The Qur'an, Science and the Last Day - Munir El-Kassem

his topic one uh promises to be equally invigorating and certainly near and dear to many of us is science and religion in Islam the famous Greek philosopher Aristotle tells us that man mankind was designed to know and interestingly when you go deeper into Greek history it tells you that within the air within your language the word hu means all knowledge an M is highest of organic life today as we go deeper into this conference we can see the validity of this statement not very long ago many of you might have seen this very very interesting article on Newsweek science finds God a real literary mind would probably say well where was God before he was always here but throughout history scientists or science and religion has been antagonistic towards each other the more we read now we realize that there is much more collaboration much more recognition much much coming together of scientists into the fold of religion and certainly in Islam if you get a chance to read that article one of the things that you will get out of it is Islam on Islamic scholars have been recognized for their work in science over the last years the next speaker dr. Mooney Wilkinson was born in Beirut Lebanon in 1955 he was educated at a mass moccasin Islamic Institute where the foundation of his Islamic knowledge was established he was a tough student to be admitted in the pre medicine program at the American University of Beirut following his migration to Canada he continued his studies at the University of Western Ontario on earn a master's degree in medical genetics there after joining the University of Toronto to graduate as a dental surgeon in 1986 since his arrival in Canada in 1976 dr. al Kassim has been very actively involved in Islamic Dawa he has visited a large number of Muslim communities across Canada and in the United States he has also participated in interfaith dialogue and appeared in numerous radio and television programs his audio and videotapes of various Islamic issues have been widely distributed one of it was recently shown in the local TV station in many and in many countries in addition to his book fasting in Islam three others are ready for the press these are mothers of believers wives of Prophet Mohammed that's wonderfully a matter of life and death and when the call to prayer is made of Friday which is a collection of Friday sermons dr. brought back to guidance by any force on the face of this earth i were witness that there is no deity to be worshipped but allah and i bear witness that muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is his servant and his last messenger sent as a true guidance to mankind so that we could follow his example at all times all places and under all circumstances my dear brothers and sisters in Islam assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh before I start discussing the topic assigned to me I again praise allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and i thank him for giving my wife and myself the opportunity to be with you for the third year in a row where I have discovered that every time we go back home we feel a certain kind of spirituality that we did not have before coming and for this we thank allah subhanahu wata'ala and we hope that we will have similar opportunities to exchange islamic knowledge and enlarge our base of brotherhood and sisterhood may allah subhanho wa taala bless all of you who have come to share such knowledge and may allah subhanaw taala help us to benefit from this knowledge i mean your oberon ameen the topic is religion and science and when we find the article and between two words we understand that these are two separate entities that are different from each other and we need to draw the relationship between the two indeed as we heard from the other brothers who spoke and from the host of this evenings proceedings people have come to look at religion and science as separate things totally different from each other always at conflict with each other and because of this we need to understand the reason why well it goes to the times in medieval Europe when there was a firm understanding that the sciences of nature and the church cannot be united according to Christian theology and this is known to everybody Adam eight from the tree of knowledge and because of that sin knowledge as is sought from nature becomes forbidden that it is not really spiritually accepted to seek such a knowledge and because of this church remained here and science went ahead in a different direction and people who pursued science where at times persecuted and they were looked upon as people of evil spirits and many of them were executed like Galileo when he dared to come forward and say that the earth was round it was an act that was unacceptable to the people of the church so the journey continued the church went this way science went that way and we kept talking about religion and science as to things that cannot be conciliated with each other when we thought from an Islamic perspective we have to say that many Muslims had fallen in the trap had fallen in the trap of finding that our religion and this is the scenario our religion is the accused entity in the courts of civilization and science is used as the evidence either for or against religion so if science brings forward a piece of information that supports religion then we say alhamdulillah this is another proof that our religion is the true religion if science happens to bring a piece of information that is contradictory to what we find in our Islam we look suspicious we look scared we feel insecure and we start to ask questions like what happened when the story of cloning unsurfaced and people Muslims started to say but how can we defend Islam I have to say before I continue any further that Islam is not the accused Islam does not stand in the court of anybody and if we talk about religion and science and we use these two terms for the sake of understanding we say that we are not talking from the perspective that Islam is the accused and science will prove it today because Islam doesn't need to be proven as a matter of fact Islam either proves science or disapproves of science Islam is the source of knowledge that can show if science had really made the right discovery or if science made the wrong discovery so this is number one in my presentation this evening we are not going to prove Islam with science it's the other way around and we have to say that Islam has no fear or any sense of insecurity that people will go ahead as we heard from our Maulana Sadiq Nasser that our Muslim scientists sought knowledge because they wanted to know allah subhana wa ta'ala more and get closer to a better understanding of the creation of allah subhana wa taala like we find in the books of history names like Ivan Cena like our Ozzy and people who really were so well rounded that when we look at them they were medical doctors they were astronomers they were mathematicians they were scholars of Sharia because they possessed knowledge as an entity because all the pieces of knowledge were in harmony they were together to create that individual that that certainly those who have the most fear of Allah subhana WA Ta'ala are those who possess the knowledge that was made available to them by Allah Subhanahu WA Ta'ala so there's no fear to go and certain things that will tell us that the day of judgment is approaching people ask prophet muhammad sallallahu wasallam to tell them when will the hour strike when will it take place and we all know the account when gibreel alayhis-salam visited the muslims at the time of prophet muhammad sallallahoalyhiwasallam and he appear as a human being dressed in very white clothes and he came and he sat to the halacha of Prophet Muhammad sallallahu wasallam and started to ask him about Islam and SN and Amman and then prophet muhammad sallallahu wasallam will answer him and after every answer gibreel will say Sabich they are a soul Allah verily you have told the truth and then the Companions were astonished how could someone who is asking a question will say you have told it to how did he know that it was the truth and then after that prophet mohammed salah salem explained to them after the departure of gibreel that it was gibreel who came to teach them the elements of their Deen and among muhammad sallallahu wasallam told us that there are minor signs and there are major signs now the minor signs some of the scholars told us that all of them came to pass we have witnessed all of the minor signs now the concern of this presentation is about some of the 10 major signs of the approach of the hour 5 of those 10 seemed to be cosmic in nature that they are related to certain happenings that are related to the cosmos certain universal happenings that will take place that will tell us that the hour is approaching and one of them is that the Sun will appear from the West instead of the east we have known that for years and years and years and we were told that the Sun will appear from the West as a sign that the hour is approaching now again I remind myself and I remind my sisters and brothers that whatever I will mention from science that people really put as as as V the absolute truth when we know it is not but what we know from science is the following what is happening is that the earth has been rotating around its axis since the creation of the universe in the beginning our earth used to complete one complete circle around its axis in 4 hours used to be very fast and it has been slowing down since then now it completes one rotation around its axis in 23 hours 56 minutes and 4 seconds and scientists know that the speed is going to diminish the earth is going to slow down up to a point where it will not be able to support any more decrease in its speed when that will happen the earth will behave like a spring that you rotate in a certain direction up to a certain point when you cannot really wind it any further in that direction then if you leave it what will happen it will start to rotate in the opposite direction and the earth is going to do that that's what scientists tell us that the earth is going to slow and slow and slow up to a point where it can not because of its mass slowed any further then it will stop briefly and will start to rotate in a clockwise fashion and guess what will happen when that takes place the Sun will appear from the West and the hadith related through the authority of Hawaii Feb newly a man from Prophet came and then two nights will appear in a row and then after that the Sun will appear again but this time it will come from the West instead of the East this is and please forgive me if I move fast because of the amount of information in this presentation the second major sign among the ten signs is that the earth we'll be engulfed with smoke for 40 days and nights and there is a surah in al expecting it around the year 2000 126 and that they know exactly in what direction it is moving and here in the United States they are working day and night trying with their technology to build crafts that will intercept such a meteorite hoping that they can divert its path away from the earth whether they are successful or not whether this meteorite is what is mentioned or referred to in the or an we don't give ourselves the freedom to assert one way or the other but we say that we know that this is a possibility that something may hit our earth that can cause such a commotion in the form of smoke that people may be affected and as the surah mentions that it will be a brief torment and the commotions after which the people will recover briefly before the day of judgement will take place so we leave it at that and then we move to the third major sign and that is the splitting of the moon in half it is Asahi account a true account mentioned in sahih al-bukhari that at the time of prophet muhammad sallallahoalyhiwasallam the moon did split in half whether it was a scientific occurrence or not is immaterial because Allah subhana WA Ta'ala who creates the information of science that people discover does not need the causes that are known in science to make something happen so if the moon has to split we need no scientific causes because Allah subhana WA Ta'ala is the creator of the cause-and-effect and the cause and effect does not control Allah but Allah controls the cause and effect so at the time of Prophet Muhammad sallallahu wasallam there was no known scientific cause but the moon did split in half as reported by Al Bukhari now science today says that that speed of rotation of the earth plus the speed of rotation of the moon makes a fixed entity which means that if the earth will slow down the moon will speed up because the Sun is always a fixed number so as the earth will slow down in its rotation the moon has to speed up in its rotation both both around its axis and around the earth and as the moon will speed up around the slowing down earth it will come closer and closer to the earth and as it will come closer to the earth that gravitational force of the earth will be such that it will exert its influence on both halves of the moon that which is directly facing the earth and that which is away from the earth and when it reaches a certain point that the gravity will affect both halves it will split those halves into two and the moon will split in half this is what science tells us and another thing that will cause the earth also to split is that as the moon will speed up we know that there is the centripetal force and centrifugal force I don't want to go to the depth of that that will cause the elements of the moon to separate
