blitz store calm there's a bit of everything for everyone it has been nearly nine years since the Surrey channels hit TV series Pawn Stars debuted in July 2009 and fans have learned a lot about the pawning business at the world famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop that Rick Harrison and his father opened in 1989 since it all began with the oldest cast member and patriarch of the Harrison family we'll take a closer look at his life before Fame as well as off-camera in today's video and reveal 10 secrets you didn't know about the old man and Pawn Stars it ain't rice and I sure as hell ain't a cake Richard Benjamin Harrison jr. was born on 4th of March 1941 in Danville Virginia in poor circumstances when he was only one year old his family moved to Lexington North Carolina where he later attended Lexington High School but dropped out during his senior year he was only 14 years old at the time but the family was so poor that he drove a school bus to help his parents out with the five or six bucks he made each week this was huge back then I mean it was the whole world realize none of this stuff was tested I mean they'd landed on the moon as of the Pawn Stars no the Ellis cast member mayli by his nickname the old man but if he thought that it's a fairly new by name you are very wrong Harrison was actually only 38 years old when people started calling him the old man because of his appearance and behavior and it has stuck ever since Corey Harrison has mentioned that his grandmother claimed the family was related to President William Henry Harrison the old man is of Irish descent and has implied that he doesn't really believe in this theory yet he has mentioned that they are distantly related to Benjamin Harrison William Henry's paternal grandson which would technically make the pawn shop owners family descendents of the 9th President of the United States anyone who is watched a few episode of Pawn Stars knows that the old man is a very passionate about automobiles showing an interest in all types of cars cars he is owned or shown interested on the reality show include the mid-sixties V and Z electric an electric car shown to them in Honest Abe which he suggested should be converted into a golf cart in his 1966 imperial crown which he got after 15 years of trying to convince the previous owner to sell it good thing how does it look to you sir looks beautiful like Richard senior himself this car is a true original besides a few modern touches like air conditioning she's restored like a day she rolled off the vehicle was later restored by his son and grandson for his 50th wedding anniversary during the show's first season in addition to that the oldest Harrison also was a 1957 Chevy 150 sedan given to him by the stars of two other history shows American restoration and American Pickers she just skinned interior inside of it there was only five hundred and fourteen of those made he don't turn that car into a lowrider when Harrison senior was 17 he attended a barn dance where he met his future wife Joe Andrew the two married in 1960 but Harrison was caught for stealing a car around the same time given the choice between Jail in the military he decided to join the Navy where he remained for two decades shortly after their wedding Joann had become with the couple's first child daughter sherry who was born with Down syndrome they also had three sons joseph richard rick kevin who co-owns the pawn shop with his father and christopher in february 1962 harrison left the Navy but relisted about a year later in order to receive health care benefits to cover Sherry's medical expenses sadly the Harrison's firstborn died when she was only six years old in 1967 the Navy transferred the old man to San Diego California where he continued to serve in the Navy while his wife got her real estate license and opened her own office two years later in 1973 check this out I got a National Geographic from 1969 moon landing issue nice where were you when they landed I was at work and we were all watching it dad TV's back after Harrison senior was discharged from the US Navy after 20 years he started working part-time in Joanne's office however declining real estate sales cost the Harrisons 1 million dollars and in 1981 their real estate business collapsed and the couple decided to move the family to Las Vegas Nevada with only $5,000 where Harrison and his second oldest son brick opened the gold and silver coin shop in 1986 they relocated the business from the Las Vegas Boulevard to larger building and when the businesses lease expired two years later they opened what will become the world-famous gonna sell or pawn shop at 7:13 Las Vegas Boulevard south in 1989 where's my damn Imperial sold it you what I thought it was just gonna sit there and rot so we sold it for a thousand bucks both of y'all were fixing to get the wrath of God from me because I'm so damn pissed I paint him early doll although the old man likes to sit her sleep in his chair most of the time he has a vast knowledge and after nearly 30 years in the pawn shop business he knows a thing or two about it his rel on the TV show is pretty much to be an old grump and according to Chumlee the old man is actually not that much different in real life though he does enjoy signing autographs and taking pictures with the fans and despite his recent absences from the show the oldest Harrison is reportedly always the first one to arrive at the shop in the warning and has not had a sec day since 99 four things that the golden silver posh I barely get out of hand but in October 2011 Danielle Callahan filed a lawsuit against Rick and the old man for physically assaulting him inside the shop Callahan a Vietnam veteran who walks with a cane got into an argument with the father and son duel before they placed him as he said in a chokehold dragged him through the store and threw him onto the sidewalk Callahan claimed that he was injured in the incident in his cane as well as the rifle he had bought in for appraisal were damaged he will seek in $20,000 in the suit but according to Corey his father and grandfather can't really be blamed for throwing him out of the shop as he became absolutely irate with a weapon in his hand while their reaction to his behavior is absolutely understandable it also makes a lot of sense that they would want to keep this incident a secret in March 2010 the old man and his fellow cast members of Pawn Stars were awarded the key to the city of Las Vegas by Mayor Oscar Goodman in addition to that the show senior has also been awarded the keys to the city of Lexington his hometown by Mayor Clark Newell and 29th of May 2010 and the day was also officially Richard Harrison day he's busting out terms that he thinks are still here today for example he tells me about two months after that on 17th of July 2012 the Clark County Commission declared the day to be post hour / gold silver Pandey and the old man donated $1,000 to the Clark County Museum and Len vo a Senate floor chair used by Senator Patrick and Karen to the museum as part of a display on the senator the chair had been sold to the gold and silver posh up in 2011 on the PAS stars episode take a seat of season for fans of Pawn Stars know that the Rick is the old man's son but as we mentioned earlier he also has two brothers his oldest brother Joseph is a longtime member of the infamous biker gang Vegas MC also known as green nation who have been involved in several shootings and a variety of crimes ranging from gun and drug trafficking to robbery the old man's oldest son Joseph has a big-time rap sheet and has been in jail for both and assaults and has also considered the black sheep of the family who will most likely never appear on the show after leaving school in the junior year of high school the old man started driving a bus when he was 14 and has come a long way since after opening the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop in 1989 along with his son the two started loaning out about three million dollars annually by 2005 which translated to approximately 700,000 dollars in terms of interest income after the Harrison started filming the reality TV show business increased and changed the pawn shop into a more but source attraction which means the old man and his co-stars don't have to and are actually not even allowed to work the counter anymore could you move on well see that's the thing I wouldn't have to call him I could just put a big giant thing on Facebook who wants to help me move this Saturday according to various online sources the old master son Rick now makes upwards of $50,000 per episode and considering the there anywhere from 25 to 50 plus episodes per season the pawnshop co-owner has a salary of over $400,000 per season which adds up to six million dollars in earnings from the TV show alone and the old man that's a similar amount of cash and is estimated to have a net worth of about five million dollars I'm also at the computer and write down what I'm doing well yeah you can tell people you're bored at work what you're doing this is probably the
