The Most Disappointing Feature in FFXIV...

foreign for years now Final Fantasy 14 has been disappointing me patch after patch I've had to watch as the game's potential has gone to waste whittling away my hopes and dreams but I'm not talking about the game's story The raids the crafting the fishing the side quests the fates the tomes the gear Criterion bosier Eureka died I'm no no no none of that I'm not talking about any of that I well I like most of it but something I like the game no there's one thing that greats me to know and every single patch oh wait my favorite part it's we're finally at it uh the duties that can be recorded have changed of course um heidelin still there uh feistos still there but now instead of a Goliath uh we can record you frozen a what's the point you know what you do you know what you do tell them to stop you use anything use marilla's action OBS cord it with your phone just hold it up to the monitor you know it's probably better that's right the duty recorder this feature was implemented back in patch 4.2 and was advertised as a means of saving an entire instance worth of gameplay myself and many others were immediately intrigued as content creators it had an adjustable camera and pause features so we might be able to use it to better highlight attack animations and aoes strategies and positioning using it for guides would have been great turn off the UI record a few duties go to town in the editing Department not to mention others might be able to use it as a means of capturing some really cool screenshots or gameplay footage in general it was all our dreams come true within the game itself until it wasn't upon its release a lot of us immediately lost hope that the feature would ever be useful for all the things we had envisioned for it and its value was almost duties within the duty recorder menu on this menu you must first tick the duty recorder option to enabled once that is done you'll need to meet the following criteria to begin recording first make your own party and fill it up this is a minor drawback you know requiring a fully pre-made party but okay Mark that as done once you and your party are in the duty you'll then need to initiate a record ready check using the command slash record ready this checks to make sure everyone in the party is okay with being recorded then begins a countdown for pulling the boss this is fine also you know just so you don't record people who don't want to be recorded I mean we do it for YouTube videos from time to time but you know it says you get it right it makes logical sense especially in the party finder so all right whatever so once you record the instance it's then saved in the duty recorder menu which can only be viewed from the in this again is functionally fine it kind of works almost like a g pose style Replay for the instance allowing you to click party members pets and enemies and move the camera around pause skip around the VA do whatever you need to to get what you need out of it up until now it sounds kinda fine even with a few drawbacks the replay itself is a bit Jank you know for example you can't freely go through the replay itself you know like you can't click around like a YouTube video or something like that you basically have to choose to play it from the start of each chapter and each chapter is realistically every time a countdown is initiated or a boss is pulled you also can't free cam which would have been great for getting some nice camera angles of things so you know there's a lot of these types of restrictions on it and actually because the game isn't recording a video that's probably why there's these kind of restrictions what the game is actually doing is it's parsing all of the actions taken within the instance and then just replaying them by memory it even saves a data file in your Final Fantasy 14 folder and requires at least 210 megabytes on your hard drive to actually use the function so why is this feature absolutely dead and useless to most players and content creators well it's the final restriction that I skipped over that makes it this way you must enter an eligible Duty the list of eligible duties is absolutely laughable usually at best being some sort of trial maybe an old Savage raid and a 24-man and that's usually it's been particularly less useful in end Walker seriously when it came out in patch 4.2 you could only use it in the Jade stowa AKA biako's normal and extreme Encounters in patch 6.4 the most recent patch years after the feature was implemented and has constantly been updated with new instances you can only use it in a bisso's eighth Circle Savage euphrosinee and the mother Crystal on the normal difficulty seriously that's the previous tears final Savage encounter only one you can't do five six and seven only eight and only on Savage the most recent 24 man which okay that to be fair kind of makes sense and the normal mode from the second trial in end Walkers base release I can't even use it on golbiz or Barbary or any of the newer stuff so realistically what we have here is a feature that while not perfect could at least be functional and more used but is completely held back by what it is eligible to be used for seriously do you think I'm gonna go back to p8s now after 9 10 11 and 12 are out and try to do some sort of fancy thing heck I'm pretty sure eighth Circle Savage wasn't even added until 6.3 well after I would have needed it because I'm pretty sure that as fidelos's final encounter on Savage was the one that was in 6.2 and now I'm sure there are technical reasons and something in the game's code that makes it so it can only be these particular instances why do we have to wait for you frozen a and by the way you frozen a wasn't one of them in 6.3 it was still a Goliath that was a change in 6.4 so again it's just that the instances that get filtered into it are just so old that that like yeah I guess you could still do something fun with them but the the functionality is just so limited I don't even really know what else to say about it I'd be okay with the jankiness if I could at least use it in more than three encounters and to be fair I don't well I would love for it to be usable absolutely in any instance I could at least understand if it was like the whole current normal mode here the whole current Savage mode here and the most recent extreme like if they wanted to limit it to high-end stuff you know I would still get it and even then they probably wouldn't ever do ultimates in there though of course I would love that as well but you you see what I'm saying right like I don't really need to explain this anymore why this feature has just every single patch note I have the same reaction oh great look what's updated can't wait to never use that in fact the only time I've ever used it was to make this video and thank you to my twitch chat for joining along and even deliberately seeing the enrage on the second boss of you frozen a yes there's an actual enrage to that encounter in case you weren't reading the debuffs under the boss names so why am I making this video I don't know it's not like square is going to change it I don't even think it's something they could change I think it's the way it was built from the ground up that make it so it has to be this way but if I'm gonna share any immense disappointment about Final Fantasy 14 everyone has all sorts of things to be disappointed about or complaining about but I have been loving Final Fantasy 14 even through its slumps and Peaks and all that stuff I almost always find something I enjoy doing but this this one thing this one thing is my permanent disappointment and every patch note now you're gonna be reading it and you're gonna see the duty recorder and you're gonna know about the wasted potential although let's be honest you probably just watched my YouTube video on the patch notes skip that part and don't care but hey at least
