marketers had us believing that quality was determined by megapixels and that was myth number one method number two was created by photographers who with good intentions tried to state that quality was determined by any and everything but megapixels and that megapixels don't matter at all well two wrong myths don't make a right and in this video we're going to explain how the truth behind megapixels is really somewhere in between oh and we're going to do this all in under two minutes because this is photography in - make no mistake megapixels do indeed play a role in overall camera and sensor quality but is it a leading role well the answer to that depends on the usage megapixels determine how much potential detail a camera sensor can capture and the key word here being potential because the amount of visible detail also is going to depend on the lens the filter your camera settings and so forth but to oversimplify let's just say that the more megapixels the more detail that can potentially be captured so when do megapixels matter well megapixel resolution becomes a factor when enlarging or performing extreme crops for example detail is more visible when blown up to a 20 by 30 than it is at a 4x6 print higher megapixel resolution that means the more crisp the detail is going to be in these enlargements in addition megapixels also matter when it comes to extreme cropping for example if you have a 40 megapixel image well you can crop 80% of that image and still have plenty of detail left for print so the megapixels play a role in quality well absolutely it does but is it a role that matters to your individual uses now that is really the true question because for the vast majority of photographers 10 to 20 megapixels is more than sufficient and that's the amount of megapixels that comes standard and really virtually any camera you can print enlarge to virtually any size with great results so long as you view the images at an appropriate viewing distance because of this - most photographers other quality factors are going to play a bigger role in choosing your camera since most cameras today have more than enough megapixel resolution for most uses so that means that low-light performance and sensor size and frames per second and available lenses and dynamic range and other factors are going to play a bigger role in image quality than megapixels but for an advertising or fashion photographers shooting head to toe portraits ultra-high resolution sensors means having the ability to take a file directly to a ginormous print advertisement or to be able to make extreme crops while still retaining enough detail for print resolution just imagine a fashion photographer taking a single full-length portrait and then being able to create printable crops focusing on the subjects facial expressions dress wrist neck jewelry shoes eyes all from one single shot for this photographer megapixel can save an incredible amount of time in production so megapixels are indeed a component of sensor quality but in the end whether megapixels are going to matter to you is really going to depend on your intended use and workflow now that concludes this episode of Photography & 2 and we'll see you all in the next video you
