Honestly, I'm glad someone brought up Mad Men here because I unironically think Matthew Weiner, the guy behind Mad Men, would have been a perfect alternate show-runner for GoT.
Has Weiner done any show similar to GoT as in a similar genre? No. He's obviously talented/quality given that he created Mad Men and worked on the Sopranos. But more to the point, there are a few similarities between Mad Men and GoT in that they're both character-driven shows where the characters react to the world around them instead of characters simply changing the world because they're our main characters, as is usual in your standard Hollywood fare (and late seasons GoT). Weiner also managed to give every character on Mad Men a satisfactory ending. Point being, the dude knows the characters he's writing about, is consistent and empathetic about them, similar to how GRRM himself is, and has enough writing chops to see them through a plausible character arc. Plus, not much really ever happened on Mad Men, compared to GoT at least. Its not really an action packed show but that doesn't stop Mad Men from being interesting, so imagine what Matt Weiner could do with something like GoT?
All the above is why if I were a dictator, I would force Matthew Weiner to showrun the GoT remake.
