I'm wondering if anyone here comes from a culture that doesn't have lilting? Especially in folk music. Seems very universal.

Crazy Frog is therefore the culmination of centuries of Irish art.

so i was doing some research on this island and i found a video of this the guy is making irish music with his mouth this is like one of the coolest things i've seen for a while and i had to find out what it was called that took me about two seconds because i looked up irish mouth jig on google and the first thing that popped up was this wikipedia article on lilting the article was pretty bare bones and the source was pretty shoddy and also talked about a completely different form of music altogether so the next thing i did was open my music dictionary and no dice that was fine a little more in-depth research was required and what came out in the end from this quirky underrated and underdocumented irish art form was a nice lesson about how to learn music the purpose of lilting is to imitate irish music with the mouth and it goes by many names diddling die diddling mouth music gob music humming jigging and and puss puss music okay i guess that one checks out anyway lilton consists of non-lexical vocables which are words in music that aren't actually words if you live in the united states you probably know this one [Music] god that is horrifying if you're from sweden you definitely know this one so which non-lexical vocables are used in lilting most standard are your deadly ds or deadly dues or dudley diddly dumbs but really it's more of a personal thing and everyone has their own style like these two usually the nonsense words people use are three syllables why three syllables because that's what irish music sounds like and that is the ultimate goal with lilting this is also probably why lilting came about in the first place to imitate instrumental music with the mouth in rural ireland not every house had an instrument or had the ability to repair a broken one but the people still wanted to dance in their homes and lilting can help with that [Music] lilting is also often used as the chorus to a song here is an old recording of sheamus singing [Music] finally and my personal favorite use for lilting is just on its own as its own art form and people are able to do some pretty virtuosic and genuinely impressive things with lilting see now this is the beauty of lilting i didn't have to teach you how to do any of it some of you might have even done something similar to lilting before even watching this video and for decades this is how lilting was and is still learned just by listening music doesn't have to be complicated it doesn't have to be a hill to climb just by showing you a few clips of lilting you can probably already freestyle a little bit no that the ease of lilting doesn't directly translate to learning an instrument or writing your own music but it goes to show that there's something already inside you that understands music at a fundamental level if you want to do music you can do it okay so i've left a little bit of music here at the end so that you can practice your little thing this is a jig called the irish washer woman first i'll show you how i would lilt it [Music] little now you try and have some fun with it you don't have to do diddly doodly you can choose any group of three syllable words or phrases you want guy fiery spaghetti becky look at her but anything works here it goes and happy lilting [Music] [Music] me do
