it's only temporary unless it works all right she's bolted on there oh man throws back out with that thing all right let's get these straps on here looks tough I'll tell you that so the straps I only melted uh I only cut and prepped one end here cuz I didn't know how big a loop I'd need to get around this thing until uh so I had to bolt the Dillion so let's go ahead and bolt this on though so I want to make them tall enough to where you're comfortable getting your hands under there but I don't want to make them so tall that they're just like ridiculous and in the way so probably have to mount up all these connections and everything to just the control box is gonna be on top of here you know I don't I can't cut these until I know what that stuffs at so I guess we'll mark that up now all right now with everything mocked up here I think I can get a good handle on where these handles need to come up to handle on the handles anyway I'm gonna run them to the arch is just about flush for the top of that box that way everything is uh consistent that's plenty of room to get your hands under there and not so much room that it's gonna give you all this slack to be wandering all over the place so I'll mark that cut these and make the same for the other side and we'll be done [Music] [Music] now I'm gonna wire permanent connections onto the truck and the trailer for this thing but I don't have the stuff to do it yet so until then we're gonna properly tension our new cable with the jump pack okay I've hooked the cable to something pretty sturdy here but what I've done when I hooked it I hooked it on to something that can spin and this is a this big hooks of swivel so when you start tensioning a new cable it's gonna want to naturally start it's gonna have some twists in it that's gonna come out you know just like an extension cord if you pull an extension cord real tight it'll actually want to twist around a little bit so you put it on something that'll swivel that way you can get the kinks out of the cable and it'll spool up on the drum a heck of a lot nicer [Music] [Music] so what I'm doing is I'm sucking this in I'm keeping the cable tight up against the last spool that way it winds up a real nice tight and it doesn't damage the cable ideally you do this every time you're using it but in the real world that doesn't happen we did really good on our guessing game with the fairleads looks like I got that thing just about perfect height it's not touching either roller right now under a pretty straight pull [Music] [Music] and [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] oh yeah I bought a new beater truck she followed me on the Instagram you'd already know that though all right I got it all wound up good you can see I let the last couple wraps on there get a little wild because hey I couldn't control it because the Anchor Point was so close and B it just doesn't matter because no matter what you're doing with this you're gonna pull it out more than a couple wraps so the last couple don't really matter unless you have a lot of tension on them but yeah so that's the ultimate Harbor Freight winch build there at least that's how I built mine let me know down in the comments which you'd have done different or how you've done yours in the past if you have one like this let me know what you know about these bad land winches - because everything I can tell from it it seems like it's built pretty well and a lot of you guys in previous videos have said that they're a pretty good bang for the buck so if you're still still watching thanks for hanging in there thanks for catching another video with me and I'll catch you guys on the next one later you [Music]
