The Tesla Semi Is Finally Here!

on today's episode elon musk is declared time magazine person of the year for 2021 [Applause] a new cyber truck prototype appears tesla is three steps closer to selling cars in india the spacex super heavy booster has returned to the launch mount and the tesla semi has entered first production let's get going the president of the united states might be afraid to say elon musk's name these days but time magazine has gone ahead and put elon's face on the cover of their december issue and named him person of the year for 2021 in their feature article time describes elon as a clown genius edgelord visionary industrialist showman a madcap hybrid of thomas edison pt barnum andrew carnegie and watchmen's dr manhattan which is a hell of a lot of comparisons to draw in one sentence but they do a pretty good job of summing up everything this dude is into also i took the liberty of googling andrew carnegie so you don't have to he was a scottish american industrialist and philanthropist who led the expansion of the american steel industry in the late 19th century and became one of the richest americans in history anyways the time article is actually pretty good it's a long read takes about a half hour give or take but they only make a few minor errors and include some really good sources close to elon particularly his brother kimball who at one point in the story says of elon he is a savant when it comes to business but his gift is not empathy with people end quote which kind of gets to the heart of why elon is so misunderstood robert zubrin founder of the mars society who has known elon since 2001 had his own take on musk's drive saying quote he wants eternal glory for doing great deeds and he is an asset to the human race because he defines a great deed as something that is great for humanity and quote time also is able to get some really interesting quotes from elon himself this one toes a bit close to a messiah complex but is still fascinating elon musk said and the next really big thing is to build a self-sustaining city on mars and bring the animals and creatures of earth there sort of like a futuristic noah's ark we'll bring more than two though it's a little weird if there's only two end quote he followed that up to say i'll be surprised if we're not landing on mars within five years i also really like this throwback to the trial by fire days of tesla only three years ago elon's advisor omid afshar remembered the spring of 2018 when he and elon spent most of their nights sleeping on the floor of the model 3 production line afshar says he had a cot but elon was sleeping on the literal floor afshar says about elon he would wake up look at the monitors on the wall and go chase the constraint he would be in there reviewing the system redoing the code himself solving problems bouncing from station to station he will endure the most pain to lead by example and all of us around him really can't complain when we're not working that hard in another quote from kimball musk he addresses the desperation for success that the brothers carried since their first launch of zip2 in the 90s saying i do sometimes wonder if other people have easier times building businesses because all our businesses have been really freaking hard something about our upbringing makes us constantly want to be on the edge though this quote from elon helps to reinforce that he's not concerned about winning any corporate races or maximizing profits he views his work on the grander scale of how it impacts humanity elon says quote if somebody makes better cars than we do and they sell more cars than we do i think that's totally fine our intent with tesla was always that we would serve as an example to the car industry and hope that they also make electric cars so that we can accelerate the transition to sustainable technology and of course we love it when elon shares his vision of the future which at this point has evolved into some kind of techno hybrid between libertarianism and socialism if that makes any sense basically if robots perform all the labor and goods and services are abundant then people only work because they want to elon says there's like plenty for everyone essentially there's not necessarily anyone who's the boss of you i don't mean to suggest chaos but rather that you're not under anyone's thumb so you have the freedom to do whatever you'd like to do provided it does not cause harm to others anyway it's definitely refreshing to see that it's not just people like you and i that are so fascinated by elon musk and his work i'm not saying time magazine is a definitive source on what is or isn't relevant but it is one of those things that just about everyone universally recognizes as being culturally let's get back to the video okay this one's not photoshop this time we've got drone video of a new cybertruck prototype or at least a prototype that we have never seen before of course we realistically have no idea if this is actually a new design for the truck or just some random off cut that somebody decided to take out for a drive around the fremont test track just to mess with us the whole thing was caught on amateur drone footage that i guess just happened to be flying over the tesla factory with the new dji mavic 3 for super crisp image quality finally a leak that wasn't shot on a potato at least either way we can see some very obvious features that are never before seen on a cyber truck there's something weird going on with the roof overhanging the truck bed and the windshield definitely has a curve to it you can't miss the gigantic windshield wiper just sticking straight up along the driver's side edge but elon followed up to say that is not the production wiper of course we shouldn't read too much into this because we have no official context for what we are looking at right now it is still just an interesting little preview of what the real cyber truck proper update we've got a lot of new information since our last one so look forward to that tesla india received approval for three more vehicles in the country according to information from the ministry of road transportation and highways which is controlled by the national government known as center in august tesla received certificates for four of its car models with another three more certificates the company now has seven vehicles approved in india and from what we can tell by vehicles they include different variations of the same model so the model 3 would count as three vehicles because it has three variations and same for the model y but that would only get us up to six at most so we're not sure what the seventh might be the precise tesla variants that received approval have not been specified however there have been sightings of model 3s and model wise on indian roads already so we're pretty sure that's part of the group there has been speculation for the past year that tesla might go as far as opening a new gigafactory in india but there is nothing new that would support that coming true anytime soon the first tesla deliveries to india would be imported from china but that's going to make realizing any profit very difficult for tesla as india takes massive import duties on electric cars tesla has been advocating with the indian government to see those fees reduced by at least 40 percent but officials have stated there is zero chance of a single company like tesla receiving specific incentives for the third time in four months spacex has rolled the first potentially flight worthy super heavy booster towards starbase's orbital launch mount the massive rocket booster was recently spotted out in the open alongside a large crane fitted with a jig solely used to lift boosters it's looking very likely that spacex is preparing to reinstall the b4 on the orbital launch mount this is the first time in three months that spacex have brought their orbital prototype out to the launch mount and this could signal that the rocket is finally ready for its first round of proofing tests over the past couple of weeks we saw the orbital starship s20 going through cryo proofing and static fire testing so hopefully it's finally time for the booster to do the same spacex has been moving unusually slow with the super heavy b4 the structure of the rocket was first built back in july and spacex has been tinkering with it ever since of course this booster is the first of its kind and by far the most complex thing that has been built at starbase so far it also holds up to 29 of the company's raptor engines that we know from elon's recent emails are in short supply right now so it's not surprising that spacex are taking their time with this one they really don't want to blow this up at least not until it's official launch day when it will more than likely blow up but that's science and elon has been telling people that he expects that launch to happen as early as next month so if that's going to happen then we are going to be seeing a lot of activity with this booster over the next few weeks including a massive static fire test that will be unprecedented in the aerospace industry it is going to be so cool in yet another new drone video we get our best view yet of the tesla semi being tested at giga nevada this comes along with news that there is very limited production of the semi happening right now at the giga nevada site this is almost certainly the first round of deliveries that are going to be used by pepsico pepsi has noted that they expect to receive 15 units of the tesla semi by the end of this year and we reported just last week that the new mega charger stations for the electric transport had just been approved for installation at a pepsi facility in california the real standout from this video is that turning radius obviously there's no trailer attached yet but the cab section of the semi can make some insanely tight turns for something of that size when you watch it turn around at the end of the road you think for sure it's not going to make it around but then clears the turn easily we also get a really clear view at the end of the standing start acceleration and it's just as smooth as any other electric vehicle these things are going to be an absolute dream on the roads not just for the truck
