The Mass for November 14th & 15th

um uh [Music] um [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] uh [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] so [Music] hmm [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] um good evening everyone today we celebrate the 33rd sunday in ordinary time we welcome any guests who may be joining us for worship our president will be father chris assisted by deacon cliff please join in the singing of jesus our divine companion which could be found on page four in the bulletin please stand jesus our divine companion by your lowly human birth you have come to join all workers of the earth [Music] [Applause] [Music] and your courage you have taught us work is good [Music] [Music] all [Music] of god you the dwell with us in daily strife heaven broken in the sacrament of life every task however simple fills the soul with grace anew every act of humankindness done in love is done to you jesus help us all to do our best bless us in our daily [Music] good evening everyone it is good that we are here it is good that we have assembled in the presence of our god in the holy tabernacle at his altar and amongst his people the church and so we begin this evening in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you my sisters and brothers we begin in a place the world would not recognize the world would not dare to go we begin by acknowledging our sin and so prepare ourselves to celebrate these most sacred mysteries lord jesus you came to reconcile us to one another and to the father lord have mercy lord jesus you heal the wounds of sin and division christ have mercy lord jesus you intercede for us with your father lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life glory to god in the highest and on earth we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king o god almighty father lord jesus christ holy begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on for you alone are the holy one you alone are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father [Music] let us pray grant us we pray o lord our god the constant gladness of being devoted to you for it is full and lasting happiness to serve with constancy the author of all that is good through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god for ever and ever amen a reading from the book of proverbs when one finds a worthy wife her value is far beyond pearls her husband entrusting his heart to her has an unfailing prize she brings him good and not evil all the days of her life she obtains wool and flax and works with loving hands she puts her hands to the disc staff and her fingers ply the spindle she reaches out her hands to the poor and extends her arms to the needy charm is deceptive and beauty fleeting the woman who fears the lord is to be praised give her a reward for her labors and let her works praise let her works praise her at the city gates the word of the lord [Music] let me who fear the lord [Music] for you shall we the fruit of your handiwork happy shall you be in favor [Music] your wife shall be like a fruitful in the recesses of your home your children like olive plants around your table happy are those [Music] behold thus is the man blessed who fears the lord the lord bless you from zion may you see the prosperity of jerusalem all the days of your life [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the thessalonians concerning times and seasons brothers and sisters you have no need for anything to be written down for you yourselves know very well that the day of the lord will come like a thief at night when people are saying peace and security then sudden disaster comes upon them like labor pains upon a pregnant woman and they will not escape but you brothers and sisters are not in darkness for that day to overtake you like a thief for all of you are children of the light and children of the day we are not of the night or of darkness therefore let us not sleep as the rest do but let us stay alert and sober the word of the lord [Music] hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah [Music] oh lord open our hearts to listen to the words of your son your son hallelujah [Music] hallelujah the lord be with you this is a reading from the holy gospel according to saint matthew jesus told his disciples this parable a man going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them to one he gave five talents to another two to a third one to a third one to each according to his ability and he went away immediately the one who received five talents went on and traded with them and made another five likewise the one who received two made another two but the man who received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and buried his master's money after a long time the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them and the one who had received five talents came forward bringing the additional five he said master you gave me five talents see what i have made five more his master said to him well done my good and faithful servant since you were faithful in small matters i will give you great responsibilities come share your master's joy then the one who had received two talents also came forward and said master you gave me two talents see i have made two more. his master said to him well done my good and faithful servant since you are faithful in small matters i will give you great responsibilities come share your master's joy the one then the one who had received the one talent came forward and said master i knew you were a demanding person harvesting what you did not plant gathering where you did not scatter so out of fear i went off and buried your talent in the ground here it is back his master said to him in reply you wicked lazy servant so you knew that i harvest where i did not plant and gather where i did not scatter should you not then put my money in the bank so i could i could have got it back with interest on my return now then take the talent from him and give it to the one with ten for to everyone who has more will be given and he will grow rich but the one who has not even what he has will be taken away and throw this useless servant into the darkness outside where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth the gospel of the lord first and foremost to all those who are watching now over live stream or will be watching i feel the lord putting on my heart to let you know to remind you to reassure you you are not alone we're here with you we're praying for you we are one church one body amen amen it's hard to hear over the microphone amen it's for you it's called a combat rosary it's made of metal pretty much indestructible unless you really try you can get them online but they originate they're modeled after the rosary that imagine this the rosary that the united states government issued to its soldiers who were catholic for world war one and world war ii i had the privilege the honor of saying mass this past veterans day i told a story about my grandfather albert j mannarino who served in the pacific theater for world war ii he and so many young men boys were shipped shipped halfway across the world and many of them their bones still lie unmarked unclaimed scattered my grandfather was on the island of ayashima not iwo jima but ayashima it's a small island just off of okinawa and as the u.s army and air force prepared to invade okinawa they made camp on ayashima and on ayashima there were pits where they would burn the trash there was nothing else to do so they would burn the trash in these large open pits and my grandfather was put on burning duty he and another young man probably a high school age boy or just a little older my grandfather was on one end of the pit and the young man was on the other and at one point the young man said to my grandfather i keep getting smoke in my eyes can we trade places and my grandfather said sure just a few moments or minutes after that the wind shifted and picked up the flames built upon themselves and engulfed that young man he died i wouldn't be here if he had not traded places with my grandfather why do i tell that story because we wouldn't be here if christ had not traded places with us if he had not literally gone to hell and back so that we might never taste what we deserve sisters and brothers read the second reading again many other places as well in holy scripture right out of christ's mouth don't fear the world don't fear what you see happening in it these are the labor pains but remember what comes after the child i think god is about the renewal of his church i think as a friend of mine his mother said to me chris things have to get bad so that when god intervenes no one else can take credit stay close to him stay close to his mother throw into the pit to burn whatever it is that would have your soul condemned before almighty god sin anger lust pornography unfaithfulness rage judgment self-righteousness throw it into the pit be free come to confession be free approach the altar be free plunge yourselves into the fires of god's love here and now burn with the light of heaven here and now for a world that has been plunged into darkness not just lately but since eden be lights for the world sisters and brothers just recently it was nothing more than a dream i'm not going to claim it was any i am not claiming it was anything more than a dream i probably had too much taco bell that night but i had a dream just maybe two or three weeks ago that it was night and i walked into this little store and half the lights were off everything was a shambles and there was a priest another priest who was there i could i could i could draw a picture of him he was so clear he was ragtag and he had a chipped tooth rough for the wear and the the entire store was full of these young people who were stealing pick-pocketing or arguing over the most superfluous stupid stuff and all the while this little priest was busying himself running around the store grabbing things for me and handing them to me and when i tried to pay him he said go it's already paid for and the the young people were left in the store to squabble so i went and i came upon this church it was this little white frame church the world was still dark and i walked into the church and the deeper and deeper and deeper i went into the church through twists and turns all of a sudden i realized this church couldn't fit inside what i saw out there and the deeper i went into the church it grew until there were thousands of people praying before the eucharist in adoration there were hundreds of young people men and women dressed in religious guard the habits of religious orders i even remember the the young men of the religious orders were barefoot but they were smiling there was one young woman that i i know her name i don't know if she exists or will it was only a dream so maybe she never will but she was praying and i told her i'll pray for you you pray for me she said we i will and when i reached the the deepest part of the church i've been to rome i've been into saint peter's in the vatican and this was more glorious than anything even there pillars of green marble a ceiling of hammered and molded copper and people adoring our lord i think the lord is about the renewal of the church in a way that only he can accomplish stay faithful to him here and now come what may i don't care if we go on lockdown again i promise you i will not stop saying the mass the devil has been trying to separate the people of god from the eucharist for generations not on our watch by the grace of god there have been priests in gulags and concentration camps who have laid on the on the wooden boards of the prison barracks and said mass with a crumb of bread and a thimbleful of wine on their chest they themselves became the altar if it comes to that i promise you i'll do it and that has nothing to do with me and it has everything to do with jesus christ who transcends the troubles of this world the filth of this world he has won be a part of that victory how attend mass when you can pray always even if you yourself become the prayer offer yourself so that everything you do is an offering to god this is not about you or me or even us anymore this is about him and it's always been about him because he is all about us say your rosaries without ceasing i know it can be tedious and even boring until you realize that with every bead every mystery you're reliving re-present in the drama of the life of christ god's about a renewal and if you pray and attend mass and say the rosary you'll have no time to judge there will be no instance to man the barricades on either side have a rosary in your hand always and you can't point at the other be saints this is the time this is the time to draw closer to christ as never before be a part of that renewal and you will tread amongst the flames and never even know they won't touch you jesus is our king a kingdom that knows no end and you are called to be the citizens of that everlasting kingdom do not forfeit that for anything of this world [Applause] amen [Applause] profess what we believe i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth [Music] i believe in one lord jesus christ consubstantial with the father through him all things were made and for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead in the life of the world to come amen having professed our belief we now present our prayers and petitions before the throne of god our heavenly father our response is lord bless your people that pope francis bishop zuvik and all who govern the church will be gifted with wisdom and knowledge bestowed by the holy spirit we pray lord bless your people that leaders of nations especially those newly elected will respect and protect all human life especially the unborn the marginalized the poor and the vulnerable we pray lord bless your people that all who are sick or suffering in any way may experience the comfort of jesus in their time of trial we pray lord bless your people that our faith community will be open to sharing our time and talent for the building up of god's kingdom especially as we journey towards our merger we pray lord bless your people that all victims of abuse may receive the assistance they need as they journey towards healing we pray lord bless your people that all who are called to serve as priests deacons consecrated religious or lay ministers may discern god's will we pray lord bless your people that all who have died especially catherine and calvin hansel remembered in a special way at this mass john wallace husband of linda bart miller husband of and both who died this week and those remembered in our book of life may see the face of god and live we pray lord bless your people that the prayers we now offer in the silence of our hearts may they be placed before gods and we pray lord bless your people in a special way i ask you to join me in imploring god to send his mother and her heavenly spouse the holy spirit into these parishes that we might be about the renewal of the church here and now and that we might live that renewal to the depth of our hearts we pray lord bless your people almighty god hear these prayers through jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen [Music] um [Music] so [Music] first [Music] so [Music] um pray my sisters and brothers that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father grant o lord we pray that what we offer in the sight of your majesty may obtain for us the grace of being devoted to you and gain us the prize of everlasting happiness through christ our lord [Music] the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks father most holy through your beloved son jesus christ your word through whom he made all things whom you sent as our savior and redeemer incarnate by the holy spirit and born of the virgin fulfilling your will and gaining for you a holy people he stretched out his hands as he endured his passion so as to break the bonds of death and manifest the resurrection and so with the angels and all the saints we declare your glory as with one voice we acclaim [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] lord god of hosts heaven and earth [Music] in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord [Music] [Music] is you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith save us the savior of the world for by your cross and resurrection you have set us free therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and david our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary the mother of god with saint joseph her most chaste spouse with the blessed apostles and glorious martyrs with saint catherine of sweden saint richard and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through who him with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours and forever [Music] [Music] oh [Music] man at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil gracious graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ [Music] lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always lamb of god you take sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb jesus for my brothers and sisters who come to us virtually your spiritual communion my jesus i believe that you are present in the most blessed sacrament i love you above all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot now receive you sacramentally come at least spiritually into my heart i embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself holy to you never permit me to be separated from you amen wow [Music] uh [Music] so as we come forward to receive our lord and the holy eucharist please join the light to the world the star of my life is jesus in him there is no darkness at all the night and the day are both the like the lamb is the light of the city of god shine in my heart lord jesus i want to see the brightness of god i want to look at jesus clear sign of righteousness shine on my path and show me the way to the father him there is no darkness at all lamb is the light of the city of god shine in my heart lord jesus i'm looking for the coming of christ i want to be with jesus when we have run with patience the race we shall know the joy o jesus in him there is no darkness at all the [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] this is so let us pray we have partaken of the gifts of this sacred mystery humbly imploring o lord that what your son commanded us to do in memory of him may bring us growth and charity and holiness of life through christ our lord we have a number of announcements i'm told first of all the uh guatemalan mission from up at st richards are selling nut bread so the order forms are in the north x if you would uh like to order a nut bread i think it's going to be delivery next week not roll not roll you're right next week so that that's on the order form second of all next week is a second collection for the retirement fund for the religious so as always we ask you to please be generous i figure social security is going to be done by the time he's ready to retire so help him out i'm just kidding and finally we can always use sanitizers so if you're willing to sanitize after mass please stick around thank you just uh i love to make kids laugh you know that and i always tell my poor nephew uh but my five-year-old nephew i was over there the other day because it was his birthday and i was talking to his mom and i said i made a let i was telling a story i said i made a left i made a ride and then i turned into a gas station and out of nowhere i didn't even know the child was in the room his little head pops up from the other side of the table and goes you turned into a gas station so i said no no i turned with my car into a gas station you and your car turned into a gas station oh the innocence of a child just know that you're being prayed for know that you're you're being loved know that jesus christ is lord and nothing of this world can change that amen the lord be with you may almighty god bless you the father the son and the holy spirit go forth and announce the gospel of our lord thanks be to god saint michael the archangel defend us in battle be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil may god rebuke him we humbly pray and do thou o prince of the heavenly host by the power of god cast into hell satan in all evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking for the ruin of souls amen say michael the archangel holy mary mother of god saint joseph protector of the church love you all as we go forth please join the singing of the city of god which can be found on in your bulletin on page four awake from your slumber arise from your sleep a new day is dawning for all the people in darkness have seen a great life the lord of our longing has conquered the night let us hear the city of god may our
