what's up everyone Trent here welcome back to the channel and we're checking out the last of us I'm so excited I played the game when it first came out and you're going in blind I'm going in completely blind and I don't do horror and I don't do jump scares so this is going to be an entertaining ride I think you'll love it I honestly think you'll love it I think it'll actually be right up your alley in terms of the storytelling because it is one of the greatest stories ever but um yeah super excited to see how they adapted episode one when you're lost in the darkness let's check it out let's go yeah it's a new virus in Madagascar so you could be in Chicago within a matter of weeks and we end up with a global pandemic very proposal at once and uh Dr Newman you're also an epidemiologist I presume the prospect of a viral pandemic keeps you up at night as well no no no all right well that's our show you like saying no yes not bacteria not viruses so fungus there are some fungi who seek not to kill but to control let me ask you where do we get LSD from where do you get it from it comes from ergot but fungi can alter our very Minds there's a fungus that infects insects travels through its circulatory system to the ant's brain and then floods it with hallucinogens thus bending the ants mind to its well fungus starts to direct the ant's Behavior telling it where to go what to do like a puppeteer good foreshadowing the fungus needs food to live so it begins to devour its host from within it keeps its puppet Alive by preventing decomposition and currently there are no reasons for fungi to evolve to be able to withstand higher temperatures but what if that were to change what if for instance the world were to get slightly warmer cordyceps aspergillus any one of them could become capable of borrowing into our brains and taking control not of millions of us but billions of us billions of puppets with poisoned Minds permanently fixed on one unified listening to spread the infection to every last human alive by any means necessary and there are no treatments for this no preventatives no cures they don't exist it's not even possible to make them nice touch of the smoking in the studio as well God what a what a start with setting up oh setting up the the risk of a new pandemic with environmental factors in play like climate change so I don't really like pancakes I know you're my benefit 36. don't you like that and then we'll get you some new clothes and toys as many as you want to play with last meal it's just a little needle I suppose they'd have to burn bodies to stop the spread and the risk of contamination but it would just be never ending oh I did foreign that moment completely different to how Joel was 20 years before the empathy's got his disassociated and detached from the grief get rid of any Firefly propaganda from a quarantine Zone public come on or I could just shoot you yeah but then what would you do you're short five six cigarettes Roxy Hydro how old three months from Atlanta I don't know where he gets them from I just know they're real it's real it's from Atlanta I just got a factory down there in the qz supposedly only makes two things pills and bullets bullets and pills the more you shoot people the harder it is to sleep I guess oh you guessed yeah you got a little bit on your conscience look those trucks are shitty for a reason and they don't have respond I love the subtle confirmation that Tommy steals okay show me where the Tower is you can't be serious Joel it's in Wyoming serious look all this Open Country you're a capable guy but there are worse things than infected out there I hear everything on this there are Raiders they're as slavers but you're sure civilizations just collapsed but I love the confirmations of it's been three weeks and oh yeah Ryder's life is your sure he's okay I like that they're taking the time to show what life in the quarantine zone is like for different people the Russian cards just how different it was to 20 to 20 years ago but also the the things that I've value the maps the the knowledge yeah this is why I need the car that Scotch might actually be pretty good if it's age nicely oh the watch is broken again not sure if that was delivered that looked like a bullet or something had hit it hit it yeah I just wonder how long it took test to convince him that she wasn't a firefly I got jumped by a couple guys well guys just a couple teenagers said some [ __ ] probably shouldn't have I need you to take a breath what the guys who jumped me away with Robert he sold down battery to someone else nothing's lost the [ __ ] like this is gonna happen I need the battery test truck's no good without one and if I don't get to Tommy soon he's gonna die out there okay okay we got our money back and truck yeah we will hurt him but we don't want to let him know that we're coming so we can hurt him I just hope that don't go all Clint Eastwood yeah well they built they've built Joel up to be a very imposing threat the way people respond to him we've been blowing up meaningless Federal targets spread out all over the QC two weeks we've already lost four people and we're what's the point of this my answer is to follow [ __ ] orders and why do you have some random girl locked in a room and the guys you have guarding her won't tell me [ __ ] our people are asking what's going on and I don't know what to tell them tell them to follow [ __ ] orders and again it's an interesting layer of command of if you don't no you're not meant to know Kim military dictatorship to restore democracy and greater purpose than any of us could have ever imagined so we're leaving tonight and we're taking you with us I love that change of how she went from really snarky and witty to just completely vulnerable ready I love how people were like ready to go into danger you have yep yep I'm guessing that's not going to be mold people down here I'm the underminer really you don't want to run into the into one down here yeah that is so cool I know I just I wasn't expecting it I think it he wasn't down here last time that's a new one no you think he came down after he was infected maybe down here is where he was infected that is so cool it's giving me Swamp Thing Vibes I love it [Music] the [ __ ] isn't it our body uh I think about it compounder oh that's very fresh is that the Firefly yes I was thinking the same thing you could say because that's right [Laughter] ow good try Ellie Joel Marlene what the f uck ing war must be going pretty shitty for you to be buying from scumbags like him yeah it kind of has been the merch is back yeah give me my knife what do you need a car battery for dope not in her [Laughter] and to answer your question but Tommy's just one man it's our business to know things to know things you're the cause of it you turn my own brother against me we were going to move Ellie out of the Zone tonight you're gonna do it let me take our test we don't have time for this is you and I know what you're both capable of For Better or Worse it's a good way to get to Tommy as well you get her there safely and they'll give you what you need [Laughter] you trust her no me neither she seems desperate by vehicle usually means repurposed Venture stuff so better than decent chance making it to Tommy in one of those you all talk it through but please remember that I'm bleeding out before we hand her over they give us everything that we want if not we kill her there and then deal really you are all that matters let's go really I just love her attitude it's great there's the Assassin attitude but there's concern as well yeah go [ __ ] this up the way she was looking at Marlene he called it desperate he knows that there's something special oh they got the squishy shoes the Foley artists have done a phenomenal job already give us a minute all right [Laughter] number one hits hey that probably would have stopped at 2003 so the hits would have been pretty good yeah stuff what's 80s smart kids yeah very smart what are you doing killing time what am I supposed to do I'm sure you'll figure that out your watch is broken it's broken she doesn't know how deep the cut you guys go out there a lot I guess when was the last time maybe a year what's it matter but you know where to go so we're gonna be okay yeah so what's the deal with you anyway you some kind of bigwig's daughter or something something like that both concerned for different reasons well the radio came on when you're sleeping what was the song I kept saying like wake me up before you go Wham means trouble [Laughter] listen gotcha I haven't told teenagers in 20 years yeah it's not just to stop the infection we've got the curfew because of insurrectionists as well so they've already gone beyond what their purpose should have been I just love it it's about what you're being shown as well but it's also the background noise drag you down [Laughter] silent and inconspicuous got a little shot now she's with the best people she's with Smugglers they know their way around I like spending enough time on the journey between locations to just build suspension uh suspense and tension and the look on Ellie's face like she is oh no oh it's him it's the yeah okay let's start this out turn around you're holding the [ __ ] knees get on your [ __ ] knees hold on when I [ __ ] tell you man hands on your head eyes forward hands on your head I love that he was just standing in front of her really man the way he like the game is by the book he was with his daughter unauthorized exit the hanging for that fine everything off of this run and half off on all of the pills Hi boss all off of your [ __ ] mind oh [Music] yeah it's just flashbacks to Sarah [Applause] yeah all that all that trauma and emotion pen tough anger oh [ __ ] no I'm [Music] not a noise [Music] it's such a good reveal that she's infected hmm [Music] what a shot wow oh it's a clicker ing oh and the radio coming on with an 80s song with an 80s song with an 80s song what do you think yeah okay that's emotional right it it and that's the thing it is it's going to be it's a very character-driven story and much like other analogies where people draw comparisons between The Walking Dead um annihilation's another one I would say as soon as that thing came up on the uh wall I'd got flashbacks to when we watched denomination yeah and how creeped out that whole movie made me yes there's a lot of similarities between between those types of stories but it's really character focused where you've got the infected that you know that's the the core concept of the show where you know they obviously don't want to get infected and now you've learned that Ellie has a greater purpose because she has been infected for three weeks and hasn't turned and now they're getting her to another place like it's those character moments that are are what made the game so beloved and there were so many moments in that they were ripped straight from the game very early on from Sarah falling asleep and doing the hardcore like the hardcore drugs line following us and Joel putting her to sleep her waking up in the empty house but they made specific changes to certain things things to make it flow like there was no focus on Sarah's day yeah before she like she literally wakes up uh she goes to sleep and then wakes up that's where they start the game seeing the day it made you connect more with Sarah's character and see the relationship between her and Joel like it actually built up a lot more time and and it made you care when that moment happened where Sarah gets shot by that jerk um officer it made it even more powerful well I guess the the main thing watching back is you're probably not going to be seen me react a lot during her during her moment during her day moment because it's so much information to take in at once when I know nothing oh yeah about this all I know is the kind of creepy funky pieces the cordyceps I am the infected uh and two people going cross-country that is literally my expression of what this game is and some couple of cool friends that cosplay some really cool things yeah and that's it and that's good that's and that's that you're gonna being so new to it and seen how they've developed the story and how they've turned gameplay into a story is amazing and they've done really well yeah the the set design the recreation of like that the castle the uke when Tommy and um Joel driving with Sarah in the back that is almost scene for scene as it is with some subtle changes like the plane instead of a car crash but that camera mount where you're going along and seeing just the chaos that's erupting it gave a lot of the events gave really good scope really good foreshadowing starting off in 1968 where they're discussing the implications of a pandemic and how it will come to fruition or how it could come through climate change and the conditions that was huge that was awesome to include but the character moments are what makes this great and seeing how it had a greater impact seeing Joel um which Pedro Pascal did a phenomenal job amazing the casting in this is is excellent to begin with Merle Dandridge is Marlene's excellent and um uh Gabriel Luna is Tommy excellent as well and Bella Ramsey killed azelli but seeing Joel being so warm and loving with Sarah flashing forward to 20 years after she's dead and he's just cold ruthless he's almost without purpose he's cynical and jaded towards the world and you see that he's carrying the Dead kid yeah who's just been put down for being infected and just lumps him into the fire no emotion whatsoever completely desensitized the whole thing it's just this is the way our life is now it's what we do yeah we've got military oppression with the um martial law that got brought in yeah uh and yeah this is the the best way I can describe his characterization through it is the the juxtaposition between the if you tell me to look for the light I'm going to kick you and I punch you in the case but to without hope but then that hope of we need the battery we need to get the truck we need to get this gear together to go save my brother yeah the last of his family the last yeah and so there is that hope and purpose but it's that weird kind of almost Twisted hope and purpose where it's it's cynical to the world yeah but he has his own mission yeah his own mission is in line with anything else this has a goal but no that was that was just absolutely beautiful I I like that the length of the episode I'm sure some people might think was a bit too long I really enjoyed the pacing where it took the time to build tension if and it would have been different for you not having any idea of what's going to come next and what certain environments are going to look like but having those familiar scenes you know where the story is going to go at certain points but the journey to get there it flowed nicely it flowed really nicely and again as someone coming so blind into it the hovering on the slight details was really good in the sense of where you get bitten depends on how long it takes that was really good and I and I was able to notice it read it and take it in to go okay cool then realizing okay kids on the knee and then it's the red light okay it's temperature gauge red light means infected red means bad it was really interesting to see those small details down to the details of the food coupons and tokens and the little bit tip bits of information yeah an hour 20 is long but it definitely didn't feel like it I normally can't sit there still for this long so to get me to sit this door apart from my joltingness at some things because volley artists you did amazing they did great squishy shoes um it is totally encapsulated but I'm glad you touched on a couple of things that because it is subtle in what information is actually given a lot of it is observational as as the signs were and I said in whether it's whether I've kept it in the reaction or not I said when we were watching that you've got what's in front of you and that's the focus but it's also the things happening around that bring you into the world when Sarah is in the kitchen looking at the DVD sorry oh that was I'm so glad that wasn't in Focus because that's freaking creepy yeah and and um Grandma Adler was doing the twitching when she's in the watch shopping you just see all the police cars and then the swap band goes through yep and it's just all those little things the plate the the fighter planes going overhead even though they weren't the core Focus there was so much happening along in the background it built up the the the tension that was happening and it happened so slowly during the day like you start to see the streets becoming less um less uh full the child who was twitching with his um wristband was he infected or was that just a nervous twitch it made you uncomfortable it made you uncertain of what was coming next and I just yeah that there were some really good changes that worked in that like the whole the whole Mrs Adler thing was not in the game at all but that was really good to show that people who'd been in the city were infected and then the warrior that Sarah had because she'd been in the city so it also raises another level of was Sarah infected at all and was her was her death actually a Saving Grace in a way because she would have turned which in turn could have killed Joel there are a lot of that's a lot of layers that are included in that but that scene when she gets shot and Pedro he's acting and the the acting overall but that scene was so powerful When Sarah's just screaming she wants help and then she's dying Pedro and um Pedro sorry Joel and Tommy are so helpless to do anything it was just so good and it was the helplessness that was shown through Tommy as well to be the that there's nothing that you can do there's nothing that we we can do but it's then the desperation of the father trying to say to his daughter as well and wanting to keep her safe always yeah and and Tommy Tommy just being standing back unable to do anything yeah and it's the he would have had guilt as well because he was just two seconds too late yeah but yeah no really good first episode I am so excited for the rest yes and it's bringing flashbacks to the huge anxiety that I had the things coming up and reliving those I don't like jump scares you did what you did very well I'm not looking for it but I'm looking forward but not looking forward to so apologies if I'm at crucial key moments of seeing villains buried in my hands because on the infected I love the the roots coming out of the mouth okay think of it like this I'm Dr Zoidberg it was good it was good seeing The Roots come out and they're just beating like and just seeing the root system crawling up there crawling up their um their face biologist yeah no here's what this does yeah so you're a biologist you're a biologist but um yeah no the designs the design is amazing and the makeup look is yeah amazing right and brilliant I really enjoyed it yay
