We are attracted to people with whom we share similar thoughts. It's all in the ether. From there, what makes a friend stick, to me, is their reliability to have my back and be open and nonjudgmental. It also helps if we laugh a lot when we are together.
Makes sense why I only have one friend. I'm independent enough that I only need one who's sufficient enough to play all four roles. And add to that my emotional capacity which is 20% of the average human bean.
