[Music] welcome brothers and sisters welcome friends to this very exciting time this explained mass and so before we even begin mass before I even get vested why do we come to church why are we even here why do we come into this building to pray together why not pray in our home why not pray in our living room why not just go for a walk and enjoy God's creation why do we actually come to the church building first and foremost as Catholics we believe that the Eucharist is the real presence of Christ and so if we believe that the Eucharist is the real presence the body and blood of Jesus Christ there is no other equivalent nothing is equal to the body and blood of Christ and so first and foremost we are here as Catholics to receive Holy Communion and second of all to be a people of God to be related to God vertically we also are then related to the body of Christ horizontally and so our worship of God vertically automatically leads us into worship horizontally and that's where we are as the body of Christ to be here to receive Holy Communion and then to be with one another in community and so that is why we gather point number two we can ask ourselves I've heard so often you know what maybe I don't get out everything I don't get stuff out of mass or I don't get anything out of it or maybe I'm a little bored or you know maybe I'm distracted it's okay to be distracted we're all distracted as human people but it's not only about what we get out of it it's about our worship of God and yes we are supposed to get stuff out of it so to speak a little way a little trick to get more out of mass is to be prepared and to be prepared for mass it could be a little thing it could be when you're in the parking lot fighting for one of the spaces it could be on your way in walking with your family a brief little prayer open my heart Lord opened my heart maybe to hear something in the Word of God maybe to experience something in the preparation of the gifts or the receiving of Holy Communion but to take even 10 seconds and say to say Lord open my heart I want to introduce you to three hand positions that can help us understand what's happening today at this mess the first hand position of the priests is here the Lord be with you you want to practice the Lord be with you so that hand position I am actually speaking to you at every mass the priest at some point is addressing the people and so when my hands are like this its to you okay the second position is the or ons position that the prayer position during this position the priest is addressing God the Father so if I'm here I'm addressing you if I'm here I'm addressing God so for example if I say brothers and sisters let us pray and offer our prayers to the Lord dear God Oh God right and so this is to you this is to God and the third position is called the epiclesis which means the coming of the holy spirit and that is hands over like this the calling down of the Holy Spirit so pay attention to those three hand motions so for example when we do the blessing of the holy water I'll say something like this to your brothers and sisters we have journey together through Lent and now we ask God's blessing upon this water Oh God who etc etc etc we ask you now to send your Holy Spirit upon this water you see one two three thirdly and then Mass will begin the vesting or the dressing of the priests why do we even do this why do we even have all of these symbols why are these things in special colors why are there flowers and huge candles because it's all for Jesus because in our daily lives we don't have all these fancy things and so when we have these things it tells us something more is happening here and that's why we do strange things like genuflecting or bowing or holding our hands like this that's why we dress up a little bit more coming to church because what is happening here is different from what happens every other day of the week and so a Catholic review of genuflecting and bowing so first of all we bowed to the altar simple and we've genuflect to the tabernacle bow to the altar genuflect to the tabernacle and so this first garment here this first investment is the white out the white symbolizes purity babies wear them at baptism certainly brides wear the dress to symbolize the purity of Christ Jesus this is a stole it comes from the time of Rome where we've seen as power and this is not worldly power now but this is the power of Jesus Christ given to the priest for the sacraments and finally the chasuble the chapel and the souls are in various colors for the season and for Easter season the color is anyone there you go and because of the blue this could also be used for the masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary and so this is a chapel a little tradition for priests your brothers and sisters in tradition would give you a chapel for your first mass as a present so this was actually a gift for my five brothers and sisters we have come together in church over here right we have prepared our hearts and figured out our hands positions now we are vested and ready to go and so as I journey to the back of the church to begin this procession I invite you now to pray a prayer of preparation Lord open my hearts [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the greeting in every Catholic Mass across the entire world from Cedar Grove to San Francisco to Beirut to Rome to Cairo Egypt to st. Petersburg Russia is not good morning it's not how are you doing it's not a greeting from Danny Peterson it is the same greeting all over the world and that is brothers and sisters in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit amen it's not how was your weekend it's not good morning it is the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all the shortened version is the Lord be with you that is a greeting from st. Paul's letters and so it's not something that we invented it's not something that church invented its from our brother st. Paul in Scripture and so at every Mass we begin with the penitential Rite which means we ask God for mercy but in this time of Easter season we do that by the blessing and sprinkling of the holy water which is a sign of our baptism brothers and sisters let us ask God to bless this holy water which will be sprinkled upon us as the memorial of our baptism Lord our God in your mercy be present to your peoples prayers and for us who recall the wondrous work of our creation and still the greater work of our Redemption graciously bless this water for you have created water to make the fields fruitful and to reflect and cleanse our bodies you also made water the instrument of your mercy for through water you freed your people from slavery and quench their thirst in the desert through water the prophets proclaim the New Covenant you were to enter a pond with the human race and last of all through water which Christ made holy in the Jordan you renewed our corrupted nature in the bath of regeneration therefore may this water be for us a memorial of the baptism we have received and grant that we may share in the gladness of our brothers and sisters who at Easter have received their baptism and we ask this through Christ our Lord and during the sprinkling of the holy water the tradition of the church is to proclaim the gloria which was the song that the angels in heaven sang with thee when when they visited that the baby Jesus with the quiz question who visited the baby Jesus we have him in the manger scene the three kings know the three kings brought their gifts the other the other the Shepherd's right when the Shepherd's visited they sang this song from Luke chapter 2 so let us sing with the angels and all the saints [Music] and [Music] [Applause] [Music] the opening prayer is called the collect because it collects all the prayers of the congregation and so when I say let us pray we pause for a moment and you add all your prayers and silence let us pray may your people exalt forever O God and renewed youthfulness of spirit so that rejoicing now in the restored glory of our adoption we may look forward in confident hope to the rejoicing of the day of the resurrection through our Lord Jesus Christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit one God for ever and ever the next part of our math is called the Liturgy of the word the Liturgy of the word the Liturgy of the Eucharist the two major parts of our mass and the thing to remember is that Christ our Christ is present in both word and Eucharist so the Liturgy of the word typically has three readings the first reading most of the time is from the Old Testament the story of God's chosen people during the Easter season however that reading is taken from the Acts of the Apostles the Acts of the Apostles is the companion piece to st. Luke's Gospel he wrote both of them and the Acts it takes us on a journey with the New Apostolic Church and the first Christians so we'll hear that story today the second reading is from the New Testament most often is four it is from one of Saint Paul's letters and he wrote many sometimes it's from the letter to the Hebrews and also another awesome letter the third the third reading is the heart the peak the pinnacle the high point the apex of the Liturgy of the word it is the gospel the gospel the word gospel means good news and what my friends is the good news that God so loved the world and all of us that he sent His only Son so that all of us who are believers may have eternal life and not perish it is so important that we stand and sing hallelujah and we stand and listen as it is proclaimed between the first reading and the second reading we have the sum the word Saum means song and so we sing that piece it's a beautiful reflective piece today I serve as Lecter so now I will go to the Ambo and our math will continue a reading from the Acts of the Apostles Peter said to the people that God of Abraham the god of Isaac and the God of Jacob the god of Our Fathers has glorified his servant Jesus whom you handed over and denied in pilots presence when he had decided to release him you denied the holy and righteous one and asked that a murderer be released to you the author of life was put to death but God raised him from the dead of this we are witnesses now I know brothers that you acted out of ignorance just as your leaders did but God has thus brought to fulfillment what he has announced beforehand through the mouth of all the prophets that his Christ would suffer repent therefore and be converted that your sins may be wiped away the word of the Lord [Music] this day was made this day was made us rejoice in salvation [Music] eternal you have [Music] [Applause] [Music] your hand raised me up into ions you have given me [Music] a reading from the first letter of Saint John my children I am writing this to you so that you may not commit sin but if anyone does sin we have an advocate with the father Jesus Christ the righteous one he is expiation for our sins and not for our sins only but for those of the whole world the way we may be sure that we know him is to keep his Commandments those who say I know him but do not keep his Commandments are liars and the truth is not in them but whoever keeps his word the love of God is truly perfected in him the word of the Lord [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the Lord be with you a reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke the two disciples recounted what had taken place on the way and how Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of the bread while they were still speaking about this he stood in their midst and said to them peace be with you but they were startled and terrified and thought that they had seen a ghost then he said to them why are you troubled and why do questions arise in your hearts look at my hands and my feet that it is I myself touch me and see because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see that I have and as as as he said this he showed them his hands and his feet while they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed he asked them have you anything to eat they gave him a piece of baked fish he took it and ate it in front of them he said to him these are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you that everything written about me in the law of the Moses and in the prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures and he said to them thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached in his name to all the nations beginning with Jerusalem and you are witnesses of these things the gospel of the Lord I figured since we're doing a lot of explanation instead of actually giving a homily I'll tell you how I come up with homilies at least for me I know a lot of the other priests do similar things although we probably all have different ways of coming up with homilies so the first thing is prayer if I spend a week and I don't really spend time in prayer my homies are a little more boring or a little bit more dried up so prayer is essential prayer is the wellspring so we have to be praying so the first thing I do on about Monday I'll look ahead to the next weekend and I'll see if there's any big events is it Palm Sunday is it First Holy Communion as a parish confirmation is the Pope visiting New York City those types of things the big events that's the first thing that informs my homily the second thing is the season homilies in Lent will be different from homilies and Easter for example then the third thing I do is I read the Gospel and the readings for the upcoming Sunday at about Monday and this is what I do my first reading who likes to cook who likes to cook here ok quite a bit essential to cooking is to let food marinate right it's kind of like marinating so what I'll do is I'll read the readings and just let them sit don't even think I don't even think about it just let them sit just let them sit ok then I'm like Wednesday or Thursday I'll start putting a little bit more logical thought into it how are the readings connected is there anything going on in town or in their lives or the people who I'm preaching to that might be relevant you know what would be a good message for the event that type of thing and also the 5 p.m. mass and the 12:15 mass have very different people so maybe what mass am i preaching at and I start trying to put the readings together and then by Saturday I really try to narrow down a point that way I'm not going on and I know that's never happened with any of you okay so I try to say okay I have all these different ideas like with his gospel I could go on for a half hour let's let's stick to one point I was told many times Father short and sweet okay short and sweet keep it simple less is more so try to narrow down and then by Saturday and make like the final adjustments to try to nail it down and should try to bring home a message and so that's the way I prepare and I know a lot of the priests use similar methods and so I decided I don't want to leave you without any homily so allow me 30 seconds I read the readings I thought about the explained mass yesterday was First Holy Communion I had all this in my mind and the line that stuck out to me sometimes I'll just read the readings a few times and see the line the line that stuck out to me and it was in both readings at first and the gospel is what was this the first reading that says we were witnesses of these things and then the gospel says and you must be witnesses of these things so Acts of the Apostles and the Gospel of Luke they're both saying that we are witnesses Jesus is either risen or isn't like people it happened or witnesses I can testify and so that's what we're called to be brothers and sisters witnesses of the risen Lord and there's your 32nd homily and so now brothers and sisters we we continue to pray and without progress into our Apostles Creed there's two Creed's in the church the Apostles Creed and the Nicene Creed the Apostles Creed was written in 70 AD formulated then the Council of Nicaea and 3025 formulated the Nicene Creed the Apostles Creed is a much simpler formula and so if you if you would like to read along with the cards but I know that most of us haven't memorized but it's good to follow along we proclaimed together the Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty Creator of heaven and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary suffered under Pontius Pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father the Father Almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead I believe in the Holy Spirit the Holy Catholic Church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting amen and now we offer what's called either the universal prayer or the intercessions or the petitions and that's when we pray for the needs of the Pope a bishop civil leaders those burdened with any difficulties the sick and the dying it's those seven the Pope the bishop world leaders those suffering the sick and the dying and so father know knowing that you always hear and answer our prayers we offer these prayers to you please respond risen Savior hear our prayer for the church that the Spirit will open minds so that we may understand the good news and share the message of hope with all whom we encounter we pray for peace throughout the world especially in the Middle East and Africa that they may soon know peace so that justice and well-being may flourish in their lives we pray or grace of recognition that we may come to know Jesus in the breaking of the bread and the sharing of the scriptures so that we may be dynamic disciples we pray for all who are broken and wounded that they may find healing in Christ and that God will help us recognize them as our brothers and sisters through the wounded Christ we pray for people in areas of war and violence that new opportunities may be found to end conflicts provide the necessities of life and restore the means to support their families we pray for all who are sick Stan Crowell antonio el grande maria harp and dot new ha and all those suffering long-term and chronic illnesses we pray for those who have died especially vito Cusimano for whom this mass is offered and for those who have died this past week mauro canonic o we pray lord god you tell us to seek and we shall find to ask and we shall receive here in answer these prayers for we make them through Christ our Lord for set for six years in the seminary I studied liturgy and when I got to this parish Monsignor slave who has been studying at his whole life we were talking one day and he was reflecting on his understanding of the preparation of the gifts and to me I really learned something new and so Monsignor will share that now and it's a lesson that we never stop learning about God's mysteries of course now comes the part of the maths that everybody recognizes the collection but let's look a little bit deeper where does the money from the collection come we know where it goes it's the finances that make the parish run but where does it come from comes from hands your hands that work hard comes from your hearts that are filled with generosity as the money is collected then begins a procession two people are chosen more or less at random from the the assembly and they bring up the bread and wine what is that bread and wine it's the fruit of the earth and again the work of human hands since these two things represent ourselves and the church tells us that we must learn in the mass to offer not just things but ourselves but that's what God really wants and the heart the will the faith the love that you show so generously [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] when [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Almighty father receive O Lord we pray these offerings of your exultant church and as you have given her cause for such great gladness grant also that the gifts we bring may bear fruit and perpetual happiness through Christ our Lord before the preface dialog in the preparation there's two things I wanted to point out number one is the prayer of offerings that said quietly while you're singing which is blessed are You Lord God of all creation for through your goodness we have received the bread and wine we offer you those prayers are borrowed from our Jewish brothers and sisters as the prayer before meals and so we've inherited that tradition and secondly you saw a little droplet of water poured into the wine that's not merely to water the wind down it's a symbolic offering the symbol speaks about the blood and water which came forth from the side of Christ and the prayer that said is this through this mystery of water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity it's a beautiful prayer and speaks to us of that very profound mystery the following prayer is personally one of my favorites in the liturgy and it's called the preface and it extends from now until we sing the holy holy together which by the way is the song of the Angels in Isaiah chapter 6 the Lord be with you thanks to the Lord our God it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation at all times to acclaim you O Lord but in this time above all to laud you yet more gloriously when Christ our Passover has been sacrificed he never ceases to offer himself for us but defends us and even pleads our cause before you he is the sacrificial victim who dies no more the lamb once slain who lives forever and therefore overcome with Paschal joy every land every people they exalts in your praise and even the heavenly powers with angelic hosts sing together the unending hymn of your glory as they acclaim [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] this next part of the mass is called the Eucharistic prayer there are four essential Eucharistic prayers all those although there are a few additional ones for special occasions and this is number two out of the four it's the most ancient and the shortest it goes all the way back to the second century we have records of this prayer and this next particular section is the most important of all the mass known as the institution narrative where this bread and this wine is transformed into the presence of Christ you are indeed holy O Lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of My Blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you Lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit the next three paragraphs of prayers is for the church the Pope the dead and all gathered here remember Lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with Francis our Pope and Joseph our Bishop and all the clergy remember also the dead our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the Resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of God with blessed Joseph her spouse with the Blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son Jesus Christ this is the climax of the Eucharistic prayer called the doxology which means glory and so now we pray in the unity of the Father Son and Holy Spirit through him and with him and in him O God Almighty father in the unity of the Holy Spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] and perhaps the most familiar prayer in the entire world we say at this point at the special time in Mass at the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our Father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us Lord we pray from every evil and graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may always be free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the Blessed hope and the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ [Music] Lord Jesus Christ who said to your apostles peace I leave you my peace I give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever the Peace of the Lord be with you all cultural norms are different all throughout the world but at this time as you share the Peace of Christ by handshake by a hug by a bow anything that that you feel comfortable with it's not just a way to say hello to the neighbor it's the peace of Christ and so let us offer each other the sign of peace [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] in the Old Testament the ancient Jews would sacrifice animals as atonement for their sins most commonly they would sacrifice lambs on the altar in the temple and the blood of the lamb would flow off the right side of the temple I mentioned it before but now that same blood and water flows from the side of Christ who is the new altar and even more profoundly is the new lamb brothers and sisters we have no need to sacrifice lambs or actual animals anymore that covenant is renewed and is transformed in Christ Jesus and so brothers and sisters I say to you not the animal of a lamb but behold the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb but only say the word and my soul shall [Music] and now in this mask the moment of intimacy the moment of communion with Jesus Christ the moment of receiving his body and his blood [Music] and the remaining body of Christ is placed back in the tabernacle for reservation for prayer and devotion [Music] now we take a moment of silence to reflect on the Living God that is now in our hearts let us pray look with kindness upon your peephole Oh Lord and grant we pray that those you were pleased to renew by eternal mysteries may attain in their flesh the uncorruptible glory of the Resurrection through Christ our Lord you might say now that this is the practical time of mass where we have parish announcements but really if you think about it the sacred and the everyday shouldn't be separated they they're unique and they're distinct but it's not one in the other it's a connection because this parish it's not what it just happens here on Sunday it's what happens all week this parish has dozens and dozens of ministry we have things for the kids for the youth for the seniors service projects we have tons of stuff that go on at this parish as you know and so what we do here is to send forth for the whole week and that's why the sending is so important that you don't just leave it here you carry this message with you and then we have very practical parish announcements first let me start off by saying thank you for coming and for being a part of this my deep gratitude I think it's such an amazing opportunity when the video is finished I asked you to share it with people as a teaching mechanism so share it with your friends it'll be on YouTube you'll be made we're aware of that also you see other people it's just not the priest up here right you see other kids adults all throughout there's Usher's music ministers Lecter's Eucharistic ministers altar servants everybody was trained thoroughly to be up here this is not something that you just jump into everybody was trained but the people of God are called to be a part of the mass it's not just the priest many people in this parish serve at the liturgy and in in your heart if you ever feel cold maybe God is inspiring me to serve in the liturgy speak to one of the priests and go through a training to do that well and here are the concluding rites of mass once again is not just to say by but to take what you experience here and bring it to the world and so brothers and sisters the Lord be with you bow down for the blessing may God who by the resurrection of his only begotten son be pleased to confer on you the gift of redemption and of adoption giving you gladness by this blessing amen and may the blessing of Almighty God the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit come down upon you and remain with you forever the mass is ended go in peace alleluia alleluia thanks be to God please join me in singing our closing song alleluia alleluia number 166 in your song books number one at six six [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] one before we start the mass what is something we can say or pray when we first arrived number two what is the one reason why
