The Lorax is a very strange film releasing in 2012 this 3D animated film rates in 349 million USD being produced by illumination but this is where the strangeness of the movie starts because illumination just happens to be one of the greediest and most money-hungry Animation Studios out there birthing such cash cows like the Minions sing and the secret life of pets illumination has one primary goal with their movies which is making money they have a really clever system which guarantees their films will earn lots of money while remaining on the smaller budget of a 3D animated film which allows all of their films to be summarized into three money-making categories the first category is the marketable character movies and although you could technically put every single illumination film into here these are the ones made with the primary goal of these characters being as marketable and lovable as possible this includes the Despicable Me franchise the Minion movies and the secret life of pets duology the next category is that hey I know that thing movies which are designed so they can advertise these movies with hip Trends songs and even celebrations so that when the audience watches the advertisements or sees this film their neurons connect in their brain and they go hey I know that thing these include the same movies with their popular songs and extending out to the monstrosity known as hop geared towards kids wanted to see something seasonal during Easter final category is the popular franchise adaptation movies which quite obviously take popular franchises and adapt a movie out of them so that the audiences who enjoy those franchises are more likely to watch and enjoy the thousands of references crammed in this has been done with their most recent film The Super Mario Bros movie as well as the Grinch and finally The Lorax but The Lorax is a strange one to this category because unlike the huge Global phenomena of the Super Mario Bros and the Grinch with characters and settings that have been adapted and used for years and have had their own films in the past The Lorax was just a decently successful Doctor Who Goose book there's plenty of other Dr Seuss books that are much more popular that they could have adapted into a film such as Cat in the Hat or green eggs and ham but for some reason they chose The Lorax the original Lorax story was a message to the younger generation about the destruction of our environment and an inciting to save the trees and its clear anti-consumerism and anti-pollution Views being very prevalent something Dr Seuss obviously felt very strongly about so why would the greediest most merchandising consumerist Animation Studio go out of their way to adapt this book criticizing everything they were built on sheer ignorance I'm going to admit it straight I don't have an answer but the fact this movie was even made is absolutely hilarious yet incredibly sad at the same time I'm going to go over every single way this company managed to ruin the heartfelt nature of this environmentalist book firstly let's look at the main protagonist of this film his name's Ted now the original Lorax book didn't actually have a straight protagonist or any of the things really needed to make a typical three-part movie so that meant illumination had to get creative so what do you think the qualities are of this protagonist a strong Noble civilian whose lifelong dream is to Simply Aid The Lorax in protecting the environment someone the audience could relate to and look up to a fantastic hero well no he's a skinny adolescent who wants a tree so he can get some poon and we've all been there right guys so yeah not a fantastic start making your protagonist not actually care about the environment who simply wants a tree to impress a girl voiced by Taylor Swift for some reason who's the actual environmentalist hero this movie should have had but anyway we find out pretty quickly who the antagonist of this film is too and his name is Mr O'Hare a greedy businessman who just wants to sell people fresh air wait what's that the original book already had an antagonist who was much more terrifying in a symbol of corporate greed and his name is the onceler wait you mean that super cool super sexy green coat man yeah I'll just I'll just cut right to it this film turned the consumerous figurehead of the book it was destroying the environment into a misunderstood character whose only Act of selfishness is shown in a five minute song not to mention the entire point of his character in the book was that he was kept mysterious to indicate that it could be anyone but no this movie had to go right ahead and give him a face a personality and Ed Helms for a voice which unfortunately led to certain insane individuals fantasize rising over him which really makes me lose hope in humanity the five minute song I mentioned earlier how bad could I be was actually replacing another song they had originally intended to use called Bakery a much better and more epic song which get this was cut because it felt too critical of the company itself you see what I mean when I say this film is weird the company creating it goes out of its way to make a movie criticizing what their company is all about but then sometimes just decides to remove a good song because that was apparently too critical of the company the final part of the movie itself I have to talk about is the ending in the book the ending was kept a mystery in order to encourage the reader that they needed to take action the trees are currently being cut down and they're not stopping you know that's what the book is for making the reader want to make a change to the environment but the movie the movie is for making Dosh so of course in the typical Kitty flick fashion the movie ends with Ted Bundy planting a tree the townspeople singing a song this kid's shaking his ass and everything is a paradise now hooray now time to drink some orange juice out of my sippy cup okay I finished talking about the movie surely there's nothing else to talk about well just one more thing the advertising for this movie was once again very strange illumination wanted to partner up with other companies in order to spread the word and make TV adverts linking these brands with The Lorax adverts would typically consist of the brands being Incorporated somehow Into The Lorax world with the animals and The Lorax talking about how great this fantastic product is so what sort of products do you think they would feature in these adverts well I don't think anyone guessed a gas-powered car the animators sat down spent hours animating a gas-powered car driving through the beautiful Lorax world made all the animals and The Lorax talk about how it was truffle or tree approved and not once did they ever think Hmm this is pretty hypocritical to what the message of this movie is the fact this happened and it went to Air and illumination still didn't see an issue with it is honestly hilarious and baffling to me oh overall this movie is just a colossal misunderstood disaster adaptation created by who else but illumination that to this day makes me baffled to even think that not one person questioned its creation process or stopped to think that maybe it wasn't the best idea I think it's very safe to say that the lorax is an incredibly peculiar movie that should be remembered in the history books because of how hilariously bad it is but do you want to know the strangest part of it it features Danny De Vita thank you
