ah the Nintendo 64 it's an amazing console that was supported with releases and add-ons from its release in 1996 to 2002 amazing games such as Super Mario 64 Banjo Kazooie golden i7 Perfect Dark The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask Star Fox 64 Mario Kart 64 but do you remember hearing about some sort of elusive game called Kitty cart 64 welcome to Kitty cart [Music] 64 3 2 1 fun the lights green and it's time to race aim for the checked flag and don't slow down get the adrenaline pumping only one two three laps and you win easy to pick up yet impossible to put down do you have what it takes to get to first place get ready for the cart racing game of your dreams does that ring any bells the game was created by a small team called scrun Soft interactive made up of the game designer and Project Lead Andrew Brandenburg the development lead simply blg Dev the game developer paperjack among a handful of other people the game was clearly inspired by the likes of Mario Kart 64 predominantly seen by the use of 2D Sprites and you may look at the game and its back of the box description and think of it as a cute arcade racer with some story elements to it but underneath that surface level cutesy Persona is something else entirely welcome to gy card 64 firstly let's take a look at the game's menus and what we're presented with the title screen we're presented with is ominous compared to the cheerful sounding announcer and music with the announc sounding like she could be Kitty herself what we're hearing and seeing in front of us is bright and cheerful with the titular character Kitty in her cart waving to us but that's not what we see in the background which is what I was touching on briefly when I pointed out the game's Persona moving into the main menu we see the Cy Persona in full force compared to the title screen but there's still some of that uneasiness seeped in thanks to the contrasting black lines that highlight the selected menu and bring attention away from the ones that aren't there are also o some unnerving sounds that rear their heads throughout the game's main menu theme dubbed cart menu starting from the bottom we have quit which does exactly what it says but it's odd for a Nintendo 64 game to have considering that you just turn off the console if you want to stop playing a game the settings menu is fairly simple as well giving us the options to change the sound effects volume the music volume and to make the game full screen the full screen option is pretty strange as well for a Nintendo 64 game but it must be a developer debug thing accidentally left in the game the multiplayer menu doesn't seem to work either despite having two controllers plugged in for split screen what's more perplexing is the way that the controller we see is laid out there's just too many buttons there are buttons on the left side where the d-pad is that shouldn't be there no start button either the A and B buttons are differently shaped and there are five C buttons instead of four what this m or Mimi thing isn't exactly established either my best guess would be a memory slot that can be selected maybe a total of five of them as indicated here but now all we have to do is look at the meat of the game the single player mode 3 2 1 [Music] Go the game throws us right into the first of seven unique tracks without any sort of game mode selection screen character sele ction screen cors or cop selection screen there was none of it we're just here in this simple and colorful block Town racetrack the song used in the racetrack is called carpet cards so we can assume that the name has something to do with the track and I mean it does look a lot like one of those rug cities where you can drive toy cars on you know the ones and then we have toy blocks that represent buildings and have words on them and Cones to Signal what the race course is it's nice cheery and creative the game's controls are simple too we can accelerate break reverse Honker horn look behind hop which you would think would allow you to drift and get a boost from it but it doesn't do anything other than just hop and we can hide the HUD it's simple it takes a lot of inspiration from the previously mentioned Mario 64 and it works from the get-go we can see that the checkered race flag has been torn off one of its poles we're missing the promised unique cast of cute characters which means that we can't make new friends or rivals on the Raceway and everything just feels so empty despite there being some sort of town here I guess it's because no one's around and there's nothing going on not even the music or sound effects help beat that empty feeling it's just you and your cart everything here and the lack of what you also think should be here creates a race course that's as wide as an ocean but as deep as a puddle the racetrack being a simple figure eight with a bridge adds to that too looking to the HUD we can see a map a time tracker which we can assume would reset after a lap is completed and we have a lap counter so let's make our way into lap two and uh the timer is still going and the lap counter hasn't changed repeatedly doing laps doesn't work either so there's something that's clearly wrong if you have a Keen Eye you may have noticed that I driven past a sort of smoke signal I did mention that cones are laid around to keep us on the race course itself but you know curiosity killed the cat it wasn't a smoke signal but a red cart smoking from its engine and missing his driver you can drive around the rest of the map outside of the race course and you won't find the driver all while the music gets quieter and quieter until there's complete silence minus your car's engine and honking of course there have been road signs and Cones LED throughout the level signifying to us the player to avoid going here since it's not part of the RAC trck well we you can see signs warning us about the dead end and to turn around at the end of the map but there's nowhere else to go nothing else to see so there's only one thing really left to [Music] do we've entered a new level but this time we don't spawn on the racetrack itself we're on the inside of the track which we can see is some sort of oval circuit inside a rundown Warehouse with mud leaking from the ceiling into the middle of the place and that's where we find ourselves sinking in the middle sinking we got to stay afloat here and to do that we have to drive onto the floating debris found in the mud which also sinks when you drive onto it well that's no good and I think the music in this level reflects that perfectly mud carts mud it's a constant Loop that sounds like it's slowly but surely sinking with you too further and further into the mud despite how hard you try not to and in the end Kitty sinks being mocked by the borders that bind her to her [Music] fade now we find ourselves in a desert racecourse with small palm trees a lake pyramids LED throughout the place and a blacked out checkered line Dune carts is the name of the music that accompanies us here the music repeats over and over again almost like it's restarting constantly it's not but it sounds like there should be more to the song More variation within it you could describe the level itself like that too it's visually interesting with landmarks and nice on the eyes visuals but not much happens throughout the race other than being able to drive through a single pyramid [Music] the visuals and the audio continuously glitch out but it doesn't look like there's a way out of here despite the checkered flags being up to the lap counter doesn't change either when pass through to hit the second lap so uh what now we don't get our usual loading screen and we're in this hellscape of a test room the music in this level is called sards what could sa mean psycho psyche the insanity and mazike structure of the place could fit both of those and the noise oh my God this place is so loud and chaotic it makes the player want to get out of the labyrinth faster causing a crazy and uncoordinated drive through the place as blocks fall in front of you funneling you down a certain path almost like that's intentional creating this sort of coordination but not by your own doing by the level itself and what do we make of these glitching out bodies hitting them or trying to interact with them does nothing and they only seem to seize and glitch about out on the floor they make these nightmarish body glitch noises that are earpiercing and shake me to my core it sounds like everything here is in some sort of pain but once you find an exit there's only one place to go [Music] [Music] the loading logo is back but we're in some sort of void with balloons and signage that looks like it should say congratulations even the level's music matches a similar signage and looks like it should say congratulations you'll notice that we have a different objective here and the racetracks if you could even call it that map is not found map 006 wait map 006 but this would be the fourth level and the fifth level if we're counting the previous test level what's that about now the objective here is to pop the balloons found throughout this level and popping one creates a pop and a nice celebration sound but you may notice that some balloons gush out blood accompanied by screams they're moving and look like they're filled with blood and guts compared to the other balloons somehow the screams blend in with the cheerful and celebratory music found within the level creating a sort of uneasiness that plays into how the level is structured where you can barely see in front of you and any out of the ordinary sound could make you an and quicker with popping the balloons and that's what you'll hear in the form of heavy breathing as you get closer and closer to finishing the objective you'll also notice that the music gets quieter and quieter too compared to starting the level amplifying the creepiness and uneasy feeling this level creates [Music] we're popped and we're sent to a highway or what seems to be an endless Highway sonorous carts is the music that accompanies this level and it's a fitting name sonorous is a word that refers to a voice or sound that's deep imposing or full and it can also be a ringing sound and that's what we hear a deep synth and contrast higher pitch tones that perfectly encapsulates this highway level and like I said it looks like and feels like an endless Highway it stretches out for eons towards a silhouetted City no matter what direction you go in and all you can do is drive and listen to the sonorous sounds you can find some fish swimming throughout the level in the air and they can be seen glitching on the ground there's some Road cones and barriers too and this place has no map that could indicate to us that this isn't a racetrack but some sort of other level that could have been normally accessed or maybe it's not meant to be here at all but the endlessness of the highway can be broken up by taking a turn down to another level there are three levels to this highway and the bottom one is filled with water that can still be driven through you'll also notice warning signs next to ramps on the edges of the highway so you know what that means [Music] [Music] we're dropped into a parking lot with an ominous void for a sky and lamp post for light and just like the other levels it seems endless too the music found within it is called parking and that describes it perfectly nothing is friendly here not the environment visuals or the music none of it driving forward we come across a red arrow pointing us towards a building and on closer inspection it's a an underground car park yeah following a blood red arrow into an underground car park yeah that seems safe to go down so what else is there to do the song dubbed parking played in the empty parking lot but silence greets us here and we can't go back so all that's left to do is follow even more blood red arrows down and down the car park until [Music] [Music] oh [Applause] congratulations you did it Kitty's tires are slashed by spike strips she's brutally beaten her teeth are knocked out and she's left there to drown in her own blood and then the game shuts off what the hell just happened whoever did this looks a lot like the glitching our bodies we saw in the test level but we see that it can obviously move has a face and most likely set up this trap the song that plays during the final segment is called teeth which just like every other song in this game is very fitting and when did we end up anyway it's just a road in a void underneath a car park and who is this guy what's he doing down here what the hell is going on with this game with everything that I've shown you it doesn't make sense it just looks like I drove around a bunch of empty racetracks just to be murdered but there's a little more to each level if you look closely and really examine every nook and cranny and this will give us a better understanding of what we just witnessed for the sake of consistency I'm going to name each level we've seen with a name I think is appropriate in order we have carpet mud Dune test room congratulations Highway and parking lot in carpet you will have seen the empty and broken down cart crashed against a sign and tire next to a stack of blocks driving up those blocks we can find our first piece of the puzzle a first of many pieces of paper on this piece of paper is a crying sheeplike figure who will call sheep for Simplicity and they're drawn standing over a bottomless pit there's a red cart next to them and the cliff Edge is green hm a red cart a green Cliff a seemingly bottomless void underneath it we've seen all of those and we jump into the void to get to the next level mud but before we dive back in there there's one more piece of paper we can find it contains a drawing of the timer we have in the top right of the HUD but the timer has hit 99 minutes 99 seconds and 99 hundredths of a second and there are so many other nines underneath it written in Black compared to the pink nines next to the clock these Slender the Eight Pages style papers tell us something very important we know that when a lap is completed nothing happens and it seems like sheep figured that out too eventually hitting 99 99.99 on their lap counter whether or not this happened before or after their car broke down is up to interpretation but it made them extremely upset and they were left with no other choice than to jump as a desperate attempt to escape or end it all that brings us to Mud driving forward and then to the right of where we land brings us to another note this time we see sheep sinking into the mud as a big and pink creature with yellow horns stands over them on a platform the creature has a massive Red X crossed over it and a bunch of blue and pink scribbles could this monster have pushed sheep into the mud or not help them out well not too far from this note is a girl wearing a pink T-shirt pink bracelets and she has blonde hair this is the creature but it's not a creature it's just a little girl and I'll refer to her as that from now this is also the first character we've seen finally time to make new friends or rivals on the Raceway ew why are you still down there I hate getting mud on my shoes there's no way I'm letting you up here go away you'll get mud on me too what we've clearly made a rival here and we can see why sheep sank into the mud she didn't let sheep up because she didn't want to get mud on her and now she's doing the same to us that explains why she was drawn the way she was but would sheep really have that much hate for her to scribble over her like this or is somebody or something else responsible for these Pages it seems like a survival of the fittest situation as another cart can be found in the mud and we can assume that it's the little girls hence why she wouldn't want more mud on her once we drop into the Dune level we can drive up to the lake and find a bunny character which I'll refer to as bunny are deserts supposed to be hot I can't feel anything at all not even the wind it feels like bunny foreshadows the glitchiness that befalls this level and is bunny a friend or a rival I say a friend so hopefully nothing happens to our friend here when things glitch out now that's foreshadowing bunny says I can feel something now considering that they're laying on their side seizing and that their eyes are missing I don't think what they're feeling is something pleasant but bunny just sits there accepting the circumstances nothing can be done we can drive behind the pyramid we spawn in front of you know the one we can drive through and we can find our fourth page we can see a pyramid and the sky crudely drawn with jagged lines throughout obviously this all relates the level that we're in and the black Sky will signify the glitches that occur within the level the red in the sky is something we don't see happen but it could represent the death of the level with metaphorically bleeding as Jagged textures impale the level until it can't hold on to its life anymore and screams out its final breath test room I've looked everywhere in this level in every nook and cranny and there's nothing here for us to find no characters other than these glitching out humanoid beings and no pages but we can confirm that sheep somehow made their way here thanks to what we can find in the congratulations level a page showing sheep holding hands with an unknown smiling man walking through the test room level sheep finds their way there and someone was able to walk them through it who this man is is unknown but it could be one of the glitching out bodies the man who brutalizes us at the end or someone else completely whoever Drew this also added a small love heart above their heads indicating some sort of trust and level of friendship or relationship we can find a new character here too who will call Mouse who are you please help me I'm not supposed to be here what is she on about is she aware of what this place is what's happening could we ask her about it oh not ready to wake up what is she talking about she doesn't want to talk anymore I guess that makes things a bit hard to determine if she was a friend or a rival but all right uh so is there anything else around here that could give us hints to what she was talking about we can find a trophy for navigating or brute forcing through a maze of balloons and interact with it picks it up doing this does absolutely nothing but it's a trophy there's also one more page we can find that confirms what we already knew about some of the balloons found in this level that they're filled with blood and guts but this note implies that sheep was put into these balloons could that be what mouse was afraid of being stuffed into balloons was she led down here by this person or a different person but it still doesn't answer why she didn't want to wake up or what that even means her head exploded with conf Betty similar to what happens to Kitty after completing the balloon popping objective so is she waking up to the reality of her fate will we find the answers will this turn into a pyrocynical all-in the head type of video entering Highway we can find another NPC a glitched out and faceless cat that I'll call Cat I know creative you know he kind of reminds me of blanca the faceless cat from the Animal Crossing series even down to the white fur unlike in animal Crossing you can't make him a new face but you can find him multiple times throughout this level and whether that's because there's multiple cats or he just everywhere is Up For Debate he'll be doing various activities like fishing standing in the light menacingly and chilling and if it isn't obvious already we can't read what cat is saying everything in the text box is jumbled and makes no sense oh but we're saved thanks to RIT user Funk machine live posted about this and user yafim shiin decrypted all of the Cats dialogue shout outs to him and it reads as follows hey don't scare the fishes off it's not hard to catch a meal here you should try it sometime don't be scared I won't hurt you the waters here are soothing I'll have your fim's image Linked In the description if you want to check it out clearly cat is a certified friend and encourages us to fish which we can't do and he says the waters here are soothing this is interesting because we know where the waters eventually lead us to and that's the parking level where everything goes terribly wrong but before that there's a few pieces of paper we can find we have one where we can see cat sitting on a Ledge looking out towards the cityscape in the distance which we do get to see it seems like sheep sorum too as they can be found in the bottom right of the page there's a page with sheep drawn being surrounded by darkness and crying out what looks like tears or blood it could be but seeing as there are other colors in front of them that see seem to be part of the crying they could just be crying out colors in this drab and dank area the pink and cyan colors are what we see in the game's test room menus and Huds so there has to be a connection there right maybe this is just them walking through the test area crying and upset bleeding and then they meet the perceived friend that helps them out what about the final page this drawing of eyes wide open in a white void and eyes closed in a black void below it's a representation of sheep's Journey which seems to be similar to ours kitties everything is Peachy rainbows and sunshines at the top but then things get darker and maab as we go lower and lower down each level and that leaves us with only one more thing left to do and that's to enter the parking we make our way to the underground parking lot and there's an interactable on the right of it it's a bunch of teeth and blood is it sheep's someone else's regardless is something we're very familiar with so where does that that leave us are our questions and Mysteries answered uh well we have a small story we can put together thanks to the pieces of paper that follows sheep's story and in turn alludes to some of the stuff we'll see or go through in a general sense we can tell that sheep plunged from level to level met a stranger and then most likely was bludgeon to death and stuffed into balloons but when it comes to specifics sheep not being able to end the first race carpet and hitting the time limit has their cart crash and break down on top of that not knowing what to do they take the plunge off of the level to move past all of this somehow they make their way to the mud level and meet little girl who doesn't let them onto her platform away from the mud so they sink into the Dune level we find out that the level has absolutely shot itself and collapses in one massive pain scream Bunny's status after this is to be determined once it collapsed sheep found themselves sad and alone maybe even injured in their ride die but no biggie because they meet a friend or someone pretending to be one going into congratulations we find the balloons full of body parts one or some being sheep and who knows who else but before getting here sheep was taken away to be killed and we found their teeth at least that's what we could gather from everything we've seen right it's just a theory but do you see where I'm going with this and the connections I've made I think the general steps of sheep's story are pretty obvious but it's the finer details and steps that's a bit difficult to figure out and piece together we could also metaphorically be the Sheep seeing what's happened before and what will happen to us and what we'll see through these Pages if we go down the rabbit hole and find out and we can see what's coming with every playthrough and see the same warning signs over and over again our cart doesn't break down nor do we find this fellow in the test room but maybe it could have if there were other gameplay options from everything shown Kitty could have been stuffed into balloons too after all we do get a congratulations screen upon completing the game and there are congratulations screens found within the void of the congratulations level the congratulations are typed up terribly because this whole area and the context of the balloons are terrible too and what happens to the friends and Rivals we come across it's unknown but safe to assume they just stick to the levels they're bound to despite their interesting dialogue and interactions what else can they do other than sit and accept their Purgatory like face and kitty will always meet her fate at the hands of the nameless humanoid [Applause] being but is there a way to break the game play cycle to get another ending alternate routes or interactions you can try to hit 99 99999 on the timer and doing so does nothing it resets the lap timer to Z 0000 and that's where it'll sit with the varying success restarting the game will fix this and so to starting a new game trying to get a higher lap counter on any racetrack doesn't work either no matter how hard you try you can't get permanently out of the mod in the mod level there's no stopping the Dune level from collapsing unless of course you find a way to jump out of the map which you can like so but it doesn't change anything there's nothing to find in the test room level and no way to get to to the other parts of it beyond the jump we found everything there is to find in the congratulations level and nothing else to see on the highway level nothing else to see in the car park beyond the underground parking entrance and teeth inside which brings us to the ending reaching the previously mentioned 00000000 on the lap timer doesn't seem to change the outcome of things nor does this cone this damn cone it's the game's last warning to us to stop and I thought it could be our savior since it's an OB object we can push so naturally I pushed it all the way down the parking garage and into the path of Kitty's murderer but he just phases through it jumping to the side to avoid the creature doesn't work either as he seems to just beeline it to Kitty no matter what I mentioned earlier in the video that the [ __ ] strips were the reason for Kitty's cart not working anymore which led to her death well you could try jumping over the spike strips but sadly the tires still pop these are some crazy Spike spike strips that activate even though nothing's touching it the reason for this is because the spike strips hit box extends above it too so there's no avoiding death this is confirmed in a video by Fox play where we can see how big the hit boox is there's really just no avoiding it all you can really do is prolong hitting the spike strips until you can't take it anymore which is a form of never ending torture within itself this game has some cut content too mainly being a snowstorm level and a hell level cat play on YouTube has a video covering it all if you want to check it out for yourselves too but let's look at the cut Pages first Indie theorists on YouTube highlights these and as we can see we have sheep sad and trapped in a cage with color around them and a tire mark in the bottom right what this could be is a piece of the puzzle on what sheep went through but it's hard to pinpoint where it would fit in maybe after finding this mysterious man we also have a page with bunny on it glitching out which would have alluded to what happens to him in the dune level which is what I would be saying if I didn't find the page in the Dune level while getting some extra footage lucky me so maybe the page with sheep caged is somewhere to be found but I just can't find it maybe you'll be the one to find it who knows this could also imply that sheep came in contact with bunny looking at some other stuff we also have an unused NPC a trash can that's apparently called trash beina and she looks awesome regarding the levels the snow level looks to have an intense storm within it and you can run over presence which probably had an objective to it similar to the congratulations level the music accompanying this place is as mysterious as the level itself adding to the aimlessness and confusion of the place on the other hand the hell level looks Wicked and is full of hellish Reds and blocks pouring out lava from their mouths and eyes which look similar to the laughing face in the mud level the music here is constantly broken up by distortions and even without them it sounds distorted thanks to the Deep sounds within the music there's a laugh that can be heard throughout the song too that sounds a lot like the Final Fantasy laugh which I think's interesting it's not it but it sounds similar but it looks like the Laughing might be connected to the faces seeping out lava and the Laughing is only really heard when in proximity to them it's a wide proximity but it's still a proximity and the level is obviously full of lava as well that doesn't pour properly into the lava at the bottom of the which can be driven on giving Kitty a nice red glow and there are giant Stone pillars that kitty can drive up and down onto so you're probably wondering why these levels weren't used well this is where I have to admit something the game was not initially released on the Nintendo 64 it was a game made and submitted for 2023 is LSD Jam this is an event known as a game Jam where individuals or teams of people are given a certain amount of time to make a video game for fun and for prizes at least that's what it seems like the aim of this Jam was to make an exploration dreamlike game inspired by the 1998 game LSD dream emulator this is how things go for the most part with the yearly LSD jams and there are hundreds of interesting looking games to come out of it with one of those games being Kitty cart 64 so naturally the previously mentioned game designer and Project Lead Andrew Brandenburg who goes by snug V 11 on the itch.io page for the game made a post referring to the snowstorm level and that the level NPCs and more secrets will be added to the game which is confirmed to be just a demo but it doesn't look like the update ever came out but if it did feel free to correct me why I came to this conclusion is because snug booat 11 made another update post saying that the demo will no longer be supported because all efforts are going into the full game which is fantastic to hear if you'd like to download The Game's demo or keep up to date with how development is going I'll have the itch.io game page and Discord Linked In the description recently the game's been listed on Steam to wish list so go ahead and check that out too if you'd like and I'll also link the game soundtrack found on band camp in the description it seems to be a good way to help the developers by buying their digital album or specific tracks at whatever price you want I bought the album because I enjoy the game I want to see the game's full release and I wanted high quality versions of the games OST for the video so if you want to do the same go right ahead so what are we left with here an excellent and intriguing video game demo called Kitty cart 64 in this demo we played as Kitty and raced around by ourselves before we started to dive deeper and deeper into what's going on we did this by going from level to level and seeing new things and meeting new NPCs and in the end Kitty is beat down by an unknown person we've looked at the small amounts of story elements scattered here and there which allude to events that we may see and show us what happened to the NPC we've dobbed sheep all we can do is see the warning signs given to us but everything happens all the same over and over again as development of the game continues and we get closer to the full release I'm sure the devs will post about how development is going and other updates that are worth sharing and that
