[Music] [Music] [Applause] in the early 80s Konami was an up-and-coming player in the video game industry early arcade success has created a path for Konami to expand into the home consumer game market by 1983 Konami was developing games for the MSX home computer system which was popular in Japan in 1986 Konami hired a then 23-year old who died Okajima to work on their MSX game development team he was test as an assistant designer for the game penguin adventure afterwards Konami tasks Kojima on developing a combat action game similar to some popular games at the arcade this game was to be on the msx2 and be called project ends three one two due to the hardware limitations of the MSX to making this sort of game would be near impossible this problem prompted Kojima to be creative he thought it would be fun to make a combat game without the actual combat kijima said in a later interview I realized that this idea wouldn't sell though so I continued to think about it the next thought was a combat game just about escaping and running away but then I thought this is totally uncool next was about hiding sneaking and staying still I realized that this could work but it wasn't very heroic it may still prove a difficult sell so it needed a final layer infiltration having to sneak into somewhere to add extra tension I added the story and the stealth game genre was born the game was to be eventually named Metal Gear the working title project n31 2 would be referenced with the codename of the main mission operation intrude and three one three after the special forces unit Foxhound loses contact with their best agent gray fox the game follows a rookie operative named Solid Snake as he infiltrates the hostile nation of outer heaven alone his mission is to rescue gray fox and to destroy the titular Metal Gear a nuclear bipedal walking tank the character of Solid Snake was heavily inspired by Snake Plissken from John Carpenter's Escape from New York in an article written by Hideo Kojima he states I was especially electrified by the hero Snake Plissken being in the midst of my rebellious period the antihero snake resonated harmoniously he was a dark hero that separated himself from the orthodox hero who was either part of some organization enslaved by the system or was just as personified the name snake in MGS comes from creeping up on someone silently like a snake the adjective solid expressed a snake strong and blade sharp image paradoxical when combined with snake's lightness normally snake and solid do not get along it's like talking about hot ice I came up with this name to express this lack of balance in equilibrium but when I decided that the code name would be snake the character itself was more Plissken and snake-like at the subconscious level if I use a different name for snake in MGS he probably would have been a totally different character while the name was inspired by Plissken the design of Solid Snake was heavily inspired by Kyle Reese in the original Terminator to achieve snakes goals in the game the player is best off avoiding visual contact with the patrolling guards if the player is found an alert mode will start and will force the player to run and hide in order to leave the mode game his snake start off with nothing but his bare fists as time goes on snake will gain access to a variety of firearms and explosives if snake is able to rescue POWs along the way he will rank up his class to upgrade his health and ammo capacity you know if POWs killed however snake will lose a class level as punishment the military base of outer heaven is a labyrinth of different buildings with multiple floors the player must find various key cards and other items to unlock new paths to progress through the game to assist with his task snake can speak with foxhounds commanding officer big boss with his radio transceiver the system gave agency to the player to continue the narrative in ways that most games don't instead of completing a level to get maybe a tidbit more story if at all the players conversations with other characters can provide hints as well as flavor text to help immerse them in the world nearing the end of the game communications with Big Boss start to take a turn for the worse Solid Snake was provided with false information meant to hinder his progress eventually he was told to abort the mission and turn off the game system completely obliterating the fourth wall after destroying the TX 55 model Metal Gear snake comes face to face with the leader of outer heaven in a twist of events it turns out that the leader was none other than Big Boss who commanded snake to go on his mission in the first place Big Boss was playing both sides and he did not expect snake to perform as well as he did after ruthless battle snake defeated Big Boss and escaped an exploding outer heaven middle gear was released in Japan on July 13th 1987 as the MSX wasn't released in the United States development began to port the game to the very popular Nintendo Entertainment System this version of the game is quite different than its predecessor as the MSX version proved to be more visually appealing and the NES version was riddled with many infamous translation errors like I feel asleep the biggest change however is that Solid Snake never actually encounters a Metal Gear in the NES version instead his battle is with a supercomputer the NES version of Metal Gear ended up selling over a million copies in the West which prompted Konami to develop a direct sequel to the game with western audiences in mind unfortunately this was done without the involvement nor consent of Hideo Kojima losing the Metal Gear names snake's revenge is a non canonical NES game released only to North American and European markets in April of 1990 despite it being developed in Japan in Kojima sighs at the time Metal Gear was a standalone story he wasn't even planning on making a sequel to Metal Gear nor was he aware the Konami was already in the process of making a sequel on a train ride in Tokyo Kojima ran into a developer of snake's revenge who not only told him about the game but requested him to work on a true sequel by the end of the train ride could you have a sixth or E line for the game the next day he presented a game plan to his superiors at Konami they then gave him the green light to make Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake the game took place in 1999 as the world was facing an energy crisis to combat this oil expose invented by a man named dr. Keough Marv unfortunately the doctor was kidnapped by agents of Zanzibar land Solid Snake is brought out of retirement by foxhounds new commander Roy Campbell to rescue dr. Marvin the nation of Zanzibar land snake also has support from other Foxhound members like McDonald Miller over his radio transceiver gameplay improved a great deal since the original game Solid Snake can out crawl for the first time which added to the complexity of the stealth system Kojima had made a point of expanding the search function of the patrolling soldiers to add to the tension if the player is caught the soldiers are no longer confined to a single screen as the game progresses snake encounters grey fox from the original Metal Gear but this former ally is now working for the enemy another twist reveals that Big Boss did not die in outer heaven and he is now the leader of Zanzibar land Big Boss had also been harboring children that he's supposedly saved from various wars so that they could fight for him in the future this theme of child soldiers would continue in future Metal Gear titles at the end of the game snake defeats both gray fox and Big Boss along with a new Metal Gear D and once again makes his escape Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake was released exclusively in Japan for the msx2 in 1990 and received near universal acclaim from its reviewers Kojima ended up taking a break from the series with his game policenauts eventually he returned to start development on Metal Gear 3 for the 3do system in 1994 due to the declining support for the 3do at the time development of the game was shifted to the PlayStation after police knots was released the game was eventually renamed Metal Gear Solid solid and Metal Gear Solid has three meanings first of all Solid Snake is a exercise Yoji Shinkawa was in charge of the concept art both Yoji Shinkawa and mode asada mori would end up working on every numbered Metal Gear Solid game to come to further assist Kojima a co-writer was brought in for the game tomokazu Fukushima male Gear Solid would strive to feel more cinematic than ever before the game starts off with an opening credits sequence that felt just like a movie [Music] like its predecessor Colonel Roy Campbell brings Solid Snake at a retirement once again this time members of Foxhound have gone rogue and revolted against the United States government on a secret nuclear weapons facility on Shadow Moses Island in Alaska the terrorists are now demanding big bosses remains and 1 billion dollars or they threatened to launch a nuke using the new Metal Gear Rex Solid Snake must face Foxhound members sniper wolf Vulcan Raven psycho mantis revolver ocelot and their leader liquid snake - once again stop in nuclear threat over the course of the game the players reunited with a now cybernetic gray fox and McDonald Master Miller two new allies are also introduced Otakon and Meryl who had both become important reoccurring characters in the series with the power of the PlayStation and cd-rom technology Metal Gear Solid is the first Metal Gear game to have voice acting in the West David Hayter was given the role of Solid Snake Metal Gear can't be cam Clark for liquid snake see you later brother Patrick Zimmerman for revolver ocelot and Christopher Randolph Otacon just the name of you what's with these guys it's like one of my Japanese enemies he person in the original release the game once again uses the radio system this time called the codec to keep the story going and to give hints when the player is a need for example when the player fights Psycho Mantis he will not be able to defeat him via normal means the player can contact their allies to see if they have advice for defeating the enemy be a blank slate okay clear your mind the in contact with by identifying a person's DNA near the end of the game it is revealed that solid snake and liquid snake are both clones of big boss after the disruption of Metal Gear Rex and the climactic final battle between brothers liquid snake succumbs to Fox die [Music] and Solid Snake escapes with Meryl Aaronic on at the end of the credits we see the start of a new Metal Gear tradition the post-credits stinger Kojima has a main theme for every Metal Gear Solid game he produces and the theme for mgs one is Jean and the idea of nature vs. nurture the game sends a message about how you mustn't allow yourself to be ruled by your genes liquid snake thought he was the inferior clone compared to Solid Snake because he obtained all of big bosses recessive genes and his obsession to overcome his genealogy who went to his downfall it turns out that Solid Snake was the one with recessive genes and he still came out on top in the end Metal Gear Solid came out on September 3rd 1998 in Japan for the PlayStation and was met with both critical and financial success to this day the game is still recognized in numerous greatest video game ever lists an enhanced version of the game called Metal Gear Solid integral was released one year later in Japan this version added a disc full of gameplay challenges called a VR missions this disc was released as Metal Gear Solid VR missions compared to shooting them in the head fans of the series have mixed opinions about riding in the game amazing how you walk around like that [Music] snake been waiting long some did not like his personality in comparison to snake but plenty of fans liked how his narrative added to the seam of the game throughout the course of Metal Gear Solid 2 the players left wondering what exactly is real with him the story of the game Ryden keeps mentioning his virtual reality training completed 300 missions in VR I feel like some kind of legendary mercenary he is told that the world is being controlled by an Illuminati like group called the Patriots your office the White House merely puppets pawns in a game the entire reason he is on big shell is because he is participating in a Solid Snake simulation who orchestrated the creation of Shadow Moses what and he discovers his commander through all of this madness is actually an artificial intelligence one that eventually goes haywire I hear it's amazing when the famous purple stuff were in flat jaws faced with the tuning fork does a raw Blake on Harry Caray rock I need scissors 61 throughout the game you meet Solid Snake the ex-president of the United States who is also a perfect clone of Big Boss solidus snake ends up being a more grey villain in the series his end goal is to free the world from the Patriots which could be viewed as noble however his means to that goal and his past raising child soldiers like ridin are immoral Metal Gear Solid 2 ends with the death of Solid Snake and it furthers the mystery of the Patriots what the hell like gene in mgs one the steam - mgs - is meme but not necessarily in the funny sense we think of today a meme is an idea behavior style or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture the Patriots goal in mgs 2 is to control the flow of digital information by censoring what they believe to be trivial or biased Solid Snake's goal is very different life isn't role over to someone else in 2004 a remake of mgs 1 was released on the Nintendo GameCube titled Metal Gear Solid the Twin Snakes this game was developed by Silicon Knights who were most known for their work on the game eternal darkness sanity's Requiem the remake ran on the mgs2 engine and incorporated a few features from MVS - like first-person aiming though at the time it was well-received a lot of fans of the series prefer the original game to the remake due to some design liberties taken with the game [Music] Kojima ended up changing his mind on working on another Metal Gear project after some time had passed Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater was originally going to be developed for the PlayStation 3 but due to the far longer than expected wait for the consoles launch it was pushed to run on the PlayStation 2 hardware Kojima was set to drastically change the setting from the previous games in the series he stated since mgs3 is the second mgs for the ps2 we had to do something drastic to surprise everyone we also knew that the jungle is what we the developers of mgs fans and people of the industry wanted you do not play a solid snake or ridin instead you play as a character named Naked Snake who had later been known to the series as the antagonist big boss mgs3 takes place at the height of the Cold War Naked Snake is a CIA agent under the newly formed Fox unit commanded by Maj Zero he infiltrates the Russian jungle of Celino yars to save a scientist named Nikolai Sokolov who developed a nuclear-armed tank called the shadow HOD against his will unfortunately snake is unable to save Sokolov while on this mission because he is betrayed by his former mentor the boss who defected to work with the Russian crew snake must defeat both this new nuclear weapon and his old mentor in order to prevent nuclear war survival elements were heavily incorporated into the gameplay of mgs3 the player must hunt and eat animals in order to fill their stamina meter if the player is injured they must perform first aid on themselves using supplies scattered throughout the area additionally the player can blend into their environment using a variety of different camouflage options the higher the camo index the less likely a guard will find you naked snake fights members of the bosses Cobra unit throughout the game and most fights give the player many different ways to defeat their enemy for instance when fighting a boss named the end if the player didn't want to play through a sniper were through multiple well-designed open and by race they can choose to snipe him early in the story if they are quick on the trigger the player can also set their contact lock a week ahead to have the boss literally die of old age waiting for his fight mgs3 is full of small decisions such as these if the player destroys a helicopter that is parked on an enemy base the helicopter will be replaced with soldiers on a flying platform much later in the game if you blow up the soldiers supply of food they will become hungry in later areas and will eat anything they find if you feed them something poisonous well then you get the picture mgs 3 marks the first game in the series where the player can finish the game without getting an alert to help with that challenge CQC or close quarters combat was introduced in this game when either unarmed or using a one-handed weapon the player can place a garden to chokehold after which they can decide to either interrogate the guard choke them unconscious or slit their throat if the player is looking for a quicker approach they can slam an or eternal for example the boss at the end of the game poses the irony that in the 21st century America and Russia may no longer be enemies but she still must give her life due to her seen Cold War America Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater was released on November 17th 2004 in North America and did very well both critically and financially there was some criticism of the game due to its camera on game added a normal third-person interactive camera and also the first incarnation of Metal Gear Online shortly after the release of mgs3 came a very unique spin-off for the newly released PSP system called Metal Gear acid this game is a card-based tactical RPG Metal Gear acid did well enough to warrant its own sequel which released about a year later while these games are not canonical to the rest of the series there are fun change to the formula and a good play while you're on the go in 2006 yet another Metal Gear game was released on the PSP this one retained the self action gameplay the series is known for even though the game was not directed by Hideo Kojima Metal Gear Solid portable ops is a very important stepping stone in the series it takes place after the events of Metal Gear Solid 3 once again you play as Big Boss though he still goes by his codename snake throughout the game Big Boss builds himself an army by kidnapping enemy soldiers and convincing them to join his side afterwards you can build yourself a squad of soldiers to bring to the mission a big difference in portable ops is the fact that the game is divided into smaller ops as opposed to one long narrative these portable entries helped fill the void but fans wanted another console outing for the series that answered all the questions mgs 2 gave them when Middle Gear Solid 4 was announced Kojima wasn't originally attached to direct the game instead shu yo Mirada took the project over after a substantial negative fan reaction which included death threats Kojima ended up changing his mind Kojima told CVG about said death threats the staff heard about this and got very nervous we talked today as if it was a joke but at the time it was not a joke at all it was serious in another interview he stated once again I'd intended for mgs3 to wrap up the series but so many people wanted to know what happened after two things like the identity of the Patriots and so forth I had planned on leaving those mysteries as mysteries but people weren't convinced that the series was wrapped up so ultimately we ended up making 4 when work started on it though I began to wonder if my message of what we should pass on to future generations had truly gotten through both to players and my team after all I have been conscious of the fact that this is really going to be my final Metal Gear which means the team is going to have to continue the series themselves after I step away Kojima and Morada ended up Co directing the projects together tomokazu Fukushima the co-writer of mgs 1 through 3 was not attached to work on mgs4 or any follow-up game for that matter leading up to the game humorist trailers were created using the assets from mgs3 the announcement trailer had snake as an analogue for Kojima fighting his way to the director seat it is notable that the director seat originally had Alan Smithee credited Alan Smithee is the official pseudonym used by film directors who want to disown a project mgs4 follows a dying Solid Snake who is experiencing accelerated aging due to being a clone the Patriots and their war economy have plunged the world into a never-ending battle over the years since mgs - liquid Ocelot has amassed multiple private military companies or PMC's that when brought together rival the size of the United States Army presumably his plan is to take control of the Patriots which inevitably would take over the world Solid Snake's final mission is to assassinate liquid Ocelot before he completes his insurrection in contrast to previous entries in the series the game is separated into five distinct acts each with their own setting Solid Snake travels to the Middle East South America Eastern Europe Shadow Moses Island and to liquid ocelots capital ship on outer Haven each act has its own variations on the gameplay for example in the Middle East snake enters a war zone with multiple groups fighting snake has the choice to either partner with the local militia or take everyone on in Eastern Europe snake must lose his way through a city to find an important secret base back on shadow moses snake doesn't find any soldiers on the desolate base but rather machines he must sneak around mgs for added over-the-shoulder aiming for the first time in the series the game also added octocamo which allowed snake to blend into his environment without manually changing his camouflage in a menu a psych gauge was introduced to replace the stamina system from mgs3 the sight gauge functions as an assessment of snakes psychological state if snakes adrenaline increases in a combat situation he can fire off rounds faster and receive less damage however if snake is stressed out or here's something undermining in a cutscene wake up and face reality snake then the meter will lower making snakes accuracy and movement speed decrease accordingly until it can be replenished solid snake meets up with important characters from the previous games along the way such as Merrill from mgs1 riding from mgs2 and major 0 from mgs3 at the end of the games snake and his team are able to completely eradicate the Patriots [Music] liquid Ocelot and snake have a final battle which incorporates elements from every previous Metal Gear Solid game afterwards Ocelot is defeated in a very dramatic fashion unfortunately snake believes that he will need to die as well due to the mutating Fox died and his body snake is told that if he lives much longer he would become patient zero for a viral epidemic snake returns to the graveyard the boss is buried in puts a gun in his mouth and the screen cuts to black in the middle of the credits we are presented with the revelation that big boss who has been dead since the 2d games in the timeline is actually still alive and woke from his coma as soon as the Patriots were shut down it is shown solid snake couldn't pull the trigger on himself big boss and solid snake have a heart-to-heart with each other all the while explaining the history of the Patriots in the end though big boss officially succumbs to Fox died and passes away on his old mentors grave if this seems like a lot that's because it really is mgs4 has about eight hours of cutscenes in the game and that final cutscene alone is over an hour long Metal Gear Solid 4 guns of the Patriots was released internationally on June 12th 2008 on the PlayStation 3 once again it did very well financially and critically a year later two new Metal Gear games were announced at e3 the first game was called Metal Gear Solid Rising this game would have been set between the events of MGS 2 and mgs for and have players control the cyborg enhanced Ryden the other game announced was Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker for the PSP this game would be set between the events of portable ops and the original metal year and have players control big boss once again peace walker would also be directed by hideo kojima he believed that both of these games would be Metal Gear Solid 5 he described Metal Gear Solid rising as the next-generation mgs and Peace Walker as the mgs 5 inside me Peace Walker was described in trailers as the missing link in the MGS series the story revolves around Big Boss and McDonnell Miller formerly known as master Miller now referred to as Kazuhiro Miller and their private military force called militares sounds frontier or MSF they are hired by an assailant from the KGB to repel the CIA force that has invaded Costa Rica as a result of this Agreement MSF will receive their very own mother base located at an offshore plant in the Caribbean Sea this deal would essentially make Big Boss an enemy to the United States the gameplay in peace Walker is similar to that of portable ops big boss can build up MSF by capturing soldiers on the field they improve the capture of soldiers with the introduction of the Fulton recovery system instead of carrying soldiers back to a truck located on the map players can simply attach a balloon to the soldier to send him flying back to mother base players can then decide what duties that soldier will have on base for example if you place them in the R&D team you might about six months earlier at middle years 25th anniversary event the day Okajima announced his new project called Metal Gear Solid Ground zeroes this game was planned to be a direct sequel to peace Walker with new open-world mechanics for the first time David Hayter would not be reprising his role as snake instead the job was given to Kiefer Sutherland which yielded mixed reactions from fans while ground zeroes was in development a mysterious trailer was shown during the 2012 Spike TV Game Awards for a game simply titled the phantom pain developed by moby-dick studios fans began to notice numerous clues that this might be another Metal Gear game in disguise when asked about this Kojima denied any involvement but he did comment that he noticed the resemblance to ground zeroes in March of 2013 journalist Jeff Keeley tweeted that he was headed off to interview Joaquim Ogrin the supposed creator of the phantom pain and claimed that it would be interesting during the interview Moe grimoire bandages on his face claiming he had an accident Moe grin showed screenshots and concept art for the game in which the Fox engine logo could clearly be seen the Fox engine was an in-house built engine powering ground zeroes when questioned about this Moger and expressed shock and the interview ended abruptly later that month a new trailer finally dropped and confirmed the game to be named Metal Gear Solid 5 the phantom pain Kojima also revealed it will be his last Metal Gear game before retiring from active involvement once again but knowing his track record he'll probably be back for Metal Gear Solid 6 it's not like anything else could happen the prologue Metal Gear Solid 5 Ground zeroes was released on March 18th 2014 the game follows Big Boss as he travels to Camp Omega and rescues Chico and Paz from peace Walker after they were kidnapped by the mysterious skull face and his xof force after the rescue we witnessed the destruction of MSF and their mother base the game ends with the cliffhanger of paws exploding from a hidden bomb inside her body that caused the crash of the helicopter Big Boss was on while there was plenty of side content in ground zeroes some journalists and fans criticized how short the main story of the game was gajima stated afterwards that the phantom pain would be 200 times as big as ground zeroes all signs were pointing to the fact that phantom pain would be incredibly immense while development continued on the phantom pain a playable teaser or PT for silent Hills was released a game led by Kojima and Guillermo del Toro fans of Kojima were ecstatic about everything to come from him as more and more time went on there seemed to be a falling out between Hideo Kojima and Konami about six months before the release of the phantom pain the branding Kojima Productions and a Hideo Kojima game were taken off of promotional materials and the official websites for ground zeroes the phantom pain and the middle year solid legacy collection when people started taking note of this Konami maintained that the company and Kojima would continue development and support Metal Gear products later that same day GameSpot reported after power struggles Konami had restricted access to corporate Internet emails and phone calls for people at Kojima Productions the report added that Kojima and other senior staff now essentially work as contractors not permanent employees Kojima Productions management in all likelihood disband once development on the phantom pain was complete about a month later konami took PT the teaser for silent hill's off of the playstation store the next weekend guillermo del toro stated that the game was not gonna happen which later konami confirmed at the time konami had given Kojima Productions a very generic and boring new name number 8 production department all the while had a Okajima was unable to comment on the event stood in an agreement he had with the company even with the split between Kojima and Konami Metal Gear Solid 5 the phantom pain did release internationally on September 1st 2015 the game picks up about 9 years later when the venom snake big boss's new codename wakes up from his coma in the hospital after almost being assassinated in that hospital he is rescued by a man named Ishmael who mysteriously disappears after a car crash venom snake reunites with Ocelot who along with McDonald Miller formerly known as Benedict Miller formerly known as master Miller formerly known for a brief period as liquid snake formerly known as Kazuhiro Miller now referred to as cos introduced him to their new private force called Diamond Dogs venom snake cause and Ocelot vow revenge on the people who were components of the destruction of MSF skull face and cypher which is another name for major zero and the Patriots throughout the course of the game you follow a similar path to peace Walker as you recruit enemy soldiers into Diamond Dogs and sort them into various teams you have a plethora of options to rub around the best open-world of Afghanistan and Central Africa a buddy system was introduced to give support in the field for example you could choose dehors as your buddy to roam the train faster while still showcasing an element of stealth you could also have D dog as your buddy to mark enemy soldiers on your screen so you are less likely to be caught by surprise the fulton system has also been expanded to let players pick up various animals vehicles and tanks while the gameplay is vast and varied there are some cracks that lead many to believe that this game was rushed to retail because of the Konami and Kojima split once you finish off skull face and the middle gears threat of the game you enter chapter 2 in this chapter you find yourself replaying missions from the previous chapter most of the time with a few new ones in between by the end of the story there are plenty of gaps that never get filled in for instance venom snake meets Eli who later becomes the liquid snake Eli with the help of a child's Psycho Mantis end up stealing in metal gear from the Diamond Dogs but we never find out what happens to them afterwards a whole new area and final mission was planned for a confrontation between the venom snake and Eli but was ultimately scrapped the final mission with the big twist of the game makes you replay the first mission in the hospital all over again with no changes at the end we find out that ishmael was actually the real big boss and the whole time you were playing a soldier who underwent plastic surgery to look like him it is revealed the big boss Solid Snake kills in the original Metal Gear is actually venom snake the big boss Solid Snake's supposedly kills in Metal Gear 2 is the real one Metal Gear Solid 5 the phantom pain did very well for many fans of the series we feel there is still something that we never got to see because of a feud between Konami and Kojima we truly feel the phantom pain [Music] [Music] Konami is first metal your game since Kojima has left the company is coming out soon Metal Gear survive is to be a survival game set in an alternate timeline using the Fox engine from Metal Gear Solid 5 Kojima has finally got his wish and has left the Metal Gear series behind he is currently hard at work with his new studio on his next game death stranding if you thought Metal Gear was weird just wait until you see what this game is it may be time for fans to let go of the series as we know it letting go can be hard but we can always take what we have seen and what we've learned
