there is a minecraft mod so well known that it's been around for almost as long as the game itself a mod so infamous that it completely changed the way people played minecraft a mod so strong that it ruined the fundamental challenges of the game a mod so popular that has well over 10 million downloads across the internet a mod so notorious that it forced servers to develop plugins to just try to stop it and a mod so infamous that it could single-handedly bring a server to its knees so what is this mod and why was it so powerful why is it so infamous well today i'm going to be telling you about the story of the x-ray mod we'll be covering the history behind its creation as not only a mod but as a resource pack and how it forever changed the game we played today so let's begin the year is 2011 january specifically minecraft is still in early beta rising in popularity but far from the worldwide phenomenon it would later become survival multiplayer was still a relatively new concept at this time but many communities and servers had begun popping up enter team avolition a group of minecraft griefers who gained lots of attention with their various griefing videos throughout the years to 2011-2013 team evolution were early pioneers of minecraft griefing putting quite the reputation and following on their youtube channel but they weren't just your average run-of-the-mill griefers they had experience in coding and were able to create their own custom game modifications to suit their griefing demands at the time it was quite rare to see such a knowledgeable group and due to the fact that minecraft was nowhere near as secure or refined many of these hacks and game modifications worked extremely well anyways i was fortunate enough to get into contact with chris otherwise known as siren full a prominent member of the infamous griefing group a few months back when i made my video on hack clients siren 4 was primarily responsible for development of their custom hacked client reliant now i've gone into detail more on the client and features in another video so that won't be my focus here today but rather i want to tell you about a little resource pack siren full created before the team began uploading griefing videos to youtube they played survival normally on a public server one day one of the members of the group decided to go mining but couldn't find diamonds to make a pick so went to storm surge's stash and took some for reference storm surge was the man behind the camera recording and uploading all their griefing videos to the team evolution youtube channel after his diamonds were taken he supposedly had a mild freak out in ventrilo which was basically discord of 2011. the rest of the group found storm's reaction quite amusing deciding to steal storm's diamonds again storm then decided to hide his valuable's chest in an attempt to keep his diamonds safe but another member of the group named jade managed to miraculously find them stealing the diamonds once more keep in mind this was before chest and base protection plugins had come to fruition anyways this seemed to be the last straw as storm once again hit his chest and this time nobody could find them however they hadn't given up on finding the chest yet siren 4 decided to make a custom texture pack which would make all other block textures transparent so you could see where storm's chests were hidden sound familiar now at first this resource pack didn't work as in older versions of the game when a block was surrounded on all four sides by other blocks it wouldn't be rendered in a feature added as a performance optimization so alongside the texture pack siren full also patched the game's code so that it would render in chess even when they were covered by blocks on all four sides and thus the first ever version of x-ray was born siren 4 would originally refer to the mod as jadevision nicknamed after the team member jade who was skilled at finding hidden chess he would use the texture pack to find storm's hidden chests and take more diamonds but storm upon being told how they were taken found it hilarious from then on the team would go back to griefing and you can frequently see them using x-ray in their videos also referred to as wallhack as early as january of 2011. visually their wallhack looks slightly different to what would become well known a few years later but the core features are undeniably there proud of their work they would post a video boasting about how many resources they had x-rayed on an smp server which for the time was a crazy sight to behold utilizing just their wallhack chi alone they were able to bring many servers to their knees it was so powerful especially at the time when nobody even knew what x-ray was eventually they improved its functionality adding a feature which allowed you to toggle on a version of wall hack which just showed chest whenever they pleased and not too long after they would add even more features such as fulbright and even a feature which made the name above your head invisible as if they were sneaking all the time eventually sirenfall would develop their reliant hacked client with multiple other modules and features but that's a story for another video so let's move on now with team avo demonstrating just how strong x-ray could be it wasn't long until the public wanted to get their hands on it but before we get into that we recently hit 200k subs and to celebrate i'm going to be doing a 200k special live stream on youtube on my server og network roughly 24 hours after the video goes live so be sure to drop by oh and subscribe if you haven't already anyways i'm no expert at modding or coding but because the mod was quite easy to create it wasn't long until dozens of versions of x-ray began to pop up all over the internet especially on the minecraft forums one of the earliest versions of x-ray posted on the forums that i could find was created by the franz way on january the 25th 2011. this x-ray mod was different to team a votes displaying all ores very similar to x-ray modes of today this mod is also likely one of the first that allowed you to hit the x-key to toggle x-ray vision on and off as well as letting you configure what blocks would be shown or hidden at first people thought the mod was quite cool i mean who wouldn't diamonds were much harder to get back then due to lack of sprinting enchantments and more but it wasn't long until they started to realize how devastating the mod would be for smps fortunately at the time the mod was kind of confusing to install requiring a mod loader and wasn't that well known so it didn't see much use however the resource pack was really easy to install and would see wide usage really ruining many s p servers as we entered 2012 development kicked up even more it seemed that everyone wanted to have a crack at making the mod players introduced more features such as a cave finder which would allow you to see what caves look like from above in-game guys huds fulbright and more slowly but steadily public opinion began to shift and players began to despise the mod you see as the game became more popular an increasing number of players would find and utilize the mod to ruin multiplayer servers and there was absolutely nothing the server owners could do to stop them such a simple mod but so powerful as it completely broke the fundamentals of the game minecraft is a game of resource gathering but when the game's many resources are easily obtainable at the click of a button it completely ruins its balance especially on multiplayer servers players would spend hours gathering materials and constructing underground bases only for them to be found and pillaged in mere minutes by x-rayers it was incredibly demotivating to know that there was no true way to protect your base or items but instead of simply giving up players began adapting knowing that their chess and bases were never safe early s p players began to use tricks to hide from x-ray you see many of the x-ray mods still displayed lava when turned on players would use this to their advantage covering their underground bases or chess and lava so from an x-ray's point of view above it just looked like a random underground lava pool however that trick would only work so well as many x-ray mods had separate chess finders which only displayed chess another trick players used were trap chess since most of the x-ray mods were created by random players they were unrefined and ignored many of minecraft's features one such block a lot of the older mods overlooked were trapped chess which wouldn't show up when using chest finder however many of the mods were configurable and it didn't take too much extra effort to enable trapped chess and get back to griefing business the mod just seemed unbeatable and if you thought its users were limited to smps well you're wrong even on mini-game servers the mod was still extremely useful let's use survival games as our example here as it was one of the most popular mini-games in 2012. imagine you are playing survival games on the original survival games map which is very bushy and dense with trees and foliage as most survival games maps were this means that vision is very restricted and players are often closer to each other than they realize well now completely remove all that foliage trees and any other obstructions and look how much you can see i hope you get my point here the x-ray mod was not only powerful because of the resources you could get from it but it was simply so strong because of the enhanced vision it provided this vision gave players a massive advantage having the ability to see other players far before they would even realize somebody was nearby not all hope was lost yet though around this time a plugin called obfuscater was being developed the plugin basically modified the data that a server sent to clients allowing service to hide blocks of their choice from x-rays basically if you tried to use an x-ray on a server which was using object skater it would look something like this keep in mind everything here is purely visual none of these ozoblocks actually exist anyways this plugin worked well against people trying to x-ray for ores but unfortunately it didn't really help against chess finders which still allowed x-rays to find and loot players chess underground nevertheless the plug-in has been further developed and updated over the past few years and is still around today other plugins have also been developed providing solutions for service to deal with x-rays but alas none of these anti-x-ray plug-ins deal with the primary advantage x-ray gives to players and that is the fact that even when lacking the ability to find ores on the ground you can still see players chess and bases underground and through walls i doubt there will ever be a plug-in that completely disables x-ray but who knows let's talk about current day now x-ray is still ever present and continues to cause issues on servers trust me i would know it's more uncommon to see people using the mod standalone though as almost every single hacked client has x-ray built into it these days hacked clients have also built upon x-ray adding esps visible through walls that highlight different chest types or other blocks of interest as specified by the player and let's not forget the x-ray resource pack in fact as of making this video the most downloaded resource pack of all time on curseforge with 15.5 million downloads total is x-ray ultimate an updated version of the original x-ray resource pack it's likely that this is the most downloaded minecraft resource pack of all time and if that doesn't prove just how influential and infamous x-ray has been then i don't know what does likewise on curseforge there are dozens of versions of the mod some having upwards of 2 million downloads and many others still accumulating impressive figures and this doesn't even include the likely hundreds of other versions of the mod as well as hacked clients scattered across the internet in fact i'm confident enough in saying that it's the most used and most downloaded minecraft hack of all time and while it certainly isn't healthy for the game i think its backstory and infamy is pretty cool i hope you enjoyed the video let me know if you would like to see other videos where i talk about the story behind more niche minecraft aspects be sure to subscribe and join the discord links are in the
